The Human Dimension Of Peace And Aggression, Chiara Redaelli Dec 2020

The Human Dimension Of Peace And Aggression, Chiara Redaelli

International Law Studies

Since the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations, the current international legal framework has drastically changed. In its traditional understanding, aggression is “the supreme international crime” aimed at protecting sovereignty and the territorial integrity of states. On the other hand, the U.N. Charter endorses an understanding of peace in the negative sense, that is, as mere absence of war. As human rights have gained momentum, they have helped reshape the legal landscape, a phenomenon referred to as the humanization of international law. How do peace and aggression fit within the humanized legal framework? This article will investigate the …

Linear And Decoupled Decoders For Dual-Polarized Antenna-Based Mimo Systems, Sara Shakil Qureshi, Sajid Ali, Syed Ali Hassan Dec 2020

Linear And Decoupled Decoders For Dual-Polarized Antenna-Based Mimo Systems, Sara Shakil Qureshi, Sajid Ali, Syed Ali Hassan

All Works

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been used to design STBCs that provide improved performance in terms of various design parameters. In this paper, we show that all QODs obtained from generic iterative construction techniques based on the Adams-Lax-Phillips approach have linear and decoupled decoders which significantly reduce the computational complexity at the receiver. Our result is based on the quaternionic description of communication channels among dual-polarized antennas. Another contribution of this work is the linear and decoupled decoder for quasi-orthogonal codes for non-square as well as square designs. The proposed solution …

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

This is a comprehensive review of the literature on drug interactions (DIs) between atypical antipsychotics and anti-infective agents that focuses on those DIs with the potential to be clinically relevant and classifies them as pharmacokinetic (PK) or pharmacodynamic (PD) DIs. PubMed searches were conducted for each of the atypical antipsychotics and most commonly used anti-infective agents (13 atypical antipsychotics by 61 anti-infective agents/classes leading to 793 individual searches). Additional relevant articles were obtained from citations and from prior review articles written by the authors. Based on prior DI articles and our current understanding of PK and PD mechanism, we developed …

Fluorescence Spectroscopic And Molecular Modelling Studies On The Molecular Interaction Mechanism Of Bromodeoxyuridine With Human Serum Albumin, Amira Adlin Roslan Dec 2020

Fluorescence Spectroscopic And Molecular Modelling Studies On The Molecular Interaction Mechanism Of Bromodeoxyuridine With Human Serum Albumin, Amira Adlin Roslan

Student Works (2020-2029)

The interaction of a nucleoside analogue, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) with human serum albumin (HSA) was studied to investigate the binding phenomenon and analyze the protein conformation upon BrdU binding. Multiple spectroscopic techniques, viz. intrinsic and three-dimensional (3-D) fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy along with molecular docking were used. A decrease in the Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) with the increase in temperature suggested BrdU-induced quenching of protein fluorescence as static quenching and thus implied BrdU−HSA complex formation. This was also supported by UV-Vis absorption spectral results, showing hyperchromism in the absorption spectrum of HSA upon BrdU addition. Intermediate binding …

Case Series And Review Of Hematological And Non-Hematological Malignancies In Aging Patients With Sickle Cell Disease In The Hydroxyurea Era., Sanaa Rizk, David J. Axelrod, Rasaq Olaosebikan, Samir K. Ballas

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Survival of adult patients with sickle cell disease has increased progressively since the 1970s. Aging patients with sickle cell disease are at risk of developing comorbidities that are not due to sickle cell disease itself, including malignancies. Many studies tried to assess the incidence of malignancy in patients with sickle cell disease. However, no studies have been done to evaluate cancer incidences in aging sickle cell patients, especially in the hydroxyurea (HU) era. In this review, we assessed the prevalence of malignancies in aging patients with sickle cell disease at our institution with or without HU therapy. Retrospective analysis of …

Reducing Patient Falls By Realigning Nursing Hours Per Patient Days, Hermes Vargas Dec 2020

Reducing Patient Falls By Realigning Nursing Hours Per Patient Days, Hermes Vargas

Student Scholarly Projects

Patient falls are the “second leading cause of unintentional injury death” (World Health Organization [WHO] (2018), para. 3) and increase healthcare costs by an estimated $13,806 per fall (Walsh et al., 2018). These fall-related costs translate to a potential savings of approximately $400,374 to the selected organization since the unit chosen for the practice change project experienced 29 falls in the fiscal year 2019 (C. Hernandez, personal communication, September 23, 2019).

