Our Stories, Our Voices: The Lived Experiences Of Black Families With Young Children During Covid-19, Devalin Jackson
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of Black families raising young children during shelter in place orders and distance learning due to Covid-19. The study was conducted virtually through Zoom and Google form due to county shelter in place orders. Participants were recruited from the school in which the researcher worked. Through the use of virtual interviews, the five participants highlighted themes of reconnections, isolations, empowerment, family values and conversations. The families shared experiences of resilience and hope and brought thoughts of how these experiences could be highlighted in instructional and curriculum designs; especially during …
Meta Analysis Of Rct Interventions, Ayo Ellis
Meta Analysis Of Rct Interventions, Ayo Ellis
Master's Theses
External validity of an RCT intervention enables understanding of where interventions are successful.
Meta-analysis allows for more generalized statements to be made on the effectiveness of RCTs across countries of different geographic and national income profiles. By comparing the findings from similar studies carried out in different settings I seek to describe whether RCTs in certain sectors are more sensitive to high GDP growth or higher levels of GDP. I consider 402 health, education, and industry development RCT studies done between 1980 and 2015 in 201 countries compiled by development non-profit Aidgrade. I find no significant effect of income level …

BACKGROUND: School wellness programming is important for promoting healthy lifestyles and academic achievement in youth; however, research is needed on methods that can help schools implement and sustain such programs on their own. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors within and outside the school environment that influenced school capacity for implementation and potential sustainability of wellness programming.
METHODS: As part of the School Wellness Integration Targeting Child Health (SWITCH®) intervention, elementary school wellness teams (N = 30) were guided through a capacity-building process focused on promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors in students. Data on implementation …

Tree Canopy Effects On Roof-Harvested Rainwater In East Texas, Kimberly Gamez
Tree Canopy Effects On Roof-Harvested Rainwater In East Texas, Kimberly Gamez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nine experimental metal roofs with rainwater harvesting systems were constructed and water quality parameters were measured in 2016-2017 in order to evaluate the effects of arboreal overhang on roof-harvested rainwater quality collected in East Texas. Three treatments were evaluated: Rainwater collected from roofs without any overhanging tree vegetation, rainwater collected from roofs under predominantly Southern yellow pine tree cover, and rainwater collected from roofs under predominantly hardwood tree cover. Rainwater was collected from these roofs for one year. The effects of canopy cover on water quality parameters, comparison to drinking water standards, first-flush efficiency, and seasonal effects were evaluated.

An Efficient Approach To Screening Mediators In Epigenetic Data: Emscreening, Alexandra Nicole Smith
An Efficient Approach To Screening Mediators In Epigenetic Data: Emscreening, Alexandra Nicole Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Mediation analyses study the effect of exposures on outcomes thorugh mediators. With the develoment of high throughput technologies, high-dimenisonal data are increasinbl produced. To better control fro both Type I and II errors in high dimensional data, a screening method, emscreening, was developed using cross-validation. Through simulation studies, we examined the sensitivity and specificity of emscreening in different scenarios and compared them to two commonly used methods: the false-discovery rate (FDR) and Bonferroni methods. The propsed method showed higher sensitivity and comparable specificyt with the number of mediators tested was large (5,000 or 500,000). Overall, emscreening can identify significant mediators …
How Palestinian Aid Organizations Adapt To The Possibility Of Further Annexation And Rights Abuses In The Wake Of "The Deal Of The Century", Nadia L. Wiggins
How Palestinian Aid Organizations Adapt To The Possibility Of Further Annexation And Rights Abuses In The Wake Of "The Deal Of The Century", Nadia L. Wiggins
Capstone Collection
This research explores the question, “To what extent has the ‘Deal of the Century’ impacted Palestinian aid organizations, and how might it impact them in the future?” The significance of this question lies in the fact that the “Deal of the Century” claims to solve one of the longest and most complex conflicts, yet it has not been sufficiently analyzed from a Palestinian perspective nor a humanitarian perspective. Furthermore, by presenting scholarly critiques of the deal and aid worker’s concerns, my hope is that an American audience may be convinced of the complicity of our government in devising a failed …

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Humanitarian Aid Operations In Jordan, Hana Driss
The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Humanitarian Aid Operations In Jordan, Hana Driss
Capstone Collection
Abstract
This is a qualitative descriptive exploratory study on the effects of humanitarian aid operations during the onset of Covid-19 through the perspective of aid workers in Jordan. The kingdom of Jordan was chosen for this study due to the country’s place as a humanitarian oasis in a region in crisis and to the government mandating one of the strictest lockdowns in the world in response to Covid-19. These measures closed borders and completely halted inter-city travel within Jordan, making the delivery of aid to refugees and inaccessible communities difficult. Ten participants were contacted and interviewed for this study. Each …

