Project Operation Whitecoat: Military Experimentation, Seventh-Day Adventism And Conscientious Cooperation, Alicia Gutierrez
History in the Making
From 1954-1973, the U.S. Army established an unlikely alliance with the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church and their unequivocal support for a series of biomedical experiments called Project Operation Whitecoat (POW). In a letter dated October 19, 1954, Dr. T. R. Flaiz, Secretary of the Medical Department of the General Conference of SDAs wrote to then- Surgeon General Major George E. Armstrong, “the medical research project which you have under way… offers an excellent opportunity for these young men to render a service which will be of value not only to military medicine but to public health generally.”1 While the notion …

Healthcare Barriers For Congolese Refugee Children In Louisville, Ky: Parental Perception And Narratives Through Focus Group Discussions, Zheyi Teoh, Brit Anderson, Annie Rominger
Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Background: There are up to 3500 refugees who resettle in Kentucky annually with 66% of refugee children originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Little is known about the barriers to healthcare perceived by Congolese parents. This information can direct interventions to improve the care of these children.
Methods: Focus group discussions (FGD) were used to allow families to share personal anecdotes, compare experiences, and encourage discussion between group members. Between August 2018 to May 2020, three FGDs were conducted with Congolese parents who have at least one child ≤18 years old. An interpreter was utilized for each session …

Development And Implementation Of An Influenza Point-Of-Care Testing Service In A Chain Community Pharmacy Setting, Rachel Hardin, Pheli Roberts, Brooke Hudspeth, Angela Tracy, Lauren Baldwin, Michael Raque, Clark D. Kebodeaux
Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications
Point-of-care testing is becoming increasingly commonplace in community pharmacy settings. These tests are often used in the management of chronic disease, such as blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c and lipid levels, but can also be used for acute conditions such as influenza infection and group A streptococcus pharyngitis. When used for these acute infections, point-of-care tests can allow for pharmacist-initiated treatment. In this study, an influenza point-of-care testing service was developed and implemented in a chain community pharmacy setting and a retrospective review was conducted to assess the service. Of patients tested, 29% tested positive for influenza A and/or B; 92% …

Recent evidence from cancer research indicates that lactate exerts a suppressive effect on innate immune responses in cancer. This study investigated the mechanisms by which lactate suppresses macrophage pro-inflammatory responses. Macrophages [Raw 264.7 and bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs)] were treated with LPS in the presence or absence of lactate. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, NF-κB and YAP activation and nuclear translocation were examined. Our results show that lactate significantly attenuates LPS stimulated macrophage TNF-α and IL-6 production. Lactate also suppresses LPS stimulated macrophage NF-κB and YAP activation and nuclear translocation in macrophages. Interestingly, YAP activation and nuclear translocation are required for LPS …
The Impact Of Emotional Regulation On Treatment Burden In The Primary Care Population, Nathanial Schreiner
The Impact Of Emotional Regulation On Treatment Burden In The Primary Care Population, Nathanial Schreiner
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
For the 60% of the US population living with one or more chronic conditions, understanding how emotional regulation contributes to treatment burden is an unstudied, yet potentially important dynamic affecting self-management adherence.
Our findings indicate emotional regulation appears to be an important factor in determining the level of cumulative, medication and dietary treatment burden a patient experiences when engaging in their daily self-management regimen. Most importantly, findings demonstrate that improving emotional regulation can reduce the amount of burden a patient experiences thereby improving subsequent adherence to a self-management regimen.

Anemia in women of reproductive age is highly prevalent globally and remains a public health problem. In Ethiopia, despite efforts to minimize the burden of anemia, it is still a moderate public health problem. Anemia has various etiologies including nutritional deficiency, parasitic infection, and inflammation. The aim of this study was to examine contributing factors to anemia in lactating women. Following ethical approval, and six months after delivery, all lactating women (n = 150) were recruited to participate in this study from eight randomly selected rural villages. Anthropometric and socio-economic factors were assessed. From each, a blood sample was collected …

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background The emergency department (ED) is an essential component of the medical service offered in any hospital. However, the published information about patients' profile and utilization of emergency services in both developing and developed countries is scarce. Visits caused by nonserious diseases remain a burden on the ED, preventing efficient and effective use of health services and compromising quality. Aim This study aimed to characterize the profile of patients visiting the emergency service in El-Behera Hospitals (Damanhour Teaching Hospital, Central Abohommos Hospital, and General Kafr Eldawar Hospital), describing the epidemiology of patient presentations and outcome in the ED. Patients and …

Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
The success of tuberculosis treatment is based upon the prescription pattern following Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program/National Tuberculosis Elimination Program/World Health Organization guidelines, reflecting the burden of the disease which is increasing yearly. This implicates the variations in prescriptions advised in the treatment of tuberculosis. The present study was aimed to evaluate the prescription patterns of tuberculosis treatment in a tertiary hospital at Andhra Pradesh, India. Ninety-two patients were included in the study after obtaining ethical approval and informed consent. The prescription patterns were evaluated and compared to the standard guidelines. The mean age of the patients was 38.72 and …

Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). On 30 January 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of Covid-19 realizes a public health emergency of international concern. Because of the primary involvement of the respiratory system, chest CT is strongly recommended in suspected Covid-19 cases, for both initial and follow-up. We present the case of a Covid-19 patient, a 57-year-old man, with a typical HRCT course of OP reaction.

The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the frailty of our societies from too many points of view to look away. We need to understand why we were all caught unprepared. On the one hand, we have all short memories. As we forget too quickly, we were unable to recognize key factors influencing response and preparedness to public health threats. For many years, economic evaluation pushed governments all over the world to cut resources for public health systems, with COVID-19 pandemic the question arises: do we spend too much or too little on health care? What is the right amount to spend …
