An Efficient Information-Rich Representation Scheme For Information Access And Knowledge Acquisition., Asmaa El-Said, Hesham Arafat Jul 2020

An Efficient Information-Rich Representation Scheme For Information Access And Knowledge Acquisition., Asmaa El-Said, Hesham Arafat

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Tremendous growth in the number of textual documents has produced daily requirements for effective development to explore, analyze, and discover knowledge from these textual documents. Conventional text mining and managing systems mainly use the presence or absence of key words to discover and analyze useful information from textual documents. However, simple word counts and frequency distributions of term appearances do not capture the meaning behind the words, which results in limiting the ability to mine the texts. This paper proposes a novel representation scheme of a semantic understanding-based approach to mine textual documents. This approach is based on semantic notions …

The Teachers’ Assessment Knowledge And Practice: Contribution Of The Past-Time Experiences To The Present-Time Decision, Ummi Rasyidah, Novita Triana -, Ali Saukah

The Qualitative Report

It is interesting to scrutinize that many variables contribute to a teacher’s assessment knowledge and practice. The teacher’s knowledge is required to comprise not only those of the subject matter and general pedagogy but also that of students. What the teacher experienced as a student-teacher in higher education context likely transformed into her knowledge of teaching, intertwining with her insights of the current development in teaching and learning as well as technology. Using narrative inquiry as its method, the present study highlights a female Indonesian teacher’s assessment knowledge and practice within the context of higher education. The essentials of having …

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

This article analyzes the problem of filtering spam messages and addressing spam messages, Bayesian theorems based on artificial intelligence, LVQ algorithms (LVQ learning vector quantization) and a filtering scheme for systems based on neural networks. The direct construction of an effective neural network model of spam filtering using database recognition technology is considered. The parameters of access to the neural network how to include predefined statistical and non-statistical attributes of messages are given. The structure of neural network technology for classifying emails is also considered. The procedure for analyzing incoming data using the tool included in the analytical platform Deductor …

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado Jul 2020

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Since the first decades of the twentieth century, Peruvian poetic tradition has been characterized by experimental uses of language. Among these possibilities, some records tensioned this medium from the link with the plastic arts, as in the case of the poetry of José María Eguren, while others opted for the playing with the spatiality and visuality of the blank sheet, such as in the case of the work of Carlos Oquendo de Amat. However, it is not until the appearance of the poetry of César Vallejo, specifically with a poems like Trilce in 1922, that these breakages force us to …

The Aesthetics Of Multicoding Esolangs, Daniel J. Temkin Jul 2020

The Aesthetics Of Multicoding Esolangs, Daniel J. Temkin

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

In the influential 2005 paper "A Box, Darkly," Michael Mateas and Nick Montfort introduced the idea of multicoding: when one text holds multiple meanings, depending on context. Examples include polyglots, programs that can run successfully in two different languages, as well as sentences that can be read in French or English. Esoteric programming has a history of explicit multicoding languages. The best known are Piet, whose programs are images, and commands are the change in color from one pixel to the next; Shakespeare, with code written as plays, and Chef, whose programs are recipes that work in the kitchen. While …

Twine And The Challenge To Reading, Stuart Moulthrop Jul 2020

Twine And The Challenge To Reading, Stuart Moulthrop

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

The article considers the Twine story-game platform in relation to important critiques of earlier forms of electronic literature (specifically hypertext) from which it descends. Arguments for the significance of Twine are made based on aesthetic approaches (the fusion of literature and game culture) and the refinement of writing itself.

