One Hand Washes The Other: Designing Mutually Beneficial Honors Contracts, Antonina Bambina Jan 2020

One Hand Washes The Other: Designing Mutually Beneficial Honors Contracts, Antonina Bambina

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

At their best, honors contracts can be creative, challenging, exceptional learning opportunities for students and faculty. At their worst, they promote busywork that fails to deliver enhanced educational experiences. While I am proud of the many contracts that allowed honors students at my former institution, the University of Southern Indiana, to collaborate on customized learning and deeper relationships with course material and faculty, I also found myself on occasion having to apologize to students or faculty for the stunted, lackluster projects that one party or the other proposed. These conflicting sentiments illustrate why Richard Badenhausen urges the honors community to …

Ethics Of The Advance Euthanasia Directive: Death Within Dementia, Isabella Braga Jan 2020

Ethics Of The Advance Euthanasia Directive: Death Within Dementia, Isabella Braga

Honors Program Theses

By the year 2050, over 131.5 million people worldwide will have dementia. While many dementia patients seek euthanasia as a means of maintaining dignity and autonomy, they are in a difficult position: because physician-assisted euthanasia is administered by a medical professional, in current medical practice, the dementia patient must be euthanized while she is of sound mind. She thus sacrifices years of fulfilled, compos mentis living. With an advance euthanasia directive, the patient can designate a brightline of dementia past which she would like to be euthanized. She would be able to live out her compos mentis years, and have …

The Effects Of Cognitive Training On Behavioral Functioning In Persons With Dementia, Abigail J. Dye Jan 2020

The Effects Of Cognitive Training On Behavioral Functioning In Persons With Dementia, Abigail J. Dye

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Lack of engagement in pleasant activities and negative mood are two factors that decrease quality of life (QoL) for older adults with moderate to severe cognitive impairment. As enhancing QoL has become a primary treatment outcome for individuals with cognitive impairment, investigation into the ability of nonpharmacological interventions to increase engagement and positive mood has come to the forefront of research. Cognitive training is a nonpharmacological intervention that utilizes manualized techniques with the primary goal of enhancing different areas of cognitive function. Although the cognitive benefits of the programs have been widely investigated and established, the potential benefits that cognitive …

Patient Satisfaction With Nurse Versus Non-Nurse Post-Discharge Outreach, Iyore Adonri Jan 2020

Patient Satisfaction With Nurse Versus Non-Nurse Post-Discharge Outreach, Iyore Adonri

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

In today’s current healthcare environment, there has been an extensive focus on patient satisfaction, and healthcare leaders struggle with the options of utilizing a registered nurse or a non-nurse when making outreach follow-up calls to recently discharged patients. Healthcare leaders find that designing, implementing and managing an efficient telephone outreach program can be challenging, however, this has become a necessary aspect of the patient continuum of care plan. Studies demonstrate that patient follow-up post-discharge increases patient satisfaction and their compliance with post-discharge instructions, thereby reducing readmission rates and emergency room visits (Meek, Williams, & Unterschuetz (2018). This quality improvement project …

Extracellular Matrix Nanoparticles Effects On The Lung In Vivo, Brittaney E. Ritchie Jan 2020

Extracellular Matrix Nanoparticles Effects On The Lung In Vivo, Brittaney E. Ritchie

Theses and Dissertations

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition that causes diffuse alveolar damage and a loss of the extracellular matrix (ECM). This leads to pulmonary edema and lung function deterioration. Our lab has created decellularized porcine lung, electrosprayed ECM nanoparticles that have been previously shown to have pro-regenerative capabilities in vitro.

In this study, the ECM nanoparticle effects on young murine lungs were tested in vivo. An ECM nanoparticle suspension, previously used for the in vitro studies, was aerosolized intratracheally into the lungs using a microsprayer. 24 hours later, the lung mechanics, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and histology …

Taking The Water, Alison Ho

Theses and Dissertations

“The baby boomer generation is about to transform into the largest elderly population in human history, changing how everyone lives, large and small. All of this will directly affect recreation and leisure professionals especially in leisure programming” (Sperezza & Banerjee, 2010, p. 197). In 2012, there were 43.1 million people in the United States that were aged 65+ and it is predicted that by 2050, that number will rise to 83.7 million (Ortman, Velkoff, Hogan, 2014). Baby boomers are more physically active than previous generations and many will now live 20% - 25% of their lives in active retirement. There …

Relationship Of Demographic Characteristics Of Occupational And Physical Therapists Towards Their Knowledge And Attitude On Person-Centered Care In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Sadashiv R. Aggarwal Jan 2020

Relationship Of Demographic Characteristics Of Occupational And Physical Therapists Towards Their Knowledge And Attitude On Person-Centered Care In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Sadashiv R. Aggarwal

Theses and Dissertations

The study aimed to assess the relationship of specific demographic characteristics of occupational (OTs) and physical therapists (PTs) with their knowledge and attitudes towards principles of Person-Centered Care (PCC) in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). The study further examined if knowledge and/or attitudinal differences exist between OTs and PTs towards PCC. The proposed descriptive study used the Person-Centered Care theory, which is a holistic (bio-psychosocial-spiritual) health care delivery approach. PCC delivers services that are respectful and individualized, allowing negotiation of care, and offering choice through a therapeutic relationship where persons receiving care are empowered to be involved in health decisions at …

