Advanced technologies in location acquisition allow us to track the movement of moving objects (people, planes, vehicles, animals, ships, ..) in geographical space. These technologies generate a vast amount of trajectory data (TD). Several applica- tions in different fields can utilize such trajectory data, for example, traffic control management, social behavior analysis, wildlife migrations and movements, ship tra- jectories, shoppers behavior in a mall, facial nerve trajectory, location-based services (LBS) and many others. Fortunately, there are now many trajectory data sets avail- able that collected from moving objects such as cars with enabled GPS devices. Two main challenges arise when …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Breast tall cell carcinoma with reversed polarity (TCCRP) is rare and previously referred to as solid papillary carcinoma with reverse polarity. This low grade tumor commonly exhibits IDH2 p.Arg172 mutation, however is not completely understood at the molecular level. We present a case of TCCRP in a 55 year old woman with a 0.7 cm left breast mass. A core biopsy was performed with immunohistochemistry. Lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy were completed two months later. MammaPrint R© and BluePrint R© gene expression profilers were performed on an excision block. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of circumscribed nests of columnar …
The Utilization Of Close Observation In Acute Psychiatric Inpatients, Sean Farley
The Utilization Of Close Observation In Acute Psychiatric Inpatients, Sean Farley
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Close observation is a psychiatric interventional method implemented for individuals who are displaying self-injurious or aggressive behaviors. This is a widely used intervention within the field of mental health Close observation is also regulated by The Joint Commission and the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services for accreditation purposes. A review of the current literature was conducted and revealed that frequently psychiatric patients are placed on inappropriate levels of close observation, that revisions to the close observation policy/practice improve both psychiatric patients and staff safety outcomes, and can overall decrease hospital costs associated with observation intervention. The purpose of this …

Implementation Of Nudges At A Food Pantry In Anchorage, Alaska, Kiana Holland
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Food pantry clients experience many health disparities, including elevated incidence of diabetes, heart disease, and other nutrition-related conditions. Nutrition education interventions in the form of a nudge can be an effective method to increase nutrition knowledge and to positively influence nutrition-related behaviors and attitudes surrounding healthful eating. Attitudes refer to the emotions, or beliefs towards something, whereas behaviors are the actions taken. The goal of this project was to develop a nutrition intervention in the form of a nudge to increase the selection of nutritious foods by pantry clients. Objectives included creating a guidebook for the pantry to utilize when …

Inherited muscle disorders are caused by pathogenic changes in numerous genes. Herein, we aimed to investigate the etiology of muscle disease in 24 consecutive Greek patients with myopathy suspected to be genetic in origin, based on clinical presentation and laboratory and electrophysiological findings and absence of known acquired causes of myopathy. Of these, 16 patients (8 females, median 24 years-old, range 7 to 67 years-old) were diagnosed by Whole Exome Sequencing as suffering from a specific type of inherited muscle disorder. Specifically, we have identified causative variants in 6 limb-girdle muscular dystrophy genes (6 patients; ANO5, CAPN3, DYSF, ISPD, LAMA2, …

International Travel: A Quantitative And Qualitative Analysis About How Study Abroad Opportunities Enhance One’S Global Perspective And Self-Awareness, Kristen Zink
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
As the world is becoming more interconnected, the importance of having a well-rounded, global education is necessary. To meet those needs, many students are electing to study abroad during their time in college. Although research has been done to examine the direct benefits of studying abroad, there has been little research done to differentiate the impacts of short-term and long-term study abroad. This research looked at how students reflected on both their short-term and long-term study abroad experiences and it examined the benefits of both lengths of travel. A quantitative analysis was done to analyze the benefits of short-term study …

