Learning Together- The Importance Of Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Education, Myra C. Sanchez
Learning Together- The Importance Of Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Education, Myra C. Sanchez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Studies have shown that parental involvement is key for children to succeed in education, confidence, and their overall development (Project Appleseed, n.d.). However, lack of parental involvement and scarcity of resources and tools for parents to be involved in their children’s education are immense issues that the community of Greenfield, CA face. Children with parents who are actively involved in their education have been linked to higher achievements and graduation rates (Project Appleseed, n.d.). Yet, when parent participation is lacking for a child, they are faced with difficulties that affect their day-to-day life, potentially negatively impacting them in the long …

Behavioral Health Issues Among War Veterans, Michelle Guzman
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Monterey County Military & Veterans Affairs Office is a government agency that helps Veterans and their dependents with Military services that are offered in the Monterey County area. Some of the main problems that returning veterans are facing from coming back from OEF and OIF are behavioral health issues as far as PTSD, substance abuse and many more different health issues. Behaviors required to outlive in a war zone, such as keeping up a consistent state of alertness, may at first decipher into troublesome behaviors in civilian life, such as feeling tense or unsteady and being easily startled. Some …

Splendid Isolation: Va’S Failure To Provide Due Process Protections And Access To Justice To Veterans And Their Caregivers, Yelena Duterte
Journal of Law and Policy
Imagine you are a spouse and caregiver of a severely injured post-9/11 veteran. Your spouse served in the Marine Corps, with several deployments to Iraq. During their last deployment, your spouse sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Due to these injuries, they need consistent care throughout the day. Thankfully, upon their return, the VA provided a caregiver program that allowed you to step away from your job and focus on caring for your spouse full time. As part of this program, you received a caregiver stipend of $2,400 per month, healthcare, and support from …
An Examination Of The Relationship Among Social Services Support, Race, Ethnicity And Recidivism In Justice Involved Mothers, Ne’Shaun Janay Borden
An Examination Of The Relationship Among Social Services Support, Race, Ethnicity And Recidivism In Justice Involved Mothers, Ne’Shaun Janay Borden
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Historically, women have been ignored and minimized in criminology research and theory, leading to gaps in the literature on justice involved women. In recent years, there has been more focus on women as their rates of involvement in the justice system have increased. Previous studies have found that pathways to justice involvement are different for women and men, with women experiencing higher rates of victimization, sexual abuse and mental health concerns. Further, justice involved women are unique in that over 80% are mothers or primary caregivers for minors. General Strain Theory is used to assert that receiving support should reduce …

Legal Ethics And Judicial Law Clerks: A New Doctrinal Account, Andrew Flavelle Martin
Legal Ethics And Judicial Law Clerks: A New Doctrinal Account, Andrew Flavelle Martin
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Judicial law clerks are largely overlooked in the Canadian legal literature. This article provides a new doctrinal account of the ethical obligations of law clerks that is rooted in the fact that at least some of the major work of law clerks constitutes the practice of law—and thus that law clerks’ ethics are lawyers’ ethics. It argues that the lawyer’s duty to encourage respect for the administration of justice transposes some of the ethical obligations of the judge into professional obligations of the law clerk. The article also argues that the law societies’ regulatory and disciplinary jurisdiction over law clerks …
No Right To Counsel, No Access Without: The Poor Child’S Unconstitutional Catch-22, Lisa V. Martin
No Right To Counsel, No Access Without: The Poor Child’S Unconstitutional Catch-22, Lisa V. Martin
Florida Law Review
In the midst of the push for universal access to counsel in civil cases and the increasing proportion of litigants who represent themselves, a critical barrier to access to justice for children has been overlooked. Federal courts have created a catch-22 for child litigants. Children cannot bring claims themselves, so parents must bring the claims on their behalf. Federal courts refuse to allow parents to pursue these claims pro se, stating that parents cannot provide adequate legal representation. Yet, there is no right to counsel in civil cases, and these same courts typically conclude the children’s cases do not warrant …
The Appearance Of Professionalism, Elizabeth B. Cooper
The Appearance Of Professionalism, Elizabeth B. Cooper
Florida Law Review
The dominant image of a lawyer persists: a neatly dressed man wearing a conservative dark suit, white shirt, and muted accessories. Many attorneys can conform to this expectation, but there are a growing number of “outsider” lawyers for whom compliance with appearance norms can challenge their fundamental identities. People of color, women, LGBTQ individuals, religiously observant persons, and those who inhabit intersectional identities are among those who disproportionately remain excluded from the dominant culture and centers of power in the legal profession.
Expectations of appearance conformity create profound concerns that go well beyond style preferences, raising questions of autonomy and …
Addressing Due Process Concerns: Evaluating Proposals For Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform, Kelly Milliron
Addressing Due Process Concerns: Evaluating Proposals For Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform, Kelly Milliron
Florida Law Review
Civil asset forfeiture compromises criminal due process protections for the sake of allowing the government to take property from citizens and pocket the profits. Within the last decade, several news outlets have reported instances where law enforcement agencies took property from citizens–without arresting or convicting them–and spent the proceeds from seized cash, homes, or vehicles on their own agencies. Because the government is often only required to prove that the property was associated with criminal activity by a preponderance of the evidence, many citizens are left without the resources or ability to defend their property, even when they are innocent. …

