Treatment And Diagnostic Considerations In A Complex Psychiatric Case - A Case Report, Evan N. Caporaso, John M. Woo Dec 2020

Treatment And Diagnostic Considerations In A Complex Psychiatric Case - A Case Report, Evan N. Caporaso, John M. Woo

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

A patient with a history of autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy was hospitalized for management of acute onset psychosis and agitation. The acuity of his behaviors warranted abrupt shifts in treatment and multiple pharmacologic interventions were ineffective. The atypical nature of his presentation and intense pressure from ancillary staff to consider organic etiologies drove frequent transitions of care within the hospital setting. Multiple diagnoses were considered including a primary psychosis, excited catatonia and antiepileptic drug-induced psychotic disorder. Ultimately the patient was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and effectively treated with quetiapine and valproic acid. The authors suggest that rapid consideration of …

Multidisciplinary Approach To Diagnosing And Managing A Case Of Peritoneal Mesothelioma, Jonathan Maw, Geoffrey Kelly, Miriam Enriquez, Ronak Gor, Pauline Germaine

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare cause of a peritoneal mass in adults and can occur in malignant or benign forms. Compared to the pleural variant of mesothelioma, the peritoneal form is understudied due to the small number of reported cases. We present a case of an 84 year old male with a history of asbestos exposure who initially presented for an aggravated hernia, was found to have an incidental mass on imaging, and ultimately was diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM)1 likely related to prior asbestos exposure. This case study will provide a review of literature and discuss the role …

Defining Inclusionary Practices In Catholic Schools, Sean J. Smith, G Cheatham, Jennifer M. Amilivia Dec 2020

Defining Inclusionary Practices In Catholic Schools, Sean J. Smith, G Cheatham, Jennifer M. Amilivia

Journal of Catholic Education

The purpose of this article is to provide Catholic educators, administrators, families, and broader parish communities an understanding of critical elements required to effectively include all students, particularly those with disabilities, in Catholic schools. With an understanding that Catholic schools enroll and will continue to add not only students with disabilities, but also other students who may struggle with learning in some manner, the Catholic school community needs to keep abreast of effective practices that facilitate meaningful inclusion. This is especially relevant for those Catholic families who desire a Catholic education for their children with disabilities, as well as their …

Stimuli-responsive nanocarriers have become increasingly important for nucleic acid and drug delivery in cancer therapy. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of disulphide-linked, octadecyl (C18 alkyl) chain-bearing PEGylated generation 3-diaminobutyric polypropylenimine dendrimer-based vesicles (or dendrimersomes) for gene delivery. The lipid-bearing PEGylated dendrimer was successfully synthesized through in situ two-step reaction. It was able to spontaneously self-assemble into stable, cationic, nanosized vesicles, with low critical aggregation concentration value, and also showed redox-responsiveness in presence of a glutathione concentration similar to that of the cytosolic reducing environment. In addition, it was able to condense more than 70% of DNA at …

Work-Family Spillover And Depression: Are There Racial Differences Among Employed Women?, Ariane L. Rung, Evrim Oral, Edward S. Peters

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

The intersection of work and family life can be a source of burden (negative) and a source of growth (positive). Negative work-to-family and family-to-work spillover have been linked to poor mental health, while positive work-to-family and family-to-work spillover have been linked to improved health outcomes. Less is known about these relationships in racial subgroups. Louisiana, USA, has a large proportion of African Americans, providing a unique population in which to study these relationships. The objectives of this study were to examine, among a sample of women in southern Louisiana in 2017, levels of work-family spillover by race and how the …

Role Of Sirtuins In Modulating Neurodegeneration Of The Enteric Nervous System And Central Nervous System., Pavithra Chandramowlishwaran, Anitha Vijay, Daniel Abraham, Ge Li, Simon Musyoka Mwangi, Shanthi Srinivasan

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Neurodegeneration of the central and enteric nervous systems is a common feature of aging and aging-related diseases, and is accelerated in individuals with metabolic dysfunction including obesity and diabetes. The molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in both the CNS and ENS are overlapping. Sirtuins are an important family of histone deacetylases that are important for genome stability, cellular response to stress, and nutrient and hormone sensing. They are activated by calorie restriction (CR) and by the coenzyme, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). Sirtuins, specifically the nuclear SIRT1 and mitochondrial SIRT3, have been shown to have predominantly neuroprotective roles in the CNS while …

Docking Station With On-Demand Physical Memory (Ram) Enhance Processing Power And User Experience, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

Notebook computers conventionally operate on volatile memory that is RAM for accessing multiple

programs at once with Speed and efficiency, as RAM is significantly faster than hard disk. When

operating a device with multiple heavy application that requires heavy usage of volatile memory to

process information immediately, RAM helps to succeeded with the task when there is enough of

memory available with the device’s RAM.

