Using High Leverage Practices To Support Early Childhood Special Education Students And Families During Distance Learning, Anna Branham
Using High Leverage Practices To Support Early Childhood Special Education Students And Families During Distance Learning, Anna Branham
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
In the late winter of 2020, the introduction of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) also introduced families and educators across the nation to the concept of distance learning. While some had already chosen distance learning as the best option for their child, this was the first time in history that it was the sole option for the delivery of instruction. As districts and teachers began to prepare, there were many uncertainties for what distance learning would look like. This was especially true for our youngest learners that were receiving special education services.
While High Leverage Practices (HLPs) in Special Education were …
Painted Over In Brown: Border Art As Visual Discourse Of Resistance, Nicole Rivera
Painted Over In Brown: Border Art As Visual Discourse Of Resistance, Nicole Rivera
Communication ETDs
Borders are created to colonize both land and body. The politically constructed line between the United Stated (U.S.) and Mexico impose physical and emotional trauma through border militarization and immigration policies that consequently separate families and criminalize individuals. Rhetoric centering xenophobic divisions has normalized violence against brown bodies. The relentless effort to continue this divide has led to a genre of art that manifests on the border wall. Artist use the U.S.-Mexico border as a canvas to resist and challenge migratory criminalization by visualizing their opinions to redefine this 1,954-mile line. This research is centered in the study of communication …

A Citation Analysis About Scholarship On Zines, Anne Hays
A Citation Analysis About Scholarship On Zines, Anne Hays
Publications and Research
INTRODUCTION Zine scholarship is a relatively new academic field that has emerged since the late 1990’s. Now that two decades have passed since the publication of Stephen Duncombe’s seminal text, Notes From Underground, it is possible to take a landscape view of how and why zine scholars have studied zines in peer-reviewed journal publications. Knowing how scholars have studied zines can teach us about how zines and zine culture have contributed to academic knowledge. We can also learn which subjects are understudied as zine scholars continue to investigate these curious ephemeral print objects. METHODS This study uses citation analysis …
The Origins And Development Of Textile Writing In Peru, William Mead Cheek
The Origins And Development Of Textile Writing In Peru, William Mead Cheek
Art & Art History ETDs
Scholars once considered Inka khipus (14th-16th CE) to be a technological development unique to the Inka Empire. We now know that the earlier central Andean Wari (6th-11th CE) also made use of khipus, calling into question the Inka primacy of the technology. Understanding the origins and transformation of khipu notation in the Andes sheds light on the ways that information technologies figured into Andean state formation and administration, and impacts larger understandings of how tactile notational systems develop into writing and information storage. This study articulates how, just as the Inka inherited khipu technology …

The Logic Model, Participatory Evaluation And Out Of School Art Programs, Kimberly A. Kleinhans
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The logic model and participatory evaluation are two popular methods of conducting program evaluation. Although both methods have their strengths, each has distinct weaknesses which can be ameliorated by combining them both together. The combined method is used to evaluate an out of school art program at a museum. Using both the logic model and participatory evaluation yielded beneficial results with more accurate representation of program outcomes.
Designing Brain-Computer Interfaces For Sonic Expression, S Venkatesh, E Braund, Er Miranda
Designing Brain-Computer Interfaces For Sonic Expression, S Venkatesh, E Braund, Er Miranda
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are beneficial for patients who are suffering from motor disabilities because it offers them a way of creative expression, which improves mental well-being. BCIs aim to establish a direct communication medium between the brain and the computer. Therefore, unlike conventional musical interfaces, it does not require muscular power. This paper explores the potential of building sound synthesisers with BCIs that are based on steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP). It investigates novel ways to enable patients with motor disabilities to express themselves. It presents a new concept called sonic expression, that is to express oneself purely by the …

Stress Patterns In Bani Saxar Arabic In Jordan: An Optimality Theory Perspective, Doa'a Faiz Al-Momani, Radwan Salem Mahadin
Stress Patterns In Bani Saxar Arabic In Jordan: An Optimality Theory Perspective, Doa'a Faiz Al-Momani, Radwan Salem Mahadin
Jordanian Educational Journal
The present study aims to investigate stress patterns in Bani Saxar Arabic (BSA), an Arabic dialect spoken by Bedouins of the center in Jordan, from an Optimality Theory perspective. The data have been collected via tape-recording and note-taking of the participants' spontaneous speech. The study shows that the foot in the phonological system of BSA is iambic which is parsed from left to right. Degenerate feet are strongly prohibited since content words obey the word bimoraic minimality condition. The study also shows that stress assignment patterns in BSA can be accounted for by a limited number of universal constraints.

