In Civil Resistance and Conflict Transformation, Veronique Dudouet divides responses to oppression into two main analytical categories. The first category refers to conventional actions, including party politics, advocacy or diplomacy, dialogue and negotiations, and litigation. The second category is non-intuitional/contentious actions including: first, nonviolent/unarmed/peaceful resistance through protest and persuasion, non-cooperation, disruptive intervention and creative resistance and second, violent/armed resistance through warfare, terrorist attacks, guerrilla insurgency, protest violence and sabotage. These two sub-categories of resistance operate outside the bounds of conventional political channels and are usually employed by an oppressed minority or disempowered majority by an exclusionary national or foreign actor. …

Does The Ftc Have Blood On Its Hands? An Analysis Of Ftc Overreach And Abuse Of Power After Liu, Angel Reyes, Benjamin Hunter

Recent cases have called the Federal Trade Commission’s (“FTC”) enforcement methods into question. After a circuit split developed in the wake of the Seventh Circuit’s decision in Federal Trade Commission v. Credit Bureau Center, L.L.C., the Supreme Court responded by granting certiorari and consolidating the case with AMG Capital Management, L.L.C. v. Federal Trade Commission. The issue in these cases is whether Section 13(b) of the FTC Act authorizes the FTC to bypass the due process safeguards mandated by Congress in Sections 5 and 19 of the FTC Act and, in doing so, to conduct warrantless searches and seizures, unilaterally …
Police Body Cameras: Go Big Or Go Home?, Ronald J. Coleman
Police Body Cameras: Go Big Or Go Home?, Ronald J. Coleman
Buffalo Law Review
Police body-worn cameras have proliferated since the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, and the recent George Floyd-related protests seem set to continue or even accelerate that trend. Indeed, in her recent Nieves v. Bartlett dissent, Justice Sotomayor took time to note that many departments equip their police officers with body cameras. Body camera advocates have touted the cameras’ benefits, such as decreasing misconduct, reducing complaints, and improving accountability. At the same time, serious concerns have been raised regarding the impact of these cameras on privacy, public resources, and fairness. Despite the increased interest in body cameras, important empirical …
Virtual Trials: Necessity, Invention, And The Evolution Of The Courtroom, Susan A. Bandes, Neal Feigenson
Virtual Trials: Necessity, Invention, And The Evolution Of The Courtroom, Susan A. Bandes, Neal Feigenson
Buffalo Law Review
Faith in the legitimating power of the live hearing or trial performed at the place of justice is at least as old as the Iliad. In public courtrooms, litigants appear together, evidence is presented, and decisions are openly and formally pronounced. The bedrock belief in the importance of the courtroom is rooted in common law, constitutional guarantees, and venerated tradition, as well as in folk knowledge. Courtrooms are widely believed to imbue adjudication with “a mystique of authenticity and legitimacy.” The COVID-19 pandemic, however, by compelling legal systems throughout the world to turn from physical courtrooms to virtual ones, disrupts …

Background: Socioeconomic status (SES) is an important determinant of health globally and an important explanatory variable to assess causality in epidemiological research. The 10th Sustainable Development Goal is to reduce disparities in SES that impact health outcomes globally. It is easier to study SES in high-income countries because household income is representative of the SES. However, it is well recognized that income is poorly reported in low- and middle- income countries (LMIC) and is an unreliable indicator of SES. Therefore, there is a need for a robust index that will help to discriminate the SES of rural households in a …

Suicide By Cop: A Secondary Analysis Using Open-Source News Data, Mckayla Nolan
Theses
Suicide by cop (SBC) has recently become a known phenomenon in the United States, Canada, Australia and parts on the United Kingdom as another way to complete suicide (Patton & Fremouw,2015). SBC refers to when an individual creates a scenario in which law enforcement agencies are called and have to use deadly force in order to protect themselves and the people around the individual who is attempting to take their life (Mohandie, Meloy, & Collins, 2009). The term suicide by cop was originally coined by a police officer and psychologist Karl Harris in 1983 and is the term that is …
Interprofessional Education (Ipe) And Interprofessional Education Collaborative (Ipec) Competencies Of Clinical And Healthcare Administration Undergraduate Students, Shelly Gompf
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The healthcare industry is dependent on the successful delivery of effective education to undergraduate healthcare students. Curriculum and instruction, experiences both inside and outside of the classroom, significantly contribute to students' successful development. A critical element for successful healthcare delivery is to continue building a sustainable culture for all healthcare workers that will increase skills for improved ethics and values, inter-disciplinary understanding of roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teamwork. One teaching approach that continues to produce positive results is interprofessional education (IPE). This teaching method, supported by the experiential learning theory, brings clinical stakeholders together to problem-solve and make …
Why Students Seek Help, Blake Rasmussen
Why Students Seek Help, Blake Rasmussen
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This project researched why students do and do not seek help in a high school class. Typically, when a student is more confident in their abilities, they are more likely to seek out help from a class teacher. Students who are less confident will conversely avoid looking for help, as they are afraid of what their peers and teachers will think of them for asking for help. This invites instructors to come up with ways to increase confidence and self-efficacy in these learners so they will then feel better about asking for help when needed.

