The Role Of Female Headed Households Caring For Children And No Spouse In Gentrification In Los Angeles, Jovita Murillo Jan 2020

The Role Of Female Headed Households Caring For Children And No Spouse In Gentrification In Los Angeles, Jovita Murillo

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Gentrification is the “in-migration of a relatively well-off, middle- and upper-middle-class population” into historically marginalized communities (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); Matsuoka et al. 2017). Literature has repeatedly shown that gentrification is placing cost and rent-burdened residents at risk of displacement due to the hike in housing prices and rents. Most cost and rent burdened households are female-headed households caring for children without a spouse (FHHCCNS) (Colburn and Allen, 2018). Given there is a lack of literature describing the role of gender in gentrification, this descriptive study aims to describe the gentrification profile in Los Angeles using multiple …

Social Distance, Stigma, And Help-Seeking: An Exploration Of Autism Beliefs In The Southern United States, Christian Shannon Courson Jan 2020

Social Distance, Stigma, And Help-Seeking: An Exploration Of Autism Beliefs In The Southern United States, Christian Shannon Courson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stigma has been associated with physical and mental health conditions and their treatment long before formal care systems. Negative perceptions within the lay community, such as stigma and social distancing, negatively impact individuals with autism and their families. The purpose of this study was to explore factors associated with autism stigma among laypeople in the Southern United States. Specifically, the study explored how demographics, knowledge, and familiarity are related to social distancing and stigma, and how these factors relate to beliefs about and intentions of help-seeking. Using a lay sample (N=108) of rural Southern towns, survey data was collected in …

The Enhanced Danger Of Physicians’ Off-Label Prescribing, Doriane Lambelet Coleman, Philip M. Rosoff Jan 2020

The Enhanced Danger Of Physicians’ Off-Label Prescribing, Doriane Lambelet Coleman, Philip M. Rosoff

Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a major challenge to both technologically advanced and resource-poor countries. There are currently no effective treatments for severe disease other than supportive care and advanced life support measures, including the use of mechanical ventilators. With the urgency and necessity bred from desperation, there have been many calls to utilize unproven therapies, such as hydroxychloroquine, for which little evidence of efficacy exists. We have previously argued that such off-label use, while legal, is problematic (and even dangerous) and have suggested several regulatory remedies that could protect patients and advance their interests while preserving the reasonable authority of …

Emergence Of Oscillations In A Simple Epidemic Model With Demographic Data, Meredith Greer, Raj Saha, Alex Gogliettino, Chialin Yu, Kyle Zollo-Venecek Jan 2020

Emergence Of Oscillations In A Simple Epidemic Model With Demographic Data, Meredith Greer, Raj Saha, Alex Gogliettino, Chialin Yu, Kyle Zollo-Venecek

All Faculty Scholarship

A simple susceptible–infectious–removed epidemic model for smallpox, with birth and death rates based on historical data, produces oscillatory dynamics with remarkably accurate periodicity. Stochastic population data cause oscillations to be sustained rather than damped, and data analysis regarding the oscillations provides insights into the same set of population data. Notably, oscillations arise naturally from the model, instead of from a periodic forcing term or other exogenous mechanism that guarantees oscillation: the model has no such mechanism. These emergent natural oscillations display appropriate periodicity for smallpox, even when the model is applied to different locations and populations. The model and datasets, …

The year 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of including intellectual property rights within the larger agenda of trade. While the marriage between trade and intellectual property was always uncomfortable, COVID-19 exposed the flaws, failures and the inadequacy of the trade agenda to harmonise intellectual property rights, particularly for patents in pharmaceuticals. Typically, the United States through its questionable United States Trade Representative (USTR) process exposed the vulnerabilities of the intellectual property systems of the rest of the world. COVID-19 exposed the manner in which the so-called ‘superior’ intellectual property regime of the US left the country with a weak health-care …

Covid-19, Serendipity, And Strange Interlude: Gloria In Absurdicum With An Apology To Ovid, Lawrence Charles Parish, W Clark Lambert

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

The absurd edicts initially issued by several governors, including those of Michigan and New York, prohibiting physicians from ordering hydroxychloroquine for patients suspected of or diagnosed with COV-19 are reprehensible. Their reasoning is beyond the pale.

Hydroxychloroquine was first approved by the FDA in 1955 and has a remarkable safety record in its use as a preventative for malaria and in the treatment of several immunologic and/or light induced diseases. Its use came about serendipitously, and its mechanism of action is unclear, but the fact remains that it seems to work.

