Functional Kernel Density Estimation: Point And Fourier Approaches To Time Series Anomaly Detection, Michael R. Lindstrom, Hyuntae Jung, Denis Larocque Nov 2020

Functional Kernel Density Estimation: Point And Fourier Approaches To Time Series Anomaly Detection, Michael R. Lindstrom, Hyuntae Jung, Denis Larocque

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We present an unsupervised method to detect anomalous time series among a collection of time series. To do so, we extend traditional Kernel Density Estimation for estimating probability distributions in Euclidean space to Hilbert spaces. The estimated probability densities we derive can be obtained formally through treating each series as a point in a Hilbert space, placing a kernel at those points, and summing the kernels (a “point approach”), or through using Kernel Density Estimation to approximate the distributions of Fourier mode coefficients to infer a probability density (a “Fourier approach”). We refer to these approaches as Functional Kernel Density …

South Texas is located in a subtropical semiarid climate, and due to high temperature and irregular precipitation, farmers opt to leave their fields fallow during the summer months jeopardizing overall soil health. We evaluated whether sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivation coupled with drip irrigation could restore soil biological activities compared with bare fallow. Additionally, because sweet potatoes have high demand of soil nutrients, especially potassium (K), we evaluated the nutrient supply of locally sourced soil amendments. Sweet potato was cultivated during summer 2018 in McAllen, Texas, under control (no fertilizer), NPK (synthetic fertilizer), RC (yard-waste compost), and AC (compost produced …

The Technology Fast: Transformational Learning As Changes In Behavior And Perception Beyond The Classroom, Daniel Burton Shank, Nathan Shank, Mallory North

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Digital technology has become an integral, if not overwhelming, part of many people’s lives. As the use and pervasiveness of technology has increased, the popularity of taking a sabbath from it has also increased. In this paper we ask if and how a technology fast assignment influences students’ lives beyond the classroom. Transformative learning, supported by active and experiential learning, suggests that in order for students to reap the greatest benefits of education, learning must influence perceptions and behavior outside of the class environment. In two semesters of “Human-Computer Interaction” classes, students were assigned a technology fast in which they …

Reforming And Strengthening The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention: Five Key Reforms To Renew The Agency’S Stature And Effectiveness, Lawrence O. Gostin, Sandro Galea

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the world’s leading public health agency, so admired that whole regions and countries have borrowed its name—in Africa, Europe, even China. In past epidemics, CDC’s expertise was transformative, such as in AIDS, Ebola, Zika, and Influenza H1N1. If there ever were a moment for the CDC to show leadership domestically and globally, it was the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the CDC’s stature was diminished—not enhanced—in an administration that not only eschewed science and politically pressured the CDC, but also gave notice of withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), where CDC …

This study aims to analyze English debaters’ learning strategies in improving their debate skills. The researcher used descriptive qualitative in the form of in depth interview in which three successful English debaters were involved in this study. The result reveals that debaters habituate themselves to read a lot, watch debate videos and practice by using a wide variety of language learning strategies. Those strategies are seeking practice opportunity, using resources, overviewing materials, asking for correction, using synonym or circumlocution, self-evaluating, practicing naturalistically, taking note, summarizing, using progressive relaxation, deep breathing or meditation and cooperation with peers.
