Metta, Mudita, And Metal: Dhamma Instruments In Burmese Buddhism, Gavin D. Douglas
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Bells, gongs, and other dhamma instruments offer valuable insights into the role of sound in Buddhist practice. Participation in musical events in the Theravada Buddhist world is deemed inappropriate for devote laity and for those who have taken monastic vows. The seventh Buddhist precept implores monks “to abstain from dancing, singing, and music,” yet Buddhist monasteries and pagodas are sonically vibrant places that contain a wide variety of layered bells, gongs, chants, and prayers sculpting the sonic environment. This study examines the soundscape of Burmese Buddhist social space and argues that these sounds are essential to understanding the lived practice …
Sex-Selective Abortions: The Prevalence In India And Its Ramifications On Sex Trafficking, Vivek P. Thomas
Sex-Selective Abortions: The Prevalence In India And Its Ramifications On Sex Trafficking, Vivek P. Thomas
The Compass
Sex-selective abortion is a practice involving the prenatal preference of males over females. Prior to the availability of ultrasound technology, this preference led to the abandonment or murder of female infants. However, with the increase in availability of ultrasound technology and the corresponding advance knowledge of the fetus’ sex, the ability to perform selective abortions was introduced. The concept of sex-selective abortion can be viewed through the lens of sex ratio at birth. The natural sex ratio is about 102-106 males to 100 females.1 However, the Indian cultural preference for males over females translates into a disproportionate sex ratio, in …

System And Method For Predicting Hardware Failures Of Electronic Devices Using Onboard Sensors And Device Lifecycle Data, Dmitry Goloubew, Shi-Jie Wen, James Turman, Sumit Parimoo
Defensive Publications Series
Techniques herein provide a capability to predict failures of hardware by using onboard sensors and provide for the ability to move from detection to prediction for hardware failures. In turn, such techniques can help to reduce downtime due to marginal hardware and improves network availability. The techniques can also help to reduce unnecessary maintenance and changes related to replacing hardware that has not failed, which can lead to business efficiencies for both customers and vendors and may become even more important in a Network-As-A-Service (NAAS) context in which both sides are paid by the vendor.
