Playing On The Map: An Educational Game From The Age Of Revolutions, Emily C. Bruce, Elise Klarenbeek
Playing On The Map: An Educational Game From The Age Of Revolutions, Emily C. Bruce, Elise Klarenbeek
History Publications
This object lesson explores a German geography board game produced during the years around 1800, The Journey from Prague to Vienna. Its spatial orientation, colorful narration, and gameplay help us understand how middle-class German-speaking children were situated socially and politically on a map. Within a world rife with territorial instability and emerging nationalisms, this object taught bourgeois youth that they shared in an imagined German cultural identity. In this way, The Journey from Prague to Vienna links the history of play with the politicization of children’s education.

An Evaluation Of The Advance Directives-Live Action Simulation Training (Ad-Last) Program, Alexandra Rosa Spinelli
Theses and Dissertations
Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a process that captures a patient’s wishes in the case of future circumstances in which they are unable to express them. Studies show that less than one third of the general population has completed some type of formal Advance Directive (AD). There are barriers to completing ADs, and these barriers operate on multiple levels, including, patient, provider and institutional. To improve providers’ capacity to help patients complete ACP, and overcome these barriers, a provider-focused intervention was conducted. The current study is an analysis of archival data collected from the Advance Directives-Live Action Simulation Training (AD-LAST) …

The Loss Of Baptist Identity: How The Loss Of The Baptist Name Impacts Theological Identity, Josiah O. Hoagland
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the United States, many Baptist churches have been following a recent trend of dropping “Baptist” from the church title. Research has shown that with the rise of post-denominationalism, there is a loss of identity in Baptist churches. This study explores the effects of dropping the name Baptist from a church’s title and its perceived impact on the theological identity of the church. This study includes a literature review analyzing the current body of literature on Baptist identity. Six Converge North Central Baptist churches were studied, three with a Baptist name and three without, using church surveys and interviews with …

Notes On Mormonism And The Trinity, Daniel C. Peterson
Notes On Mormonism And The Trinity, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
With “awe, humility, and circumspection,” Daniel C. Peterson provides a useful summary and discussion of Latter-day Saint beliefs as they relate to traditional Christian conceptions of the Trinity. In particular, his discussions reveals the many nuances of the questions raised, including the precise nature of the unity of the three persons of the Godhead and how the overall conception relates to doctrines of salvation and practical discipleship, which continued to be a controversial issue in both the Eastern and Western Churches for centuries. Peterson argues that the Latter-day Saint doctrine affirms both biblical precedents and, to a degree, some modern …

“A Prophet Like Moses” (Deuteronomy 18:15–18) In The Book Of Mormon, The Bible, And The Dead Sea Scrolls, David R. Seely
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
David Seely provides a wide-ranging survey of interpretations of the prophecy in Deuteronomy 18:15–18 concerning “a prophet like unto Moses.” He examines relevant passages in the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and the Dead Sea Scrolls and shows how the prophecy has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ and others, continuing with Joseph Smith’s role in the Restoration and onward to the present day.
The Visions Of Moses And Joseph Smith’S Bible Translation, Kent P. Jackson
The Visions Of Moses And Joseph Smith’S Bible Translation, Kent P. Jackson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This contribution focuses on the earliest and one of the most significant chapters of the Book of Moses: Moses 1, sometimes called the “Visions of Moses.” Kent Jackson summarizes the sources available relating to the production of this chapter, illuminating obscure corners of its often misunderstood background with his extensive knowledge of the history, manuscripts, and significance of the Joseph Smith Translation.
A Priesthood Restoration Narrative For Latter-Day Saints Believers, Brian C. Hales
A Priesthood Restoration Narrative For Latter-Day Saints Believers, Brian C. Hales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
With ready access to all the documents acquired by the Joseph Smith Papers project, Michael Hubbard MacKay, co-editor of the Joseph Smith Papers’ Documents, Volume 1: July 1828–June 1831, presents a new historical reconstruction of the priesthood restoration in Prophetic Authority: Democratic Hierarchy and the Mormon Priesthood. MacKay summarizes how Joseph Smith’s initial authority was based primarily on charisma drawn from the Book of Mormon translation and his revelations. The transition next to apostolic authority — derived from priesthood keys restored by Peter, James and John — is also detailed. MacKay contextualizes the priesthood as part of Smith’s efforts to …
Lothar-Günther Buchheim’S Das Boot: Memory And The Nazi Past, Dean Jon Guarnaschelli
Lothar-Günther Buchheim’S Das Boot: Memory And The Nazi Past, Dean Jon Guarnaschelli
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the relationship between German author Lothar-Günther Buchheim (1918-2007), his bestselling 1973 novel Das Boot (The Boat), and the Federal Republic of Germany’s endeavor to come to terms with the spiritual damage left behind by National Socialism as well as with the responsibility of Germans for that past, known as the Vergangenheitsbewältigung. Buchheim was a reporter for the German Navy during the Battle of the Atlantic who benefitted from distinct privileges, yet he was never in a position of power during the conflict. He fulfilled his duties for the propaganda division with accolades, but thirty years later Buchheim …
Understanding Sovereignty And The Us Constitution: A View From The Massachusetts Ratifying Convention, Hannah Novotny
Understanding Sovereignty And The Us Constitution: A View From The Massachusetts Ratifying Convention, Hannah Novotny
Undergraduate Review
Eighteenth-century American politics does more than simply provide us with the U.S. Constitution. According to Gordon Wood (1991, 32), the stakes of eighteenth-century historical arguments are very high, as they deal with “nothing less than the kind of society we have been, or ought to become.” Barry Shain (1994, xiv) concurs with Wood, arguing that an understanding of the American founding “defines how Americans understand themselves as a historical people, as well as constraining what they might become.” As Wood and Shain indicate, an understanding of eighteenth-century American political thought shapes how we understand our past and informs the decisions …