Mental Health Stigma: A Wicked Problem (Slides), Katelyn Yoh
Mental Health Stigma: A Wicked Problem (Slides), Katelyn Yoh
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Mental health stigma began in the 5th century, continued through the 18th century, and began to improve in the 1840s. Mental health has been viewed as negative and those who suffer from a mental illness or disorder also suffer from stigma as well as negative consequences, such as other mental health concerns, physical issues, and psychological issues due to stigma. This paper goes into deep detail about what mental health stigma is, how stigma is used from peers and internalizes and creates self stigma, what the results of stigma are (all negative), and lastly ways to help put an end …

New outbreaks are those outbreaks that were first identified during the current reporting week. Ongoing outbreaks are …
How Does Child Maltreatment Impact Social Emotional Development In Children Under Five?, Jazmine Fennig
How Does Child Maltreatment Impact Social Emotional Development In Children Under Five?, Jazmine Fennig
Graduate Teacher Education
Research examined in this paper found that children under the age of five years old who are victims of child maltreatment, can display hindered development in social emotional behavioral domains. Being that the brain develops so rapidly and is fragile during this age, there is a plethora of developmental, mental struggles, personal struggles, and complications that children can face during the remaining years of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood as a result (Campbell, Walker, & Egede, 2016; Kahr Nilsson, Landorph, Houmann, Olsen & Skovgaard, 2019; & McKelvey, Edge, Mesman, Whiteside-Mansell & Bradley, 2018). Effects can range from short term to long …
Mediating Factors Of Family Risk And Parent-Child Interaction Quality, Gable Munn
Mediating Factors Of Family Risk And Parent-Child Interaction Quality, Gable Munn
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Medium or high family risk is defined as having 2 or more risk factors as present in intake surveys in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project (EHSREP). Previous research has shown that high and medium risk families are more prone to negative parent-child interactions (Steele et al., 2016), but mediating variables are not clear. We hypothesize that parental stress and familial conflict are significant mediating variables between family risk and parent-child interaction quality. We also suspect that stress will have a more significant effect (Mak et al., 2020). The present study used extant data from the EHSREP (N=3001) …
Analyzing The Adoption Of Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies, Lia Sorensen
Analyzing The Adoption Of Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies, Lia Sorensen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a business strategy via which a company aligns social and environmental concerns with both its business operations and its interactions with stakeholders. This paper examines how CSR creates value for companies that adopt CSR actions. It focuses on the CSR actions of six companies, five public and one private: Starbucks, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Nike, Unilever (Ben & Jerry's), and Penzeys Spices. In the 2000s, many companies began to see value in CSR and to implement CSR infrastructure and actions. With CSR increasing in popularity, more robust analyses of these initiatives started to …

Expanding Healthcare To Underserved Communities, Hunter Murdock, Colten Dougher
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
According to the Bureau of Health's Workforce Health Resources and Services Administration, there are almost 253 million people who do not have adequate access to healthcare in the United States. While innovations in technology, drug manufacturing, and procedures will continue to make healthcare more affordable and more accessible, policies restricting doctors' and nurses' abilities to practice healthcare are creating barriers that prevent them from utilizing existing technology to reduce healthcare shortages in underserved areas. The underserved populations in America include rural communities, Native Americans, and linguistic minority groups. Many of today's healthcare policy suggestions aim at increasing health insurance coverage …

How Do The Mental Health Services Offered By Usu Pre-Covid19 Compare To The Present?, Casey Mack
Fall Student Research Symposium 2020
How do the mental health services offered by USU pre-COVID19 compare to the present? COVID19 has essentially taken the world and changed it. People are required to stay inside more, there is a decrease in social interaction and there is a political aspect most weren't expecting. This question is important because in such tumultuous time, mental health and mental health services are of utmost importance. Isolation and a change in most every aspect of life can take a toll on someone's mental health. The approach to this project is done with mixed methods. Students majoring in English at Utah State …

Paediatrics Publications
Introduction Up to 40% of orthopaedic injuries in children require a closed reduction, almost always necessitating procedural sedation. Intravenous ketamine is the most commonly used sedative agent. However, intravenous insertion is painful and can be technically difficult in children. We hypothesise that a combination of intranasal dexmedetomidine plus intranasal ketamine (Ketodex) will be non-inferior to intravenous ketamine for effective sedation in children undergoing a closed reduction. Methods and analysis This is a six-centre, four-arm, adaptive, randomised, blinded, controlled, non-inferiority trial. We will include children 4-17 years with a simple upper limb fracture or dislocation that requires sedation for a closed …
