Underachieving Profoundly Gifted Adolescents, Marisa Soto Harrison
Underachieving Profoundly Gifted Adolescents, Marisa Soto Harrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Underachieving Profoundly Gifted Adolescents is a phenomenological study that explores the lived experiences of five underachieving profoundly gifted adolescents. Profoundly gifted individuals are those whose IQ scores are at the 99.9th percentile. This study was a means to explore factors that contribute to underachievement among this subpopulation of gifted students. In-depth interviews with young adults provided insight into the personal experiences of underachievement in profoundly gifted adolescents. Parents also took part in interviews to provide an additional perspective on the underachievement experience. Findings indicated five themes that contribute to underachievement among this population. Expectations were a major contributor to underachievement. …
How Mediation Between Schools And Students Will Help Students Combat Student Debt, Joshua A. Graber
How Mediation Between Schools And Students Will Help Students Combat Student Debt, Joshua A. Graber
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
By using mediation, schools can help students to no longer be crippled by their debt and instead reinvest in themselves and their future. Section II will supply a background of our country's education system, financial options for education and show how we reached this point in our student debt crisis. Section III will discuss whether colleges and educational institutions will become obsolete, whether there are sufficient programs to possibly make college tuition free, and explore whether other universities and schools will follow in some institutions footsteps and try to make their programs tuition free. Section IV will propose using mediation …
The Need For Negotiation In Water Resource Disputes Between Central Asian States, Tamiris Askarova
The Need For Negotiation In Water Resource Disputes Between Central Asian States, Tamiris Askarova
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Negotiation can take many forms and have different structures; however, I propose that establishing meetings between each states' leaders of their energy and environmental governmental bodies along with members of The Permanent Indus Commission, as they have dealt with similar concerns, would be the most beneficial and efficient method of resolving water use disputes. In Part II, I introduce relevant background information and examples of water use treaties and agreements that have proven to be successful either at maintaining or encouraging cooperation between various states. Part III will look into each state's current legislation and entities that manage water resources. …

Wolves In Sheep’S Clothing: How Religious Exemption Laws For Discriminatory Private Agencies Violate The Constitution And Harm Lgbtq+ Families, Kharis Lund
Student Articles & Notes
For LGBTQ+ parents who live in states where a select few faith-based private agencies control the placement of a majority of the state’s children, religious organizations that refuse to place children with LGBTQ+ prospective parents pose a particularly concerning barrier to fostering and adoption. To turn away otherwise qualified prospective parents solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity is to further deprive a system that is already burdened of one of its key components, directly antithetical to the primary goal of the child welfare system. Although religious child welfare agencies have played, and continue to play, an important …

Impacts Of The Reproductive Cycle On The Microbiome: Lessons From Peromyscus Maniculatus, Stephania Jimenez-Castro
Impacts Of The Reproductive Cycle On The Microbiome: Lessons From Peromyscus Maniculatus, Stephania Jimenez-Castro
McNair Scholars
This low-cost pilot study performed in an animal model attempts to answer the question of whether the estrous cycle affects skin bacteria population size and diversity. In the study, deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are models because the University of Northern Colorado maintains a colony at the animal research facility, and the rodents have a conveniently short reproductive cycle. Vaginal swabs and flushes were collected for two full estrous cycles to obtain cells for determination of the phase of the cycle and flora samples to examine diversity and population size. We witnessed the vaginal flora fluctuate throughout the entire cycle …
Assessing Latinx Colorism And Skin Tone Dating Preferences, Yessica M. Berumen Martinez
Assessing Latinx Colorism And Skin Tone Dating Preferences, Yessica M. Berumen Martinez
McNair Scholars
Colorism is favoring by individuals of lighter skin over darker skin. This differs from racism because racism is discrimination directed towards racial or ethnic minorities, while colorism typically refers to within-group prejudice. The purpose out of this study is to find out whether and how Latinx individuals’ self-perceived skin color, family, and friends influence their dating skin color preference. 145 respondents ages 18 and over completed the In-group Colorism Scale by Harvey, Banks, and Tennial (2017) and answered additional questions on skin tone perceptions on dating, and parent and friend influences. There was no significant connection between self-perceived skin color …

Genetic And Functional Analyses Of Virulence Potential Of An Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Strain Isolated From Super-Shedder Cattle, Lin Teng, Shinyoung Lee, Dongjin Park, Kwangcheol Casey Jeong
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 is an enteric pathogen that causes life-threatening disease in humans, with cattle being major natural reservoirs. A group of STEC O157:H7 with a dramatic combination of high virulence potentials and super-shedder bovine origin have been isolated. Here, an STEC O157:H7 isolate, JEONG-1266, was analyzed by comparative genomics, stx genotyping, and phenotypic analyses. The phylogenetic typing and whole-genome comparison consistently showed that JEONG-1266 is genetically close to EC4115 (one of 2006 Spinach outbreak isolates) and SS17 (an isolate from super-shedder cattle) strains, all of which belong to lineage I/II and Clade 8. Both lineage …

