The Eastern Panhandle Economic Outlook: 2021-2025, Brian Lego, John Deskins Nov 2020

The Eastern Panhandle Economic Outlook: 2021-2025, Brian Lego, John Deskins

Bureau of Business & Economic Research

West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle (EPH) has ranked as the state’s strongest economic region for a decade, with employment and other major indicators pointing to underlying strength in the EPH economy compared to West Virginia. The COVID-19 pandemic has hurt the EPH’s economy and will weigh on growth over the next few months, but the area should snap back by late-2021. In this report, we present a detailed discussion of the current state of the EPH economy along with our forecast for the likely path of economic activity over the next five years.

Nutrient Concentration For Cyanotoxins At Turnbull (Proposal), Mori Williams Nov 2020

Nutrient Concentration For Cyanotoxins At Turnbull (Proposal), Mori Williams

2020 McNair Scholar Collection

The purpose of this study is to analyze the concentration of microcystins from cyanobacteria along with factors that increase the likelihood of microcystins found in water systems at the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) near Cheney, Washington. Cyanobacteria are oxygen-producing bacteria that use sunlight as an energy source to convert CO2 into biomass. This bacterium has been around for around 3 billion years. However, in recent years, cyanobacteria have been a major issue in drinking water and aquatic ecosystems due to eutrophication, rising CO2 levels, and global warming (Huisman et al). Due to anthropogenic sources such as agricultural run-off and …

Everyday Gratitude In Times Of Uncertainty, Carol Wittmeyer Nov 2020

Everyday Gratitude In Times Of Uncertainty, Carol Wittmeyer

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

It’s worth reiterating: although Election Day has come and gone, political upheaval and uncertainty are far from over. And rather than drawing to a close, all evidence points to the Coronavirus pandemic gaining momentum before the arrival of a scarce vaccine requiring a demanding supply chain. Add ongoing (and perhaps escalating) racial tensions and economic disruption from which it will takes months and years to recover, and it’s no wonder so many of us are struggling to cultivate a positive outlook—and to help our employees, colleagues, students and families manage successfully through this time of complex, inter-related crises.

Marijuana Policy Nov 2020

Marijuana Policy

Human Resources Policies

The State of Missouri has legalized the cultivation, possession, dispensing, distribution, sale, and use of marijuana for recreational use and treatment of specific diseases and chronic illnesses by patients upon the recommendation of a Missouri licensed physician and receipt of a valid Missouri registration card. Missouri and other states’ laws that legalize medical and/or recreational marijuana conflict with University (UHSP) policy and the federal Controlled Substance Act, which classifies marijuana as an illegal drug. The University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (“UHSP”), as a recipient of federal funding, is required to maintain policies that prohibit the unlawful growth, possession, use, …

Applications Of Nanoporous Gold To Drug Release And Glycoscience, Dharmendra Neupane Nov 2020

Applications Of Nanoporous Gold To Drug Release And Glycoscience, Dharmendra Neupane

Dissertations

Nanoporous gold (NPG) is a versatile material because of its three-dimensional nanoscale network, facile surface functionalization, biocompatibility, and potential usage in biotechnology applications. The field of glycoscience is growing in significance as the importance of glycans in human health and disease becomes more fully understood at the molecular level. NPG can be applied to several needs in the field of glycoscience. Our lab has applied NPG to applications in glycoscience including the capture and release of glycoproteins, and the detection of glycoprotein interactions by using either electrochemical methods or localized surface plasmon spectroscopy (LSPR). The capture of glycoproteins onto high …

Northern Giant Hornet (Vespa Mandarinia) And Yellow-Legged Hornet (Vespa Velutina), Potential Pests Of Honey Bees, Benjamin Andrew Powell

Agricultural Education

Exotic hornets present a significant threat to apiculture. Recent introductions of the yellow-legged hornet to Europe and the asian giant hornet to North America have made it critical that regulators, beekeepers and the general public be able to detect and identify these exotic hornets and to understand their biology to minimize the potential impacts to apiculture in South Carolina were they to be introduced.

Bivariate Probit Model For Testing Joint Effect Of Affordability And Desirability To Connect Electricity In Mtwara And Pwani, Tanzania, Amina S. Msengwa, Deogratias Matayo Bengesi Rugaimukamu

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The objective of this study is to determine perceptions of joint effect of affordability and desirability to connect electricity in a household to propose an appropriate advocacy strategy for the regions of Mtwara and Pwani in Tanzania. Bivariate probit model is used to analyse data involving 162 households. Constructed Likert Scales of delightful and wary perceptions on oil- and gas-based on three questions with Likert response formats are used as part of the explanatory set of variables in the model. Marginal mean effects of the bivariate probit model indicate that wary perceptions on the use of gas are statistically significant …

Airborne allergic contact dermatitis (AACD) can be caused by airborne chemicals settling on exposed body parts. Repeated exposure to an allergen can induce AACD in the areas of exposed skin (typically, the face, hands, and forearms).

Case Report: A 67-year-old White woman presented in October 2019 with a 4-month history of severe pruritic facial and hand dermatitis, which began in June or July 2019.

The Masked Demos: Associational Anonymity And Democratic Practice, Jennifer Forestal, Menaka Philips Nov 2020

The Masked Demos: Associational Anonymity And Democratic Practice, Jennifer Forestal, Menaka Philips

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The increased use of anonymous digital platforms raises substantive concerns about accountability in digital spaces. However, contemporary evaluations of anonymity focus too narrowly on its protective function: its ability to protect a diversity of speakers and ideas. Drawing on two examples of anonymous political engagements – Publius’s writing of the Federalist Papers and college students’ use of the social media platform Yik Yak – we develop an account of anonymity’s associational function: the processes by which people generate and negotiate collective identities, discussions, and actions in wider publics. As we argue, anonymity’s associational function can (1) generate conditions under which …

Shedding Light On Sales Relationships: What Effect Does The Sunshine Act Have On Salesperson Ethical Behavior And Customer Response?, Rebecca Burcham Nov 2020

Shedding Light On Sales Relationships: What Effect Does The Sunshine Act Have On Salesperson Ethical Behavior And Customer Response?, Rebecca Burcham

PhD in Business Administration Dissertations

The financial relationship between physicians and pharmaceutical salespeople has long been scrutinized for the potential ethical issues that may arise from the influence that financial incentives have on physician prescribing behavior. Until recently, details of these financial incentives were only available to physicians and salespeople. In order to shed light on this relationship, Congress passed legislation, known as the Sunshine Act, with the intent to make transparent financial information. By shedding light on this information, the legislation’s intent is to mitigate the potential ethical issues that such a financial relationship poses. While previous studies examined the impact that the Sunshine …
