Spectrum Of Imaging Findings In Aidsrelated Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma, Edward Nganga, Samuel Gitau
Spectrum Of Imaging Findings In Aidsrelated Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma, Edward Nganga, Samuel Gitau
Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa
Lymphoma in HIV-infected patients is AIDS defining. This is the second most common AIDS defining malignancy after Kaposi’s sarcoma. Development of lymphoma in HIV patients is related to immunosuppression and high viral load. Co-infection with other lymphotrophic viruses especially EBV is also strongly associated with development of lymphoma in HIV patients. Despite advances in HAART therapy, incidence of diffuse large B cell lymphoma in HIV-infected patients remains significantly higher than in the general population.
Early diagnosis is challenging due to presence of opportunistic infections and atypical presentation of the lymphoma in this subset of patients. Atypical imaging findings are not …

Intranasal Administration Of Pcrv Conjugated To A Tobacco Mosaic Virus Delivery Platform Protects Against P. Aeruginosa In A Murine Model Of Acute Pneumonia, Eman Barahim
NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a facultative anaerobic bacterium that is the most common type of Gram-negative bacteria causing nosocomial pneumonia in the United States. P. aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen ubiquitously found in the atmosphere that can colonize both plants and animals. It is known to cause a wide range of severe, persistent, and fatal infections ranging from acute and chronic pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections to urinary tract infections, especially in immune-compromised individuals. Patients with cystic fibrosis are at high risk because of deficiencies in mucosal immunity and phagocytosis. Ultimately, Pseudomonas infections can be lethal. There is a very …

When Does A Major Outbreak Become A Public Health Emergency Of International Concern?, David N. Durrheim, Lawrence O. Gostin, Keymanthri Moodley
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The process of determining whether a Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC) exists and should be declared has drawn increasing criticism over the past few years with allegations that it is more political than technical. Delaying declaration, where appropriate, means that the opportunity of garnering international solidarity and necessary resources in the early phases of epidemics, when public health measures may be more effective, is lost. A reform agenda aimed at enhancing WHO/Emergency Committee transparency and objectivity for the PHEIC declaration process is required.

Modulating Matrix Metalloproteases And Inflammation In Huntington’S Disease, Alejandro Lopez Ramirez
Modulating Matrix Metalloproteases And Inflammation In Huntington’S Disease, Alejandro Lopez Ramirez
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a rare and incurable autosomal neurodegenerative disease affecting 1-10 in every 100,000 people in the world. There is no cure for HD and treatments available alleviate certain symptoms for short periods of time. Evidence suggests that neuropathology of HD begins with the proteolysis of the mutated Huntingtin (mHTT) protein. A variety of proteases, like the matrix metalloproteases, cleave mHTT creating proteinaceous fragments that are thought to be neurotoxic. As these fragments increase in the brain, the damage to neurons also increases, leading to chronic inflammation due to hyper reactive microglia and astrocytes attempting to minimize and …

Engagement Of Primary Stakeholders To Tailor A Comprehensive Transitional Care Model For Persons Who Have Experienced A Stroke And Their Caregivers, Lorre Laws
Dissertations
Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the US, affecting approximately 795,000 persons annually. Stroke care is delivered across multiple settings from hyperacute care in a hospital through chronic stroke management in the community. Considerable advancements have been made in the delivery of hyperacute and acute stroke care. Science and practice gaps exist in providing stroke transitional care across multiple providers and settings once an individual is discharged from an in-patient care facility to home.
Using a qualitative descriptive design, this study engaged and elicited descriptions from stroke survivors and caregivers affected by stroke to inform the refinement and …

Lowering Antibiotic Resistance Utilizing Breastmilk, Moriah J. Harris
Honors College Theses
Antibiotic resistance is considered an emerging crisis in the healthcare world. This crisis has the potential to cause many bacterial diseases that cannot be cured using antibiotic drugs, which can lead to serious infections and death. There have been numerous studies that have found that sugars, proteins and protein-lipid complexes in breastmilk have antimicrobial properties. It has been proposed that these properties in breastmilk can help solve the antibacterial resistance crisis. This research project involved studying antibiotic resistance and how breastmilk can help solve this increasingly prevalent problem.
The implementation step of this research project involved a PowerPoint presentation detailing …

Prediction Of Drug-Drug Interaction Potential Using Machine Learning Approaches, Joseph Scavetta
Prediction Of Drug-Drug Interaction Potential Using Machine Learning Approaches, Joseph Scavetta
Theses and Dissertations
Drug discovery is a long, expensive, and complex, yet crucial process for the benefit of society. Selecting potential drug candidates requires an understanding of how well a compound will perform at its task, and more importantly, how safe the compound will act in patients. A key safety insight is understanding a molecule's potential for drug-drug interactions. The metabolism of many drugs is mediated by members of the cytochrome P450 superfamily, notably, the CYP3A4 enzyme. Inhibition of these enzymes can alter the bioavailability of other drugs, potentially increasing their levels to toxic amounts. Four models were developed to predict CYP3A4 inhibition: …

