Cathedrals Of The Mind: Theological Method And Speculative Renewal In Trinitarian Theology, Ryan Hemmer Oct 2020

Cathedrals Of The Mind: Theological Method And Speculative Renewal In Trinitarian Theology, Ryan Hemmer

Dissertations (1934 -)

The aim of this work is twofold. First, it labors to retrieve from the past a normative account of speculative theological method, in protest of the anti-speculative fashions and attitudes that have prevailed among theologians since the Second Vatican Council. Second, and in tension with the first aim, this study outlines the respects in which conciliar and post-conciliar developments in history, anthropology, philosophy, and cultural analysis—the same developments that led to speculative theology’s fall from favor—are the means by which speculative theology might be renewed and made useful in theology today. The second chapter squares up to speculative theology’s critics …

Evidence For Physiological Niche Expansion Of An Intertidal Flatworm: Evolutionary Rescue In The Wild, Katharine A. Clayton, John I. Spicer Oct 2020

Evidence For Physiological Niche Expansion Of An Intertidal Flatworm: Evolutionary Rescue In The Wild, Katharine A. Clayton, John I. Spicer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Microevolution may enable populations to adapt physiologically to rapid climate change. Where it exists, historical data could provide a rare opportunity to document such adaptation. The intertidal flatworm Procerodes littoralis experiences large changes in salinity throughout the tidal cycle. We investigated whether regeneration performance of P. littoralis has changed over the last century. We repeated identical experiments to those published in 1914 on the same species and from the same location. In the modern experiment, when tested across a range of different salinities (S = 3, 6, 28, 44 and 53), P. littoralis could regenerate at lower salinities (S = …

The Study Of The Merits Of Historical Figures, Maqsuda Nishonovna Khusanova

Bulletin of Gulistan State University

The article notes that dignitaries are an important element of spiritual heritage, national cultural wealth and a complex of ancient historical monuments. The active use of the period and the historical study of the names given to historical figures, the names analyzed today. It is well known that dignitonyms, like other onomastic units, consist of words. The words that they contain are onomastic lexicons based on the names of things, events, and so on. The fact that such words are studied both synchronously and diachronously suggests that the richness of our language is enormous: as soon as onomastic units are …

Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown Sep 2020

Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown

History Faculty Research

Andrew Dickson White is not considered a canonical author in the French Revolution's historiography, but rather is known as the founding president of both Cornell University and the American Historical Association (AHA). His best-known published historical writings, when referenced at all, are often derided. Yet in his intellectually formative years, as an earnest abolitionist and amibtious Republican, eager to enter the arena of American political life and anticipating what he would later call "the great revolution" of the Civil War, White made the topic his central academic pursuit - and effectively invented a distinctly American tradition of historiography.

Strangers, The Tool Of The Gods On Earth (A Historical Study In The Light Of The Cuneiform Texts Of The Mesopotamian Civilization) (3200-612 Bc), Waqayd Badr Mahdii

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Cuneiform texts reveal to us various images and attitudes about strangers in Mesopotamia civilization. The research aims to shed light on the position of Mesopotamia civilization community on those strangers, whether outside the borders, or within the borders, when when the gutans are described as enemies, we are about how they became enemies? And why? In addition, has the Rafidai community divided strangers on its land based on ethnic, biophysical, or cultural, civilizational grounds? In an attempt to answer all these questions, this research entitled (Strangers the Goddess Tool on Earth) was a historical study in the light of the …

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Compared to other cities, the construction of informal settlements in the city of Beirut is caused by a range of interrelated factors including population growth, ruralurban migration and political intrigues. These settlements follow a reverse development process where people occupy the land, then build on it, install infrastructures, and finally, acquire ownership. The aim of this study is to identify the adopted procurement methods in the construction process of informal settlements in Beirut through the different construction phases of these settlements. The methodology used in this study is based on a qualitative analysis of the informal housing in Beirut as …

Some Corner Forever: The Imperial War Graves Commission And The Meaning Of The Great War, Cameron T. Sauers Sep 2020

Some Corner Forever: The Imperial War Graves Commission And The Meaning Of The Great War, Cameron T. Sauers

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

This paper argues that sites administered by the Imperial War Graves Commission played a significant part in the British public’s mourning and understanding of the meaning of the Great War. Pilgrimages, due to their popularity, size, and accessibility, allowed the countless bereaved families to grieve the losses that they suffered during the war. Their visits to cemeteries were powerful experiences because of the painstaking work done by the IWGC to bury identified bodies, honor unidentified remains, and enshrined names for those whose remains could not be identified. The IWGC was a bureaucratic organization that overcame the cultural challenge posed by …

Cooperation In The International System: An Interdisciplinary Investigation At The Intersection Of International Relations And International Law, Kalyani Unkule

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

A conversation between the disciplines of International Relations and International Law illuminates the nature of interstate cooperation and enhances our understanding of the nature and potential of international law. There are methodological and practical asymmetries between International Relations and International Law which create ideal conditions for interdisciplinary work. Studying international cooperation on protecting cultural heritage enable us to address the above questions and reevaluate and extend underlying theoretical frameworks.

