The Method In The Madwoman : Functions Of Female Madness And Feminized Liminality In Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, And "The Yellow Wallpaper", Ivy Elizabeth Poitras
The Method In The Madwoman : Functions Of Female Madness And Feminized Liminality In Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, And "The Yellow Wallpaper", Ivy Elizabeth Poitras
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This critical thesis explores how three literary portrayals of “madness” in female characters of the mid-to-late 19th century written by women writers (Bertha Mason of Jane Eyre, Catherine Earnshaw of Wuthering Heights, and the Narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper”) operate as instruments within their work to provide commentary on the anxieties, fears, and ideological stereotypes of women and femininity of the era, as well as contradictions and concepts pertaining to confinement, the female body, gendered Gothic tropes, and societal oppression. The significance of this analysis lies in the consistency and endurance of these issues as they withstand modern development, making …
Navigating The Binary : Gender Presentation Of Non-Binary Individuals, Sharone Amalia Horowit-Hendler
Navigating The Binary : Gender Presentation Of Non-Binary Individuals, Sharone Amalia Horowit-Hendler
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Much of linguistic study of gender has focused on the binary: “men’s language” and “women’s language”. Similarly, most of society recognizes only two genders with the assumption that gender is connected to body and that everyone will map onto this binary. How then do non-binary individuals present themselves when they desire to be perceived outside of this dichotomy? This study re-examines the question of which masculine, feminine, and non-binary markers exist, and explores the ways that participants are aware of and utilize these signifiers in performing their gender identities.
The Effects Of A Self-Regulated Writing Intervention On English Learners' Academic Writing Skills, Diana Akhmedjanova
The Effects Of A Self-Regulated Writing Intervention On English Learners' Academic Writing Skills, Diana Akhmedjanova
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The goals of this dissertation were (1) to help English learners (ELs) improve their persuasive writing and self-regulated learning (SRL) skills and (2) to examine the effectiveness of the self-regulated writing intervention in an authentic setting. ELs are well-represented across university and college campuses in the U. S. While most of them thrive academically and receive their undergraduate and graduate degrees, a majority of ELs experience difficulties with academic writing. Therefore, there is a need to develop and examine evidence-based practices to promote the development of academic writing skills of ELs. One promising line of research involves adding instruction in …

Interactions Between Jefferson County Iroquoian Women And Men As Explored Through Social Network Analysis Of Pottery And Pipe Decorative Motif Traits, Jessica L. Vavrasek
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Pottery and pipe decorative motifs are generally thought to change across time, space, and group affiliation. While pipes and pottery have been extensively study using various methods, they have only recently been studied in present-day New York, southern Ontario, and Quebec (Northern Iroquoia) using social network analysis. Analyses to date have primarily focused on Pan-Iroquoian networks rather than on regions within Northern Iroquoia. To better understand the Jefferson County Iroquoians living in and around present-day Jefferson County, New York, social network analysis methods have begun to be utilized to analyze pottery and pipe decorative motifs to elucidate village interactions within …

Proceedings Of Pivot 2020: Designing A World Of Many Centers, Renata Marques LeitãO, Lesley-Ann Noel, Laura Murphy
DRS Conference Volumes
The virtual un-conference Pivot 2020 invited participants to consider how to design a ‘world of many centers and voices.’ In this forum, the aim was to pivot the discussion around decolonization from a critical perspective to a creative and generative one. The efforts to dismantle structures of oppression and hegemonic narratives have to be coupled with efforts to design otherwise and generate a different world. To refer to this world, the conference adopted the concept of the Pluriverse, proposed by Arturo Escobar (2018), which refers to a “world where many worlds fit”, in contrast to the “universal” single world generated …

Language Access And Due Process In Asylum Interviews, Pooja R. Dadhania
Language Access And Due Process In Asylum Interviews, Pooja R. Dadhania
Faculty Scholarship
The Department of Homeland Security does not provide interpreters to asylum applicants during their asylum interviews, instead requiring them to supply their own. This Article challenges this deprivation of language access as a procedural due process violation because it denies limited English proficient asylum seekers meaningful access to the statutorily created affirmative asylum process. The Department of Homeland Security's failure to provide interpreters can silence limited English proficient asylum seekers by depriving them of the opportunity to meaningfully present their claims. Asylum seekers, especially those who are low income or speak rare languages, face significant challenges in finding suitable interpreters. …

