Potentials For Creative Urban Development At Kom El-Dekka- Alexandria, Dina Nassar, Riham Ragheb
Potentials For Creative Urban Development At Kom El-Dekka- Alexandria, Dina Nassar, Riham Ragheb
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Can Alexandria lead a future as its bright past? To raise this question, it is important to understand its past and present. Alexandria is a Mediterranean city and the second largest city in Egypt after Cairo. It was home to the Ancient Pharos Lighthouse and Library of Alexandria. Alexandria was once, not only the center of its region, but of the entire world. Now, merely any physical evidence of this history exists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Alexandria became known as a cosmopolitan center of Mediterranean culture, economy and trade. These unique layers of cultural identity are …
The Dutch Effect: Kuyper And Neo-Calvinism In Professor Cochran's Scholarship, David S. Caudill
The Dutch Effect: Kuyper And Neo-Calvinism In Professor Cochran's Scholarship, David S. Caudill
Pepperdine Law Review
One of the obvious influences on Bob Cochran’s scholarship is the Dutch Calvinist tradition, especially as represented in the writings by or about Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920). Even though Cochran was neither Dutch nor a member of a Reformed church, Cochran found inspiration and compelling insights (with respect to legal processes and institutions) in the Dutch Calvinist tradition. This interest reflected Cochran’s generous ecumenism and his well-known respect for religious diversity. Three prominent conceptions—the trilogy of sphere sovereignty, antithesis, and common grace—provide a guide to Cochran’s recourse to Kuyper and Calvinism in his scholarly writing. Following a brief explanation of the …

Institution Of Zakat In Colonial Malaysia, Avazbek Ganiyev
Institution Of Zakat In Colonial Malaysia, Avazbek Ganiyev
The Light of Islam
Zakat is one of the five Pillars of Islam and it is stated that one of the main principles in Islamic finance. Its aim is to balance wealth distribution fairly among all state members, and it has deep meaning for not only the one who is eligible to receive but also the one who is eligible to perform it. Zakat is often interpreted as the almsgivings to the poor and the needy and as from the zakat payers’ perspective; it is the purification of their soul through helping needy and a way of restraining one from greed. Using library-based research, …
Yummy Advertising? A Look At The Sexualization Of Food Advertisements, Mackenzie Cook
Yummy Advertising? A Look At The Sexualization Of Food Advertisements, Mackenzie Cook
Scholars Week
This content analysis was to further research in looking how sexuality is used in advertising, but particularly food advertisements. More specifically, words and phrases used, advertising characters, how they are presented and posed, etc. Using a combination of 15 Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s ads, these were analyzed to find consistent themes for advertising tactics. Findings show that sexual innuendos in advertisement phrasing are often used, as well as female characters. It also showed that these characters were often scantily clad or close to nude, making them have more “sex appeal” for the male audience. Facial expressions and posing were also …
Divining Gospel. Oracles Of Interpretation In A Syriac Manuscript Of John, Jeff Childers
Divining Gospel. Oracles Of Interpretation In A Syriac Manuscript Of John, Jeff Childers
Graduate School of Theology
Ancient manuscripts of John’s Gospel containing hermeneiai have long puzzled scholars, provoking debate about their origins, purpose, and use. The fragmentary nature of the early evidence has impeded progress towards a better understanding of these specialized books. The present study shows that these books are "Divining Gospels"—editions of John’s Gospel incorporating lot divination materials for use in fortune-telling. The study centers on material presented here for the first time: the text and translation of a unique sixth-century Syriac manuscript, the earliest and most complete example of a hermeneia Gospel. An analysis of the Syriac along with evidence from Greek, Coptic, …
“Women Thus Educated”: Transnational Influences On Women’S Arguments For Female Education In Seventeenth-Century England, Miranda Jessop
“Women Thus Educated”: Transnational Influences On Women’S Arguments For Female Education In Seventeenth-Century England, Miranda Jessop
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the intellectual history of proto-feminist thought in early modern England and seeks to better understand the transnational elements of and influences on proto-feminist theorists’ arguments in favor of women’s education in the late seventeenth century. A close reading of Bathsua Makin and Anna Maria Van Schurman’s essays in relation to one another, and within their social and historical context, reveals the importance of ideas of religion and social order, especially class, in understanding and justifying women’s education. The metaphysical foundation of Makin’s arguments in favor of women’s education is that the true nature of women, including their …
Metafiction As Anti-Genre Across Narrative Mediums, Jesse Matlock
Metafiction As Anti-Genre Across Narrative Mediums, Jesse Matlock
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the various functions of self-conscious and self-reflexive narrative such as authorial control over meaning, mutability of history, and ontological exploration/experimentation such as the relationship between fiction and reality. It examines texts from multiple narrative genres and media (novels, comic books/graphic novels, film, and theater) as well as established critical work on metafiction, such as Patricia Waugh’s Metafiction: The Theory and Practice of Self-Conscious Fiction, Robert Alter’s Partial Magic: The Novel as a Self-Conscious Genre, and Linda Hutcheon’s “Historiographic Metafiction” to establish the prototypical characteristics of metafiction. It also discusses the specific ways in which these metafictional practices …
The Effects Of Feudalism On Medieval English Mobility: A Biological Distance Study Using Nonmetric Cranial Traits., Jonathan H. Barkmeier
The Effects Of Feudalism On Medieval English Mobility: A Biological Distance Study Using Nonmetric Cranial Traits., Jonathan H. Barkmeier
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Social and environmental factors play a key role in determining biocultural phenomena that can be observed on skeletal populations. Genetic markers in the form of nonmetric traits can help understand underlying questions about population movement and subsequent gene flow. During the medieval period in England, feudalism may have limited migration and created sedentary lifestyles for the peasant class who lived and worked on land owned by the nobility. By using a biological distance model, questions about the interactions between rural and urban populations, as well as the restrictive economic system that was in place during the Middle Ages, can be …