Mapping Misinformation In The Coronavirus Outbreak, Ana Santos Rutschman

All Faculty Scholarship

The coronavirus outbreak has sent ripples of fear and confusion across the world. These sentiments—and our collective responses to the outbreak—are made worse by rampant misinformation surrounding the new strain of the virus, COVID-2019. In this post, I survey some of the most pervasive areas of tentacular coronavirus-related misinformation that has proliferated online -- as well as the responses of social media companies like YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest and TikTok that may ultimately prove inadequate given the magnitude of the problem.

The Case For Face Shields: Improving The Covid-19 Public Health Policy Toolkit, Timothy L. Wiemken, Ana Santos Rutschman, Robert Gatter

All Faculty Scholarship

As the United States battles the later stages of the first wave of COVID-19 and faces the prospect of future waves, it is time to consider the practical utility of face shields as an alternative or complement to face masks in the policy guidance. Without face shields specifically noted in national guidance, many areas may be reluctant to allow their use as an alternative to cloth face masks, even with sufficient modification.

In this piece, we discuss the benefits of face shields as a substitute to face masks in the context of public health policy. We further discuss the implications …

Why The Government Shouldn't Pay People To Get Vaccinated Against Covid-19, Ana Santos Rutschman Jan 2020

Why The Government Shouldn't Pay People To Get Vaccinated Against Covid-19, Ana Santos Rutschman

All Faculty Scholarship

As several pharmaceutical companies approach the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking authorization to bring COVID-19 vaccines to market, concerns about vaccine mistrust cloud the prospects of imminent vaccination efforts across the globe. These concerns have prompted some commentators to suggest that governments may nudge vaccine uptake by paying people to get vaccinated against COVID-19. This post argues that, even if potentially viable, this idea is undesirable against the backdrop of a pandemic marked by the intertwined phenomena of health misinformation and mistrust in public health authorities. Even beyond the context of COVID-19, paying for vaccination is likely to remain …

Business Continuity Planning For A Medium-Sized Hotel Under Covid-19 Outbreak, Arunlak Tangtanapaiboon Jan 2020

Business Continuity Planning For A Medium-Sized Hotel Under Covid-19 Outbreak, Arunlak Tangtanapaiboon

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Business Continuity Planning is a subjective conceptual framework prominently used in operations related to supply chain, information technology, or governmental organizations. In this research, we have applied the concept of business continuity planning to a service business during the COVID–19 outbreaks, whose aim is to determine the business continuity objective with the maximum operational tolerable period. The proposed framework has been evaluated based on the ANOVA Test of a guest's service questionnaire of a hotel in Rayong, Thailand. We find that, by reducing business operating cost via staff working hours reduction and limiting service functions of the hotel to the …

Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is a need for a better understanding of the correlation of vaginal microbiota with adverse preterm outcomes. Our study aimed to explore how the vaginal microbiota influences the outcome of the preterm infants, determine whether fecal microbiota in premature infants differs from that in term infants, and explore the microbiota pattern in preterm neonates who received multiple antibiotics. Method: A prospective cohort design was used to enroll 33 women admitted in spontaneous labor between 25 to 36 weeks, and 33 controls matched for age and parity …

First-Time Characterization Of Viable But Non-Culturable Proteus Mirabilis: Induction And Resuscitation, Reham Wasfi, G. R. Abdellatif, H. M. Elshishtawy, Hossam M. Ashour Jan 2020

First-Time Characterization Of Viable But Non-Culturable Proteus Mirabilis: Induction And Resuscitation, Reham Wasfi, G. R. Abdellatif, H. M. Elshishtawy, Hossam M. Ashour

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Pathogenic bacteria can enter into a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state under unfavourable conditions. Proteus mirabilis is responsible for dire clinical consequences including septicaemia, urinary tract infections and pneumonia, but is not a species previously known to enter VBNC state. We suggested that stress-induced P. mirabilis can enter a VBNC state in which it retains virulence. P. mirabilis isolates were incubated in extreme osmotic pressure, starvation, low temperature and low pH to induce a VBNC state. Resuscitation was induced by temperature upshift and inoculation in tryptone soy broth with Tween 20 and brain heart infusion broth. Cellular ultrastructure and gene …

The Human Right To Education: Definition, Research And Annotated Bibliography, Jootaek Lee Jan 2020

The Human Right To Education: Definition, Research And Annotated Bibliography, Jootaek Lee

Emory International Law Review

The role and function of education cannot be emphasized enough. Education enhances and develops human abilities, consciousness, identity, integrity, potential, and even power. However, no literature or other instrument comprehensively and consistently defines education. This inconsistent approach to the human right to education is more harmful than beneficial. Considering a wide variety of international instruments and literature, this Article will seek to provide a comprehensive and consistent definition of the human right to education. This Article will also provide an annotated bibliography of various sources which can facilitate the research of scholars and practitioners in this field. A list of …

Can We Learn To Incentivize Morality?: A Discussion Of Biotechnology On An International Level, Shannon M. Patrick Jan 2020

Can We Learn To Incentivize Morality?: A Discussion Of Biotechnology On An International Level, Shannon M. Patrick

Emory International Law Review

This Comment argues that if a group of people, or the international community as a whole, should at any point wish to prevent the ownership of morally controversial biotechnology, then the international community should take steps towards international uniformity. Uniformity in these decisions would arguably need to include uniformity on subject matter eligibility decisions across countries.