Genomic Signatures Of Optimal Growth Temperature In The Family Colwelliaceae, Anais Gentilhomme
Genomic Signatures Of Optimal Growth Temperature In The Family Colwelliaceae, Anais Gentilhomme
Oceanography
The temperature range supporting growth defines a complex physiological phenotype that depends on interactions between an organism's genome and its environment. Its implications are widespread since small changes in optimal growth temperature (OGT) can alter an organism's ability to inhabit an ecological niche. Thus, organisms with extreme thermal growth traits (e.g., psychrophilic, with OGT < 15℃, or thermophilic, with OGT 60 -80℃) may be useful for identifying promising targets when searching for life on other planets, as well as predicting population dynamics in a warming Arctic. We performed comparative genomic analyses of bacteria newly isolated from Arctic sea ice that were affiliated with Colwelliaceae, a family of Gammaproteobacteria that contains many psychrophilic strains, to identify genomic factors that might be used to predict OGT. A phylogenomic analysis of 67 public and 39 newly-sequenced strains, was used to construct an updated phylogenetic tree of Colwelliaceae, of which at least two genera were well represented. To augment the previously reported OGTs of 26 strains, we measured growth rates at −1, 4, 11, and 17 ℃ to determine the OGTs of these 39 new strains of Colwelliaceae. We found that growth rates among all isolates were comparable at −1℃, but varied widely above 10 ℃, indicating higher variability in the ability to tolerate warmer temperatures. To analyze the phenotypic differences on a genomic level, we examined indices of amino acid substitutions that have previously been linked with cold adaptation via an increase in protein flexibility. We found that these indices were significantly correlated with OGT at the whole genome level, although the sign of some correlations were opposite of the predicted positive correlation between temperature and the indices. Using these data, we fit a multiple linear regression model for OGT within the Colwelliaceae family that incorporates the three most informative amino acid indices: GRAVY, Aliphatic Index, and Acidic Residue Proportion. Additionally, a putative cold-adaptive gene cassette was identified that was likely introduced by horizontal gene transfer between two closely related clades with different OGTs. These contributions offer key insights into OGT variability and its underlying genomic foundation in the family Colwelliaceae.

Sowing Change Through The Elderly Herbalist: The Country Of The Pointed Firs (1896) And Rosemary's Baby (1968), Cheyenne Alexis Corty
English
This thesis focuses on Sarah Orne Jewett and Roman Polanski's elderly herbalists as reactionary tropes to feminist movements in either era. Jewett creates elderly herbalist and town scholar, Almira Todd in Country of the Pointed Firs (1896), and Polanski personifies author Ira Levin's Satanist cult member Minnie Castevet (Ruth Gordon) in his film Rosemary's Baby (1969). Jewett's Almira Todd focuses on the positives and negatives inherent within her profession--holistic healer and town matriarch--placing her in the role of the benevolent herbalist. Polanski's Minnie Castevet, in contrast, presents a malevolent herbalist, one who seeks to harm the title character of the …
Metabolite Influence On The Hibernating Arctic Ground Squirrel, Sarah A. Rice
Metabolite Influence On The Hibernating Arctic Ground Squirrel, Sarah A. Rice
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Hibernation is a state of extreme metabolic plasticity and fasting. How hibernators maintain nitrogen homeostasis and regulate amino acid metabolism and how those metabolites influence hibernation physiology remains unknown. We first utilized three approaches to understand nitrogen homeostasis and amino acid metabolism in hibernation: longitudinal metabolic profiling within individual animals over undisturbed torpor, in vivo amino acid isotope tracing in deep torpor, and ¹⁵N isotope tracing in vivo during arousal from hibernation in Arctic Ground Squirrels (AGS). We observed that in vivo whole body production (WBP) of metabolites in deep torpor are profoundly and selectively suppressed in deep torpor. Metabolic …

Recommendations For Training Of Substitute Teachers In The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District, Lulu R. Chamblee
Education
With increasing importance placed on student growth and achievement scores, increasing teacher absenteeism, and increasing amounts of time students spend being taught by substitute teachers, it is surprising that the preparation of substitute teachers does not reflect the significance of the job they have in relation to these trends. Research shows that training can increase substitute teacher effectiveness, which may positively affect student growth and achievement. The purpose of this project was to determine what the substitute teacher onboarding process was, including employment requirements and required training, for substitute teachers in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District and to make recommendations …