Excitons In Self-Assembled Hybrid Systems Of Molecular Aggregate Light-Harvesting Nanotubes: Charge-Transfer Substrates And Solution-Stabilized Nanocomposites, Kara Ng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Delocalized Frenkel excitons-coherently-shared excitations among chromophores-are responsible for the remarkable effciency of supramolecular light-harvesting aggregates within photosynthetic organisms. Despite tremendous progress towards a deeper understanding of these photosynthetic complexes, as well as progress in the development of organic solar cells, the possibility of using bio-inspired molecular nanostructures for large-scale solar energy conversion has not been realized yet. The persistent limitations in translating natures design principles for applications in optoelectronic devices have been the supramolecular structures fragility, and the Frenkel excitons delicate nature. The structural instability, both dis-assembly and spontaneous re-assembly of aggregates. Analysis of the absorption spectrum of a model …

Dynamics Of Youth Engagement In The Local Church, Jacqueline C. Hanna Sep 2020

Dynamics Of Youth Engagement In The Local Church, Jacqueline C. Hanna

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

According to many biblical accounts, children were included in worship experiences. Despite the efforts of many churches to engage, attract, and retain youth, there is still a lack of youth participation, involvement, and interest in the local church. This not only affects youth, but also the church. Unengaged youth do not have the opportunity to become future leaders of the church. In turn, churches will experience a void in future leadership and will be prohibited from flourishing. This qualitative historical study examined reasons for youth disengagement in an effort to find strategies for effective retention and engagement to benefit youth …

Chronic Strain, Gendered Coping, And Health Outcomes In A Rural Context, Deirdre Ann Laselva Sep 2020

Chronic Strain, Gendered Coping, And Health Outcomes In A Rural Context, Deirdre Ann Laselva

Master's Theses and Capstones

Although there is a considerable body of literature examining mental and physical health outcomes among adolescents and adults, there is less research that focuses on emerging adulthood and how emerging adults - especially within a rural context – experience mental and physical health. Furthermore, less is known regarding how or if gender impacts the relationships between coping style and outcomes among this population. Studies historically show that women report higher rates of anxiety, depressed mood, and chronically debilitating physical illnesses than men. The differences in rates of disorders between men and women is often explained by citing traditional gender roles; …

Great Lakes Snake: Estimating The Occupancy And Detection Probabilities Of The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus Catenatus), Arin June Thacker

Masters Theses

Detailed knowledge of a species’ range and distribution is important for understanding species persistence and developing species management plans. This issue is particularly pronounced in threatened species with wide-spread range and a low detectability in their natural environment, as surveying and successfully encountering this type of species is oftentimes difficult. One such species is the eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus), a smallbodied pit viper with a distribution centered around the Great Lakes region. We used singleseason occupancy modeling in order to reassess the status of historic massasauga occurrences. We evaluated factors affecting eastern massasauga detection probability from a …

Experiencing God: Engaging Elementary-Aged Children In Corporate Worship, Laura Rushing Hancock Sep 2020

Experiencing God: Engaging Elementary-Aged Children In Corporate Worship, Laura Rushing Hancock

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The engagement of children in meaningful worship has been neglected, despite the investment of modern churches in essential safety protocols and digital media in children’s ministry. The twenty-first-century consumerist mindset is driving worship design, essentially undermining the worship leader’s role as the shepherd of a child-centered and Christ-focused approach. Many churches are neglecting the biblical instruction to cast vision and express value for children’s corporate worship. A sense of awe and wonder is notably absent in many corporate services designed for children. Drawing upon biblical principles, educational theory, and corporate worship practices throughout history, this qualitative historical study seeks to …

The Rise Of Corporate Individualism In Twenty-First Century Worship, Russell Allen Robbins Sep 2020

The Rise Of Corporate Individualism In Twenty-First Century Worship, Russell Allen Robbins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Western society has experienced a monumental paradigm shift which has influenced the way in which the church worships in the twenty-first century. Postmodernism has led to an increasingly self-focused individualism in corporate worship which overvalues personal experience and undervalues the communal aspect of corporate worship. Despite much discussion concerning postmodern generations, the influence of postmodern thought upon the rise of corporate individualism in worship has yet to be examined. The purpose of this qualitative, historical study is to examine the factors that have led to the rise of corporate individualism in worship, the indications of corporate individualism in worship, and …

This study examines the perceived credibility of professional photojournalism in context to the usage of User-Generated Content (UGC) when compared across digital news and social media platforms, by individual news consumers in the United States employing a Q methodology experiment. The literature review studies source credibility as the theoretical framework through which to begin; however, using an inductive design, the data may indicate additional patterns and themes. Credibility as a news concept has been studied in terms of print media, broadcast and cable television, social media, and inline news, both individually and between genres. Very few studies involve audience perceptions …
