Introduction The development of type 2 diabetes mellitus disproportionately affects South Asian women with prior gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The Lifestyle InterVention IN Gestational diabetes (LIVING) Study is a randomised controlled trial of a low-intensity lifestyle modification programme tailored to women with previous GDM, in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, aimed at preventing diabetes/pre-diabetes. The aim of this process evaluation is to understand what worked, and why, during the LIVING intervention implementation, and to provide additional data that will assist in the interpretation of the LIVING Study results. The findings will also inform future scale-up efforts if the intervention is …

Mexican Americans' Perspectives On "Borderline Diabetes" In Amarillo, Texas, Priscella Pena-Correa
Nursing ETDs
The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of and experiences living with “borderline diabetes” among Mexican American adults residing in or around Amarillo, Texas. Sixteen Mexican Americans who self-identified as having “borderline diabetes” participated. Research questions focused on how participants understood the condition, self-care practices, and recommendations for improving prediabetes healthcare and education. An interpretive description approach was used to analyze data from phone interviews. Principal findings revolved around issues of disclosure vs. secrecy, information seeking, and challenges or “struggle” to change lifestyle, particularly diet. Self-care was managed in a relational way with support of family, friends, …

The transition from prison to the harsh realities of New York City is seldom easy. Finding employment and housing is always a huge challenge but in 2020 COVID-19 has shadowed the incarcerated. As returning New Yorkers, their stories are unique. Ironically, the added obstacles they face have also brought them benefits in the form of the housing they need to survive during a deadly pandemic.

Indigenous Communities in the United States have historically been underserved by traditional mainstream news outlets. To fill this gap, many tribes created their own radio, television and print newsrooms to cover local politics and events, but between Supreme Court rulings and tribal law the press often falls under the influence of tribal governments that hold the purse and editorial strings. In the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, this was true. Their official news outlet, Mvskoke Media, fought to be independent of the government they cover for over a decade. Twice they succeeded. Twice they were under the thumb of censorship. …

INTRODUCTION: Delirium is a potentially preventable disorder characterised by acute disturbances in attention and cognition with fluctuating severity. Postoperative delirium is associated with prolonged intensive care unit and hospital stay, cognitive decline and mortality. The development of biomarkers for tracking delirium could potentially aid in the early detection, mitigation and assessment of response to interventions. Because sleep disruption has been posited as a contributor to the development of this syndrome, expression of abnormal electroencephalography (EEG) patterns during sleep and wakefulness may be informative. Here we hypothesise that abnormal EEG patterns of sleep and wakefulness may serve as predictive and diagnostic …

Lymphatic vasculature is an integral part of digestive, immune and circulatory systems. The homeobox transcription factor PROX1 is necessary for the development of lymphatic vessels, lymphatic valves (LVs) and lymphovenous valves (LVVs). We and others previously reported a feedback loop between PROX1 and vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) signaling. PROX1 promotes the expression of the VEGF-C receptor VEGFR3 in lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). In turn, VEGF-C signaling maintains PROX1 expression in LECs. However, the mechanisms of PROX1/VEGF-C feedback loop remain poorly understood. Whether VEGF-C signaling is necessary for LV and LVV development is also unknown. Here, we report for the …

Black restaurant owners are among the hardest hit by the pandemic in NYC. They are twice as likely not to survive the outbreak, and that is primarily due to institutional racism that was present well before the coronavirus hit the U.S.
Black restauranters benefited less from government programs, have had a harder time accessing funding and say they are left out of many mentorship opportunities. Meanwhile, their patrons face economic uncertainty and are curbing discretionary spending.
Many haven’t been able to pay rent and face commercial eviction. Others say the doors are still open thanks to a flood of support …

As Italy became the first western country hit by the Covid-19 virus in 2020, it struggled to implement policies to protect its citizens. The country went into lockdown changing the face of cities, the habits of its residents and deeply shaking the country’s core. Within this setting, Italians were all asked to stay home and respect a strict lockdown for nearly two months. The first months showed people from the North to the South, come together patriotically, a show of national pride and shared identity as they fought for their country, which was facing a foreign threat. This is quite …

In January 2020, congress passed the PIRATE Act into law, expanding the legal consequences for operating pirate radio tenfold. Although the FCC claims that the reason they are cracking down on pirate stations — that is, stations broadcasting on regulated airwaves without an FCC license — is that they could interfere with emergency messaging, the pandemic has proven otherwise; there is no evidence of pirates interfering with official safety warnings. In fact, most pirate stations are run by immigrants speaking in their native tongue and they have been able to provide vulnerable and underserved communities with the information they need …

The country had a near-record 10.4 million job openings through the end of September, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This shortage may have worsened over the last month to 11 million unfilled jobs in early November, according to estimates by the job posting site Indeed. It used to be that going to the gym was the epitome of health - taking time out of your day to stretch, run, and crunch away stress. But the coronavirus has made this a selfish, even narcissistic, act. It has forced consumers to bring the gym into their living rooms. Now that many Americans have adapted to workouts without the gym, yoga studio, or spin class, it’s hard to imagine that we will return to our previous gym routines. The coronavirus won’t be the death of gyms, but it has permanently changed the industry.

But as the city renews its promise to develop the area, business owners say they are being ignored and quietly forced out.

Significant eosinophilia is a prominent feature in Churg-Strauss syndrome but has not been described in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) in a pediatric patient. We present a biopsy case that confirmed granulomatosis with polyangiitis with significant eosinophilia > 30% on the initial presentation. Etiologies that could account for eosinophilia were excluded during workup. The patient's presentation of pulmonary alveolar hemorrhage, conjunctivitis arthritis, high-titer cytoplasmic antineutrophil, PR3-ANCA antibodies, and cytoplasmic antibodies (cANCA) was consistent with a clinical picture of atypical GPA in a pediatric patient. This case presents a rare opportunity not only due to GPA’s low incidence in the pediatric population but …
