Stopped Listening: Experiences Of Higher Education Refugee-Background Learners, Peggy Lynn Maclsaac, Staci B. Martin, Wilson Kubwayo, Chablue Wah, Salome Nanyenga

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper discusses the academic agency of refugee-background individuals who have resettled to the United States of America and the responsibility of higher education to value refugee-background learners as knowledge creators. Contrary to deficit thinking that views learners as unable to succeed due to their refugee background, this study explores how their experiences demonstrate their multiple capacities to succeed in higher education. The essence of these experiences is presented using self-reflexive collaborative speaking and writing inquiry. Three main themes drawn from the results were the capacities of refugee-background learners to adapt cultures, maintain multiple social connections, and exercise agency.

Keep Calm Or Get Excited? Examining The Effects Of Different Types Of Positive Affect On Responses To Acute Pain, Amanda M. Acevedo, Kate A. Leger, Brooke N. Jenkins, Sarah D. Pressman

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Researchers typically assume that all forms of positive affect (PA) are equally beneficial for attenuating the physiological stress response. We tested whether this association is more nuanced by examining the role of arousal level of PA on physiological responses to acute pain. Participants (N = 283, 75.6% female, Mage = 20.6) were randomized to a low, mid, or high arousal (calm, happy, and excited, respectively) induction condition or to a neutral control and then completed an acute pain-inducing cold pressor task. Sympathetic and parasympathetic responses along with self-reported pain and distress were assessed. Results indicated that the calm condition …

Wireless Sensors For Brain Activity—A Survey, Mahyar Tajdini, Volodymyr Sokolov, Ievgeniia Kuzminykh, Stavros Shiaeles, Bogdan Ghita

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Over the last decade, the area of electroencephalography (EEG) witnessed a progressive move from high-end large measurement devices, relying on accurate construction and providing high sensitivity, to miniature hardware, more specifically wireless wearable EEG devices. While accurate, traditional EEG systems need a complex structure and long periods of application time, unwittingly causing discomfort and distress on the users. Given their size and price, aside from their lower sensitivity and narrower spectrum band(s), wearable EEG devices may be used regularly by individuals for continuous collection of user data from non-medical environments. This allows their usage for diverse, nontraditional, non-medical applications, including …

Decoding Perception Of Speech From Behavioral Responses Using Spatio-Temporal Cnns, Kazi Ashraf Moinuddin Dec 2020

Decoding Perception Of Speech From Behavioral Responses Using Spatio-Temporal Cnns, Kazi Ashraf Moinuddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Categorical perception (CP) of speech is a complex process reflecting individuals’ ability to perceive sound and is measured using response time (RT). The cognitive processes involved in mapping neural activities to behavioral response are stochastic and further compounded by individuality and variations. This thesis presents a data-driven approach and develops parameter optimized models to understand the relationship between cognitive events and behavioral response (e.g., RT). We introduce convolutional neural networks (CNN) to learn the representation from EEG recordings. In addition, we develop parameter optimized and interpretable models in decoding CP using two representations: 1) spatial-spectral topomaps and 2) evoked response …

Zanubrutinib For The Treatment Of Myd88 Wild-Type Waldenström Macroglobulinemia: A Substudy Of The Phase 3 Aspen Trial, M Dimopoulos, Aspen Investigators

Peninsula Medical School

Patients with Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) lacking activating mutations in the MYD88 gene (MYD88WT) have demonstrated relatively poor outcomes to ibrutinib monotherapy, with no major responses reported in a phase 2 pivotal study. Zanubrutinib is a novel, selective Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor designed to maximize BTK occupancy and minimize off-target activity. The ASPEN study consisted of a randomized comparison of zanubrutinib and ibrutinib efficacy and safety in patients with WM who have the MYD88 mutation, as well as a separate cohort of patients without MYD88 mutation (MYD88WT) or with unknown mutational status who received zanubrutinib. Results from the latter single-arm …

A cognitive intervention that may reduce weight and caloric intake is inhibitory control training (ICT; having individuals repeatedly withhold dominant responses to unhealthy food images). We conducted a randomized controlled trial where 100 individuals with overweight or obesity were assigned to complete a generic (n = 48) or food-specific ICT (n = 52) training four times per week for four weeks. Weight and caloric intake were ob- tained at baseline, four-weeks, and 12-weeks. Participants also completed high-calorie and neutral go/no-go tasks while N2 event-related potential (ERP) data, a neural indicator of inhibitory control, was measured at all visits. Results from …

The Parent Behind The Eating Disorder: How Parenting Styles Affect Eating Disorders In Adolescents, Jessica Robertson Dec 2020

The Parent Behind The Eating Disorder: How Parenting Styles Affect Eating Disorders In Adolescents, Jessica Robertson

Family Perspectives

The family environment, specifically parent-child interaction and parenting practices, can influence the likelihood of adolescents—especially teenage girls—developing an eating disorder. Because of the high levels of control and warmth, authoritative parenting appears to be the most promising setting for adolescents to avoid disordered eating behaviors and to develop strong mental and physical health. Parenting styles such as authoritarian and neglectful parenting include practices that generally may not be supportive and can contribute to the likelihood of eating disorders. Once a teenaged girl develops an eating disorder, authoritative parenting has also shown the most potential to intervene appropriately to assist the …