Endocrinology Articles
With the availability of second-generation basal insulin analogs, insulin degludec (100 and 200 units/ml [degludec]) and insulin glargine 300 units/ml (glargine U300), clinicians now have long-acting, efficacious treatment options with stable pharmacokinetic profiles and associated low risks of hypoglycemia that may be desirable for many patients with type 2 diabetes. In this narrative review, we summarize the current evidence on glycemic control in hospitalized patients and review the pharmacokinetic properties of degludec and glargine U300 in relation to the challenges these may pose during the hospitalization of patients with type 2 diabetes who are receiving outpatient regimens involving these newer …
Colorado--The Changing Landscape Of Land Use Law And Regulations Impacting The Colorado Oil And Gas Industry: From The Colorado Oil And Gas Conservation Act Of 1951 To Senate Bill 181 Of 2019, Ralph A. Cantafio
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
When Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis approved Senate Bill 181, this new law significantly redirected the historical focus of Colorado oil and gas regulation. This provided a significant delegation of land use related authority to local government for the first time since the passage of this Act in 1951. This new law moved away from the traditional notion of statewide regulation based upon exclusive jurisdiction by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (“COGCC”). While this change of legislative focus is significant, this latest direction is probably a natural continuation of a general trend that has been emerging in Colorado …

The emerging field of socio-hydrology is a special case of social-ecological systems research that focuses on coupled human-water systems, exploring how the hydrologic cycle and human cultural traits coevolve and how such coevolutions lead to phenomena of relevance to water security and sustainability. As such, most problems tackled by socio-hydrology involve some aspects of engineering design, such as large-scale water infrastructure, and self-organization in a broad context, such as cultural change at the population level and the hydrologic shift at the river basin or aquifer level. However, within the field of socio-hydrology, it has been difficult to find general theories …

Background: The traditional model of promotion and tenure in the health professions relies heavily on formal scholarship through teaching, research, and service. Institutions consider how much weight to give activities in each of these areas and determine a threshold for advancement. With the emergence of social media, scholars can engage wider audiences in creative ways and have a broader impact. Conventional metrics like the h-index do not account for social media impact. Social media engagement is poorly represented in most curricula vitae (CV) and therefore is undervalued in promotion and tenure reviews.
Objective: The objective was to develop crowdsourced guidelines …

Digital information is omnipresent, and access is almost unavoidable. Technology advances and comes at us in waves that take over and then tend to linger. iGen is the first generation to be born into this advanced technology and the state of constant “plugged-inness” to the Internet. iGen has not experienced a different, predominantly analog, world, but baby boomers, generation X, and millennials – many of whom now use Internet-connected technology heavily – can attest to how they have changed as it integrated into their lives. Along with many other areas of life, learning has also changed with technological progress. From …

Autonomous Health Movements: Criminalization, De-Medicalization, And Community-Based Direct Action, Naomi Braine
Publications and Research
This paper proposes the concept of autonomous health movements, drawing on an analysis of harm reduction in the United States and self-managed abortion globally. Harm reduction and self-managed abortion appear in the professional literature largely as evidenced-based public health strategies, more than as social movements. However, each began at the margins of the law as a form of direct action developed by activists anchored in social justice movements and working in community contexts independent of both state and institutional control according to a human rights perspective of bodily integrity and autonomy. An analysis of the history and dynamics of harm …

The development of strongly predictive validated biomarkers is essential for the field of immuno-oncology (IO) to advance. The highly complex, multifactorial data sets required to develop these biomarkers necessitate effective, responsible data-sharing efforts in order to maximize the scientific knowledge and utility gained from their collection. While the sharing of clinical- and safety-related trial data has already been streamlined to a large extent, the sharing of biomarker-aimed clinical trial derived data and data sets has been met with a number of hurdles that have impaired the progression of biomarkers from hypothesis to clinical use. These hurdles include technical challenges associated …

Current Sex Offender Laws: Are They Doing More Harm Than Good?, Gail Onderak
Current Sex Offender Laws: Are They Doing More Harm Than Good?, Gail Onderak
Counselor Education Capstones
Public sentiment toward sex offenders is that of hatred, contempt, and fear. These attitudes have led to the creation of sex offender legislation that is exceptionally restrictive and punitive. While best practices and current treatment models call for minimization of risk and maximization of personal fulfillment in order to reduce recidivism, sex offender laws pose as obstacles to these goals. A review of the risk-need-responsivity (RNR) principles and the Good Lives Model (GLM) treatment approach highlights the contrast between intended outcomes of these methods and the challenges that sex offender notification and registration (SORN) and residency restrictions present when trying …

