Low Cognitive Function Is Associated With Reduced Functional Fitness Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Michelle Gray, Joshua Gills, Jordan Glenn, Erica Madero, Aidan Hall, Nami Fuseya, Jennifer Vincenzo, Nick Bott
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Faculty Publications and Presentations
Among older adults over 70, 22-30% report difficulty performing at least one activity of daily living (ADL). While the precipitants of ADL decline are multifactorial, over 50% of cognitively impaired adults require assistance with ADLs. The exact relationship between cognitive and functional decline remains unknown, but it is important to understand their relationship. Eighty-three older adults (80.9 + 5.4 years) enrolled in this study and completed functional fitness and cognitive assessments. Functional fitness assessments included: Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 10-meter walk, dual-task, and power chair stand (average and peak). Cognition was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and …

Hepatitis, a condition of liver’s inflammation that can be self-limiting or, in certain chances, it may lead to liver cancer, fibrosis or cirrhosis. Hepatitis viruses mainly cause hepatitis in the world. People with hepatitis C have predominant chances to develop diabetes as HCV virus participates in causing type 2 diabetes. HCV virus causes pathogenesis in two ways: it either directly destroys the β cells of pancreas or contributes to the specific autoimmunity of β cells. The present cross sectional study was done in Wazirabad Tahsil of Gujranwala District to analyze the percentage of patients suffering from hepatitis C who had …

Stopping Power And Range Calculations Of Protons In Human Tissues, Iftekhar Ahmed, Hridita Nowrin, Hriday Dhar
Baghdad Science Journal
In this research, the stopping power and range of protons in biological human soft and hard tissues (blood, brain, skeleton-cortical bone, and skin) of both child and adult are calculated at the energies ranging from 1MeV to 350 MeV. The data is collected from ICRU Report 46 and calculated the stopping power employing the Bethe formula. Moreover, the simple integration (continuous slowing down approximation) method is employed for calculating protons range at the target. Then, the stopping power and range of protons value in human tissues have been compared with the program called SRIM. Moreover, the results of the stopping …

Immersion Pedagogy For Ignatian Leadership: The Creighton Haddix Dean’S Fellows, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen
Immersion Pedagogy For Ignatian Leadership: The Creighton Haddix Dean’S Fellows, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
There are times and places where learning can be heightened. The proliferation of high-impact pedagogies attests to this. International immersions, done with intentionality, reflection, and follow-up, can be times and places where theories and concepts move from the abstract to the real. Immersion experiences in poor and marginalized communities are also where Ignatian leadership can be understood more profoundly, largely because of the values and commitments of Ignatius of Loyola and the spirituality that emerged from his life.

Ignatian Leadership In The Undergraduate Curriculum And Classroom, Erika L. Dakin Kirby
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This article: (a) describes the (Ignatian) Leadership Minor structure and curriculum for undergraduates at Creighton and (b) suggests how to embed principles of Ignatian leadership into undergraduate classrooms whether or not “leadership” is the explicit focus. First, I explain how the Leadership Minor was created specifically to embrace Ignatian Leadership and describe the required courses in terms of their learning objectives and related assignments. Second, I illustrate how principles of Ignatian leadership could be used in other undergraduate classrooms, offering additional units including Ignatian Charisms, the Examen, Downward Mobility/Living Simply, and Discernment that includes a “Personal Manifesto” based on Pedro …

Ignatian-Centered And Appreciative Advising: Supporting The Holistic Development Of Students In 15-Minute Intervals, Joseph Defeo Ph.D., Bridget Keegan Ph.D.
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Abstract
Ignatian pedagogy offers a powerful vision and methodology for learning and for life. The majority of work devoted to Ignatian pedagogy focuses on its integration into the traditional curriculum and classroom. However, as many educators are aware, learning, reflection, and self-discovery continue after and between courses and class meetings. Here the role of the faculty or staff advisor is essential, providing continuity and longer-term accompaniment for the student over the course of his or her educational career. This essay examines how Ignatian pedagogy builds upon and enhances secular theories of advising and how Ignatian pedagogy can inform advising relationships. …
Ignatian Leadership And The Contemporary Leadership Landscape An Exercise In Counter-Cultural Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen
Ignatian Leadership And The Contemporary Leadership Landscape An Exercise In Counter-Cultural Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This paper is written as a dialogue between two faculty members and scholars working within a Jesuit institution. Through their shared interest in leadership, especially an interest in Ignatian Leadership, the following dialogue has emerged. Kelly works in our institution as a theologian and former director of academic service-learning, and Moss-Breen works in the graduate school directing an interdisciplinary leadership EdD program. Their backgrounds and fields are different, but their interest in the leadership of Ignatius is a common thread between them. Kelly starts the conversation and Moss Breen responds in kind.