Sustainable Development Of The Service Sector: Theoretical-Methodological Approach, B.H. Kuziboev
Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education
The services sector is one of the leading sectors of the economy. Today the share of this sector in the gross domestic product and employment is more than 70% in world economy. The service sector began to be studied in the 20th century as a separate discipline and field. Therefore, the theoretical and methodological foundations of this area are not yet perfect. In particular, most of the research in the field of services to date has focused on the socio-economic aspects of it. The purpose of this study is to improve the theoretical and methodological foundations of not only socio-economic …

Supporting School Readiness Through Librarian-Child Interactions In Public Library Storytimes: An Analysis Of Assessment Scores And Influential Factors, Maria Cahill, Hayley Hoffman, Erin E. Ingram, Soohyung Joo
Information Science Faculty Publications
A recent trend in public libraries′ children’s services emphasizes the role of promoting school readiness. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the school readiness efforts present in storytime programs, this study observed and scored 68 public library preschool storytime sessions presented by 35 storytime providers across three states using the CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) measure. The CLASS evaluates adult-child interactions in learning environments within three domains related to positive outcomes in children’s school readiness: emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support. Additionally, the study examined whether differences among CLASS scores were influenced by the population density of …

An Analysis Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Robotic Process Automation In Accounting Functions., Aharon Yoki
An Analysis Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Robotic Process Automation In Accounting Functions., Aharon Yoki
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Robotic Process Automation (“RPA”) is a recently emergent technology that has exploded in popularity as firms seek to capitalize upon the marketing promise of cost reduction and improved efficiency. Yet, with this expansion of RPA, very little is known about the firms’ initial drivers, perceptions during implementation, and how outcomes align with initial expectations. RPA could displace and dramatically change the workforce, but it is unclear how employees will respond to the continuing spread of RPA. This study seeks to fill that important gap in the scholarly literature with an exploratory mixed-methods study. The first chapter is an extensive literature …

Dean's Desk: Iu Maurer Research Focusing On Most Topical Issues Of 2020, Austen L. Parrish
Austen Parrish (2014-2022)
The three major stories of 2020 — the COVID-19 pandemic, the heightened awareness of racial injustice and the election — have made this year one that we will remember. While we couldn’t have envisioned all that would happen at the beginning of the year, our faculty are producing useful and thought-provoking scholarship on all these topics.
I often use my Dean’s Desk columns to celebrate student and alumni achievement, to describe new and innovative programs in our curriculum, or to share how the law school supports and collaborates with community organizations and the courts to provide pro bono legal services …
Migration And Inequalities In The Face Of Covid-19: Economic, Political And Social Context In Mexico And The United States, Claudia Masferrer
Migration And Inequalities In The Face Of Covid-19: Economic, Political And Social Context In Mexico And The United States, Claudia Masferrer
Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research
Our world changed drastically on February 11th 2020 when the World Health Organization announced the name of the new coronavirus disease as COVID-19, and the pandemic was later considered the greatest challenge we have faced since World War II. Although we have started to experience social life in various new ways, the impacts that it will bring are still unknown. In recent years, migration had already undergone different transformations globally, and more changes are expected. How will populations on the move and migrant populations live in the following years post-COVID, and how different actors will respond to these changes, is …

The Cost Effectiveness Of Mental Health Treatment In The Lifetime Of Older Adults With Hiv In New York City: A Markov Approach, Juan J. Delacruz, Mark Brennan-Ing, Andreas Kakolyris, Omar Martinez
Publications and Research
Background
There are noticeable gaps in knowledge regarding the cost and effectiveness of integrated medical and behavioral services for older adults with HIV. Their lifespan is close to the population’s level but their quality of life has sharply declined due to depression and substance use. Mental health disorders are widespread among an aging population with HIV. Objective The aim of this study was to build a decision analytic model to evaluate medical interventions with and without mental health treatment using primary data of 139 older adults with HIV and health outcomes from the literature.
Methods
We tracked the progression of …
