Readiness For Insulin Pump Use In Pediatric Type I Diabetes: A Quality Improvement Project, Valeria Marin
Readiness For Insulin Pump Use In Pediatric Type I Diabetes: A Quality Improvement Project, Valeria Marin
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background: Insulin pumps are essential in the management of type 1 diabetic pediatric patients because of their versatility in meeting the developmental needs of childhood and adolescence. Summary of the Evidence: There is lack of evidence for standardized pump initiation program in pediatric patients (ADA, 2019). Moreover, adverse events from insulin pump misuse, such as diabetic ketoacidosis, arise from lack of anticipatory guidance of pump management and troubleshooting (Evert et al., 2016; Grunberger et al., 2014, Wheeler et al, 2014). Project Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to reduce and prevent adverse outcomes of insulin pumps …

In spring 2020, New York City became the acknowledged epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. To keep residents informed, Governor Cuomo conducted a streak of 111 daily press briefings reporting critical information about the status of the pandemic in the State at large, and New York City in particular. We show that through these briefings Governor Cuomo introduced an audience of New Yorkers and others to concepts basic to data-driven decision making such as data, science, models, and projections, and in so doing claimed that his decisions were unrelated to politics or whim. But we further suggest …
The Link Between Social Media Usage And Natural Hair Discrimination, Alia Wells
The Link Between Social Media Usage And Natural Hair Discrimination, Alia Wells
XULAneXUS
Since slavery, African Americans have been negatively impacted by Eurocentric beauty standards in America which favors the White majority. This has caused for natural hair to be discriminated against for centuries. As time has passed, African Americans have learned to appreciate their culture, beauty, and hair. The Natural Hair Movement on social media has improved society’s view on natural hair, but Eurocentric beauty standards are still very much present on all media platforms. I hypothesize that a lot of time spent on social media negatively influences views on natural hair compared to non-natural hair on African American women. Participants are …

Faculty Scholarship
Examining the chasm between access services staff and “the rest of the library” is illustrative of the divisions of labor that exist throughout the library. The chapter is an exploration of the effects of siloing and hierarchies in library staffing. The effort to elevate the work of the library within the academy has resulted in a troubling stratification of labor and devaluing of certain kinds of work within libraries.

Remediating Contaminated Groundwater With An Aerated, Direct-Push, Oxidant Delivery System, James Reece, Mark Christenson, Ann Kambhu, Yusong Li, Clifford Harris, Steve D. Comfort
Remediating Contaminated Groundwater With An Aerated, Direct-Push, Oxidant Delivery System, James Reece, Mark Christenson, Ann Kambhu, Yusong Li, Clifford Harris, Steve D. Comfort
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
One of the biggest challenges to treating contaminated aquifers with chemical oxidants is achieving uniform coverage of the target zone. In an effort to maximize coverage, we report the design and installation of a novel aerated, slow-release oxidant delivery system that can be installed by direct-push equipment. By continuously bubbling air beneath a slow-release oxidant in situ, an airlift pump is created that causes water and oxidant to be dispersed from the top of the outer screen and drawn in at the bottom. This continuous circulation pattern around each drive point greatly facilitates the spreading of the oxidant as it …

Available guidance to mitigate health risks from exposure to freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) is largely derived from temperate ecosystems. Yet in tropical ecosystems, HABs can occur year-round, and resource-dependent populations face multiple routes of exposure to toxic components. Along Winam Gulf, Lake Victoria, Kenya, fisher communities rely on lake water contaminated with microcystins (MCs) from HABs. In these peri-urban communities near Kisumu, we tested hypotheses that MCs exceed exposure guidelines across seasons, and persistent HABs present a chronic risk to fisher communities through ingestion with minimal water treatment and frequent, direct contact. We tested source waters at eleven communities …

This exploration was used to examine the relationship between leadership styles and faculty’s overall job satisfaction, and to determine to what extent these leadership styles predicted the faculty’s overall job satisfaction. The theoretical framework for this study was the Full Range Leadership theory, which consists of three leadership styles and considered the independent variables for the study: transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership. The dependent variable for the study …
A Study Of Familial And Cultural Factors Which Contributed To Degree Attainment For Nine South Texas Latinas, Maria Mendez
A Study Of Familial And Cultural Factors Which Contributed To Degree Attainment For Nine South Texas Latinas, Maria Mendez
Theses & Dissertations
Research Focus. The Latino population is the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States. While Latino college enrollment is increasing, and dropout rates are decreasing, Latinas continue to trail behind Whites in college education and degree attainment. Latina degree attainment is half of White students, and the trend has continued since 2000 (Barshay, 2018; Harris & Tienda, 2012; Pew Research, 2019). The first step in correcting a problem is to recognize that the problem exists (Escobedo, 1980). Underrepresentation of Latinas in education has been an issue that has been addressed, but until the last few decades, corrective …
How Leaders And Employees Experience, Make Sense Of, And Find Meaning In Humility, David Perryman
How Leaders And Employees Experience, Make Sense Of, And Find Meaning In Humility, David Perryman
Theses & Dissertations
By just about any measure, organizations today are more dynamic, diverse, and interdependent than at any other time in history. This environment puts unprecedented pressure on the human capacity to lead. And still, we demand more from our leaders—even as employees experience rising stress levels, declining loyalty, and deteriorating trust in their employers, and organizations face historically high rates of employee turnover along with the resulting financial and emotional costs. Clinging to romanticized notions of the larger-than-life leader blinds us to the paradoxical promise of humility; namely, that a leader’s greatest strength may lie, ironically, in the ability …

Pivoting to remote work as female academics and to schooling our children from home as mothers in March 2020 marked a dramatic shift in how we enact our MotherScholar identities. This collaborative autoethnographic study employs a modification of interactive interviewing and photovoice to produce verbal and visual text of COVID-19 MotherScholar identity work for analysis. Thematic analysis results in themes of maternal interruptions, professional interruptions, maternal recognition, and professional recognition. Of note, our MotherScholar interactivity functioned as identity work as we sought and granted legitimacy to one another’s’ COVID-19 MotherScholar identities. Of particular concern to us is how institutions of …

Cash Transfers As A Response To Covid-19: A Randomized Experiment In Kenya, Wyatt Brooks, Kevin Donovan, Terence Johnson, Jackline Oluoch-Aridi
Discussion Papers
We deliver an unconditional cash transfer equal to one month’s average profit to a randomly selected group of Kenyan female microenterprise owners in May 2020 at the outset of exponential growth in COVID-19 cases. Firm profit, inventory spending, and food expenditures increased relative to a control group. Entrepreneurs recovered about one third of the profit lost during the crisis. The transfers caused greater business activity by inducing previously closed businesses to re-open. PPE spending and precautionary management practices increase to mitigate this effect, but only among those who perceive major health risk from COVID-19. The results suggest cash transfers promoted …