Two cosegregating single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in human TLR4, an A896G transition at SNP rs4986790 (D299G) and a C1196T transition at SNP rs4986791 (T399I), have been associated with LPS hyporesponsiveness and differential susceptibility to many infectious or inflammatory diseases. However, many studies failed to confirm these associations, and transfection experiments resulted in conflicting conclusions about the impact of these SNPs on TLR4 signaling. Using advanced protein modeling from crystallographic data of human and murine TLR4, we identified homologous substitutions of these SNPs in murine Tlr4, engineered a knock-in strain expressing the D298G and N397I TLR4 SNPs homozygously, and characterized in vivo …
Nalini Malani's Medea Project: Gender And Nationhood In Postcolonial India, Maya Varma
Nalini Malani's Medea Project: Gender And Nationhood In Postcolonial India, Maya Varma
Art and Art History Honors Projects
In 1996, renowned contemporary Indian artist Nalini Malani embarked on what would become a decades-long project exploring the Greek myth of Medea as an embodiment of postcolonialism. Considering Medea’s historical interpretations as a mistreated wife and a villainous mother, this thesis examines how Malani transforms Medea into a metaphor of resistance to British colonialism and anticolonial nationalism in post-Partition India. Against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and subsequent political events relating nationhood with the female body, Malani negotiates Medea as an emancipatory figure who shifts essentialized notions of womanhood into more complex narratives of violence, subjectivity, and liberation.

Population Pharmacokinetics Of Ribavirin In Lung Transplant Recipients And Examination Of Current And Alternative Dosing Regimens, Eliza Milliken
Theses
Ribavirin is used in the treatment of respiratory paramyxovirus infection in lung transplant recipients; however, its pharmacokinetic profile in the transplant population is unknown despite the potential for alterations due to underlying pathology. Furthermore, the ability of current regimens to meet exposure targets has not been established. This study examined the pharmacokinetics of ribavirin in a lung transplant population from which current and alternate dosing regimens were assessed. Population pharmacokinetic modelling was conducted in NONMEM using concentrationtime data from 24 lung transplant recipients and 6 healthy volunteers. Monte Carlo simulation was used to assess the ability of dosing regimens to …
Is Liberal Democracy A Contradiction?: A Study Of Political Participation And Inequality In Australia During The 1960s And 1970s, Daniel A. Elias
Is Liberal Democracy A Contradiction?: A Study Of Political Participation And Inequality In Australia During The 1960s And 1970s, Daniel A. Elias
Theses
The central concern of this thesis is the disconnect between the premise of democracy and economic realities. The first section of the thesis examines the essential components of a democratic political system by drawing upon political theorists of the past and present. From Aristotle to Robert Dahl the thesis gains an understanding of what democracy is, by identifying and isolating its essential mechanisms. The following section situates liberalism and its origins. Such a history is critical for within liberalism is the sum of many social norms, philosophies, laws, and culture in Australia. Combining political theory and the historical context of …
Active Rehabilitation In Sports-Related Concussions: An Educational Intervention For Primary Care Providers, Lior Habinsky
Active Rehabilitation In Sports-Related Concussions: An Educational Intervention For Primary Care Providers, Lior Habinsky
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background and Review of Literature: Sports-related concussion (SRC) is a form of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head and remains a prevalent issue across the 11-18-year-old age group within the United States. Historically, total physical and cognitive rest has been the preferred method to help individuals recover after suffering a concussion. However, recent data have shown that incorporating active rehabilitation or aerobic exercise therapy as part of acute post-concussion treatment is safe. Further investigation into these methods could provide valuable insight into prognosis as well as promote clinical recovery.
Purposes/Goal: This project involved delivering an educational …

Domestic Violence In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (Cald) Communities: Perceptions, Therapeutic Approaches And Responses Of Frontline Workers In New South Wales (Nsw), Oluwatoyin A. Dedeigbo
Theses
Domestic violence is a universal public health concern (VicHealth, 2011; World Health Organisation [WHO], 2013). Domestic violence cuts across all countries, regardless of economic, social, cultural or religious differences (Ali et al., 2020; VicHealth, 2011; WHO 2013). Men are often responsible for perpetrating domestic violence against women (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2019; Australia Institute of Health and Welfare [AIHW], 2018).
The effects of domestic violence on victims can be serious and long-term; affecting their physical and mental wellbeing, and lingering even after the exposure to violence has ended (Mitchell, 2011). That is, the effect on victims’ mental health is …
Improving Provider Confidence And Partnership With Lgbt Patients Through Inclusivity And Education, Katherine Rowe
Improving Provider Confidence And Partnership With Lgbt Patients Through Inclusivity And Education, Katherine Rowe
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The focus of this project utilizes patient recommendations for LGBT-inclusive intake practices to increase provider confidence in communication with LGBT patients using pre-and post-survey data comparing provider confidence before and after a 20-minute video education session. LGBT-inclusive provider education has been shown to be deficient if not nonexistent in most educational settings, yet, LGBT individuals have increased risk of negative health disparities, violence, and discrimination. Research examining the ability for small changes in provider education to enable positive health outcomes for this vulnerable and marginalized population is imperative for the quality of life of these communities. A quasi-experimental design utilized …