The PICOT question that guided this project was: In a medical/surgical inpatient population in acute care (P) how does realigning the Nursing Hours per Patient Days (NHPPD) (I) compared …

Income In The Off-Season: Household Adaptation To Yearly Work Interruptions, John Coglianese, Brendan M. Price Dec 2020

Income In The Off-Season: Household Adaptation To Yearly Work Interruptions, John Coglianese, Brendan M. Price

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Joblessness is highly seasonal. To analyze how households adapt to seasonal joblessness, we introduce a measure of seasonal work interruptions premised on the idea that a seasonal worker will tend to exit employment around the same time each year. We show that an excess share of prime-age U.S. workers experience recurrent separations spaced exactly 12 months apart. These separations coincide with aggregate seasonal downturns and are concentrated in seasonally volatile industries. Examining workers most prone to seasonal work interruptions, we find that these workers incur large earnings losses during the off-season. Lost earnings are 1) driven mainly by repeated separations …

Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research

Leishmaniasis is one of the most important endemic diseases in Sudan. The glycolytic pathway is one of the essential pathways in the survival and pathogenicity of the leishmania parasite. This study aimed to evaluate the antileishmanial activities of three antimalarial drugs through targeting the glycolytic pathway inside the parasite. Antileishmanial activities of artesunate, quinine and mefloquine were evaluated using an in vitro anti-promastigote assay. Then, in silico molecular docking was conducted using Autodock 4.0 software to study the molecular interactions of antimalarial drugs to different key glycolytic enzymes. The results of the current study, Artesunate, quinine, and mefloquine showed effective …

The International Health Regulations (IHR), of which the World Health Organization is custodian, govern how countries collectively promote global health security, including prevention, detection, and response to potential global health emergencies such as the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. While Article 44 of this binding legal instrument requires countries to collaborate and assist each other in meeting their respective obligations, recent events demonstrate that the precise nature and scope of these legal obligations are ill-understood. A shared understanding of the level and type of collaboration legally required by the IHR is a necessary step in ensuring these obligations can be acted upon …

Open Access: “Information Wants To Be Free”?, Richard Poynder

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The main points made in this document:

- Internet mantras like information wants to be free misled OA advocates about what is possible in an online world. Amongst other things, these mantras led to the mistaken belief that publishing would be very much cheaper on the internet.

- BOAI was intended to achieve three things: to resolve the longstanding problems of affordability, accessibility, and equity that have long dogged scholarly communication.

- It now seems unlikely that the affordability and equity problems will be resolved, which will impact disproportionately negatively on those in the Global South. And if the geopolitical …

Covid-19 Impact On Radiology Students’ Distance Learning (Fall 2020), Mary Lee, Zoya Vinokur, Jason Chan, Renzo Marmolejo, Cherylann Jackson-Holmes

Publications and Research

Distance learning (DL) is a teaching tool that offers education to students remotely in various locations (Ruiz, 2006). The increase in distance learning education is evident in all types of educational programs including those in Radiologic Sciences. DL education programs are expected to comply with all standards just as traditional programs are (Aaron, 2015). With traditional class settings, knowledge is taught at a given time and day and is structured in terms of course development and attendance. It does not factor in the domestic and familial responsibilities of the students outside the classroom walls or the effects of a worldwide …

Together We Stand: The Solidarity Effect Of Personized Sellers On Essential Workers, Katina Kulow, Kara Bentley, Priyali Rajagopal