Role Of Neurotropism In Hiv-1 Gp120 Induced Oxidative Stress And Neurodegeneration, Lisa K. Smith
Chemistry and Biochemistry
An estimated 50% of individuals with long-term HIV infection are affected by the onset of progressive neurological and cognitive complications referred to as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). While the molecular mechanisms underlying pathology in HAND remain poorly understood, synaptodendritic damage has emerged as a hallmark of HIV infection of the CNS. This damage is likely mediated by a combination of indirect mechanisms involving the release of inflammatory mediators and viral proteins from infected glial cells, and direct effects mediated by the interaction of neurotoxic viral proteins with neuronal receptors. The neurotoxic HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120 interacts with neuronal receptors CCR5 …

Impact Of Childhood Vaccinations Suspended Due To Covid-19, Karina I. Figueroa
2020 Symposium Posters
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020, a public health issue has been created that has the potential to significantly affect our view on society. Among the variety of preventative tactics to slow the spread of infection, there has been a suspension of childhood vaccination across the globe including among developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that governments suspend preventive vaccination programs briefly during the pandemic as of March 26th (Ray, 2020). As a result of this, there has been an impact on children's health and an increase in mortality rates. The purpose of this research paper …

Phenotypic Analysis Of S. Aureus Strains From University Student Health Centers And Environmental Controls, Antonio Teixeira
Honors Theses
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a group of pathogenic bacterial strains resistant to a class of antibiotics that is a major cause for concern in health care systems. There is a lack of study in whether health care centers are reservoirs for these bacteria, especially within developed countries. Five environmental swab samples were collected from five different university health care centers across the region, and 16 swab samples from a general university environment. Any isolated bacterial strains collected underwent five biochemical tests (mannitol fermentation, DNase activity, oxidase activity, catalase activity, and coagulase activity) to preliminarily identify S. aureus bacteria. 24% …

Return To An Integrated Self: Using Dance/Movement Therapy With Survivors Of Juvenile Human Sex Trafficking, A Literature Review, Lauren Zampieri
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
As Juvenile Sex Trafficking (JST) has gained more attention over the past few decades, more attention has also been given to the treatment of the survivors. While there has been significant research regarding treatment of JST survivors and the subsequent symptoms that come with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) related to sexual trauma, little attention has been given to the re-integration process of survivors of JST. Reintegration will include an understanding of intrapersonal emotions, processing the dissociative subtype of PTSD, rebuilding trust of self and others, and re-forming interpersonal relationships post-trauma. Through practice, there have been promising results from the use …

Creating Attunement In Utero: Dance/Movement Therapy For Women Who Are Incarcerated While Pregnant, Meaghan Wilson
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis reviews the experience of pregnancy in prisons; pregnancy in bonding, attachment, and attunement; and pregnancy in dance movement therapy. Every woman deserves the help and guidance to connect with their baby as much as possible: during pregnancy and after. For women whom are incarcerated, the time to connect is shortened. For most women, they do not have access to their babies after delivery. I have researched the living conditions for women who are pregnant while incarcerated; this includes accommodations, possible health risks, and programs set up for pregnant women. Also researched is the importance to have connections made …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Introduction: HPV vaccination is both a clinically and cost-effective way to prevent HPV-related cancers. Increased focus on preventing HPV infection and HPV-related cancers has motivated development of strategies to increase adolescent vaccination rates. This analysis estimates the average cost associated with implementing programs aimed at increasing HPV vaccination from the perspective of the clinic decision makers. As providers and healthcare organizations consider vaccination initiatives, it is important for them to understand the costs associated with implementing these programs.
Methods: Healthcare provider assessment and feedback, reminders, and education; and parent education/reminder strategies were implemented in a large pediatric clinic network between …

Communication Strategies To Address Vaccine Hesitancy In Healthcare Settings And On Social Media, Lindy U. Mcgee Md, Jinny Suh Jd
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Abstract
Vaccine hesitancy is now recognized as a threat to global health. Its causes are complex, and it is defined by a resistance to or questioning of immunization. It is important to address vaccine hesitancy directly before people who are hesitant become vaccine refusers or anti-vaccine. Fortunately, with evidence-based information delivered with a compassionate communication style many of those who are hesitant to vaccinate can be persuaded to ultimately vaccinate. This paper aims to explain successful communication strategies used to address vaccine hesitancy in healthcare settings and on social media. Vaccine hesitant parents frequently list their child’s healthcare provider as …