In designing notebook computers, there is trade‐off between the size of the RAM to be fitted for

performing better operations. Often devices have limited RAM and the applications that are being

used/ operated needs more …

Asarco Llc V. Atlantic Richfield Co., Llc, Taylor A. Simpson

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In 2009, Asarco reached a settlement agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency for the arsenic-contaminated East Helena lead smelting facility. As part of the settlement, Asarco was responsible for $111.4 million in cleanup and remediation expenses. Following this payment, Asarco brought a contribution claim under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act against Atlantic Richfield. Finally, in 2020, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that Asarco’s remediation expenses of $111.4 million were not eligible for contribution because the costs were not fully incurred. The Ninth Circuit stated that only incurred or concrete, non-speculative future costs can be eligible …

Compulsory Licensing Of Climate Engineering Patents: How Embracing Technology- And Research-Sharing Strategies Brings Us One Step Closer To Solving Climate Change, Buzz Hardin

Arkansas Law Review

The impact of climate change spans the globe and includes increasingly severe and dangerous climate events, including coastal flooding, extreme heat and wildfires, reduced crop yield, and decreased food security. In the United States, if the proper steps toward mitigating or reversing the effects of climate change are not taken, it is very likely that the United States will experience substantial damage to its economy, the health of its citizens, and the environment. In response to the challenges presented by climate change, the number of inventions in the field of climate engineering, or “geoengineering,” has skyrocketed over the past several …

A Quiet War: The Judiciary's Steady And Unspoken Effort To Limit Felony-Murder, Maggie Davis

Arkansas Law Review

On a Wednesday afternoon a sixteen-year-old boy is hanging out after school with four of his friends. He is your average sixteen-year-old; he has a girlfriend who works at Wendy’s, and his current worry is about passing his driving test. He smokes some weed from time to time with his friends, but he has a clean criminal record. After complaining about being broke and deciding they have nothing better to do, the five friends elect to break into a seemingly vacant home in order to steal some items for resale. He is already thinking about what he will buy with …

The Jones Trespass Doctrine And The Need For A Reasonable Solution To Unreasonable Protection, Geoffrey Corn Dec 2020

The Jones Trespass Doctrine And The Need For A Reasonable Solution To Unreasonable Protection, Geoffrey Corn

Arkansas Law Review

Each day that Houston drivers exit from Interstate 45 to drive to downtown Houston, they pass an odd sight. Nestled within some bushes is an encampment of tents. This encampment is very clearly located on public property adjacent to the interstate highway, and equally clearly populated by homeless individuals. While local police ostensibly tolerate this presence, at least temporarily, the sight frequently evokes an image in my mind of a police search of those tents. This thought is especially prominent on the days I am driving to my law school, South Texas College of Law Houston, to teach my federal …

The Comparative Legal Landscape Of Educational Pluralism, Nicole Stelle Garnett Dec 2020

The Comparative Legal Landscape Of Educational Pluralism, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Arkansas Law Review

In the United States, debates about private and faith-based education tend to focus on questions about government funding: which kinds of schools should the government fund (and at what levels)? Should, for example, students be able to use public funds to attend privately operated schools? Faith-based schools? If so, what policy mechanisms should be used to fund private schools—vouchers, tax credits, direct transfer payments? How much funding should these schools receive? The same amount as public schools or less? As a historical matter, the focus on funding in the United States makes sense because only public (that is, government-operated) elementary …

Religious Views And Coping In The Black Community, Tresaundra Roberson, Elizabeth Yost Hammer Dec 2020

Religious Views And Coping In The Black Community, Tresaundra Roberson, Elizabeth Yost Hammer

XULAneXUS

Abstract

The topic of mental illness is taboo in the Black Community. This experiment sought to explore the relationship between the religious views African Americans hold and how they deal with mental illness stigma. I considered the factors of religiosity and coping, as a predictor of what type of coping mechanism the individual would choose to use. Undergraduates were given two surveys using Likert-Scales followed by a demographic section, the first measured how religious an individual was using the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS), while the second measured how often an individual used certain coping mechanisms derived from the COPE …

Using Simulation For Oncology Nursing Competency Evaluation In Hospitals, Dana N. Littlepage Dec 2020

Using Simulation For Oncology Nursing Competency Evaluation In Hospitals, Dana N. Littlepage

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Hospitals in an integrated health system, are experiencing low levels of oncologic admissions to their medical surgical units. This is creating a challenge for the organization to maintain nursing competencies for this subset of patients.

Context: In low volume, high risk acute care environments, where chemotherapy is to be provided, seasoned registered nurses grapple with maintaining their competencies, professional confidence and feeling safe enough to administer, monitor and care for this patient population (Muehlbauer, Parr, & Perkins, 2013). The purpose of this project was to ensure that both new and seasoned acute care oncology nurses have access …
