Historically, swimming pools have been a source of inequity when it comes to the distribution of recreation services in the United States. Many of the problems that correlate with the inequitable allocation of recreation resources including public swimming pools began with ideas about race, geography, poor planning practices and faulty policymaking (Rothstein, 2017). Moreover, one of the primary outcomes of engaged, inclusive planning is equity in the provision of recreation programs and facilities. In this essay, we offer a summary of key legal cases that help address questions related resource allocation related to public swimming pools. Finally, we present a …

Priviledge And Place: An Exploratory Study About Healthcare Bypass Behavior, Jorden Elizabeth Jackson
Priviledge And Place: An Exploratory Study About Healthcare Bypass Behavior, Jorden Elizabeth Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Bypass, or utilizing healthcare outside of one’s community rather than local healthcare, can have serious consequences on rural healthcare availability, quality, and outcomes. Previous studies of the likelihood of healthcare bypass used various individual and community characteristics. This study includes measures for individuals and communities, as well as place-based characteristics. We introduce the social vulnerability of place index (SoVI)—a well-established measure in disaster literature—into healthcare studies to further explain the impact of place on healthcare selection behavior. Additionally, with the use of qualitative data, this study explains why people choose to bypass. By including each of these measures, this study …

Publications and Research
Background: A clear understanding of the macro-level contexts in which education impacts health is integral to improving national health administration and policy. In this research, we use a visual analytic approach to explore the association between education and health over a 20-year period for countries around the world.
Method: Using empirical data from the OECD and the World Bank for 26 OECD countries for the years 1995–2015, we identify patterns/associations between education and health indicators. By incorporating pre- and post- educational attainment indicators, we highlight the dual role of education as both a driver of opportunity as well as of …

Cardiovascular Surgery Practice Remodel: Increasing Job Satisfaction and Reducing Turnover Rates of Advanced Practice Providers
Background: The CVS practice in a Midwestern state had a shift in morale and job satisfaction in their advanced practice providers (APPs). This shift lead to the high turnover rate of 35% in 2018. In an effort to bring a halt to the high turnover rate, and to continue the excellent patient care for which the hospital is known, hospital administration became involved and set up a committee to guide the development of a new CVS APP practice model. The goal was to develop …

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and associated disorders is increasing. Rural residents in the United States have less access to memory care specialists and educational and community resources than in other areas of the country. Over a decade ago, we initiated an interdisciplinary rural caregiving telemedicine program to reach Kentucky residents in areas of the state where resources for supporting individuals with dementia are limited. Telemedicine programs involve a short informational presentation followed by a question and answer session; programs are offered 4 times a year. The purpose of this study was to explore questions asked over 1 year …

Phase Angle Adaptation To Exercise Training In Cancer Patients Undergoing Treatment, Nicholas Harman, Nathaniel Croteau, Reid Hayward
Phase Angle Adaptation To Exercise Training In Cancer Patients Undergoing Treatment, Nicholas Harman, Nathaniel Croteau, Reid Hayward
2020 Graduate Presentations
Phase angle is a measure of cellular resistance and reactance to bioelectrical impedance analysis. This measurement is useful as a marker of cell membrane integrity and is used as a prognostic marker in several clinical populations. Cancer and its related treatments impact cell membrane integrity, leading to poor cell function. Exercise is shown to increase phase angle, resulting in lowered risk of hospitalization and cardiovascular events. However, the effect of chronic exercise training on phase angle in the cancer population is unclear. Purpose: To assess the effect of chronic exercise on phase angle in cancer patients who are actively undergoing …

Regulating Care Robots, Valarie K. Blake
Scholarly Works
Care robots are already assisting the elderly in some nursing homes around the globe and could be in widespread use in hospitals and homes sooner than we think. These robots promise great hope for patients: to help them remain independent, to provide assistance with daily living, to comfort and distract during procedures, to educate, and to be companions during the vulnerable and lonely times in patient lives. Yet, care robots will have unprecedented access to personal lives, combined with designs aimed at winning patient trust and affection, and with recording and sensory capabilities beyond any human. They pose significant risk …

The Families First parenting workshops were developed for caregivers of children recently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The primary site hosts inperson workshops, but webcasts the workshops to remote sites in different areas of the United States. The purpose of this study was to assess whether parents have an increase in knowledge after participating in Families First workshops at a remote site, and to assess whether program quality ratings and child symptom severity are associated with parent knowledge. The current study addressed the following research questions:
1. Do parents participating in the Families First workshops at a remote site …
Cultivating Appropriate Prescribing In A Primary Care House Calls Practice: A Quality Improvement Project, Sarah J. Marzolf
Cultivating Appropriate Prescribing In A Primary Care House Calls Practice: A Quality Improvement Project, Sarah J. Marzolf
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Polypharmacy in the frail elderly can lead to suboptimal management of medical issues. Primary Care Providers (PCPs) often lack knowledge of best practices regarding deprescribing and lack a systematic process for assessing mediation appropriateness. A quality improvement project was developed and executed at Housecall Providers, a home-based primary care practice in Portland, Oregon to facilitate the incorporation of deprescribing into daily practice.
Interventions: Following a literature review, a curriculum was developed and utilized during an educational intervention for PCPs regarding deprescribing best practices. A system for introducing new PCPs to evidence-based deprescribing for the frail elderly. This information …

Notably, the perceived effects and attitudes towards social media can vary with age. Through this proposed study, attitudes and feelings towards social media from 80 individuals, across four age groups, will be compiled from the Mercer and Auglaize county area via survey. An explanation from every participant explaining how social media affects their lives will be provided. From the responses, a better understanding of how social media is perceived to affect society, as well as it’s perceived effect on …
Effect Of Reduced Neurogenesis On Microglial Activation, Amelia Smith
Effect Of Reduced Neurogenesis On Microglial Activation, Amelia Smith
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
The geriatric population of America has grown exponentially in the past century. Health degradations and expensive medical care are characteristic of this population with many of these costs due to age-related cognitive decline. It is essential to completely understand the mechanisms of normal and abnormal aging in the search for treatments for cognitive decline. A reduction of neurogenesis is a common factor in aging, but this reduction is even more drastic in individuals experiencing cognitive decline. It is unclear what effect reduced neurogenesis has on the extracellular environment, including glial cells. In particular, changes in microglial activation could be related …

A Research Proposal: Retirement: When, Why, And Returning To Work, Chelsea M. Lautzenheiser
Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Retirement is a personal decision based on when and why a person is retiring. The average length of life has begun to rise due to medical advances, more education, financial stability, and an overall better way of living. Due to these factors, may the average age of retirement be increasing as well? A survey given to local assisted living centers and work centers may help answer this question. Recently, it has been noted that more elderly are heading back to work after their retirement. Using our survey, we hope to find out if the same factors determining retirement are deciding …

Educational Session To Improve The Knowledge And Confidence Of State Agency Surveyors In Deficiency Citation Of Immediate Jeopardy Findings In Nursing Homes, Aileen Renolayan, Msn, Ma, Rn, Phn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: The oversight of nursing homes is a shared federal-state responsibility. Under the agreement with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS, 2018), state survey agencies assess nursing homes using standard surveys. Several studies indicate that the type of deficiencies issued to nursing facilities varies significantly by state, suggesting inconsistency in the survey process for issuing deficiencies. For example, variation in Immediate Jeopardy (IJ) citations among state agency surveyors has been the subject of reports from the Government Accountability Office (GAO, 2019) and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG, 2014).
Objective: To determine if a 1-hour educational session about …
