School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Military literature has demonstrated the utility and safety of tourniquets in preventing mortality for some time, paving the way for increased use of tourniquets in civilian settings, including perioperatively to provide a bloodless surgical field. However, tourniquet use is not without risk and the subsequent effects of tissue ischemia can impede downstream rehabilitative efforts to regenerate and salvage nerve, muscle, tissue and bone in the limb. Limb ischemia studies in both the mouse and pig models have indicated not only that there is residual flow past the tourniquet by means of microcirculation, but also that recovery from tissue ischemia is …

Tuning In To Teens (Tint) With Adoptive Parents And Guardians In The Us: The Replication Phase Of Intervention Research, Nancy Rolock

Faculty Scholarship

Ensuring the wellbeing and stability of children with foster care experiences is critical. Between 5% and 20% of children experience post-permanency instability, a reentry into foster care after adoption or guardianship; adolescents are at increased risk for post-permanency instability. Few interventions that aim to reduce post-permanency instability have been rigorously tested. This study adapted and tested Tuning in to Teens (TINT), previously tested in Australia as a prevention program with parents of adolescents. TINT teaches caregivers skills in emotion coaching (responding with empathy, support, and guidance when young people express emotions) while helping them to reduce their dismissive or harsh …

Damage Sensing And Mechanical Properties Of A Laminate Composite Material Containing Mwcnts During Low-Velocity Impact, M Al-Bahrani, Mrh Alhakeem, A Cree

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this work, we present a new criterion, unlike other attempts, to evaluate and quantify the degree of damage of composite material when it subjected to a sudden impact load. Our criterion exploits the high intrinsic electrical conductivity property of the Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) after dispersing different concentrations of them (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 %) in the epoxy matrix of a glass fibre composite. Following this goal, the low-velocity impact and flexural after impact (FAI) tests on the MWCNTs-glass epoxy (i.e. MWCNTs-GF) nanocomposite were evaluated. At the same time, the changes in its electrical resistance were measured. …

A Comparison Of Standardized Letters Of Evaluation For Emergency Medicine Residency Applicants., David Wilson, Chaiya Laoteppitaks, Shruti Chandra

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Medical students pursuing an emergency medicine (EM) residency are advised to obtain at least two Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOE). Students often complete one rotation at their home institution and at least one "away" rotation at a program separate from their home institution. The SLOE was introduced as an objective evaluation tool. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in scores between home rotation and away rotation SLOEs.

METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the SLOEs of all applicants to an urban, academic EM residency program. For each SLOE, we calculated a composite score from …

Student Perceptions Of Stress And Relaxation At The Beginning And End Of The Week, Molly M. Hudson, Emily Halvorson, Jaylee Oliver, Katrina Johnson, Gracelyn Lane, Kristen Black Dec 2020

Student Perceptions Of Stress And Relaxation At The Beginning And End Of The Week, Molly M. Hudson, Emily Halvorson, Jaylee Oliver, Katrina Johnson, Gracelyn Lane, Kristen Black

Modern Psychological Studies

This study examined whether student perceptions of stress, their level of relaxation remorse, and their health symptoms varied at the beginning verses the end of the week. We also examined how stress and relaxation remorse correlate with health symptoms at the beginning verses the end of the week. The findings of this study indicate that students have more relaxation remorse, perceived stress, and health symptoms on Monday than on Friday; additionally, students reported fewer coping activities on Monday than on Friday. Our results also indicate that students’ level perceived stress and relaxation remorse relate to their level of health symptoms. …

Effects Of An Aqua-Titanium Necklace On Running Speed When Examined At The Individual And Group Levels, Nathan A. Weber, Mychal A. Machado, Duane D. Wood Dec 2020

Effects Of An Aqua-Titanium Necklace On Running Speed When Examined At The Individual And Group Levels, Nathan A. Weber, Mychal A. Machado, Duane D. Wood

Modern Psychological Studies

Results from previous evaluations of athletic wearables infused with Aqua Titanium have been mixed with respect to ergogenic effectiveness. This might be due to exclusive reliance on group designs in previous studies. The purpose of our study was to evaluate and compare the individual and group differences in responsiveness to an Aqua-Titanium necklace. Using a single-subject (reversal) design, we measured the running speed of 10 healthy adults across baseline (no necklace), test (Aqua-Titanium necklace) and placebo conditions using a 61-m indoor track. The entire sample was then considered for group analyses. Results showed that our single-subject and group analyses produced …

Literature Review Of The Relationship Between Illness Identity And Recovery Outcomes Among Adults With Severe Mental Illness, Veronica W. Wanyee, Dr. Josephine Arasa Dec 2020

Literature Review Of The Relationship Between Illness Identity And Recovery Outcomes Among Adults With Severe Mental Illness, Veronica W. Wanyee, Dr. Josephine Arasa

Modern Psychological Studies

This paper is a literature review of the relationship between illness identity and recovery outcomes among adults with severe mental illness. First, illness identity is explored as presented in the literature, through analysis of work on narrativization, labeling theory and the role of gender stereotypes. Literature on stigmatization as a mediating factor that influences the ways illness identity impacts recovery is also studied. Finally, work is presented on recovery outcomes that are a direct result of self-perception. Findings suggest the existence of two paradigms; positive and negative illness identity as the result of mediating factors from the diagnosis stage. A …

Public Health At The Public Library: Preventive Health Programs Implemented In Large Public Libraries, Uday Aj Patil

SLIS Connecting

Amid the opioid epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic, the public sector is consumed with health promotion and disease prevention. Preventive programs serve a significant purpose in ensuring population health and reducing burden on the healthcare system (Cohen et al., 2008; Neumann & Cohen, 2009). People are increasingly turning to educational resources outside of the traditional healthcare sector to ward off diseases or alleviate pre-existing conditions (Eakin et al., 1980; Eng et al., 1998). Public library systems often carry such resources, in print and multimedia form, at no cost. Some libraries are providing health programming to supplement, contextualize, or incentivize the use …

Synthesis Of Metal Nanoparticles Using Plants: An Ecofriendly Approach, Dutt Rohit, Dhir Sarika, Singh Mhaveer

Central Asian Journal of Pediatrics

Synthesis of metal nanoparticles using plants by green synthesis technology is biologically safe, environment-friendly and cost-effective. Plant contains various biomolecules such as alkaloids, phenolics, terpenoids, saponins, co-enzymes. These phytoconstituents are present in various parts of plant such as leaves, stem, roots, flower, bark. It has been found that these phytocomponents act as reducing and stabilizing agent in the production of metallic nanoparticles such as silver, gold, copper, platinum, zinc oxide etc. These plant mediated nanoparticles are used as antimicrobial, antifungal and a potential remedy for diseases like cancer, HIV, malaria, hepatitis etc.