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The current research examines how products from personized sellers operate as a source of social support and solidarity for essential workers who are experiencing elevated levels of occupational stress since the advent of COVID-19. A series of experiments show that consumers who view themselves as essential workers prefer products from personized sellers (e.g., Etsy) compared to nonpersonized sellers (e.g., Amazon). These effects are driven by higher feelings of solidarity made salient by the personized seller. Our findings document a novel way by which consumers who are experiencing significantly high levels of occupational stress during the COVID-19 pandemic may seek social …

Many research and monitoring networks in recent decades have provided publicly available data documenting environmental and ecological change, but little is known about the status of efforts to synthesize this information across networks. We convened a working group to assess ongoing and potential cross-network synthesis research and outline opportunities and challenges for the future, focusing on the US-based research network (the US Long-Term Ecological Research network, LTER) and monitoring network (the National Ecological Observatory Network, NEON). LTER-NEON cross-network research synergies arise from the potentials for LTER measurements, experiments, models, and observational studies to provide context and mechanisms for interpreting NEON …

Focal Cortical Dysplasia With Prolonged Ictal Asystole, A Case Report, Ahmad Wali, Fowzia Siddiqui Dec 2020

Focal Cortical Dysplasia With Prolonged Ictal Asystole, A Case Report, Ahmad Wali, Fowzia Siddiqui

Section of Neurology

Introduction: Cortical dysplasia carries significant morbidities such as seizures and delayed milestones. Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) causes refractory epilepsy with various seizure types depending on the location and extent of the dysplasia. FCD in the temporal region and the insular cortex may cause ictal bradycardia (IB) and ictal asystole (IA). Video EEG (VEEG) with simultaneous EKG recording can better diagnose these cardiac abnormalities in FCD. We describe a case of refractory epilepsy. The patient's clinical seizures were usually followed by syncope. VEEG revealed frequent seizures some of which were associated with prolonged ictal asystole.
Results: A 15 years old female …

Exploring Optimism And Purpose In Life As Mediators Of The Association Between Childhood Socioeconomic Status And Common Cold Susceptibility, Stephanie Munduruca, Vivian Luong, Brooke N. Jenkins

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Americans suffer from 1 billion colds a year. Correspondingly, previous research has shown that lower socioeconomic status (SES) during childhood is associated with lower adult health, including decreased resistance to the common cold. This correlation between childhood SES and common cold susceptibility may be mediated by an individual's optimism and purpose in life. Of interest, several studies have found evidence that higher childhood SES is associated with a higher purpose of life and higher optimism. Furthermore, previous evidence has confirmed that higher optimism and higher purpose of life are linked to better …

Child Postoperative Pain: Impact Of Child Temperament And Parent Mood On Pain After Surgery, Harshitha V. Venkatesh, Michelle A. Fortier, Zeev N. Kain, Brooke N. Jenkins

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Around 80% of children who undergo surgery experience moderate to severe postoperative pain. Various psychosocial factors contribute to exacerbations of this pain. A child’s inborn personality traits and style of interaction with the environment are known as temperament. Children who are less sociable and more distress-prone (e.g., those who cry, throw tantrums) are more likely to have an anxious temperament. This anxiety before and after surgery may lead to an increase in postoperative pain levels as well. Parent pain ratings do not always reflect true child pain. Overtime, a parent’s emotional state and mood may change how they perceive child …

Smart Homes For Smart Health: Developing An Interactive System To Reduce In-Home Secondhand Smoke, Christie Kika, Janice Han, Vincent Berardi Dec 2020

Smart Homes For Smart Health: Developing An Interactive System To Reduce In-Home Secondhand Smoke, Christie Kika, Janice Han, Vincent Berardi

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Smoke from any source is potentially harmful because it contains fine particulate matter that is associated with acute and chronic conditions. Second-hand smoke (SHS) is particularly unsafe for children due to biological characteristics (higher breathing rates, immature lungs and underdeveloped immune systems) that make it difficult to filter toxins. To address this concern, we recently completed Project Fresh Air (PFA), an NIH-funded R01 intervention that installed air particle sensors in the households of tobacco smokers who lived with children. The purpose of our research is to investigate and develop efficient smart home devices that monitor SHS in various living spaces to …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The goal of this experiment is to test a model of the sense of agency, intention, volition, and causality in order to examine the time course of the sense of agency associated with voluntary and involuntary movements. We examine the roles of context, expectation, and sensory feedback in the feeling of agency as well as examining the aspects of volition in different kinds of decisions. This experiment is thought to be very novel as it stimulates an internal signal for movement from an external source which is why the participant can find it hard to decipher if they are fully …

