Corporations And The American Polity, Patrick Labossiere
Corporations And The American Polity, Patrick Labossiere
Student Theses and Dissertations
Research on corporate communications’ effects on politics presents an acknowledgement of a relationship between the two topics, leaving a void in the explanation and examination of this topic. The void presents an opening to introduce a conceptual process for how corporations are able to craft communications to influence the American Polity, the democratic social organization within the United States. This research begins with a historical review of how corporations gain prominence in American society, capturing the ability to participate in the democratic social organization of the polity. A qualitative analysis of several conceptual frameworks serves as data, to establish an …

Cardiorespiratory And Metabolic Responses To Hexagonal Barbell Deadlift Task Performed At An Intensity Corresponding To The Anaerobic Threshold, Christopher C. Frankel Dr.
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The objectives of this study were to identify the lactate threshold (LT) and the first ventilatory threshold (VT) during resistance exercise in a discontinuous incremental test, determine if both thresholds were observed at the same relative workload, and to analyze the acute cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses during a separate constant load resistance exercise protocol. Twelve healthy, trained women (n = 6) and men (n = 6) performed a maximal running test on a treadmill followed by three protocols using the hexagonal bar deadlift (HBDL) exercise. The treadmill test was performed to determine maximal oxygen consumption, peak heart rate, and lactate …
Racial Gatekeeping In Country & Hip-Hop Music, Cervanté Pope
Racial Gatekeeping In Country & Hip-Hop Music, Cervanté Pope
University Honors Theses
In mass communication, gatekeeping refers to how information is edited, shaped and controlled in efforts to construct a "social reality." One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one's cultural history and identity-preserved. Blacks and whites similarly attempt to protect or preserve facets of their culture they feel belong to them. What’s different for both of …

Inequality Measures: The Kolkata Index In Comparison With Other Measures, Suchismita Banerjee, Bikas K. Chakrabarti, Manipushpak Mitra, Suresh Mutuswami
Journal Articles
We provide a survey of the Kolkata index of social inequality, focusing in particular on income inequality. Based on the observation that inequality functions (such as the Lorenz function), giving the measures of income or wealth against that of the population, to be generally nonlinear, we show that the fixed point (like Kolkata index k) of such a nonlinear function (or related, like the complementary Lorenz function) offer better measure of inequality than the average quantities (like Gini index). Indeed the Kolkata index can be viewed as a generalized Hirsch index for a normalized inequality function and gives the fraction …

The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) is a large, mobile, circumglobally distributed high trophic level predator that inhabits a variety of remote islands and continental coastal habitats, including freshwater environments. Here, we hypothesize that the barriers to dispersal created by large oceanic expanses and deep-water trenches result in a heterogeneous distribution of the neutral genetic diversity between island bull shark populations compared to populations sampled in continental locations connected through continuous coastlines of continental shelves. We analyzed 1,494 high-quality neutral single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in 215 individual bull sharks from widespread locations across the Indian and Pacific Oceans …

Reviewing Pesticide Impacts On Frogs To Suggest Management Applications In The Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor, Marc Gorman
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
For years, frog populations have been declining due to a variety of anthropogenic sources, including pesticide use. Pesticides work by inhibiting bodily functions in their target pest species, though they frequently have unintentional impacts on other life forms in an ecosystem. Some researchers have evaluated these effects, but their studies mainly focus on finding an LC50 - a concentration that will kill 50% of their test species sample. However, these LC50 levels are often higher than what would be found in nature, and pesticides have been shown to still impact species at lower concentrations. Thus, this study attempted to summarize …

Fractal And Edge-Based Techniques For Kidney Enhancement And Segmentation On Magnetic Resonance Images (Mri), Alaá Rateb Mahmoud Al-Shamasneh
Student Works (2020-2029)
Recently, many rapid developments in digital medical imaging have made further contributions to healthcare systems. However, the segmentation of regions of interest in medical images plays a vital role in assisting doctors in their medical diagnoses and for the early detection of disease. Since health issues related to the kidneys are increasing exponentially, this thesis focused on developing methods for the segmentation of MRI images of the kidney. Kidney images frequently suffer from low contrast, low resolution and noise, and are blur. Hence, it is necessary to enhance the images in order to improve the segmentation. Therefore, the current thesis …

Probing The Impacts Of Ultra-Low Platinum Loadings On Membrane Degradation Mechanisms, Andre J. Spears
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Membrane chemical degradation is one of many factors that can impact fuel cell durability. The fuel cell’s performance and lifetime heavily depends on the membrane and its ability to maintain chemical and mechanical integrity. In Nafion® membranes, hydroxyl radicals are the primary cause of chemical membrane degradation as they attack the membrane’s polymer structure. Radical formation can ensue via peroxide decomposition at the cathode or gases reacting on Pt particles or contaminants like Fe (a fenton's reagent) within the membrane. As radicals attack the membrane’s polymer structure the membrane thins, and fluoride and sulfate ions are released. This consequently …

BACKGROUND: Children of aged fathers are at a higher risk of developing mental disorders. Alterations in sperm DNA methylation have been implicated as a potential cause. However, age-dependent modifications of the germ cells' epigenome remain poorly understood. Our objective was to assess the DNA methylation profile of human spermatozoa during aging.
RESULTS: We used a high throughput, customized methylC-capture sequencing (MCC-seq) approach to characterize the dynamic DNA methylation in spermatozoa from 94 fertile and infertile men, who were categorized as young, 48 men between 18-38 years or old 46 men between 46-71 years. We identified more than 150,000 age-related CpG …

The interrelationships among long-term ambient air pollution exposure, emotional distress and cognitive decline in older adulthood remain unclear. Long-term exposure may impact cognitive performance and subsequently impact emotional health. Conversely, exposure may initially be associated with emotional distress followed by declines in cognitive performance. Here we tested the inter-relationship between global cognitive ability, emotional distress, and exposure to PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 2 (nitrogen dioxide) in 6118 older women (aged 70.6 ± 3.8 years) from the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study. Annual exposure to PM2.5 (interquartile range [IQR] = 3.37 μg/m3) and NO2 (IQR …
