Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (Dise) With Simulation Bite To Predict The Success Of Oral Appliance Therapy In Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea/Hypopnea Syndrome (Osahs), Pietro De Luca

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Oral appliances have gained their place in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) where custom-made titratable mandibular advancement devices (MAD) have become the oral appliance of choice. This study aimed to asses the value of the drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) using a MAD in the prediction of treatment outcome for OSAHS

This is a prospective, single-center cohort study that enrolled sixty-six consecutive patients with diagnosed OSA (5 events/h < apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) < 50 events/h) to be treated with a custom-made titratable MAD. The patients were evaluated polysomnographically with the MAD in situ after the adaptation and titration period of 3 months. The associations between findings during DISE and treatment outcome were assessed.

The subjects showed a wide range of severity of OSAHS pre-treatment: median AHI was 43.10 with a range from 20.13 to 66.07. The simulation bite was associated with a significant increase …

Sars-Cov-2 Infection (Covid-19) Revealed By Persistent Hiccups: A Case Report, Abdelilah Tebay, Oussama Lakhdar, Nouha Tebay

Health Sciences

Hiccups are a ventilatory mechanism involuntarily involving the inspiratory muscles and the glottis, Its physiological interest has not been demonstrated until today. Acute or chronic hiccups have a wide variety of etiologies. We report the case of a 50-year-old patient with a history of iterative sinusitis, who consulted a gastroenterologist for persistent hiccups. The patient's clinical examination was normal. Chest x-ray showing an abnormal mediastinal image leads to a chest CT scan showing a typical picture of COVID-19 virus infection: bilateral and peripheral frosted glass opacities. A nasal swab RT-PCR test confirmed the diagnosis. Admitted to an isolation unit, the …

The Measurement Of Strength In Children: Is The Peak Value Truly Maximal?, H. Ozake, T. Abe, Scott J. Dankel, J. P. Loenneke, T. Natsume, P. Deng, H. Naito

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

It is unclear whether the measurement of maximum muscle strength in younger children can be performed accurately due to factors such as motivation and maturity (i.e., the ability to receive instruction). If there is a large change in a ratio between muscular strength and size from the youngest to the oldest, then this might provide some indication that the youngest may not have been able to voluntarily activate their muscles for reasons mentioned previously. The purpose of this study was to observe the ratio between handgrip strength (HGS) and forearm muscle thickness (MT) across differing ages in younger children. A …

Is There A Difference Between Democrat And Republican States In The Percentage Of Male High School Students Who Physically Fight On Campus?, Anthony Brown, Wayne L. Davis

Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

School violence is a common occurrence in American high schools. Victims of school violence are more likely than others to become depressed, skip school, and commit suicide. In addition, intimidation, threats, sexual harassment, prejudice, gossip, and ridicule are serious threats to successful education. Overall, about 33% of students are bullied at school by other students, and bullying leads to fights. Because Democrats and Republicans support two different types of social learning environments that will modify the behaviors of residents within their respective jurisdictions, and because public safety is an important social issue, it is important to know if there is …

Political Partisanship And Female High School Students Who Carry Handguns, Trenton Cameron, Wayne L. Davis Dec 2020

Political Partisanship And Female High School Students Who Carry Handguns, Trenton Cameron, Wayne L. Davis

Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The United States is a gun culture nation, and gun violence is a serious problem. Because there are more than 280 million guns in America with over 65 million handguns in circulation, the Republicans believe that there are too many guns in America to prevent criminals from illegally obtaining them. In addition, only law-abiding residents will honor gun-control laws. As a result, law-abiding residents will become defenseless, which will promote crime. Democrats, on the other hand, believe that the gun-related crime problem will never be solved until actions are taken to eliminate the availability of handguns. After all, it is …

© 2020 by the authors. Li-censee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a crucial starting point in disease man-agement. Blood-based biomarkers could represent a considerable advantage in providing AD-risk information in primary care settings. Here, we report new data for a relatively unknown blood-based biomarker that holds promise for AD diagnosis. We evaluate a p53-misfolding conformation rec-ognized by the antibody 2D3A8, also named Unfolded p53 (U-p532D3A8+), in 375 plasma samples derived from InveCe.Ab and PharmaCog/E-ADNI longitudinal studies. A machine learning approach is used to combine U-p532D3A8+ plasma levels with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and apolipoprotein E …