Feasibility And Acceptability Of Focused Breathing For Management Of Anxiety In Parkinson’S Disease, Susan K. Chandler Jan 2020

Feasibility And Acceptability Of Focused Breathing For Management Of Anxiety In Parkinson’S Disease, Susan K. Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Anxiety is recognized as a predominant nonmotor symptom of Parkinson’s disease (PD) which greatly diminishes quality of life. Current treatment is largely pharmacologic and is recognized as rife with undesirable and unsafe side effects. Reviews commissioned by The Movement Disorder Society Task Force on Evidence-Based Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology revealed there was insufficient evidence to make recommendations for the treatment of anxiety. A review of the literature confirmed anxiety in PD is underdiagnosed, undertreated, and under studied. A common element in many of the non-pharmacologic self-managed interventions used by the studies included in the review was …

Video Advance Directives: Growth And Benefits Of Audiovisual Recording, Thaddeus Pope Jan 2020

Video Advance Directives: Growth And Benefits Of Audiovisual Recording, Thaddeus Pope

Faculty Scholarship

The key question in Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health was one of substantiation and evidence: how can the incapacitated patient’s surrogate decision maker prove that the health care decisions she makes on the patient’s behalf are the same health care decisions that the patient would have made for herself? Answering this question, the Court observed that an advance directive would constitute adequate proof because an advance directive constitutes clear and convincing evidence of a patient’s wishes.

Today, clinicians and policymakers no longer focus on the constitutional question of how much evidence state law may require from a patient’s …

Conversation Goals, Communication Satisfaction, And Relational Dynamics While Navigating Alzheimer’S Disease: A Pre- And Post-Diagnosis Dyadic Examination Of Family Communication, Elizabeth A. Spencer Jan 2020

Conversation Goals, Communication Satisfaction, And Relational Dynamics While Navigating Alzheimer’S Disease: A Pre- And Post-Diagnosis Dyadic Examination Of Family Communication, Elizabeth A. Spencer

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Currently there are more than 16 million unpaid Alzheimer’s disease and dementia caregivers in the United States. These caregivers are often family members of the person living with dementia, and as they navigate the process of giving care to the patient, they must also maintain relationships with each other. Families enter the dementia experience with a history of their relational experiences, and their relational experiences potentially change as they navigate family experiences after the dementia diagnosis. Much existing scholarship examining family communication in the context of progressive Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias has focused on the perspectives of one …

Background: Various voice assessment tools, such as questionnaires and aerodynamic voice characteristics, can be used to assess vocal function of individuals. However, not much is known about the best combinations of these parameters in identification of functional dysphonia in clinical settings. Methods: This study investigated six scores from clinically commonly used questionnaires and seven acoustic parameters. 514 females and 277 males were analyzed. The subjects were divided into three groups: one healthy group (N01) (49 females, 50 males) and two disordered groups with perceptually hoarse (FD23) (220 females, 96 males) and perceptually not hoarse (FD01) (245 females, 131 males) sounding …

The Impact Of Nurse Stress, Job Distress, Job Satisfaction And Mood On Patient Outcomes, Madelynne Wright

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study examined the intercorrelations among nursing home healthcare providers’ stress, job distress, job satisfaction, and mood, as well as the relationships between these factors and patient outcomes. Additionally, this study investigated the impact Butler University’s Music First! program had on nurse job perceptions. A total of 63 nurses from 9 long-term care facilities completed questionnaires asking about stress, job distress, and global job satisfaction. Nurses’ depression, anxiety and hostility were also assessed with a 15-item Profile of Mood States questionnaire. Of these 63 nurses, 20 completed the questionnaires at three different time points during the implementation of the Music …

The Effects Of 5-Ht2ar Stimulation On Psychosis-Associated Behaviors In Naive And L-Dopa Treated Hemiparkinsonian Rat, Annique Mclune, Evan D'Almeida Jan 2020

The Effects Of 5-Ht2ar Stimulation On Psychosis-Associated Behaviors In Naive And L-Dopa Treated Hemiparkinsonian Rat, Annique Mclune, Evan D'Almeida

Research Days Posters 2020

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by dopamine (DA) loss. Patients also experience non-motor symptoms, such as PD-associated psychosis (PDAP). Unfortunately, L-DOPA may increase the risk of developing PDAP. Changes to serotonin (5-HT) and particularly 5-HT 2A receptors (5-HT2ARs) might underlie these risks. We used the hemi-parkinsonian rat model to investigate how DA loss, L-DOPA, and 5-HT2AR activation impacts unconditioned responses (head twitch response (HTR), rearing, and locomotor activity) which are all disrupted in preclinical models of psychosis. In Experiment 1, sham or DA-lesioned rats were treated chronically with L-DOPA or vehicle. After L-DOPA washout rats underwent …

Let She Who Has The Womb Speak: Regulating The Use Of Human Oocyte Cryopreservation To The Detriment Of Older Women, Browne C. Lewis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article is divided into three parts. Part I examines the arguments in favor of banning human oocyte cryopreservation. Part II explores the reasons some opponents of human oocyte cryopreservation might give to support restrictions on the use of frozen oocytes. Part III analyzes the possible ethical and legal challenges that may arise in the event that the government seeks to ban the use of frozen oocytes or restrict the use of frozen oocytes based solely on the age of the potential mother.