The Form Of The Content: The Digital Archive Nahuatl/Nawat In Central America, Laura Matthew, Michael Bannister
History Faculty Research and Publications
The digital archive “Nahuatl/Nawat in Central America” (NECA) assembles and makes publicly available a growing corpus of Nahuan-language documents produced in Spanish Central America. Many are fragments within larger Spanish-language documents and difficult to locate in the archive. NECA has succeeded in bringing attention to this understudied corpus but has so far failed to attract users to its transcription and translation tool. We consider the reasons for this creative failure based on user data, and suggest that the specialized skills and distinct academic communities needed to move this project forward require other workspaces, including the non-digital, in advance of online …

Symposium On Justin Remhof's Nietzsche's Constructivism: A Metaphysics Of Material Objects (Routledge, 2018), Justin Remhof
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Like Kant, the German Idealists, and many neo-Kantian philosophers before him, Nietzsche was persistently concerned with metaphysical questions about the nature of objects. His texts often address questions concerning the existence and non-existence of objects, the relation of objects to human minds, and how different views of objects impact commitments in many areas of philosophy―not just metaphysics, but also language, epistemology, science, logic and mathematics, and even ethics. In this book, Remhof presents a systematic and comprehensive analysis of Nietzsche’s material object metaphysics. He argues that Nietzsche embraces the controversial constructivist view that all concrete objects are socially constructed. Reading …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Cognitive Radio Sensor Network (CRSN) is known as a distributed network of wireless cognitive radio sensor nodes. Such system senses an event signal and ensures collaborative dynamic communication processes over the spectrum bands. Here, the concept of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) denes the method of reaching progressively to the unused range of spectrum band. As among the essential CRSN user types, the Primary User (PU) has the license to access the spectrum band. On the other hand, the Secondary User (SU) tries to access the unused spectrum eciently, by not disturbing the PU. Considering that issue, this study introduces a …

Automated Labeling Of Terms In Medical Reports In Serbian, Aldina Avdic, Ulfeta Marovac, Dragan Jankovic
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Nowadays, many electronic health reports (EHRs) are stored daily. They consist of the structured part and of an unstructured section written in natural language. Due to the limited time for medical examination, EHRs are short reports which often contain errors and abbreviations. Therefore it is a challenge to process an EHR and extract knowledge from this part of the text for different purposes. This paper compares the results of three proposed methods for automatic labeling of medical terms in unstructured parts of EHRs. All words are categorized as words within the medical domain (symptoms, diagnoses, therapies, anatomy, specialties etc.) and …
A Regular Expression Generator Based On Css Selectors For Efficient Extraction From Html Pages, Erdi̇nç Uzun
A Regular Expression Generator Based On Css Selectors For Efficient Extraction From Html Pages, Erdi̇nç Uzun
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Cascading style sheets (CSS) selectors are patterns used to select HTML elements. They are often preferred in web data extraction because they are easy to prepare and have short expressions. In order to be able to extract data from web pages by using these patterns, a document object model (DOM) tree is constructed by an HTML parser for a webpage. The construction process of this tree and the extraction process using this tree increase time and memory costs depending on the number of HTML elements and their hierarchies. For reducing these costs, regular expressions can be considered as a solution. …

Estimating Spatiotemporal Focus Of Documents Using Entropy With Pmi, Damla Yaşar, Selma Teki̇r
Estimating Spatiotemporal Focus Of Documents Using Entropy With Pmi, Damla Yaşar, Selma Teki̇r
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Many text documents are spatiotemporal in nature, i.e. contents of a document can be mapped to a specific time period or location. For example, a news article about the French Revolution can be mapped to year 1789 as time and France as place. Identifying this time period and location associated with the document can be useful for various downstream applications such as document reasoning or spatiotemporal information retrieval. In this paper, temporal entropy with pointwise mutual information (PMI) is proposed to estimate the temporal focus of a document. PMI is used to measure the association of words with time expressions. …
