Voluntary Simplicity: An Exploration Through Text Analysis, Apollo Demierel
Voluntary Simplicity: An Exploration Through Text Analysis, Apollo Demierel
Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship
Overconsumption poses severe ethical problems and causes harm to the environment. Today many individuals change their consumption practices and actively limit their overall consumption due to ethical and environmental concerns. This article focuses on voluntary simplicity, a sustainable lifestyle phenomenon that comprises environment-friendly consumption practices as an innate characteristic. This paper offers a fresh and nuanced understanding of voluntary simplicity through the lens of social cognitive theory (SCT) and by examining textual content generated by voluntary simplifiers on Facebook. Five thousand three hundred thirty-six Facebook posts and comments were scrapped and examined using sentiment analysis, associative networks and cluster analysis. …
Mental Health In U.S. Schools: Problems, Interventions, And Future Directions, Emma Rumpf-Snavely
Mental Health In U.S. Schools: Problems, Interventions, And Future Directions, Emma Rumpf-Snavely
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
The psychological well-being of American children has been a concern due to the rise in mental health issues. Efforts have been made to tackle some of the issues that are most prevalent among youth such as stress, depression, bullying, substance abuse, suicide and self-harm. Attempted solutions include legislation at the state level, school-wide regulations, and individualized supports. Despite these efforts, there are still discrepancies with implementation and regulation of policies and programs. These inconsistencies have resulted in the continual decline in the mental health of American youth. The United States can gain a more focused direction for their mental health …

Popular Sovereignty And The Doctrine Of Plenary State Legislative Power, Nina Neff
Popular Sovereignty And The Doctrine Of Plenary State Legislative Power, Nina Neff
William & Mary Law Review Online
Unlike the federal legislature, state legislatures possess plenary power, except insofar as they are limited by state constitutions. Though state plenary power is rooted in the legal authority of popular sovereignty, the doctrine of plenary state legislative power dulls democratic power by eliminating a potential right to local self-governance and by inducing courts to underenforce constitutional limits on state legislatures. These trends do not square with our democratic intuitions or with our desire to have a sense of efficacy, energy, and power in our own ability to influence the laws of our communities. This Article suggests that the doctrine of …

Optimal Adjustment Of The Human Circadian Clock In The Real World, Samuel Christensen, Yitong Huang, Olivia J. Walch, Daniel B. Forger
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Which suggestions for behavioral modifications, based on mathematical models, are most likely to be followed in the real world? We address this question in the context of human circadian rhythms. Jet lag is a consequence of the misalignment of the body’s internal circadian (~24-hour) clock during an adjustment to a new schedule. Light is the clock’s primary synchronizer. Previous research has used mathematical models to compute light schedules that shift the circadian clock to a new time zone as quickly as possible. How users adjust their behavior when provided with these optimal schedules remains an open question. Here, we report …
Beyond Wildlife Crime: Towards The Concept Of ‘Mundane Fauna Crime’, Orlando Goodall
Beyond Wildlife Crime: Towards The Concept Of ‘Mundane Fauna Crime’, Orlando Goodall
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Research and theorisation on crimes against non-human species in rural regions have been conducted with less conceptual refinement than crimes against anthropocentric victims. The dominant conception of ‘wildlife crime’ predominantly advanced by the rational choice school of criminology is a nebulous ‘chaotic concept’. This article disaggregates crimes against common and relatively abundant species from that capacious categorisation and offers the original concept of ‘mundane fauna crime’ as a more precise alternative. The original concept aims to supersede the wildlife crime terminology using realist social relations theory and to offer researchers a rational abstraction to advance aetiological explanations. The additional category …

Non-Contact Point Measuring Equipment For Robotic Systems Of Automobile Industry, J Khollhujayev, N Abdukarimov, J Mavlonov, N Abdivahidova
Technical science and innovation
The non-contact measurement method development is caused by the need for precise measurement and elimination of an operator’s errors. The purpose of the atticle research is to develop a reliable small scale prototype model of non-contact point measuring system. The mathematical model of robotic articulated arm has been developed to analyze the forward kinematics. Then, the prototype model of a robotic arm and laser-sensor mounted technique have been developed to take the measurements. The idea was derived from the coordinate measuring machine working principle, that puts the tip or tool center point in the known position with necessary precision. Most …

