Opportunities And Barriers To Business Engagement In The Uk Domestic Retrofit Sector: An Industry Perspective, B Butt, Rv Jones, A Fuertes
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper investigates the opportunities and barriers to business engagement in the UK domestic retrofit sector. There are approximately 28 million UK dwellings accounting for 30% of UK total energy consumption. Almost all of the existing housing stock will require some form of retrofit in order to meet the UK Government’s Net Zero emissions target by 2050. However, adoption has been much lower than required. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with industry professionals to investigate the key barriers and opportunities for businesses in the retrofit market. The results suggest that there is significant opportunity for businesses, but engagement has been suppressed …

The Use Of Tlr Ligands And Phytochemicals To Better Understand Gut Immunity In Zebrafish And Channel Catfish, Ann Elizabeth Peterman
The Use Of Tlr Ligands And Phytochemicals To Better Understand Gut Immunity In Zebrafish And Channel Catfish, Ann Elizabeth Peterman
Theses and Dissertations
Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands and phytochemical feed additives (PFAs) were evaluated in this study to determine the effects of immune stimulation on gut immunity in the zebrafish, Danio rerio, and the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. Rag1-/- (MT) zebrafish were used to study how the TLR ligands β-glucan and resiquimod (R848) affect the innate immune system in the gut of MT zebrafish. Enhanced expression of marker genes (NITR9, NCCRP-1 and MPEG-1) indicated stimulation of Natural Killer (NK) cells, non-specific cytotoxic cells (NCCs) and macrophages. After challenge with Edwardsiella ictaluri, MT zebrafish stimulated with β-glucan demonstrated higher survival and the presence of …

Non-Conventional Sensors For Measuring Partial Discharge Under Dc Electrical Stress, Mojtaba Rostaghihalaki
Non-Conventional Sensors For Measuring Partial Discharge Under Dc Electrical Stress, Mojtaba Rostaghihalaki
Theses and Dissertations
Partial discharge (PD) is a micro discharge that occurs in defected regions within the insulating media. As these discharges are the main culprits that cause dielectric material aging, PD measurements have been used for assessing insulating materials, including solids, liquids, and gases for power applications. There are various methods and sensors available for measuring PD sensitive to specific characteristics and operable over a wide range of frequencies. Most PD measurement techniques provide patterns that enable PD interpretation more comfortable for users. For example, in AC applications, the phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) technique provides identifiable patterns for distinguishing various types of …
Hemp Fiber – An Environmentally Friendly Fiber For Concrete Reinforcement, Brian Giltner
Hemp Fiber – An Environmentally Friendly Fiber For Concrete Reinforcement, Brian Giltner
Theses and Dissertations
The commercial use of hemp fiber in the construction industry within the United States is non-existent. This lack of use is because of State and Federal laws forbidding the growth of hemp in the United States, which has led to a lack of research. Not having an established supply chain for hemp and coupled with limited research has put the United States behind other countries in finding viable options for these renewable resources. This is a study of the performance of raw hemp fibers and processed hemp twine in a cement past mixture subjected to tensile loading. Three water/cement ratios …

Despite our understanding of the impact of noise-induced damage to the auditory system, much less is known about the impact of noise exposure on the vestibular system. In this article, we review the anatomical, physiological, and functional evidence for noise-induced damage to peripheral and central vestibular structures. Morphological studies in several animal models have demonstrated cellular damage throughout the peripheral vestibular system and particularly in the otolith organs; however, there is a paucity of data on the effect of noise exposure on human vestibular end organs. Physiological studies have corroborated morphological studies by demonstrating disruption across vestibular pathways with otolith-mediated …

Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of nanomaterials of the carbon family with unique characteristics, such as their small size (e.g., <10 nm), high water solubility, low toxicity, and high metal affinity. Modification of CDs by Nitrogen functional groups (N-CDs) enhances their metal adsorption capacity. This study investigated the influences of pH (4, 6, and 9), ionic strength (1, 50, and 100 mM), and cation valency (Na+ and Ca2+) on the competitive adsorption of Pb to quartz and N-CD surfaces, the transport and retention of N-CDs in saturated porous media, and the capacity of N-CDs to mobilize pre-adsorbed Pb in quartz columns. Pb adsorption was higher on N-CDs than on quartz surfaces and decreased with increases in ionic strength (IS) and divalent cations (Ca2+) concentration. N-CD mobility in quartz columns was highest at pH of 9- and 1-mM monovalent cations …10>

Social Housing And The Affordability Crisis: A Study Of The Effectiveness Of French And American Social Housing Systems In Meeting The Increasing Demand For Affordable Housing, Claire Sullivan
Honors Theses
The demand for affordable housing across OECD countries has sky-rocketed as the number of those cost-burdened by housing continues to increase each year. Social housing has been the traditional means by which governments have provided affordable housing to citizens, however in recent years the social housing systems of many countries have been strained to meet the rising demand for affordable housing. While this has consistently been an area of concern for major metropolitan areas, areas outside of cities are being impacted by the lack of affordable housing, as well.
This study seeks to address the impact of social housing systems …
Cognition In Health And Disease: Two Mouse Model Studies, Heather Lynn Mahoney
Cognition In Health And Disease: Two Mouse Model Studies, Heather Lynn Mahoney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive and circadian dysfunction are common aspects of neuropsychiatric disease that are often overlooked in disease models and treatment strategies. In this work, we first evaluated the potential for cognitive enhancement in healthy adult mice by targeting a kinase involved in regulation of the molecular circadian clock. We then developed and characterized a model of neuropsychiatric disease that could present a target for rescuing circadian and cognitive deficits using this treatment.
Time-of-day effects have been noted in a wide variety of cognitive behavioral tests, and perturbation of circadian rhythms impairs hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. We first asked whether casein kinase …
Operating At The Edge Of Il/Legality: Systemic Corruption In Mexican Health Care, Rosalynn A. Vega, A. Paulo Maya
Operating At The Edge Of Il/Legality: Systemic Corruption In Mexican Health Care, Rosalynn A. Vega, A. Paulo Maya
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Through a series of ethnographic vignettes, this article examines how providers contribute to corruption in Mexican health care, how providers are themselves subjected to logics of corruption, and the relationship between patients’ and providers’ vulnerability within contexts of resource scarcity. Doctors, faced with insecure salaries due to nonpayment of wages by the government, collude with hospital staff to sell state drugs on the black market. Meanwhile, vulnerable patients are used as teaching opportunities for private school students—with horrifying, and fatal, effects. Palancas (“favors” granted by colleagues and higher-ups to individuals with less authority) and exclusive treatment of recomendados (patients given …

Thou Shall Not Steal: Assessing Demographic And Neighborhood Predictors Of Shoplifting Through The Lens Of Social Disorganization Theory, Christina Loftin
Thou Shall Not Steal: Assessing Demographic And Neighborhood Predictors Of Shoplifting Through The Lens Of Social Disorganization Theory, Christina Loftin
Theses and Dissertations
The crime of shoplifting has received limited scholarly attention despite millions of shoplifting arrests that occur every year. Our understanding of shoplifting is limited because of this. This study assesses whether offenders arrested for shoplifting that reside in socially disorganized neighborhoods differ from their counterparts from less socially disorganized neighborhoods. Using arrest data from the Meridian Police Department and secondary data from the 2018 American Community Survey, analyses revealed that arrestees from neighborhoods with high levels of poverty were more likely to shoplift from dollar stores, liquor stores, and convenience stores. Demographic findings revealed few gender differences in shoplifting among …
