More Research Is Needed On The Impact Of Workplace Violence, Bullying And Sexual Harassment In Child Welfare, Anita Barbee

Other QIC-WD Products

Many employees working in social services are exposed to workplace violence (described in Andersen, et al., 2018) and bullying (discussed in Whitaker, 2012). The workplace violence paper showed not only that up to three-fourths of social workers are exposed to violence at work, but that organizational structures and dynamics set the stage for violence to occur. Settings where staff lacked role clarity and predictability, and where emotional demands, role conflict, and work family conflict were high, also were associated with more threats and violence among employees and by clients. These findings, in addition to studies on bullying, seem to point …

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

The limited availability of biological samples from patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 for future research was quickly identified at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to this need, a COVID-19 biobank was initiated by the University of Louisville Division of Infectious Diseases, Center of Excellence for Research in Infectious Diseases (CERID). The COVID-19 biobank contains waste samples obtained from patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in any of the nine Louisville, Kentucky, area hospitals during the timeframe of April 13 to September 20, 2020. The COVID-19 biobank stores approximately 1,623 waste samples with 2,127 aliquots for distribution. All samples are …

Background and objectives Sitagliptin, a dipeptidylpeptidase-4 inhibitor, is commonlyprescribed to patientswith type 2 diabetes. As this drug is primarily eliminated by the kidney, a reduced dose is recommended for patients with CKD. Some evidence suggests that sitagliptin is associated with a higher risk of congestive heart failure, particularly at higher doses.Wecompare the 1-year risk of death or hospitalizationwith congestive heart failure in patients with CKD newly prescribed sitagliptin at <50 versus ≤50 mg/d. Design, setting, participants, & measurements This population-based cohort study included older adults (>66 years) with type 2 diabetes and an eGFR<45 ml/min per 1.73 m2 (but not receiving dialysis) who were newly prescribed sitagliptin between 2010 and 2017 in Ontario, Canada. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting on the basis of propensity scores to balance baseline characteristics. The primary composite outcome was death or hospitalization with congestive heart failure. Secondary outcomes included hospitalization with pancreatitis or hypoglycemia, all-cause hospitalization, and glycemic control. Weighted hazard ratios were obtained using Cox proportional hazards regression, and 95%confidence intervalswere obtained using bootstrap variance estimators. Results Of 9215 patients, 6518 started sitagliptin at >50 mg/d, and 2697 started sitagliptin at ≤50 mg/d. The 1-year risk of death or hospitalization with congestive heart failure did not …

Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support Attendance Interventions For Schools, Bailey Biggerstaff Dec 2020

Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support Attendance Interventions For Schools, Bailey Biggerstaff

Counselor Education Capstones

School attendance is a serious problem all schools face. Students who miss even just a few days of school each month are less likely to read proficiently, fail classes, or drop out of high school (Attendance Works, 2018b). Luckily, educators and other educational stakeholders can help to reduce the rates of absenteeism. It is essential to first identify the source of the problem, or why a child is missing school. Stakeholders should then implement interventions for absenteeism using a multi-tier system of support (MTSS). This literature review defines truancy and chronic absenteeism, identifies barriers which cause students to miss school, …

Counselor Education Capstones

This literature review seeks to discover the impact and effect that bibliotherapeutic interventions can have on students who are experiencing grief, loss, and trauma in various forms. A literature review was created to synthesize the information from multiple studies and articles exploring the effects of bibliotherapy on individuals who have experienced trauma in the forms of death and bereavement, abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, natural disasters, terrorism, and acts of societal violence. Though there seems to be a shortage of research on effectiveness of bibliotherapy, the research that was found supports the idea that bibliotherapeutic interventions are beneficial for children …

Most prostate cancer (PCa) deaths result from progressive failure in standard androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), leading to metastatic castration-resistant PCa (mCRPC); however, the mechanism and key players leading to this are not fully understood. While studying the role of tousled-like kinase 1 (TLK1) and never in mitosis gene A (NIMA)-related kinase 1 (NEK1) in a DNA damage response (DDR)-mediated cell cycle arrest in LNCaP cells treated with bicalutamide, we uncovered that overexpression of wt-NEK1 resulted in a rapid conversion to androgen-independent (AI) growth, analogous to what has been observed when YAP1 is overexpressed. We now report that overexpression of wt-NEK1 …

Prevention Of Eating Disorders In Children: A Guide For Nurse Practitioners, Michelle Yeates, Jane Lassetter Phd, Rn Dec 2020

Prevention Of Eating Disorders In Children: A Guide For Nurse Practitioners, Michelle Yeates, Jane Lassetter Phd, Rn

Student Works

Eating disorders are prevalent in Western society and are highly influenced by body dissatisfaction and disordered eating patterns. Disordered eating refers to unhealthy behaviors used to control and influence weight with the potential to become eating disorders. Eating disorders can lead to or further accelerate both physical and emotional damage. As such, it is important to determine possible contributing factors to decrease negative outcomes. Because parents are typically the primary caretakers of children, it is necessary for nurse practitioners (NPs) to know how to best educate parents in the prevention of eating disorders in their children. This clinical paper provides …

After a summer of protests sparked by police brutality, the United States remains divided on this most important issue. This paper will seek to contextualize this country’s situation to explain that these protests stem from a history of inequality, in order to argue against claims that the protests are unjustified. With a multidisciplinary approach, we can begin to observe just how unequal this country is and understand what drives so many people to protest during the middle of a global pandemic.
