Effects Of Covid-19 On Education In Healthcare And Stem, Jessica Hallett, Santanu De
Biology Faculty Articles
The Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic halted face-to-face classes in most schools, colleges, and universities worldwide, necessitating virtual instruction. This reformation of academics impacted every field of study, especially those students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and in the realm of healthcare science education. Ranging from middle/high school to undergraduate and graduate programs, STEM degrees entail rigorous curricula integrating extensive lectures on theoretical topics, and laboratory exercises to apply those concepts in a practical setting. Likewise, healthcare education involves hands-on, clinical lab components working on patients, guided by supervisors. The guidelines developed by the …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The ecological health of port environments, which are dynamic and hotspots of anthropogenic activities, can be analyzed using specific pathogenic bacteria as they provide definite evidence and source of pollution. The influence of seasons and environmental settings on total bacterial count (TBC), distribution of fecal indicators, and Vibrio spp. was explored in Visakhapatnam port, located along the east coast of India. South-west monsoon had a significant influence on TBC, fecal indicators, and Vibrio spp., and the abundance was influenced by the eutrophic environment in the inner harbour. Fecal indicators were one order higher in sub-surface water when compared with sediment, …

Speaking Truth To Power And Power Speaking Truth: Accurate And Reliable Information In A Pandemic, Leslie E. Gerwin
San Diego Law Review
In this Article, I offer some preliminary ideas for how we might engage in a collective project to enable our government to improve its capacity to help us understand and respond to a future existential health threat. I first deconstruct the government informing process to analyze the points of information contestation based upon the realities we are experiencing. I then outline a project to create a space in which respected experts mediate knowledge claims and moderate contested opinions regarding the human risk of, and government response to, a public health threat. This idea embraces the ambitious goal of educating and …

More Than A Mask: Stay-At-Home Orders And Religious Freedom, Dorit Rubinstein Reiss, Madeline Thomas
More Than A Mask: Stay-At-Home Orders And Religious Freedom, Dorit Rubinstein Reiss, Madeline Thomas
San Diego Law Review
COVID-19 has changed our legal universe. Many states are responding by issuing stay-at-home orders, and as cases rise, may have to prohibit gatherings again. One issue states and courts have to grapple with is the relationship between stay-at-home orders and religion. Stay-at-home orders that require closing down churches may be challenged as violating the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom. Under our current jurisprudence, these cases may be handled under a highly deferential standard or under strict scrutiny—depending on the specific order in question, as well as on whether the state has a Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). We recommend, …

The Covid Cases: A Preliminary Assessment Of Judicial Review Of Public Health Powers During A Partisan And Polarized Pandemic, Wendy E. Parmet
San Diego Law Review
In response to the very real possibility that there will be insufficient resources to properly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, states have been developing crisis standard of care plans, which may authorize the prioritization of patients for scarce resources based on changing circumstances and increased demands. Due to the dearth of necessary resources and trained professionals during a public health emergency, the standard of care that clinicians may be able to provide during the COVID-19 pandemic may, by necessity, depart significantly from standard nonemergency medical practice. Adhering to crisis standards of care may expose health care providers and entities to …

Prisons And Pandemics, Camila Strassle, Benjamin E. Berkman
San Diego Law Review
This Article focuses on how to balance public health, public safety, and incarcerated people’s legal rights when implementing a program for early release from confinement. Ethical, epidemiological, and legal arguments all point to a need for an immediate reduction in the incarcerated population. However, this leaves open several points of reasonable disagreement about how to manage early release. These include how to set priorities for processing and releasing individuals across the country. For example, officials could prioritize screening individuals who are housed in facilities that have been hit hard by infection; or by screening individuals who have a safe place …

The metabolic pathways in the apicoplast organelle of Plasmodium parasites are similar to those in plastids in plant cells and are suitable targets for malaria drug discovery. Some phytotoxins released by plant pathogenic fungi have been known to target metabolic pathways of the plastid; thus, they may also serve as potential antimalarial drug leads. An EtOAc extract of the broth of the endophyte Botryosphaeria dothidea isolated from a seed collected from a Torreya taxifolia plant with disease symptoms, showed in vitro antimalarial and phytotoxic activities. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of the extract afforded a mixture of two known isomeric phytotoxins, FRT-A and …

