Racial-Ethnic Differences In Social Networks And Perceived Support: Measurement Considerations And Implications For Disparities Research, Melissa Flores, John M. Ruiz, Christian Goans, Bert N. Uchino, Michiyo Hirai, Ruben Tinajero, Timothy W. Smith
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Objectives: Racial-ethnic differences in physical/mental health are well documented as being associated with disparities; however, emerging conceptual models increasingly suggest that group differences in social functioning and organization contribute to these relationships. There is little work examining whether racial-ethnic groups respond similarly to classic measures of social networks and perceived support and whether there are significant between-groups differences on these measures.
Method: A multisite, cross-sectional study of 2,793 non-Hispanic White (NHW), non-Hispanic Black (NHB), and Hispanic participants was conducted using common measures of social networks and perceived support. A confirmatory factor analytic model was used to test for the invariance …

Falls are a serious consequence of declining physical function. Otago exercise is a strength and balance training program designed to prevent falls and enhance health status among the elderly. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a 12-week Otago exercise intended to reduce the risk of falls and health status among the elderly with chronic illness in the social elderly institution. This quasi-experimental study employed a pre-and post-test design using a control group. The study involved an intervention group (21 respondents) and a control group (21 respondents). The sample used in this study were elderly living in a social …
What Can The Protection And Advocacy Network Offer To Our Veterans?, David A. Boyer
What Can The Protection And Advocacy Network Offer To Our Veterans?, David A. Boyer
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The desire to compensate veterans predates the establishment of the United States (“U.S.”). In 1636, individuals with disabilities received pensions for defending the Plymouth colony against Native Americans.1 Throughout history, this practice continued, as documented by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”).2 By 1930, President Herbert Hoover signed the Executive Order 5398, which created the Veterans Administration.3 Prior to President Hoover’s signing of that executive order, the available veteran services were divided by three separate governmental agencies: the Veterans’ Bureau, the Pensions Bureau, and the Soldiers’ Home.4 Consequently, that executive order combined all three agencies into one that concentrated …

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is increase effectiveness, create meaningful learning and influence student attitudes in future career pursuit. There are several studies in the literature reporting different aspects of STEM into a PjBL pedagogy. However, the effect of implementing STEM PjBL in terms of improving students’ skills in self-efficacy levels in physics mechanics at high school level has not been demonstrated as expected in the previous literature. This study followed a quasi-experimental research method. Bandura’s social cognitive theory is used to assess and compare the effect of STEM PjBL with conventional teaching method on students’ …

Preferences Of Nursing And Medical Students For Working With Older Adults And People With Dementia: A Systematic Review, M Hebditch, S Daley, J Wright, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Background: A current issue in workforce planning is ensuring healthcare professionals are both competent and willing to work with older adults with complex needs. This includes dementia care, which is widely recognised as a priority. Yet research suggests that working with older people is unattractive to undergraduate healthcare students. Methods: The aim of this systematic review and narrative synthesis is to explore the factors related to healthcare (medical and nursing) student preferences’ for working with older people and people with dementia. Searches were conducted in five databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINHAL, BNI, ERIC. Screening, data extraction and quality appraisal were conducted …

Asian values, the aging population, and financial assistance programs for the elderly form the backdrop for this manuscript. The rationale of this manuscript is to analyze the unexpected findings from the research project “The Evaluation of Project Performance Supported by Older Persons Fund,” which indicated a connection between filial piety, family dynamics, and how family finances were spent and managed. The objective is to study this phenomenon in more detail to elucidate changes in family structures that are traditionally held as the lynchpin of Asian society. The manuscript applied two separate methodologies: Part A is a mixed methods methodology that …
Recommendations For Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Sheryl L. Chatfield
Recommendations For Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Sheryl L. Chatfield
The Qualitative Report
Publications and presentations resulting from secondary analysis of qualitative research are less common than similar efforts using quantitative secondary analysis, although online availability of high-quality qualitative data continues to increase. Advantages of secondary qualitative analysis include access to sometimes hard to reach participants; challenges include identifying data that are sufficient to respond to purposes beyond those the data were initially gathered to address. In this paper I offer an overview of secondary qualitative analysis processes and provide general recommendations for researchers to consider in planning and conducting qualitative secondary analysis. I also include a select list of data sources. Well-planned …

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Students' Perceptions Of The Three Ps In Preparation For Clinical Practice, Michael D. Moon
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
In 2008, advanced pathophysiology, advanced physical health assessment, and advanced pharmacology, were mandated as separate courses in APRN education as part of the joint consensus model (AACN & NCSBN, 2008). Currently there is a lack of evidence that supports completion of the three “Ps” as improving APRN confidence in clinical practice.
To investigate whether the completion of the three “Ps” increases APRN students’ confidence prior to completing their first year clinical courses.

Let’S Talk About Death: Conversation And Bereavement In Late-Life Widows And Widowers [Poster], Bekah Bass
Let’S Talk About Death: Conversation And Bereavement In Late-Life Widows And Widowers [Poster], Bekah Bass
Research in the Capitol
Death is a taboo subject in American society, yet it affects everyone at some point in life. By looking at conversations surrounding death from a sociological perspective, I study the association between conversations about death and the grief of those left behind. Using the Changing Lives of Older Couples dataset, I am conducting a secondary data analysis to study the relationship between talking about death with a spouse before death, and the denial and mental health impacts on the widow after death. By understanding how conversations about death may be related to positive or negative outcomes, we can better support …

Older Adults And Information And Communication Technologies In The Global North, Molly-Gloria R. Harper, Barry Wellman, Anabel Quan-Haase
FIMS Publications
At all ages, people are incorporating information and communication technologies (ICTs) into their lives. It is not that they have stopped talking with each other in-person, it is that ICTs complement their interactions when they cannot be together face-to-face. Since the 1990s, email has provided a routine way to stay in touch and sustain meaningful contact over distance. But not all age groups have adopted ICTs with the same enthusiasm. Research in the Global North has consistently reported that age plays an important role in ICT adoption and use (Anderson and Perrin 2017). For example, older adults have been the …

Longitudinal Diary Data: Six Months Real-World Implementation Of Affordable Companion Robots For Older People In Supported Living, Hannah L. Bradwell, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Companion robots have potential for improving wellbeing within aged care, however literature focuses on shorter-term studies often using relatively expensive platforms, raising concerns around novelty effects and economic viability. Here, we report ecologically valid diary data from two supported living facilities for older people with dementia or learning difficulties. Both sites implemented Joy for All robot animals and maintained diaries for six months. Entries were analysed using thematic analysis. We found robot use increased over the six months, changing from short, structured sessions to mainly permanent availability. Thus previously reported concerns on novelty were not warranted. Both sites reported positive …

A Modified Lean And Release Technique To Emphasize Response Inhibition And Action Selection In Reactive Balance, David A.E. Bolton, Manhoud Mansour
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Assessment of reactive balance traditionally imposes some type of perturbation to upright stance or gait followed by measurement of the resultant corrective behavior. These measures include muscle responses, limb movements, ground reaction forces, and even direct neurophysiological measures such as electroencephalography. Using this approach, researchers and clinicians can infer some basic principles regarding how the nervous system controls balance to avoid a fall. One limitation with the way in which these assessments are currently used is that they heavily emphasize reflexive actions without any need to revise automatic postural reactions. Such an exclusive focus on these highly stereotypical reactions would …