Electronic Writing As Hypermaterial Playground, Michael B. Heidt Jul 2020

Electronic Writing As Hypermaterial Playground, Michael B. Heidt

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

The text examines e-lit’s potentials for reframing the question of digital materiality through playful poetic practice. To this end, the discussion reconstructs the genealogy between concrete poetry and electronic writing:
Digital structures, such as source code, programmable logic devices, neural networks, databases, and sensor readouts, accompany us continuously, yet remain annoyingly hard to fathom. Although we ceaselessly interact with them, it is hard for humans to relate to these materials, to shape or see them. However, as long as we allow the material reality of these structures to slip through the cracks of the collective imaginary, it remains easy for …

From Ai With Love: Reading Big Data Poetry Through Gilbert Simondon’S Theory Of Transduction, Andrew Klobucar Jul 2020

From Ai With Love: Reading Big Data Poetry Through Gilbert Simondon’S Theory Of Transduction, Andrew Klobucar

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Computation initiated a far-reaching re-imagination of language, not just as an information tool, but as a social, bio-physical activity in general. Modern lexicology provides an important overview of the ongoing development of textual documentation and its applications in relation to language and linguistics. At the same time, the evolution of lexical tools from the first dictionaries and graphs to algorithmically generated scatter plots of live online interaction patterns has been surprisingly swift. Modern communication and information studies from Norbert Weiner to the present-day support direct parallels between coding and linguistic systems. However, most theories of computation as a model of …

Making Writing Harder: Computer-Mediated Authorship And The Problem Of Care, Kyle P. Booten Jul 2020

Making Writing Harder: Computer-Mediated Authorship And The Problem Of Care, Kyle P. Booten

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

From simple spell-check to sophisticated autocomplete, algorithms increasingly intervene in the process of writing. This paper considers three recent examples of writing interfaces produced by practitioners of electronic literature, each with a distinct model of what kind of feedback or interference writers need – in other words, with a conception of how to care for writers’ minds. One of the main logics that shapes contemporary digital media, including corporate writing-assistance tools, is that software should make some task easier. The three algorithmic co-writers examined here carry out a different logic. Instead of trying to make writing easier, they make writing …

Autopia And The Truelist: Language Combined In Two Computer-Generated Books, Nick Montfort Jul 2020

Autopia And The Truelist: Language Combined In Two Computer-Generated Books, Nick Montfort

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Autopia (Troll Thread, 2016) and The Truelist (Counterpath, 2017) are computer-generated literary books. I reported at ELO 2014 on two of my text-generating “novel machines” (Montfort 2014). The two projects discussed in this paper are about novel-size, but are different sorts of projects. Autopia’s text consists of headline-style sentences made entirely of the singular and plural names of cars. This project manifests not only as a print-on-demand book from a post-digital publisher, but also as a web project and a gallery installation. The Truelist’s 140 pages of verse are available in offset printed book form and also as a …

Translating A Work Of Digital Literature Into Several Languages: A Case Study, Serge Bouchardon, Nohelia Meza Jul 2020

Translating A Work Of Digital Literature Into Several Languages: A Case Study, Serge Bouchardon, Nohelia Meza

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

In 2010, the digital literature piece Déprise was published online (http://deprise.fr). Progressively, it has been translated from French into English (Loss of Grasp, 2010), Italian (Perdersi, 2011), Spanish (Perderse, 2013), and Portuguese (Perda de controlo, 2016). Every translation required changes to the original version in French but also to the other versions, leading to an intercultural and multilingual dialogue between the translators and the author.

What are the specificities of the translation of digital literature in comparison to the translation of literature in general? What does translation teach us …

Towards Conceptual History Of Management: The Language Of The 1950s Textbooks In Finland, Tuomo Peltonen Jul 2020

Towards Conceptual History Of Management: The Language Of The 1950s Textbooks In Finland, Tuomo Peltonen

European Management Studies

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to add to the emerging body of conceptual histories of management by undertaking a reading of three leading Finnish textbooks from the 1950s. Design: Management concepts are analysed through the linguistic dynamics of a set of historically situated Finnish textbooks. The semantic dimension of analysis is concerned with the conceptual structures behind particular linguistic constructions. The pragmatic dimension, on the other hand, is attuned to the speech act aspects of conceptual formations. Findings: The analysis shows that the current concept used for “management” in Finnish does not feature as the key word in …

Open Access Publishing In The European Union: The Example Of Scientific Works, Nikos Koutras Jul 2020