An Optimality Analysis Of Syllable-Based Processes In The Speech Of Normal Algerian Arabic-Speaking Children, Samia Azieb, Radwan Salem Mahadin
Jordanian Educational Journal
The present study aims at identifying the most frequent syllable-based processes in the speech of 80 normally developing Algerian children who are acquiring Jijilian Spoken Arabic (JSA) natively, and accounting for that within an Optimality Theory (OT) framework. The children's ages ranged between 1;2 (year;month) and 5 years and they were divided into four age groups of ten month intervals. Importantly, this study attempts to determine whether those processes are language-universal or language-specific. A thorough analysis of the data at the researchers' disposal revealed that Reduplication, Weak and Unstressed syllable deletion, Cluster Simplification, Vowel Epenthesis, and Final Consonant Deletion are …

Assimilation In Jerash Fallaahi Dialect: A Non –Linear Analysis, Muneera Mohammad Jaradat, Radwan Salem Mahadin
Jordanian Educational Journal
The study aims to investigate the phonological assimilation processes which are manifested in Jerash Fallaahi Dialect (JFD), a rural Jordanian dialect spoken in the north of Jordan by 120,000 people. The study uses non-linear approaches, namely, the autosegemental and the feature geometry approaches to analyze the phonological assimilation processes because of their adequacy in representing these processes in a clear way. The data are collected by recording spontaneous conversations of twenty subjects of Jerash Fallaahi people who are native speakers of this dialect. The analysis shows that JFD displays four types of assimilation: First, emphasis assimilation in which the infix …

Exclusionary Beliefs, Multicultural Ideology, Empathy, And Perceived Threat: A Comprehensive Model Of Anti-Immigrant Prejudice, Reigna El-Yashruti
Dissertations
Despite the increased movement of people across national borders, anti-immigrant sentiment continues to pose challenges to immigrant mental health and disrupt intergroup relations. In the USA, where over 14% of the population is comprised of foreign-born individuals, immigrants continue to face prejudice from both the public and political administration. Intergroup Threat Theory (ITT) explains this prejudice as stemming from the perception that the out-group poses a threat to the cultural purity, economic stability, or physical safety of the in-group. Traits that promote group exclusion, such as perceived group superiority (i.e. Right-Wing Authoritarianism; RWA, Social Dominance Orientation; SDO, cultural dominance; CD) …