Childhood Trauma And Attachment, Marcia Mihalovic
Counselor Education Capstones
According to statistics, 13% of children by the age of nine will have experienced 4 or more trauma related events (Finkelor et al., 2007, as cited by Cummings et al., 2017). These traumatic events have been linked to increased potential for health, educational, social-emotional, and relational concerns in a child’s future. Additionally, these trauma events have a significant impact on the child’s developing brain. Studies as explored in this paper, link the forming of secure attachments as vital. to resiliency and brain rewiring. The proposed parent/caregiver psychoeducation program consists of interwoven aspects from The Whole-Brain Child (Siegel, 2015), Trust-Based Relational …

Evaluation Of In Situ Bioremediation Of 1, 4-Dioxane Under Aerobic And Anaerobic Conditions, Angel Alejandro Ramos Garcia
All Dissertations
1,4-Dioxane is a widely distributed contaminant within the U.S. along with chlorinated solvents, specifically 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and other compounds. Due to its apparent recalcitrance and carcinogenicity, it is a contaminant that has raised considerable concerns because of its potential adverse effects on health. The physical and chemical properties and behavior of 1,4-dioxane create challenges for its characterization and treatment. It is highly mobile and does not readily biodegrade in the environment. Therefore, remediation for 1,4-dioxane has gained an increasing importance. The current leading technologies for remediation are energy and chemically intensive and ineffective for mass removal, whereas in situ bioremediation …
Integrating E-Calcutron Into The Anesthesia Clinical Settings To Reduce Potential Medical Calculation Errors Among Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Eric James
Doctoral Projects
Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are educated in nurse anesthesia programs so they can one day become certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Through the training program, SRNAs work in the anesthesia setting to apply what they learn from the classroom setting. Chipas and Mckenna (2011) found that SRNAs are more stressed than CRNAs. Melius (2012) looked at math anxiety and found a correlation between high math anxiety and poor math performance in nurses. Stress and math anxiety can cause poor math performance (Caviola, Carey, Mammarella, & Szucs, 2017). In the anesthesia clinical setting, stress and math anxiety may cause negative …
Best Practice Policy Recommendation Of Laryngeal Mask Airway Manometry Usage To Reduce Intra-Operative Complications, Tyler Armstrong, Catherine Crabtree
Best Practice Policy Recommendation Of Laryngeal Mask Airway Manometry Usage To Reduce Intra-Operative Complications, Tyler Armstrong, Catherine Crabtree
Doctoral Projects
Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) devices are a vital aspect of modern anesthesia practice. Unfortunately, even the simplest of airway management devices can lead to the development of negative pharyngeal-laryngeal patient consequences by over-inflation of the cuff on the LMA device. While these airway injuries are certainly harmful to the patient, they are preventable. With the utilization of manometry monitoring intra-operatively, the potential occurrences of these postoperative complications can be decreased, leading to better patient care and higher satisfaction for the healthcare facility and its stakeholders.
The current practice of measurement for LMA intra-cuff pressure intra-operatively is largely subjective, and there …

Private Farms, Public Power: Governing The Lives Of Dairy Cattle, Jessica Eisen
Journal of Food Law & Policy
It is widely assumed that laws governing dairy productioninclude substantial protection of animals’ interests—that in some way the state is regulating the treatment of farmed animals and protecting them against the worst excesses of their owners’ selfinterest. In fact, across jurisdictions in Canada and the United States, the standards governing farmed animal protection are not established by elected lawmakers or appointed regulators, but are instead primarily defined by private, interested parties, including producers themselves. As scholars of animal law have noted, this has contributed to weak and ineffectual legal protection of the interests of farmed animals. The present study will …