In Sickness Or In Health: The Impact Of Disease Burdens On The Likelihood Of Violent Conflict, Devyn Escalanti Jan 2020

In Sickness Or In Health: The Impact Of Disease Burdens On The Likelihood Of Violent Conflict, Devyn Escalanti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This paper expands on the relationship between disease burdens and the onset of violent conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa from 1990-2012. Most studies have focused on conflict as a cause of HIV transmission, while some suggest that HIV infection rates, by substantially reducing life-expectancy, increase the onset of violence by lowering the opportunity cost of rebelling for HIV-positive individuals. This paper argues that to the degree that life expectancy is important to opportunity costs, it is more likely driven by other factors. First, I argue preventable diseases that are less connected to individual decision-making, and the presence of poor health infrastructure …

Nutrition And Health Status Of Hemodialysis Patients In Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tanjina Rahman Jan 2020

Nutrition And Health Status Of Hemodialysis Patients In Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tanjina Rahman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Methods to identify patients at risk for End stage renal disease (ESRD) are a high priority in Bangladesh, where kidney transplants/dialysis options are limited and costly. Every year, 35,000 to 40,000 people reach ESRD in Bangladesh, but currently available facilities can hardly accommodate only 9000 to 10,000 new patients with twice weekly dialysis and the remaining 66% have no access to any kind of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the form of dialysis or transplantation. Nutrition is an important factor in maintaining good health of hemodialysis patients. However, data on nutritional status of Bangladeshi dialysis patients is limited and is …

Quantitative Analysis Of A Stochastic Seitr Epidemic Model With Multiple Stages Of Infection And Treatment, Olusegun M. Otunuga, Mobolaji O. Ogunsolu

Mathematics Faculty Research

We present a mathematical analysis of the transmission of certain diseases using a stochastic susceptible-exposed-infectious-treated-recovered (SEITR) model with multiple stages of infection and treatment and explore the effects of treatments and external fluctuations in the transmission, treatment and recovery rates. We assume external fluctuations are caused by variability in the number of contacts between infected and susceptible individuals. It is shown that the expected number of secondary infections produced (in the absence of noise) reduces as treatment is introduced into the population. By defining RT,n and ℛT,n as the basic deterministic and stochastic reproduction …

Inhibition Of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2: Toward New Therapeutics For Antimicrobial-Resistant Gonorrhea, Jonathan M. Turner Jan 2020

Inhibition Of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2: Toward New Therapeutics For Antimicrobial-Resistant Gonorrhea, Jonathan M. Turner

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the United States, with nearly 600,000 cases reported in 2018 by the Centers for Disease Control. Alarmingly, the causative agent Neisseria gonorrhoeae has developed resistance to a number of antimicrobials over the last century. With limited options remaining, the CDC now recommends dual therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin to decrease the likelihood of resistance development. However, strains with combined cephalosporin and macrolide resistance have now emerged, raising concerns of a post-antibiotic future in which untreatable gonorrhea would impose enormous human and economic cost. The discovery and development of novel …

Antibiotic Disruption Of Oral Microbiota Dysregulates The Osteoimmune Response And Alveolar Bone Homeostasis In The Healthy Periodontium, Brooks Albert Swanson Jan 2020

Antibiotic Disruption Of Oral Microbiota Dysregulates The Osteoimmune Response And Alveolar Bone Homeostasis In The Healthy Periodontium, Brooks Albert Swanson

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Problem: A balanced relationship between the host and oral microbiota supports periodontal health and alveolar bone homeostasis. Antibiotic perturbation of the gut microbiota critically regulates the osteoimmune response at non-oral skeletal sites. However, the impact of antibiotics on the oral microbiota and osteoimmune mechanisms regulating alveolar bone homeostasis are unknown. Considering that periodontitis driven bone loss is caused by dysbiotic shifts in the oral microbiome, antibiotic disruption of the oral microbiota may have deleterious effects on alveolar bone homeostasis. Approach: Drinking water of sex-matched C57BL/6T specific-pathogen-free (SPF) mice was supplemented with minocycline (MINO) or vehicle (VEH) control treatment from age …