How Are Key Demographic Indicators Related To Covid-19 Reported In The United States: A Data Review Protocol—Study Description, Charlotte Brasseux, Thoai Ngo, Mingqi Song
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The COVID-19 pandemic is evolving fast and affecting rich and poor countries; however, the social determinants of the health outcomes associated with COVID-19 have not been well characterized. While there is increasing discussion of COVID-19 disparities in the media, no systematic compilation of data exists that synthesizes what and how official reporting platforms disaggregate demographic indicators of COVID-19 testing, cases, hospitalizations, recoveries and deaths. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of what and how federal and local health officials report COVID-19 cases. Having this information nationally and subnationally can help health officials to deploy a more targeted response effort …
Hopes And Struggles: Cross-Generational Metamorphosis Of Educational Beliefs And Practices Between Two-Generations Of Korean-American Parents, Haewan Rho
Graduate Theses & Dissertations
Although Korean-Americans are ubiquitous in contemporary American society, it was only after the enactment of the Immigration Nationality Act of 1965, when a sizable number of Koreans found their way to the U.S. During the two decades of the 1970s and 1980s, about a half-million Koreans immigrated to the U.S.
Almost five decades since their arrival, 2nd-generation Korean-American offspring are now parents raising their own school-aged children - 3rd-generation Korean-Americans. 2nd-generation Korean-Americans who have grown up in the U.S. are largely assimilated to mainstream U.S. society, and therefore their views and practices on various …
Development Of A School Climate Walkthrough Assessment, Jesslynn Rocha Neves
Development Of A School Climate Walkthrough Assessment, Jesslynn Rocha Neves
Doctoral Dissertations
School climate measurement is an increasingly important component of data-driven school improvement efforts. The present study involved the development of the School Climate Walkthrough Assessment (SCWA), a measure for evaluating environmental indicators and oral student reports of school climate alongside the Georgia Elementary School Climate Survey (GESCS), a validated self-report survey of school climate. The SCWA is administered by an adult who rates features of the school environment and then selects a subset of students for a school climate interview. It is meant to provide a snapshot of the general school climate in conjunction with school climate data obtained via …
Do Beetles Have Experiences? How Can We Tell?, Matt Cartmill
Do Beetles Have Experiences? How Can We Tell?, Matt Cartmill
Animal Sentience
We attribute consciousness to other humans because their anatomy and behavior resembles our own and their verbal descriptions of subjective experiences correspond to ours. Nonhuman mammals have somewhat humanlike behavior and anatomy, but without the verbal descriptions. Their sentience is therefore open to Cartesian doubt. Robot "minds" lack humanlike behavior and anatomy, and so their sentience is generally discounted no matter what sentences they generate. Invertebrates lack both neurological similarity and language. Although it may be safest in making moral judgments to assume that some invertebrates are sentient, cogent reasons for thinking so must await an objective causal explanation for …
Augmenting Sign Language Exposure For Hearing Parent-Deaf Child Interaction, Ashley Tenesaca, Jung Yun Oh, Sizhe Li, Wanyin Hu, Zhen Bai
Augmenting Sign Language Exposure For Hearing Parent-Deaf Child Interaction, Ashley Tenesaca, Jung Yun Oh, Sizhe Li, Wanyin Hu, Zhen Bai
Frameless
Above 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who are often non-fluent with sign language. The developmental consequences of early language deprivation experienced by deaf children can be witnessed in their later life outcomes. A significant portion of the deaf population are prone to cognitive delays, poor educational experiences, diminished career opportunities, and psychosocial difficulties (Hall 2017, 961). Given this, it becomes imperative to improve early childhood language experiences. To foster neuropsychological growth, language must be accessible to the child; in the case of deaf children, this would mean early exposure to a visual language...
Finding Commonality: The First Principles Of The Leadership Thought Of Theodore Roosevelt And Traditional Chinese Culture, Elizabeth Summerfield, Yumin Dai
Finding Commonality: The First Principles Of The Leadership Thought Of Theodore Roosevelt And Traditional Chinese Culture, Elizabeth Summerfield, Yumin Dai
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This paper argues that, while the imperative to find global solutions to complex problems like climate change and resource management is agreed, dominant ethical and intellectual thought leadership in many western nations impedes progress. The Cartesian binaries of western post-Enlightenment culture tend instead toward oppositional binary divides where each ‘side’ assumes to be the whole and not a part. And the present and future similarly assume precedence over the past. The paper points to systems thinking as both a method and a practice of wise leadership of past western and eastern societies, including their conservation of natural resources. Two historical …
The Coronavirus Pandemic Supports The Case For Benevolent Authoritarian Leadership, Mark Manolopoulos
The Coronavirus Pandemic Supports The Case For Benevolent Authoritarian Leadership, Mark Manolopoulos
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
[Excerpt] What, if anything, has the coronavirus taught us about leadership? In Australia, at both the federal and state levels, governments have shown unusually strong leadership during the pandemic. Unlike the UK and the USA, our governments responded quite quickly. They speedily and quite uniformly implemented the standard measures (border closures, traveler quarantine, physical distancing, massive financial support to the unemployed and at-risk businesses, etc.). The state and federal governments even formed a “National Cabinet”: whatever the practical benefits, it also showed a front of unity between governments whose relations are typically marked by bickering and disunity.