Open Access Publishing In The European Union: The Example Of Scientific Works, Nikos Koutras

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Access to information resources and publicly-funded research outcomes have been considered in Europe during the last decade. Open access practice became part of the European institutions’ agenda since 2006 within the final report of the European Research Advisory Board. The Lisbon Treaty (2007) explicitly confirmed the European Union’s commitment to free circulation of scientific knowledge (Article 179 TFEU) and the dissemination of research results (Article 183 TFEU). In this regard, the Horizon 2020 program illustrates the importance of open access policy towards further dissemination of scientific information. The European Commission also introduced in July 2012 a scientific information package to …

Grammatical Terminology: Vocalization And Signification, Mohammad Allabady Jul 2020

Grammatical Terminology: Vocalization And Signification, Mohammad Allabady

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

The grammatical terminology in the field of grammatical studies is the most

significant component of this study. One of its most important features is that

grammarians have expatiated in prescribing the rules of grammatical

terminology. Schools, and approaches to grammar varied in their ways of

tackling it, and which forms an important feature for the development of

grammatical studies. This feature has assumed a prominence in the field of

linguistics studies in general.

This paper sheds light on grammatical terminology from two perspectives:

its abundance on the one hand and its intermingling and variety in its meanings

on the other. …

The Arabic Language In The Computer Age, And In Formatics (An Approach To The General Structure Of Arabic Systems), Salih Abu Sini

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

This paper investigates the theoretical foundations in linguistic

developments in Arabic. It introduces a linguistic model which approximates to

general linguistics, but it isolates the Arabic linguistic heritage while putting

forward verious aspects of the development of the science of linguistics. From

the basic rules of Arabic linguistics, it proceeds to show the general linguistic'

concepts common to both Arabic and other languages; with the veiw of

presenting this common ground as a contrribuation to theoretical and applied

linguistics. The paper also seeks to present a model in applied linguistics to be

used for teaching both native and non-native speakers …

Exploring Refugee Students’ Second Language (L2) Motivational Selves Through Digital Visual Representations, Nhu Le

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While the ‘travel ban’ immigration executive order, ‘build a wall’ proposal, and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids under the Trump administration are still hot-button issues, the United States (US) is urged to maintain its leadership in addressing a rising global refugee crisis with over 65 million (70.8 million updated from United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR)’s website, https://www.unhcr.org/en-us/figures-at-a-glance.html, as of April 2020) individuals displaced all over the world (Khurma, 2017). Millions of refugee families have fled from life-threatening conditions in their homelands, making perilous journeys to reach host countries in search of a better life. While settling into …

What Makes Your Movies More Engaging For Backers? A Text Analysis Of Kickstarter Projects, Shuman Liu Jul 2020

What Makes Your Movies More Engaging For Backers? A Text Analysis Of Kickstarter Projects, Shuman Liu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Crowdfunding has become an increasingly popular channel for entrepreneurs to raise funds from the crowd to support their startup projects. However, the percentage of crowdfunding projects that can reach their funding goals is relatively small among all crowdfunding websites. Although previous studies have examined various factors such as individual project attributes, social ties that might influence the fund-raising outcomes, the project pitches, as a key part of any crowdfunding proposal, have rarely been studied for their role in driving the crowdfunding success.

In this research, we study a corpus of 1559 movie projects from Kickstarter up to the end of …

Education Through Time: Representations Of U.S. Education On Time Magazine Covers, Dani Kachorsky, Stephanie F. Reid, Kathryn Chapman

Educational Leadership Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined how TIME Magazine has visually represented and communicated ideas about education from TIME Magazine’s inception in 1923 through 2019. Drawing on theories of visual culture and social semiotic approaches to multimodality, the researchers conducted a qualitative multimodal content analysis of 115 covers that featured content related to education and schooling. The findings included (a) names and places are used to suggest authority, power, or relevance in education circles; (b) learning and schooling are presented as having not changed over time; (c) overgeneralized and metonymic representations can stand for broad categories of education stakeholders; (d) schools are presented …
