Covid-19: Pathogenesis, Genetic Polymorphism, Clinical Features And Laboratory Findings, Recep Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
COVID-19 caused by a novel agent SARS-CoV-2 progressed to a pandemic condition and resulted in a major public health concern worldwide, leading to social and economic issues at the same time. The pathogenesis of COVID-19 starts with the bonding of the virus to ACE2 receptors expressed in many tissues, and the triggered excessive immune response plays a critical role in the course of the disease. The cytokine storm that occurs upon excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines is considered responsible for the severe progression of the disease and the organ damage. However, the accurate pathophysiological mechanism of the disease, which progresses …

Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic and inflammatory disorder that is mainly present along the ancient Silk Road, from the Mediterranean Sea to East Asia. A wide range of prevalence figures (0.1-420/100,000) have been reported for BD, also among Turkish populations of similar genetic background living in different countries. Recently, a decline in the incidence of BD and a change of the disease spectrum to less-severe manifestations have been reported from Japan and Korea, two genetically homogenous, affluent populations with limited immigration. It was hypothesized that a decline in infectious diseases, especially dental/periodontal infections, associated with the improvement in oral …

In Vitro Antibiotic Resistance Of Staphylococci Isolated From Different Animal Species, Nurdan Karacan Sever, Mehmet Akan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The purpose of this study is to investigate resistance to antibiotics of Staphylococcus species isolated from various samples belonging to different animal species. Among 48 Staphylococcus spp. strains, Staphylococcus intermedius was the most common species, followed by S. aureus, S. epidermidis, S. hyicus, S. saprophyticus. In a total of 48 Staphylococcus strains, the highest antibiotic resistance was observed to oxacillin (79.17%), tetracycline (39.58%), and ampicillin and cefoxitin (31.25%). Of 48 Staphylococcus strains, 42 showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent, while 23 of the strains had multidrug resistance. Antimicrobial resistance to tetracycline and ampicillin, erythromycin, streptomycin was detected frequently …

Effects Of Carvacrol Administration On Motor Function Following Spinal Ischemia Andreperfusion, Ayhan Çeti̇nkaya, Çağri Çamsari
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The sensitivity of the medulla spinalis to ischemia and reperfusion has been shown in previous in vitro and in vivo studies. However, less is known about the effects of carvacrol administration following ischemia and reperfusion. It was hypothesized that carvacrol might have protective effects on motor neuron functionunder ischemia- and reperfusion-induced oxidative stress. A total of 24 adult Wistar rats were divided into three groups: group I (control group; n = 8), group II (spinal ischemia and reperfusion group; n = 8), and group III (spinal ischemia and reperfusion + carvacrol group; n = 8). Ischemia and reperfusion were performed …

Order Diptera As A Model In The Studies Of Insect Immunity: A Review, Danail Ilchev Takov, Peter Vladislavov Ostoich, Andrey Ivanov Tchorbanov, Daniela Kirilova Pilarska
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Order Diptera is the most important group of animals when it comes to insect immunity research. The largest share of experimental data in the group falls on the genus Drosophila - a model species with a number of advantages. Other crucial representatives are those of the mosquito group, as they are vectors of a number of infectious diseases infecting higher vertebrates and humans. As representatives of the genera, Anopheles, Aedes and Culex are very significant model organisms. In total, more than 40 dipteran species are being actively studied as models in various aspects related to immunity. Together with the representatives …