Digital Humanities At Cuny. Building Communities Of Practice In The Public University, Stefano Morello

Publications and Research

In this essay, I reflect on my experience working in the field of Digital Humanities at The Graduate Center (GC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) to refute the misconception that the point of intersection of humanities and computation is dependent on robust technological infrastructure and, therefore, outside of the reach of underfunded public institutions. On the contrary, my tenure as a GC Digital Fellow suggests that the development of DH communities of practice can be an especially valuable asset for public universities, due to the waterfall effect they can produce for both the academic and the local …

Design Guidelines Of Outdoor Urban Open Tourist Places., Talal Hammadi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The Design process of tourist places in Saudi Arabia is not so adequate to maximize their potential use, for both people and the wider environment. Many planned and designed outdoor areas were inadequately designed to satisfy local user needs, because of that many social and environmental problems have resulted from such unsystematic or unscientific planning and design, which were not carried out by professional environmental designers or landscape architects, Over the past seven decades, landscape design process of green urban open spaces and tourist areas have developed rapidly in many countries, while in some, the process can be considered as …

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

Since genetic engineering of pigs can benefit both biomedicine and agriculture, selecting a suitable gene promoter is critically important. The cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter, which can robustly drive ubiquitous transgene expression, is commonly used at present, yet recent reports suggest tissue-specific activity in the pig. The objective of this study was to quantify ZsGreen1 protein (in lieu of CMV promoter activity) in tissues from pigs harboring a CMV-ZsGreen1 transgene with a single integration site. Tissue samples (

Pso-Elm Prediction Model For Surface Deformation Of Mine Slope, Ning Yongxiang, Cui Ximin Dec 2020

Pso-Elm Prediction Model For Surface Deformation Of Mine Slope, Ning Yongxiang, Cui Ximin

Coal Geology & Exploration

During the excavation of the roadway, using reflected in-seam waves detection technique to explore the structure of roadway and accurately interpret the wave impedance interface is of signality for mine production. The method of detecting the position of faults by reflected in-seam waves is usually inaccurate, which is mainly caused by the selected deviation of reflected in-seam waves velocity. In order to reduce the selected deviation of reflected in-seam waves velocity, this paper analyzed the features of reflected in-seam waves velocity of fifteen coal seam in thirteen coal mines and the velocity relationships of reflected in-seam waves, direct in-seam waves …

Crisis Standards Of Care And State Liability Shields, Valerie Gutmann Koch

San Diego Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed many U.S. systems—including the already-strained medical system—intended to protect and care for its citizens. In the United States, New York became the first epicenter of the pandemic, accounting for approximately five percent of global COVID-19 cases by March 2020. Hospitals, health care providers, and policymakers soon recognized that, in New York and beyond, they faced a bleak reality that—if the spread of the virus could not be controlled—there would soon not be enough ventilators for all patients who needed them, despite hospitals practicing “surge capacity” to reduce the need for ventilators by canceling or postponing …

Cardiology Articles

BACKGROUND: Unlike β(1)- and β(2)-adrenergic receptors (ARs), β(3)-AR stimulation inhibits cardiac contractility and relaxation. In the failing left ventricular (LV) myocardium, β(3)-ARs are upregulated, and can be maladaptive in the setting of decompensation by contributing to LV dysfunction. This study examined the effects of intravenous (i.v.) infusions of the β(3)-AR antagonist APD418 on cardiovascular function and safety in dogs with systolic heart failure (HF).

METHODS AND RESULTS: Three separate studies were performed in 21 dogs with coronary microembolization-induced HF (LV ejection fraction [LVEF] of approximately 35%). Studies 1 and 2 (n = 7 dogs each) were APD418 dose escalation studies …

Master's Theses

The purpose of this research is to argue that U.S. immigration policy, specifically the 1996 IIRIRA (also known as IIRAIRA), needs to change regarding the legal treatment of immigrant U.S. military veteran deportees due to the following concepts. The first concept is to articulate how the criminalization of immigration, and how the military system intersects to facilitate the Deportation of U.S veterans. A key concept in this analysis is the standard of “good moral character” set by the U.S. government that enlistees need to meet to be accepted into the military; this standard is also used against immigrant veterans during …