School-Based Agricultural Education Students’ Attitudes And Beliefs Toward International Agricultural Concepts, Seth B. Heinert, Nathan W. Conner, T. Grady Roberts
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and beliefs of school-based agriculture education (SBAE) students toward international agricultural concepts. This study builds on several previous studies (Conner, Greer, & Stripling, 2017; Elliot & Yanik, 2002; Heinert, Lavery, & Roberts, 2014; Radhakrishna, Leite, & Domer, 2003). To explore new geographic regions of the United States, two states, one from the Midwest and one from the Northwest, were purposively identified. A 46-item instrument that measures attitudes, beliefs, understanding, and instruction in relation to international agriculture developed by Radhakrishna et al. (2003) was administered to students in three schools representing …

Park Blues Langston Hughes, Racial Exclusion, And The Park Ballad, Margaret Konkol
Park Blues Langston Hughes, Racial Exclusion, And The Park Ballad, Margaret Konkol
English Faculty Publications
This chapter draws attention to the lack of parks and nature recreation amenities during the 1920s and 1930s in predominantly African American city neighborhoods through Langston Hughes’s political poetry, specifically his blues-inflected ballad “Park Bench,” as well as “Chicago’s Black Belt” “Restrictive Covenants,” and “One Way Ticket.” Through the figure of the tramp/vagrant/bum, “Park Bench” voices a protest against inequality mapped into city space. Asserting that access to nature should be a fundamental condition of a democratic society, the poem situates the park bench as a charged site for public dialogue. The chapter argues that this poem and other Hughes …

The Iscsc Celebrates The 130th Birth Anniversary Of Pitirim A. Sorokin, The Founding President, With A Contemporary View Of His Legacy, Andrew S. Targowski
Comparative Civilizations Review
This study analyzes the legacy of Pitirim Sorokin, founding President of the ISCSC, in terms of his methodology, the scope of his works, and his acceptance by his American peers. He was perceived as a prophet rather than a scientist. Furthermore, he was a hidden anti-Leninist who lived through and was obsessed with crises, and, being spiritually cultivated, he perceived altruism, the Absolute, God, love, duty, sacrifice, grace, and justice as the only solutions that can reconstruct and save humanity. His theory of social and cultural dynamics is like Marx’s socioeconomics; however, it was reconfigured to sound different, since he …