New Faculty Perspectives In A Jesuit Institution Amidst Unprecedented Challenges, Cassandra Stroup, T.J. Sayre, Allyson L. Spence
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
The struggles and stressors that new faculty members face has been well documented, but during our first year at a Jesuit institution, we encountered unexpected, unprecedented challenges. Fortunately, we developed a unique sense of community as new faculty stemming from Regis University’s Manresa Experience. The Manresa Experience exposed us to Jesuit Values, provided networking opportunities with colleagues, and introduced a togetherness that would help unite us against two unforgiving viruses. The first virus plagued Regis University in Fall 2019, when a cyberattack crippled our entire network security. As new faculty members, we were unable to utilize valuable resources that would …
Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray
Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In An Ignatian Method of City Dwelling (2011) John M. Staudenmaier, SJ notes that “Ignatius teaches that prayer is geographical at its core.” On his own journey of leadership, Ignatius himself learned much about the lives of others, and of himself, through the particular places he visited (often for much longer than he intended). By focusing on a specific geography, place-based community engagement can foster Ignatian leadership as it encourages faculty, staff and students to journey with a community in their own home. Because this unique way of engaging the community emphasizes depth of engagement over breadth, it is …

A vast majority of academic disciplines and curricula in the college center around Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which are critical to developing the skills necessary for a global workforce. Rapid changes in pedagogical setups, educational modes, and advances in instructional technology entail diverse challenges for key stakeholders (i.e. students, faculty, and the organizations). This paper highlights the most relevant challenges and potential solutions in STEM higher education at the college level, reported in the last decade. The holistic analysis combining the three stakeholders’ perspectives would help elucidate significant contemporary aspects impacting the fields. The goal is to further …

Seldom has the site for a city been deliberately selected, less often has it been chosen in a wilderness, and scarcely ever has a capital been so placed not only many miles from any settlement but far from any single habitation of civilized man. Yet thus it was with Tallahassee when its site was chosen for the seat of government of the Territory of Florida and as the permanent home of its wandering Council.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has redefined the manner in which those seeking advanced degrees will succeed in the academic arena. Due to the effectiveness of learning in the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom, a certain sense of complacency exists but suddenly, learners are forced to alter that established learning path and arrive at new methods of acquiring information. Alongside the COVID-19 attack, the modern era of academia calls for the need and desire to learn in online, distance education learning programs. Long distance teaching programs are designed to rely upon the abilities of technology to facilitate effective communication as well as the sharing of …

Old Pictures Of The New Florida: Ponce De Leon And His Land, Benjamin Harrison
Florida Historical Quarterly
The discoverers of a new world are accepted as among the boldest and shrewdest men, with very few exceptions; it is the misfortune of Florida that her history is made to begin in popular conception, with her discovery by an old man, who foolishly sought here a renewed youth, that he might gain the love of a young girl. But Ponce stood high among the soldiers and statesmen of Spain, because of the services already given. When he received permission to seek and govern a new land, he was only in the maturity of mental and physical vigor, and if …

Every family of mankind refers fondly to a Golden Age, when peace and innocence reigned on earth. The lost paradise is no monopoly of the Christian, of the Greek or even of the Old World, since the Inca and the Aztec were equally confident in the truth of his traditions describing it. When Columbus compared the happy conditions he observed in the islands to which he came, with those of Europe, he declared the inhabitants were close to the angels in disposition as well as in geography, and he confidently looked for his Blessed Mountain in all his wanderings. When …

Cold in death is the heart so long attuned to suffering's call, friendship's genial mingling, and love's devotion. Ail that a prodigal nature gave in a noble, generous and gentle heart, with enchanting face and form, of almost perennial youth and loveliness, is lost to us, and how can we do without her in a world where such are so few? For more than forty years the subject of this sketch had lived in Florida, having removed to the Territory from the State of Virginia not very long after the "Exchange of Flags," which made it the property of the …

Music is a vehicle of capturing an individual’s experiences: a new beginning, a broken heart, complete joy, and even catharsis. Before deciding to embark on my path in medicine, music was my interest. Creating music is my therapeutic method of relieving stress, providing a productive outlet when coping with my stressors, and allowing me to focus on becoming a better student doctor. It has carried me through tough times and continues to do so. This instrumental song I wrote represents how I felt as a second-year medical student going through the COVID-19 pandemic; from being isolated in a state away …
