Introducing A Comparative Ecotheology: Islamic Concept Of Basmalah And Luther’S Commentary On The Ten Commandments, Sayed Hassan Akhlaq
Introducing A Comparative Ecotheology: Islamic Concept Of Basmalah And Luther’S Commentary On The Ten Commandments, Sayed Hassan Akhlaq
Consensus
In our trying time of the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper discusses current environmental concerns in light of critical questions about the relationship between God and Mother Earth. This paper addresses this question in an inter-religious context. In order to fulfil its original duty of inculcating spirituality, faith can build a bridge between God and people on a constructive understanding of the Earth. To this end, Christianity and Islam offer notions of divine grace and divine lutf to do this duty. In this paper, I examine two inspiring sources: the Islamic motto of Basmalah, and Luther’s commentary on the Ten Commandments …

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin
A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin
Anthropology Theses and Dissertations
Ask any Cape Town Muslim “what is Islam?”, and the first words that will come out of their mouths will be, “Islam is a way of life”. Among Muslim sexual minorities, the answer is resoundingly the same. Stating that Islam is a way of life indicates there are prescribed rules and codes of conduct that one must follow in order to be a Muslim. As such, the experience of these prescriptions and expectations are culture specific and context-dependent. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which Muslim sexual minorities living in Cape Town, South Africa experience …
Texts, Language, And History In The Madhab-Law Tradition: A Study Of The ShāfiʿĪ School, Tarek Ghanem
Texts, Language, And History In The Madhab-Law Tradition: A Study Of The ShāfiʿĪ School, Tarek Ghanem
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis advances the study of the legal literature from the madhhab-law tradition by way of studying the Shāfiʿī literary tradition and its two most authoritative classics. These two works are al-Nawawī’s (d. 676/1278) digest Minhāj al-ṭālibīn and Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī’s (d. 974/1567) commentary on it, Tuḥfat al-minhāj. This study will provide a typology of the development of the Shāfiʿī juristic texts. The typology is based on an indigenous and coherent periodization centered around an analysis of the intellectual and social developments within the Shāfiʿī legal tradition, not the classical Eurocentric periodization scheme. The main objective of this typology is …

Comparative Analysis Of Values In Islamic Texts And Social Studies Education In Turkey, Deniz Tonga
i.e.: inquiry in education
Social studies education in Turkey is a multi-disciplinary field. One of these disciplines is religion. Social studies education can benefit from religion in terms of nurturing effective citizenship. The purpose of this study is to identify and compare the values intersecting the primary religious sources of Islam and the content of social studies education. Document analysis was employed as the method of comparison. The documents represented the verses of the Qur'an and the words of prophet Muhammad. The analysis focused on the values of respect for rights and freedoms, benevolence, justice, honesty, and respect for differences, among a few others. …

Piety And Mayhem: How Extremist Groups Misuse Religious Doctrine To Condone Violence And Achieve Political Goals, Noah Garber
Religious Studies Honors Papers
This thesis examines the way in which various groups have used religion as a justification for violent action towards political ends. From the Irgun, which carried out terrorist acts in Palestine, to the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas, which has waged war on Israel, to the Buddhist leadership of Myanmar, which has waged a genocidal campaign against Rohingya Muslims living in the country, these groups have employed a narrow interpretation of their religious texts as a means to justify the actions they take. It is explained that it is not the compulsion of religious doctrine itself that is to blame, rather, …

Religious Influences On Muslim Women's College Experiences, Caitlyn Mcnaughton
Religious Influences On Muslim Women's College Experiences, Caitlyn Mcnaughton
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
This project focuses on the influence religion has on Muslim women’s college experiences. I wanted to see the role that religion played in different women’s lives and how it could affect their college life. When I started this project, I knew that all women had different experiences with their religion and would most likely not give the same answers. I interviewed thirteen women from four different universities about their relationship with their religion and how it has impacted their college careers. The women I interviewed came from several different backgrounds, from several states and countries, so their relationship with their …

A Search For The “True Islam” How Muslim Youth Work To Decouple Culture And Religion, Ivy A. Raines
Muslim Student Life
This research explores how young Muslims internalize, understand, and reconcile with competing interpretations of Islam in the diverse ummah of the United States. This ethnographic study is intended to contribute to the understanding of Muslim youth identity construction in the United States among foreign and second-generation Muslims. In addition, the inclusion of foreign participants (i.e. non U.S citizens) included in the sample provide added insight to how temporary relocation affects religious identity, a phenomenon relatively absent in existing scholarship. Finally, this investigation broadens the sociological understanding of religious identity construction and inter-generational differences between immigrant and second- generation Muslims in …

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the future potential impact that the library typology has on society and how the architecture of these spaces can influence usage andchange. Libraries have been one of man-kind’s most inspirational systems that have provided spaces to store information and to educate oneself. As the typology progressed it became an important part of each community and provided patrons with new opportunities that they might not regularly have. With the role that this typology currently takes, it allows for the possibility for improvements of social issues within multiple communities. By focusing on select issues, …

The Qur’Ānic Doctrine Of The Divine Names And The Muslim Understanding Of The Divine, Sibgha Javaid
The Qur’Ānic Doctrine Of The Divine Names And The Muslim Understanding Of The Divine, Sibgha Javaid
College Honors Program
What is the Muslim conception of the Divine? To answer this question, we first must look to the Qur’an, since Muslims consider it God’s self-revelation to human beings. However, when we look to the Qur’an for guidance, we are presented with a God who describes Himself using Names that indicate both His incomparability to creation (tanzīh) and His similarity (tashbīh) to the created order. For example, God refers to Himself as the Hearing (as-Samī), the Seeing (al- Baṣīr), and the Living (al-Ḥayy), but also says He is the Unique (al-Ahad). For many Muslim scholars, these contrasts lead to paradoxes when …

