Chronic Rhinotillexomania Leading To Multiple Infectious Sequelae In A 66-Year-Old Female, Kunal Shah, Praveen Sankrithi, Sanket Shah, Mark A. Smith

Student Publications

Rhinotillexomania, more commonly known as nose-picking, is a body-focused repetitive behavior that involves compulsive picking of the nares. While nose-picking in general is a common and largely unharmful practice worldwide, severe complications from chronic nose-picking do exist. This case highlights a 66-year-old female with a longstanding history of nose-picking and nose blowing who presented to the emergency department with acute delirium and various bodily complaints. She was subsequently admitted multiple times for recurrent sepsis, meningitis, endocarditis, cystitis, and discitis with each culture positive for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) with identical antibiotic sensitivities. Further imaging failed to reveal an underlying greater …

Assessing Adverse Effects Of Mercury In Two Pinniped Species, Marianne Lian Aug 2020

Assessing Adverse Effects Of Mercury In Two Pinniped Species, Marianne Lian

Interdisciplinary Studies

This dissertation studies measures of adverse effects in free-ranging pinnipeds associated with relatively high total mercury ([THg]) or monomethylmercury ([MeHg+]) concentrations, relatively low total selenium ([TSe]) concentrations and/or low TSe:THg molar ratios. Both the Steller sea lion (SSL, Eumetopias jubatus) and Pacific harbor seal (HS, Phoca vitulina richardii) inhabit coasts of the North Pacific, and are considered important sentinel species for One Health (environmental, animal and human health). Relatively high [THg] is reported for some animals in both species, causing concern for adverse effects especially in the developing fetus. Maternal piscivorous diet can expose the fetus to MeHg⁺ at a …

Sea Urchin Ecology: Effects Of Food-Web Modification, Climate Change, And Community Structure, Benjamin P. Weitzman Aug 2020

Sea Urchin Ecology: Effects Of Food-Web Modification, Climate Change, And Community Structure, Benjamin P. Weitzman

Marine Biology

Ecosystem structure and function of temperate rocky reef habitats are subject to change as a result of food-web modification, climate change, and changes in biological community interactions. Sea urchins are a global driver of change in nearshore marine habitats though their ability to heavily graze marine vegetation and force rocky reef ecosystems from kelp forest to sea urchin barren ground states. The Aleutian Archipelago in southwest Alaska provided an ideal natural laboratory to study sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus spp.) ecology following the functional loss of the keystone predator, the sea otter (Enhydra lutris) during the 1990s. The objectives of this dissertation …

Repurposed Agents In The Alzheimer's Disease Drug Development Pipeline, Justin Bauzon, Garam Lee, Jeffrey Cummings

School of Medicine Faculty Research

Background: Treatments are needed to address the growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Clinical trials have failed to produce any AD drugs for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval since 2003, and the pharmaceutical development process is both time-consuming and costly. Drug repurposing provides an opportunity to accelerate this process by investigating the AD-related effects of agents approved for other indications. These drugs have known safety profiles, pharmacokinetic characterization, formulations, doses, and manufacturing processes. Methods: We assessed repurposed AD therapies represented in Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III of the current AD pipeline as registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as of …

Orchard, Christiane E. Wobus, Christopher A. Nelson, Daved H. Fremont, Megan T. Baldridge, Glenn Randall, Seungmin Hwang

Open Access Publications

Human norovirus is the leading cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, yet basic questions about its life cycle remain unanswered due to an historical lack of robust experimental systems. Recent studies on the closely related murine norovirus (MNV) have identified CD300LF as an indispensable entry factor for MNV. We compared the MNV susceptibilities of cells from different mouse strains and identified polymorphisms in murine CD300LF which are critical for its function as an MNV receptor. Bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) from I/LnJ mice were resistant to infection from multiple MNV strains which readily infect BMDMs from C57BL/6J mice. The resistance of I/LnJ BMDMs …

Measles, Movements And Medical Exemptions: How California Learned To Lead The Way, Joseph Bishop Aug 2020

Measles, Movements And Medical Exemptions: How California Learned To Lead The Way, Joseph Bishop

Madison Historical Review

In 2000, the United States celebrated the elimination of measles. Yet within twenty years, measles epidemics had sprung up throughout the country. This article examines the factors responsible for measles’ return to the United States and argues for a state policy that effectively reduces potential outbreaks. The growing anti-vaccination movement and vaccine misinformation largely account for the increase in vaccine hesitancy, leading to measles epidemics. California’s Senate Bill 277, a school-entry vaccination policy, demonstrates how withholding religious and philosophical exemptions increased vaccination rates in unprotected communities. By decreasing vaccine hesitancy with effective vaccine exemption policies, the United States can be …

Memantine Treatment Reduces The Incidence Of Flaccid Paralysis In A Zika Virus Mouse Model Of Temporary Paralysis With Similarities To Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Venkatraman Siddharthan, Hong Wang, Alexandre Lr De Oliveria, Xin Dai, John D. Morrey Aug 2020