La Virgen María Y El Niño Fidencio: Un Análisis Literario Y Cultural De Figuras Veneradas, Emily Schahrer, Polly J. Hodge

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Famous historical and literary figures who display characteristics of empathy, wisdom and compassion inspire a great sense of faith in humanity and hope for the future. There are two exemplary figures explored in this study that embody these characteristics. The first is the Virgin Mary, a saint widely known and recognized by the Catholic Church since the 4th century. The other is Niño Fidencio: a famous healer, man of God, nicknamed a “saint of the people” from Espinazo, Mexico who lived in the 20th century. Although Niño Fidencio is not officially recognized by the Catholic Church, he names …

Transnational Privilege During The Climate Crisis, Joanna Falla

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The idea of man-made climate change has been common knowledge in America for decades, yet there is still a significant number of people who are stead-fast climate deniers, regardless of scientific understanding. Past research has covered possible factors in one’s upbringing to cause climate change denials, such as political parties or religion. We seek to answer the curiosity of climate change denial with a much simpler variable: location. The Earth is covered in a myriad of ecosystems, each with its own regional climate. People live across the globe, so each has different values and principles about the environment based on …

Adl (Activities Of Daily Living) Differences Amongst Healthy Older And Younger Individuals, Parkinson’S, And Stroke Populations, Johanna Daerendinger, Bridgette Khol, Michael Shiraishi, Rahul Soangra

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Millions of individuals worldwide suffer from Parkinson’s disease and stroke. Medical expenses are on the rise, which negatively contributes to the difficult conditions these patients are already experiencing. In addition, it has been known that activities of daily living (ADL) are limited in older adults compared to younger counterparts. The neurological disorder populations being investigated in this project are Parkinson’s disease patients and stroke patients and they are being compared to the healthy control group consisting of healthy older and younger individuals. In this study, the McRoberts sensor, that is used to measure acceleration and gyroscopic data, is worn by …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Upwards of 6 million children in the United States are afflicted with pediatric asthma. While previous research has linked asthma to multiple contributing biological and environmental factors, recent research suggests that psychological and social factors may have an impact on physiological outcomes of asthma like lung function and lung inflammation. Therefore, we suggest the need to study the impact of positive psychological factors such as a well-functioning family environment and beneficial social support on symptoms and lung function of children diagnosed with asthma. In the present pilot study, we recruited a total of 15 children with a confirmed asthma diagnosis …

Covid-19 Viral Testing Disparities In Los Angeles City, Laura Cyphers Dec 2020

Covid-19 Viral Testing Disparities In Los Angeles City, Laura Cyphers

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Hispanic and Black communities have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality (California Department of Public Health, 2020). Inequitable access to viral testing resources may have exacerbated these COVID-19-related racial and ethnic health disparities. For example, reports from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health revealed glaring viral testing disparities in April 2020 (early pandemic), with predominantly White communities in Los Angeles County receiving 65% more tests than Hispanic and Black communities. In response, California statewide testing was expanded for communities of color (Vann et al., 2020). To investigate access to viral testing in Los Angeles City, the current …

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare but aggressive carcinoma characterized by severe erythema and edema of the breast, with many patients presenting in advanced metastatic disease. The "inflammatory" nature is not due to classic immune-mediated inflammation, but instead results from tumor-mediated blockage of dermal lymphatic ducts. Previous work has shown that expression of PD-L1 on tumor cells can suppress T cell activation in triple-negative (TN) non-IBC breast cancer. In the present work, we investigated immune parameters in peripheral blood of metastatic IBC patients to determine whether cellular components of the immune system are altered, thereby contributing to pathogenesis …