The Rise Of Mono-Ethnic Religious Nationalism In Myanmar And Its Impacts On The Security Situation Of The South Asian Region, S M Anisuz Zaman
Dissertations and Theses
In spite of the technological advancement and progress of liberalism, religion has remained an essential aspect of individual and national life in many countries. In many societies, religion has manifested elements of extremism, which ultimately perpetuates violence and destruction. This radical religious phenomenon is much predominant in the Southeast and South Asian region, including the country known as Myanmar. Myanmar has become a classic example of the religious fusion of politics and social life. The hybrid form of emerging democratic tenets, albeit under military sponsorship in Myanmar, provides a breeding ground for religious nationalism, with dire consequences for religious minorities. …

The Importance Of Richard Lionheart In The Third Crusade, Stefan Caplazi Mr.
The Importance Of Richard Lionheart In The Third Crusade, Stefan Caplazi Mr.
Young Historians Conference
The impact that King Richard III of England had on the third crusade is apparent through his limited strategic victories on the battlefield. Richard III did well with his limited resources, but ultimately failed to retake Jerusalem. Due to unforeseeable events, Richard III lost his military support before embarking on much of the campaign to regain the Holy Land. These events proved detrimental to his task. While he was an excellent strategist and fearsome leader, Richard III simply lacked the resources and troops to succeed. This paper argues that with more military support, Richard “The Lionheart” would have retaken the …
Islamophobia And The Muslim Other, Alexandria Von Eberstein
Islamophobia And The Muslim Other, Alexandria Von Eberstein
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
I chose to discuss attitudes toward Muslims in the United States since September 11, 2001. There are currently 3.45 million Muslims living in the United States, of which about 75% were born Muslim, and they typically face discrimination every day. The discrimination ranges, but it exists on the most extreme and the mildest levels. The FBI reported in 2017 that, of those 3.45 million Muslims in the United States, nearly 20% suffered from a religious hate crime. That is 690,000 Muslims suffering a hate crime that only occurred due to their religion and was bad enough to report to the …

Scrivere di Islam. Raccontare la diaspora (Writing About Islam. Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the …
Studi Maqashid Asy-Syariah Atas Peristiwa Pidana: Pelecehan Seksual Melalui Media Elektronik Dalam Penagihan Utang-Piutang Fintech Ilegal
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
The rise and implementation of Fintech is a result of the formation of lifestyle and consumptive behavior. This pattern of consumption behavior bases the use of commodities on desire and not on need. This happens because people continually want to complete their desire to own or use something that is beyond their needs even though they are still financially unable. One of the behaviors was exploited by Fintech, which provides financing services illegally. Illegal Fintechs are considered dangerous because they are not subject to and comply with existing regulations so that the potential deviation in the implementation process can be …

Home is one of the primary needs that must be reached. The importance of sufficing these needs causes the demand for homes is increasing every year. Compared to 2018, the growth of Home Ownership Loans (KPR) in January 2019 increased by 147 basis points (bps) from the original 10.89% to 12.36%. It is estimated that credit growth is expected to increase in line with optimism about the strengthening monetary and economic conditions, supported by the risk of lending that is relatively well maintained. However, there is one custom that causes polemic in the community, namely the prohibition of marriage of Sasuku. Whereas in Islamic Law there are no prohibition of marriage with one tribe. The Constitution as a form of collective agreement is an important document containing values to be the highest referral system in regulating the life of nation and state. Looking at the sociological fact that Muslims are the majority in Indonesia, the spirit that was built at the beginning was to ensure the absolute necessity of how the basic values and main concepts of Islam can be fulfilled, while keeping in mind the needs and ensuring the rights of people from other religions. The view of some Muslims who assume founding father Indonesia has injured the spirit of the struggle of …

The regulation accommodated the society’s need by arranging punishment for the perpetrators of sexual assault affecting children cases. Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
The paper examines democracy and secularism in Malaysia, a state rooted in Islam, and how it has been implemented in a country with a majority Muslim population. It briefly outlines how Islam was brought to the region and how British colonialism was able to implement secularism and democratic practices in such a way that religion was not wholeheartedly erased. Indeed, peaceful decolonization combined with a history of accommodating elites served to promote a newly independent Malaysia, to create a constitutional democracy which declares Islam as the religion of the Federation, and simultaneously religious freedom. Despite the constitution, the United Malays …

Panji In The Age Of Motion; An Investigation Of The Development Of Panji-Related Arts Around Java, Adrian Perkasa
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The first half of the twentieth century in Indonesia is often remembered as the Age of Motion. The term “motion” (pergerakan) is invariably used in history textbooks for students and in the official Indonesian historiography: Sejarah nasional Indonesia (Kartodirdjo, Poesponegoro, and Notosusanto 1975; Poesponegoro and Notosusanto 2008) and in the new edition, Indonesia dalam arus sejarah (Lapian and Abdullah 2012). Political movements in Indonesia always dominated the discourses of pergerakan at the expense of developments in other sectors, including culture. This cultural development, particularly in Java, was intricately intertwined with the upsurge in Javanese and then Indonesian nationalism, an expansion …

For the third time in three decades world leaders reaffirmed their promise of "Education For All" when adopting Sustainable Development Goal 4 in 2015. It is the most far-reaching commitment to quality and equity in education so far, yet, there is no consensus on what the agenda means in practice. With a decade left until the 2030 deadline, Grading Goal Four calls upon the education community to engage more thoughtfully and critically with SDG 4 and related efforts. As an ever-growing number of actors and initiatives claim to contribute to its achievement, it is becoming clear that the ambitious but …