Memantine Treatment Reduces The Incidence Of Flaccid Paralysis In A Zika Virus Mouse Model Of Temporary Paralysis With Similarities To Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Venkatraman Siddharthan, Hong Wang, Alexandre Lr De Oliveria, Xin Dai, John D. Morrey

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Clinical evidence suggests that Zika virus contributes to Guillain-Barré syndrome that causes temporary paralysis. We utilized a recently described Zika virus mouse model of temporary flaccid paralysis to address the hypothesis that treatment with an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, memantine, can reduce the incidence of paralysis. Aged interferon alpha/beta-receptor knockout mice were used because of their sublethal susceptibility to Zika virus infection. Fifteen to twenty-five percent of mice infected with a Puerto Rico strain of Zika virus develop acute flaccid paralysis beginning at days 8–9 and peaked at days 10–12. Mice recover from paralysis within a week of onset. In …

Predictors Of Social Distancing And Mask-Wearing Behavior: Panel Survey In Seven U.S. States, Plamen Nikolov, Andreas Pape, Ozlem Tonguc, Charlotte Williams

Economics Faculty Scholarship

This paper presents preliminary summary results from a longitudinal study of participants in seven U.S. states during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to standard socio-economic characteristics, we collect data on various economic preference parameters: time, risk, and social preferences, and risk perception biases. We pay special attention to predictors that are both important drivers of social distancing and are potentially malleable and susceptible to policy levers. We note three important findings: (1) demographic characteristics exert the largest influence on social distancing measures and mask-wearing, (2) we show that individual risk perception and cognitive biases exert a critical role in influencing …

T Lymphocyte Responses To Flaviviruses — Diverse Cell Populations Affect Tendency Toward Protection And Disease, Luis Alberto Sanchez Vargas, Anuja Mathew, Alan L. Rothman

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Dengue virus (DENV), Yellow Fever virus, West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus and Zika virus are medically important flaviviruses transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and circulate in overlapping geographic areas. Cross-reactive immune responses have been demonstrated among the flaviviruses, particularly the four DENV serotypes. The immunological imprint left by a flavivirus infection can therefore have profound effects on the responses to subsequent infections. In this review we summarize recent research focusing on T cell responses to DENV using clinical samples from prospective cohort studies in Asia. These data suggest that durability of different T cell populations after …

SARS-CoV-2, a novel coronavirus reached pandemic status by the World Health Organization in the spring of 2020. As a novel virus, analysis of the early literature on the clinical manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 is imperative to help guide clinical practice and inform future research. Early studies about the clinical manifestation of the virus showed a proportion of hospitalized patients developing renal abnormalities and AKI. This paper analyzed literature through searching the PubMed database to assess whether renal abnormalities and AKI were present in hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 patients, how the renal abnormalities manifested themselves in patients, and the associated treatment and prognosis of …

The Great Flood: An Exploration Of Fluid Resuscitation In Sepsis, Adam Olsson Aug 2020

The Great Flood: An Exploration Of Fluid Resuscitation In Sepsis, Adam Olsson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Sepsis and septic shock continue to be major causes of in-hospital mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared sepsis as a global health top priority as of 2017. To combat sepsis mortality, the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) released the first set of guidelines in 2004 and continues to publish treatment guidelines, updating the guidelines every four years based on emerging evidence. The 2018 update to the 2016 guidelines contains an Hour-1 Bundle released by the SSC, which includes a rapid infusion of a 30 ml/kg fluid bolus as a strong recommendation with low quality evidence. Recently, studies have challenged this …

A Mechanistic And Genomic Analysis Of Molluscum Contagiosum Virus Immune Evasion, Ian Benjamin Harvey Aug 2020

A Mechanistic And Genomic Analysis Of Molluscum Contagiosum Virus Immune Evasion, Ian Benjamin Harvey

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) is a common human-specific poxvirus with a proclivity forinfecting children and the immune-compromised. A characteristic MCV infection is restricted tothe epidermal layers of the skin and can persist for weeks to years in an otherwise healthyindividual. The high clinical burden of MCV is at odds with our limited knowledge regarding howit successfully evades the human immune response, which is in part due to the lack of an animalmodel or cell line to propagate the virus. Through this dissertation, we have uncovered andcharacterized a novel mechanism by which MC80, a protein encoded by MCV, downregulateshost MHC-I surface …

Genomic Analysis Of Diverse Bacterial Pathogens, Robert Potter Aug 2020

Genomic Analysis Of Diverse Bacterial Pathogens, Robert Potter

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Bacterial pathogens have been a historical scourge for the entirety of human existence but have been significantly thwarted since the 20th century due to the development of antibiotics. However, owing to the large selection pressure of antibiotics on bacterial populations, phenotypic antibiotic resistance from the development of vertically transmitted mutations and horizontally acquired antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is increasing. The sum has produced multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs) which have extremely limited treatment options. Epidemiological studies have determined that carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), Acinetobacter baumannii, and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE) are some of the most problematic MDRO infections. The advent of …