Effect Of Treadmill Exercise And Probiotic Ingestion On Motor Coordination And Brain Activity In Adolescent Mice, Junechul Kim, Bo-Eun Yoon
Kinesiology Faculty Publications (Archived)
High-intensity exercise can lead to chronic fatigue, which reduces athletic performance. On the contrary, probiotic supplements have many health benefits, including improvement of gastrointestinal health and immunoregulation. However, the effects of probiotics combined with exercise interventions on motor functions and brain activity have not been fully explored. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the effects of probiotic supplements and aerobic exercise on motor function, immune response, and exercise intensity and probiotic ingestion. After four weeks of intervention, the motor functions were assessed by rotarod test, then the levels of cytokines, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and glutamate were detected. The improvement caused …

Melanin is s most widely distributed pigment and is found in bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. Melanogenesis is under complex regulatory control by multiple agents interacting through pathways activated by hormonal and receptor-dependent and -independent mechanisms. There are about 20 genes that are involved in the biochemical pathway of melanogenesis and its regulation, which include: tyrosinase, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, melanocortin1 receptor, adenylate cyclase, protein kinase A. Human melanogenesis regulatory proteins such as MAPK1, CREB3, and CREBP, have binary interaction with the protein of herpesvirus, hepatitis C virus, Human immunodeficiency virus type 1, Simian virus 40, and Human adenovirus A and …

The Role Of Exposure To Communication Channels, Institutional Trust And Moral Norm In Predicting Pm2.5 Risk-Reduction Intention In China: A Study Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior., Tong Lin
Theses - ALL
Understanding and encouraging people to perform PM2.5 risk-reduction behaviors is essential to reduce the health risks caused by PM2.5 and to promote a healthy lifestyle. This study aims to predict the effects of psychological factors (attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm and moral norm) on individual’s PM2.5 risk-reduction intention. It also looks into how contextual factors (exposure to communication channels and institutional trust) can influence behavioral intention and make contributions to the predicting powers of the theory of planned behavior. To achieve this goal, I analyze the secondary survey data that randomly selected residents living in three regions known for …

Acute Gastroenteritis Due To Blastocystis Hominis In An Adolescent Boy, Ramesh Bhat Yellanthoor
Open Access archive
Acute gastroenteritis with persistent vomiting, high degree fever and blood streaking stools often suggests bacterial aetiology in children. Authors report a 13-year-old boy presenting with acute watery diarrhoea with persistent vomiting, fever of 103°F, abdominal cramps and blood streaking stools who failed to show any response to parenteral third-generation cephalosporin for 72 hours. The stool examination revealed numerous cystic and amoeboid forms of Blastocystis hominis. Metronidazole was started and the boy promptly responded within 24 hours. There was no recurrence of symptoms then onwards. The case highlights the crucial stool examination in case of acute diarrhoeal disease for rare aetiology.

Woman and Child Health
Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a simple intervention that can prevent childhood deaths from severe diarrhea and dehydration. In a previous study, we mapped the use of ORS treatment subnationally and found that ORS coverage increased over time, while the use of home-made alternatives or recommended home fluids (RHF) decreased, in many countries. These patterns were particularly striking within Senegal, Mali, and Sierra Leone. It was unclear, however, whether ORS replaced RHF in these locations or if children were left untreated, and if these patterns were associated with health policy changes.
Methods: We used a Bayesian geostatistical model and …

Failure To Protect?: Applying The Drri-2 Scales To Rwanda And Srebrenica, Elizabeth Mason
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article critically reanalyses the action, or lack of action, taken by UN peacekeepers in Rwanda and Srebrenica in the 1990's. The lack of action of UN peacekeepers in Rwanda and Bosnia has long been criticised as a conscious decision made by peacekeepers to not act in defence of those being targeted but instead to act as bystanders of genocide when they had the ability to prevent acts of genocide taking place. This article re-examines the actions of the UN command under Romeo Dallaire in Rwanda and Thom Karremans in Srebrenica, Bosnia in terms of the stress-related factors which influenced …