Causes Of Variable Jarrah (Eucalyptus Marginata) And Marri (Corymbia Calophylla) Seedling Density At Establishment Following Bauxite Mining In The Northern Jarrah Forest Of Western Australia, Tai White-Toney
Theses
Seedling densities at establishment of jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata D. Don ex Sm.) and marri (Corymbia calophylla (Lindl). K. D. Hill & L. A. S. Johnson) following bauxite mining in the Northern Jarrah Forest of south-western Australia are variable and few factors explored during 40 years of field studies have explained this variability. This study explored establishment within the framework of limitation due to amount of seed supply and number of suitable microsites for establishment. First, relationships were identified between seedling establishment densities on 654 mine sites restored between 1998 and 2017 and restoration practices (seed and fertiliser application rates), climate …
Historical – Grammatical Analysis Of Worship In Spirit And Truth, Steven Sunthang
Historical – Grammatical Analysis Of Worship In Spirit And Truth, Steven Sunthang
Theses
Since the creation of humankind, God interacts and communicates with them, blessing them to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and have dominion over the creation (Gen. 1:28). God provides clear instructions how to approach him and their surroundings. The method of approaching God is later called “worship.” Over a period of time, humans learned “worship” by themselves, without necessarily following the proper guidelines from God. As a consequence, certain form of worship displeased God. Later, God who became flesh in Jesus (John 1:14) set the rule for worship, that is, “in spirit and truth,” a phrase that is subject …
Assessing The Performance Of Voluntary Environmental Programs, Luis Inaraja Vera
Assessing The Performance Of Voluntary Environmental Programs, Luis Inaraja Vera
Law Faculty Scholarship
In recent years, government agencies have increasingly relied on voluntary programs to achieve a variety of goals, from improving worker safety to creating healthier living conditions in urban areas. This type of government initiative is based on a bargain between the agency and private citizens: the government provides certain incentives—economic or otherwise—and private actors voluntarily adopt behaviors that benefit the public. One example is cleaning up a contaminated site and building an affordable housing project.
While agencies have made substantial progress since the creation of the first voluntary programs, much work remains. To move forward in this area, and especially …
Times Of The Multitude And The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro
Times Of The Multitude And The Antichrist, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In Nietzsche’s Europeanism Gary Shapiro discerns key resonances of his “great politics of the Earth” out of which those capable of “re-thinking the direction of the earth” may ultimately deploy a “philosophy of the Antichrist” to realize their vision of the future. In considering how philosophers of the future may create the opportune moment in which to revalue all values in such a new direction, Shapiro accounts for Nietzsche’s rejection of the priestly philosophers’ teleological conception of time. He also explicates Nietzsche’s notion of the multitude (Menge), whose diversity contrasts with the homogenous masses and mitigates against the reactionary state.

Improving Compliance With The Vitalgo Total Lift Bed To Improve Patient Outcomes: A Quality Improvement Study, Brittany Kellum
DNP Projects
Background: Immobilization is frequently encountered in critically ill adult patients within the intensive care unit (ICU) leading to numerous, detrimental effects including increased hospital and ICU length of stay, increased ventilator days, and increased mortality. One measure to increase early mobility of critically ill patients at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center (UKMC) is implementing the VitalGo Total Lift Bed (TLB). The TLB vertically tilts a secured patient upright from zero to 82 degrees, allowing immobile patients to benefit from early weight bearing therapy and early, progressive mobility in the confines of the bed. Despite implementation of the TLB, …
College Campus Outreach To Increase Chlamydia Screenings, Elizabeth Kinney
College Campus Outreach To Increase Chlamydia Screenings, Elizabeth Kinney
DNP Projects
A common sexual health concern around the world is sexually transmitted infections (STI). Chlamydia is the most reported sexual health problem. The highest prevalence of chlamydia rates is among ages 15-24, which includes college age students (CDC, 2019). The lack of education provided to students prior to starting college by parents, health care providers and high school sources as well as inaccurate information obtained from peers and erroneous internet sources may lead to misconceptions about STIs and consequently the avoidance of routine screening among this high-risk population (Canan & Jozkowski, 2017).
The purpose of this project was to determine if …

Increasing Adherence To A Light Sedation Protocol By Increasing Nurses’ Knowledge And Confidence, Katie Rust
DNP Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Oversedation in the mechanically ventilated patient can cause long- and short-term adverse side effects. Light sedation practices provide patients with relief from agitation and pain and still allows them to actively participate in care. A light sedation protocol was introduced to bedside ICU registered nurses (RNs) at the University of Kentucky Medical Center (UKMC), but deep sedation is still commonplace. Reeducating bedside RNs and increasing their knowledge and confidence is a proposed strategy for increasing adherence to light sedation protocols.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to gain understanding of bedside RNs knowledge and perceived …