School-Based Agricultural Education Students’ Attitudes And Beliefs Toward International Agricultural Concepts, Seth B. Heinert, Nathan W. Conner, T. Grady Roberts
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and beliefs of school-based agriculture education (SBAE) students toward international agricultural concepts. This study builds on several previous studies (Conner, Greer, & Stripling, 2017; Elliot & Yanik, 2002; Heinert, Lavery, & Roberts, 2014; Radhakrishna, Leite, & Domer, 2003). To explore new geographic regions of the United States, two states, one from the Midwest and one from the Northwest, were purposively identified. A 46-item instrument that measures attitudes, beliefs, understanding, and instruction in relation to international agriculture developed by Radhakrishna et al. (2003) was administered to students in three schools representing …
A Numerical Approach To Modeling Submoons And Investigating Stability Regions, Josephine Spiegelberg
A Numerical Approach To Modeling Submoons And Investigating Stability Regions, Josephine Spiegelberg
Honors Program Theses
The recent discovery of the Neptune-sized exomoon candidate Kepler-1625bi (Teachey et al. 2018) has prompted a wave of research into the possibility of such a large satellite hosting its own moons, or submoons. These submoons have a lot in common with moons, and lessons from moon stability calculations can help to understand submoon behavior and stability. Past submoon research has focused on determining stability regions for these submoons using simplified models of the body’s tidal evolution (Reid 1973, Conrad 1985, Kollmeier and Raymond 2019). In order to provide a more detailed understanding of submoon behavior, a Fortran N-Body code was …

