Increasing evidence suggests Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology is influenced by primary and secondary bile acids, the end product of cholesterol metabolism. We analyze 2,114 post-mortem brain transcriptomes and identify genes in the alternative bile acid synthesis pathway to be expressed in the brain. A targeted metabolomic analysis of primary and secondary bile acids measured from post-mortem brain samples of 111 individuals supports these results. Our metabolic network analysis suggests that taurine transport, bile acid synthesis, and cholesterol metabolism differ in AD and cognitively normal individuals. We also identify putative transcription factors regulating metabolic genes and influencing altered metabolism in AD. …

EnvP(b)1 is an endogenous retroviral envelope gene found in human and other primate genomes. We report EnvP(b)1 sequences in primate genomes consistent with an integration event between 40 and 71 million years ago. Using a highly specific polyclonal antiserum raised against the putative receptor binding domain (RBD) of human EnvP(b)1, we detected expression in human placenta, ovaries, and thymus. We found that EnvP(b)1 is proteolytically processed, and using cell-cell fusion assays in multiple primate cell lines, we demonstrated that extant EnvP(b)1 proteins from a variety of primate genomes are fusogenic. This work supports the idea that EnvP(b)1 is under purifying …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The prevention and control of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is the priority work to maintain the public health security of the world nowadays. The COVID-19 prevention and control model using multi-agent modeling and simulation technology is proposed. The model can simulate the different dynamic development trend of the epidemic under different prevention and control measures. Taking Taiyuan as an example, according to the researched COVID-19 transmission rules, the prevention and control simulation of COVID-19 has been achieved under the designing rule of the interactive infection process and status transition process between various resident agents. Multi-scenario simulation experiments are realized …

An Ulk1-Independent Mechanism Of Atg9a Regulation In Basal Autophagy, Ashari Rashmi Kannangara Nov 2020

An Ulk1-Independent Mechanism Of Atg9a Regulation In Basal Autophagy, Ashari Rashmi Kannangara

Theses and Dissertations

Macroautophagy (hereafter referred to as autophagy) is the bulk degradation and recycling of cytoplasmic materials by forming a double membrane vesicle called the autophagosome. Autophagosome formation is regulated by the coordinated action of a set of proteins. ATG9A is the only multispanning transmembrane protein that plays an essential role in autophagosome formation, yet its function is largely elusive. Previous studies have shown that the C-terminus of ATG9A plays an important role in regulating its trafficking and proper function in autophagy. In line with that idea, we previously identified an AMPK- and ULK1- mediated phosphorylation on the C terminus of ATG9A …

Library Publishing Curriculum Impact Module: Assessment Measures And Strategies (Unit 3), Instructor's Guide, John W. Warren

Library Publishing Curriculum

We have previously discussed methods and tools for strategic planning and crafting effective goals. How do we know if we are making progress towards these goals? How can we determine if our publications and our work is having the impact we want? This unit introduces assessment methods, tools, and metrics that help us measure the impact of individual publications and publishing programs. We will look at the connection between strategic planning and assessment, and practice applying assessment methods to real-world scenarios. In the first half of the unit, we discuss evaluating individual publications, examining the advantages and disadvantages of common …

Gastrointestinal Parasites In The Neotropical Otter (Lontra Longicaudis Annectens) In Central Mexico, Erika Y. Badillo Flores, Marcos G. Torres Tobón, C. Gustavo Aguilar Cabrera, O. Eric Ramírez-Bravo, Eva Romero Callejas

Western North American Naturalist

We analyzed 47 scats of neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis annectens), collected along the Necaxa River in Central Mexico, using the Willis flotation technique with a 48% saturated saline solution. Along with plant material, we found the endoparasites Oxyuris equi, Ascaris sp., and Strongylus equinus, among others. Our results indicate that otters in the Necaxa River have a parasite load that needs further analysis, particularly because 2 of the parasite species are associated with human activity.

Journal Articles

Background: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) has been associated with the loss of function (LoF) mutations in Filaggrin (FLG) gene and increase in relative abundance of specific microbes in the lesional skin, predominantly in Caucasians. Our study aims to determine, in Indian AD patients, (a) the prevalence of FLG LoF and missense mutations, and (b) the nature and extent of dysbiosis and altered microbial pathways with and without mutations in FLG. AD patients (n = 34) and healthy controls (n = 54) were recruited from India in this study and shotgun sequencing was carried out in a subset of samples with adequate …

For Our Sakes: An Incarnational And Systemic Approach To The Challenge Of Poverty, Alan Parker Nov 2020

For Our Sakes: An Incarnational And Systemic Approach To The Challenge Of Poverty, Alan Parker

Faculty Works

How do Christians face the challenge of poverty? This paper proposes a grace-based approach to poverty. By recognizing our poverty and how God has shown grace to us, we are inspired to care for the poverty of others. The problem of the poor, which includes us, is not material poverty but broken relationships. Solving poverty requires that one enter into the world of the poor person and to see the richness that they have, even in their material poverty. The entire system of broken relationships must be repaired and the goal must be the restoration of shalom. We will therefore …

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

In this project, we researched the relationship between Islam and the state. We conducted our research by using the University of Dayton databases to find different journals and articles analyzing our topic. We found that the relationship is constantly evolving and depends on where you are located. We also found that Islam has not always been properly investigated and is not as widely understood as it could be.

The peripartum period is accompanied by numerous physiological and behavioural adaptations organised by the maternal brain. These changes are essential for adequate expression of maternal behaviour, thereby ensuring proper development of the offspring. The corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) plays a key role in a variety of behaviours accompanying stress, anxiety, and depression. There is also evidence that CRF contributes to maladaptations during the peripartum period. We investigated the effects of CRF in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) of lactating mice during maternal care and analysed locomotor activity and anxiety-like behaviour in the offspring. The BNST has been implicated …