Comprehensive Molecular Characterization Of Pan-Cancer Biomarkers, Yifan Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US. Enormous efforts have been devoted to understanding and treat the disease. Overall cancer mortality rate declines in recent years. Meanwhile, the common biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of the general development of cancer remain to be elucidated. Here, we developed computational approaches to integrate multilayer genomic data for better understanding and characterizing cancer. First, utilizing high-through whole-exome sequencing and RNA sequencing data, we developed a systems biology method that combined somatic mutations and gene expression to uncover biomarkers for breast cancer survival prediction. Our method overlaid somatic mutations on …

Paleoseismic Studies Using Geophysical Techniques: Sand Blow Features In Eastern Arkansas, Rauf R. Hussein
Theses and Dissertations
Damaging earthquakes including pre-historical, historical and recent demand paleoseismic studies to improve seismic risk assessment of future destructive earthquakes. Such large earthquakes could damage many structures, kill scores of people and leave others homeless, and devastate the economy. In this study, extensive research efforts are described to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in detecting and identifying specific geological features that are related to historic and prehistoric earthquakes. These features are preserved in the near surface soil and manifested as sand blows, buried paleo-surfaces, venting dikes, and structural faults. They are related to severe cyclic …

I Hear What You're Saying: Evaluating The Couple Validation Training (Cvt), A Brief Behavioral Intervention, Jessica Mckay
Psychology
Couple distress has strong implications for individual, couple, and family functioning. Research has found couple relationship education to be an effective tool in alleviating couple distress, thus improving the quality of couple communication and problem-solving skills. Couple relationship education has been shown to be more cost-effective and less likely to provoke the typical fears couples face when considering couple therapy, increasing the likelihood of receiving needed help. This study used a brief, highly structured behavioral intervention to teach partners to identify and code effective and ineffective ways of communicating. The primary research question sought to determine whether learning a structured …
Sea Otter Diet Composition With Respect To Recolonization, Life History, And Season In Southern Southeast Alaska, Nicole Laroche
Sea Otter Diet Composition With Respect To Recolonization, Life History, And Season In Southern Southeast Alaska, Nicole Laroche
Fisheries
Until translocation efforts in the 1960s, sea otters (Enhydra lutris) were absent from Southeast Alaska due to extirpation by the fur trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. About 400 sea otters were reintroduced to six Southeast Alaska locations, including two sites near Prince of Wales Island in southern Southeast Alaska. The most recent US Fish and Wildlife Service population count, completed in 2012, estimated that about 25,000 sea otters inhabited Southeast Alaska. Sea otters will reduce invertebrate prey biomass when recolonizing an area. By quantifying sea otter diets and caloric intake according to recolonization patterns, we can better understand …
Zooplankton Community Composition In Relation To Environment And Juvenile Salmon Diets In Icy Strait, Southeast Alaska, Emily A. Fergusson
Zooplankton Community Composition In Relation To Environment And Juvenile Salmon Diets In Icy Strait, Southeast Alaska, Emily A. Fergusson
Fisheries
Zooplankton in the nearshore marine habitat function as an important prey resource for many pelagic fishes, are a major component of the lower tropic level, and serve as a vital ecosystem indicator. Understanding how the zooplankton community changes in response to fluctuations in biophysical factors is critical in a changing climate and is important to understanding the dynamics of commercially important upper-trophic level species that depend nutritionally on zooplankton. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Southeast Coastal Monitoring project has surveyed the pelagic ecosystem in eastern Icy Strait monthly from May to August since 1997 to understand how environmental variation affects …
Reproduction And Stress Response Endocrinology In Blue (Balaenoptera Musculus) And Gray (Eschrichtius Robustus) Whales, Valentina Melica
Reproduction And Stress Response Endocrinology In Blue (Balaenoptera Musculus) And Gray (Eschrichtius Robustus) Whales, Valentina Melica
Fisheries
Identification of biomarkers that reflect physiological status is fundamental for assessing population health, as well as providing more accurate estimates of life history parameters. Blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and gray (Eschrichtius robustus) whale populations feed on lower trophic levels and migrate between the eastern Tropical and the eastern North Pacific Ocean. With increasing disturbances (e.g., changing environment and human activities), understanding the stress response, resultant coping mechanisms, and the subsequent effects on reproduction, is of growing importance. While extensive knowledge is available on photo-identification and ecology of these two species, information on physiology is limited and what exists is outdated. This …