The Joseph Smith Papers And The Book Of Abraham: A Response To Recent Reviews, Matthew J. Grow, Matthew C. Godfrey
The Joseph Smith Papers And The Book Of Abraham: A Response To Recent Reviews, Matthew J. Grow, Matthew C. Godfrey
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Joseph Smith Papers welcomes engagement with its work and gratefully acknowledges the important work of various scholars on the Book of Abraham. Recent reviews in the Interpreter of Revelations and Translations, Volume 4, however, significantly misunderstand the purposes and conventions of the project. This response corrects some of those misconceptions, including the idea that the transcript is riddled with errors and the idea that personal agendas drive the analysis in the volume. The complex history of the Book of Abraham can be understood through multiple faithful perspectives, and the Joseph Smith Papers Project affirms the value of robust, respectful, …
The Role And Purpose Of Synagogues In The Days Of Jesus And Paul, Taylor Halverson
The Role And Purpose Of Synagogues In The Days Of Jesus And Paul, Taylor Halverson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This article explores why Jesus so often healed in synagogues. By comparing the uses and purposes of Diaspora and Palestinian synagogues, this article argues that synagogues functioned as a hostel or community center of sorts in ancient Jewish society. That is, those needing healing would seek out such services and resources at the synagogue.
Death To Seducers! Examples Of Latter-Day Saint-Led Extralegal Justice In Historical Context, Craig L. Foster
Death To Seducers! Examples Of Latter-Day Saint-Led Extralegal Justice In Historical Context, Craig L. Foster
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Some people have suggested a strain of violence within nineteenth- century Latter-day Saint culture as violent as and perhaps more so than that of most Americans around them. Critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints point to a few well-known acts of extralegal violence as evidence of a culture of violence that permeated the early Church. But were these examples of violence really out of the norm of nineteenth-century American society? This article looks at examples of extralegal punishment for certain crimes, placing them and the examples of extralegal punishment in Utah within a greater historical and …
The Memory Of Single Motherhood In Contemporary Literature, Shelby Hennessy
The Memory Of Single Motherhood In Contemporary Literature, Shelby Hennessy
Theses & ETDs
The overarching question in this thesis, How are single mothers remembered collectively in contemporary literature? joins two fields of academia, Literature and Memory Studies. The single mothersIdiscussmaybeunwed, divorced, orwidowed. My introduction analyzes the social prejudices directed against single mothers and draws on sociological and historical studies as initial evidence. Within the three chapters and the conclusion, I discuss eight literary examples of single mothers, from books published between 1976 and 2009, and accompany them with relevant memory theories by such scholars as Michael Rothberg and Marianne Hirsch. Each chapter examines one ofthree life stages, and asks: What is pregnancy as a single mother …

The Emergence Of Modernity In The Early Aerospace Industry 1950-1970, Lachlan Warwick Sands
The Emergence Of Modernity In The Early Aerospace Industry 1950-1970, Lachlan Warwick Sands
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The literature regarding the management of science during the early aerospace industry between 1950 and 1970, and more specifically the period of Lockheed’s transition from aeronautics into aerospace, is sparse and the subject is insufficiently studied. In this dissertation I examine how the practice of science changed in the United States in the decades after World War II. The scientific endeavor in the United States manifested a transformation from an enlightenment-based set of norms to a new modern ethos. For all intents and purposes, the traditional intellectual boundaries between basic science, applied science, and technology dissolved across the majority of …
Shakespeare’S Cosmology On The Supernatural: All Is Illusion, Yiju Liao
Shakespeare’S Cosmology On The Supernatural: All Is Illusion, Yiju Liao
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines how Shakespeare approached elements of the supernatural – ghosts, madness, and witchcraft – in his plays. The aftermath of the England’s break from the Catholic Church led to societal upheaval in the way early modern England viewed the supernatural. Prior to this break, Europeans interpreted the supernatural through the religious explanations provided by the Church. However, the Reformation opened the gates for scholars, physicians, and theologists to offer up non-religious explanations for supernatural phenomena. In England in particular, tropes and fears towards the supernatural were colored by the foreign threats against Queen Elizabeth I by the Catholic …

Every December, the world turns its eyes to Norway for the presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize, recognized as the “world’s most important, visible and prestigious prize,” according to Fredrik S. Heffermehl (xi). Since its inauguration in 1901, a pantheon of impressive individuals and organizations has assumed the title of Nobel Peace Laureate. Yet Alfred Nobel harbored a concern as he established the prize in his will: he wanted the prize to be a new beginning for its recipients, not an end to their stories. Nobel wrote, “I wish to help the dreamers, as they find it difficult to get …
Immigration And Violent Crime: Triangulating Findings Across Diverse Studies, Michael T. Light, Isabel Anadon
Immigration And Violent Crime: Triangulating Findings Across Diverse Studies, Michael T. Light, Isabel Anadon
Marquette Law Review
The dramatic increase in both lawful and unauthorized immigration in recent decades produced a groundswell of research on two questions: (1) Does immigration increase violent crime? and (2) What policy responses are most effective at addressing unauthorized immigration (e.g., sanctuary policies, deportations, etc.)? For the most part, these bodies of work have developed independently, and thus we know little as to whether the insights from one inform the other. This Article fills this gap by first reviewing both areas of research and then triangulating shared findings between them. In doing so, we focus on three contemporary immigration policies: (1) increased …