Protecting The Role Of The Press During Times Of Crisis, Mary-Rose Papandrea
Protecting The Role Of The Press During Times Of Crisis, Mary-Rose Papandrea
William & Mary Law Review
President Trump’s daily tweets attacking the media have led many observers to express concern about the state of the press in our nation. Trump has called the press “the ... enemy of the [American] people,” encouraged a climate of hatred toward journalists at his rallies, refused to condemn Saudi Arabia for the brutal killing of reporter Jamal Khashoggi, and accused the media of writing “fake news.” The public’s trust in the institutional press has simultaneously diminished. Combined with the continuing economic challenges journalists face, the press is certainly facing some difficult times.
Nevertheless, things are not as dire as they …
A Need For Richer Public Service Motivation, Adam Dallas Levitus
A Need For Richer Public Service Motivation, Adam Dallas Levitus
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
While there are many outstanding questions surrounding the motivations of employees, a key problem is that there is not a defining construct to explain why public employees behave as they do. Although the concept of Public Service Motivation (PSM) has developed over the past three decades to help explain these motivations, there are still disagreements as to the definition, characteristics, and value of PSM. Moreover, this lack of congruity in the literature suggests that the underlying components of PSM, historically studied via cross-sectional quantitative surveys, have not yet been well-defined via rigorous theory-building. Accordingly, this study looks at PSM from …

An Exploration Of The Alignment Of Actual And Desired Roles For School Psychologists, Tessa Petereit
Student Work
This mixed data exploratory study examined the actual and desired job responsibilities of school psychologists, the Professional Quality of Life survey, school psychologist to student ratio, and years in the profession. Qualitative data regarding reasons they entered the field, barriers to practicing in their desired role, and roles they felt to be most effective was gathered. The aim of this study was to shed light on the extent to which the alignment of their desired roles influences the perceived effectiveness of the school psychologists. Most school psychologists entered the field to support children; all but one of the school psychologists surveyed …
Custodians Of Memory: A History Of American Archival Science With Suggestions For Future Digital Preservation Efforts, Courtney Thompson
Custodians Of Memory: A History Of American Archival Science With Suggestions For Future Digital Preservation Efforts, Courtney Thompson
Master's Theses
The archive and the historian are symbiotically dependent on one another. The archive relies on the historian to make use of the records it houses, and the historian looks to the archive to reconstruct history. But can a historian responsibly reconstruct history when the archive is fraught with relativity and bias? This thesis serves two purposes; one, pulling from seminal archival science and collections management texts, it chronicles the monumental, intellectual changes to American archival sciences, theories, and institutions, and two, it shows how these early conversations pertaining to archival theories are both not far removed from digital preservation efforts …
Religious Conversions And Religious Diversification In Interwar Yugoslavia And Slovenia, Gašper Mithans
Religious Conversions And Religious Diversification In Interwar Yugoslavia And Slovenia, Gašper Mithans
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
With the foundation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, the respective nationalities and ethnic communities were faced with the reality of a multi-confessional state. Internal migration and minority policy, in particular, set in motion a slow diversification in the religious sphere, even in the ethnically and religiously extremely homogeneous territory of Slovenia. This paper aims to analyze the role that religious converts—who were largely former Catholics—played during the interwar period in Slovenian regions in the phenomenon of the gradual transformation of the religious landscape over a long period of time. Converts were an important part of almost all …

Who Is Afraid Of ẸfúNṣetáN AníWúRà? Performing Power In Yoruba Masculinist Oligarchy, Omolola A. Ladele, Abimbola O. Oyinlola
Journal of International Women's Studies
The iconic Yoruba female personage of Ẹfúnṣetán Aníwúrà has, in several studies, been vilified; and at a first glance, it would seem that Akinwunmi Isola’s eponymous protagonist and heroine of that play reinforces the image of a villainous, wicked and self-centred woman. Contextualized within the Yoruba socio-political and economic national narratives of the late18th and early 19th centuries, this image appears both problematic and complexly contradictory. It is therefore useful to appropriately recuperate and verify the status of Ẹfúnṣetán Aníwúrà within the backdrop of Yoruba cultural context. This is illustrated through a feminist re-reading of Ẹfúnṣetán’s actions and …