Arsenic, a toxic chemical element, is detrimental to environment and human health in particular. Therefore, the development of simple, fast, and accurate arsenic ion (As3+) detection methods has attracted extensive attention. In this work, an electrochemical sensor based on molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) and nano-porous gold (NPG) modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (MIP/NPG/ITO) was developed for determination of As3+ in water with different quality. NPG with high conductivity, large specific surface area and high biocompatibility was prepared in situ on ITO surface by a green electrodeposition method using simple and controllable steps. Then, a layer of …

A Method For Classifying Ecg Signals With Different Possible States On A Multilayer Perceptron, Sherzod Nematov, Y Talatov
Technical science and innovation
To automatically determine the state of the cardiovascular system based on the recorded ECG signals, an artificial neural network is trained to classify signals into various possible states. At the same time, the parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) were extracted from the ECG signals and used as input functions for the neural network. HRV is the fluctuation in the time intervals between adjacent heartbeats. For this, the architecture of a neural network based on a multilayer perceptron and a method for obtaining the necessary parameters in the learning process have been developed, and the classification efficiency has been checked …

For more than ten years, new synthetic cathinones (SCs) mimicking the effects of controlled cocaine-like stimulants have flooded the illegal drug market, causing numerous intoxications and fatalities. There are often no data on the pharmacokinetics of these substances when they first emerge onto the market. However, the detection of SC metabolites is often critical in order to prove consumption in clinical and forensic settings. In this research, the metabolite profile of two pyrrolidinyl SCs, α-pyrrolidinohexaphenone (α-PHP) and 4''-fluoro-α-pyrrolidinovalerophenone (4F-α-PVP), were characterized to identify optimal intake markers. Experiments were conducted using pooled human hepatocyte incubations followed by liquid chromatography-high-resolution tandem mass …

Despite decades of research, we lack a mechanistic framework capable of predicting how movement-related signals are transformed into the diversity of muscle spindle afferent firing patterns observed experimentally, particularly in naturalistic behaviors. Here, a biophysical model demonstrates that well-known firing characteristics of mammalian muscle spindle Ia afferents – including movement history dependence, and nonlinear scaling with muscle stretch velocity – emerge from first principles of muscle contractile mechanics. Further, mechanical interactions of the muscle spindle with muscle-tendon dynamics reveal how motor commands to the muscle (alpha drive) versus muscle spindle (gamma drive) can cause highly variable and complex activity during …

Crisis response is a clear illustration of what Migdal (2004) posits in his Statein-society approach: the iterative relationship between State authority and social actors' everyday practices. As the rise in recent natural and humanmade disasters call for proficiencies in crisis response, it becomes essential to observe how the variabilities in State-in-society responses unfold through institutionally coordinated everyday social relations. The situation reveals the need to theorize these relationships on the grounds of the dynamic coconstitution of State-in-society. This study employed institutional ethnography (Devault & McCoy, 2002; Smith, 2005); observing the interplay of various actors' interests and strategies within institutional processes …

A long‐standing problem in biology is how to dissect traits for which no tractable model exists. Here, we screen for genes like the nude locus (Foxn1)—genes central to mammalian hair and thymus development—using animals that never evolved hair, thymi, or Foxn1. Fruit flies are morphologically disrupted by the FOXN1 transcription factor and rescued by weak reductions in fly gene function, revealing molecules that potently synergize with FOXN1 to effect dramatic, chaotic change. Strong synergy/effectivity in flies is expected to reflect strong selection/functionality (purpose) in mammals; the more disruptive a molecular interaction is in alien contexts (flies), the more beneficial it …

Impact Of Psychoeducation Program On Turkish Students' Negative Attitudes Towards Refugee Peers, Ali Çekiç, Zeynep Hamamcı
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
About 26% of the Syrian population in Turkey is made up of school-age children. In the 2017–2018 academic year, 608,000 Syrian students enrolled in the education system, and 50% attended temporary education centers established for only Syrian students, while the other half attended public schools with their Turkish peers. One of the main factors that complicate the adaptation process of Syrian refugee students who have come to a different culture and have been placed in a foreign education system is the discriminatory attitudes from the locals’ prejudices. Thus, in this study, a five-week psychoeducation program was developed and implemented by …
