The Edwards-Trinity Aquifer System of Texas, USA, one of the world’s most ecologically diverse groundwater systems, contains 14 species (across seven genera) of small, poorly studied freshwater snails. Their underground habitat and microscopic size make them difficult to study and identify. Most published records are from original species descriptions, and some have not been seen since they were described more than 100 years ago. Here we use ~150 new collections, including spring and hyporheic zone sampling from across the Texas portions of the Edwards-Trinity Aquifer System, to update the ranges of these species. Two species were very uncommon, if encountered …

Mineralogy, Fluid Inclusion, And Stable Isotope Studies Of The Hog Heaven Mining District, Flathead County, Montana, Ian Kallio
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The Hog Heaven mining district in northwestern Montana is unique in that it is a high-sulfidation epithermal system containing high Ag-Pb-Zn relative to Au-Cu, with a very high Ag to Au ratio (2,330:1). The deposits are hosted within the Cenozoic Hog Heaven volcanic field (HHVF), a 30 to 36 Ma suite that consists predominantly of rhyodacite flow-dome complexes and pyroclastic rocks. The HHVF is underlain by shallow-dipping siliclastic sediments of the Mesoproterozoic Belt Supergroup. These sediments are known to host important SEDEX (e.g., Sullivan) and red-bed copper (e.g., Spar Lake, Rock Creek, Montanore) deposits rich in Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu-Ba. The HHVF erupted …

Cities And Citizens Seethe: A Case Study Of Local Efforts To Influence Natural Gas Pipeline Routing Decisions, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
This Article explores the reasons local governments find difficulty influencing pipeline-routing decisions. For example, federal law controls interstate natural gas pipeline permitting, which is complicated and inaccessible. State law, particularly in Ohio, heavily favors utilities, in part by preempting local efforts to make local decisions regarding oil and gas development. Finally, the information gaps are enormous between what local governments need to influence pipeline-routing decisions and what is accessible.
This Article addresses barriers to local influence by discussing the efforts of citizens and local governments to influence the routing of NexusSpectra's natural gas transmission pipeline, which was recently constructed and …

Seismic Attribute Fracture Analysis And Thin And Thick-Skinned Structural Controls On The Evolution Of A Foreland Basin - Parrando And Guavio Anticlines, Eastern Cordillera Foothills, Colombia, Ibraheem Khalil Hafiz
Theses and Dissertations
The Parrando and Guavio anticlines are located in the Llanos foothills on the eastern flank of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. This study presents new 3D horizon maps, seismic and stratigraphic interpretations, and 1D burial models based on a 3D seismic volume, 2D seismic lines, and well logs. The Guavio anticline was formed by overlapping Miocene-Pliocene fault-bend folds and inversion of the Guaicaramo normal fault. Unlike previous models, the basement fold is interpreted as formed by a ramp from pre-Cretaceous basement to a double wedge fault probably preceded by a thin-skinned bedding plane thrust fault. A new 1D burial model …

Detecting Geomorphic Change And Stream Channel Evolution On The Sandy River, Oregon, Using Lidar Following Dam Removal In 2007, Lowell Henry Anthony
Dissertations and Theses
Following the removal of Marmot Dam on the Sandy River, Oregon, several Lidar flights were flown over the area of the former reservoir. The resultant sequential DEMs permitted calculation of reach-scale volumetric erosion and aggradation following dam removal. This allows for change detection across the entire affected reach of the former impoundment rather than just at several cross sections. In the first year there was a net loss of blank sediment in the dewatered reach. Subsequent flights show continued degradation of 145,649 m3 as well as aggradation of 6,232 m3. Sediment transport reached quasi-equilibrium in 2012 with …

Investigation On Structural Evolution And Thermal Reaction Of Coal-Based Graphite From Xinhua County, Hunan Province, Li Kuo, Liu Qinfu, Song Botao, Zhang Shuai, Wu Yingke
Coal Geology & Exploration
To investigate the structural evolution and thermal reaction of coal-based graphite with different graphitization, the anthracite and coal-based graphite from Xinhua County, Hunan were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transformation electron microscope(HRTEM), and temperature programmed oxidation (TPO). The results show that carbon structure transformed from the amorphous anthracite to three dimensionally ordered graphite as graphitization degree increases. The coal-based graphite samples with different graphitization degree are composed of multi carbon phases, suggesting a heterogeneous nature of coal-based graphite, and ordered carbon phases were common in higher rank samples, however, defects can still be detected in most metamorphosed coal-based graphite. …

Purple Bench is a middle Eocene fossil locality in the Devil’s Graveyard Formation of the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas. In addition to yielding a range of taxa characteristic of the Uintan North American Land Mammal Age, the Purple Bench locality is noteworthy in documenting a number of endemic species that are known only from the site. Despite the Uintan character of the mammalian fauna, the absolute age of Purple Bench is a matter of debate. This uncertainty stems from the wide interval of time encompassed by current radiometric dates bracketing the Purple Bench locality and from conflicting magnetostratigraphic correlations …

Chapter 7: Wild Places And Irreplaceable Resources: Protecting Wilderness And National Monuments, John C. Ruple
Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources, and the Environment publications
This chapter is really two chapters in one in that it discusses wilderness, both as an idea that has had an evolving meaning, and as a legal construct. This chapter also discusses national monuments on our public lands, another legal construct that has been used to protect a wide range of resources, including wilderness character. To be sure, these areas overlap, but that overlap is far from complete, and the objectives underpinning these two designations, while complimentary, are not identical.

Geochemical And Industrial Properties Of The Kejal Kaolin Deposit, Nw Iran, Tohid Nouri, Rahim Masoumi
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Kejal kaolin deposit, situated in the northwest of Iran, is considered a small part of the Hashtjin hydrothermal zone. The kaolinization process in this deposit has occurred in ignimbritic and volcanic tuff parent rocks in different grades such that severely kaolinized samples can be found in the middle section of the kaolinization profile. Kaolinite is the most abundant clay mineral in the studied samples. Quartz and cristobalite are the main minerals while anatase is the minor mineral of the kaolin samples. Among the major oxides, SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2 show the highest concentrations in kaolin samples. The mass change …

Milton's Plant Eyes: Minimal Cognition, Similitude, And Sexuality In The Garden, Perry Guevara
English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship
This essay turns to minimal cognition, a theoretical extension of embodied cognition, to argue for plant sentience in John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Milton imagines plants as minimally cognitive beings within an affective ecosystem, where they readily enter into the epic poem’s complex circuits of desire with appetites of their own. Specifically, the essay claims that botanical cognition arises at the convergence of two seventeenth-century philosophical systems: the first, Milton’s materialist monism, and the second, Paracelsian medicine, which avers a plant’s therapeutic effect on a human body part sharing morphological resemblance. The essay concludes that Milton’s eroticization of similitude enables a …

Groundwater quality is a crucial parameter for sustainable wetland management. The evaluation of the aquifer vulnerability is important for the protection of groundwater resources. The DRASTIC model is the most significant technique for the assessment of aquifer vulnerability. This study aimed to build a vulnerability map for groundwater of the Salda Lake wetland basin by DRASTIC method in a GIS environment. Seven environmental parameters (depth to water table, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone media, and hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer) were used in the DRASTIC method and GIS was used to constitute a …

A Revision Of The Pelomedusoid Turtle Jainemys Pisdurensis From The Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Lameta Formation Of India, Walter G. Joyce, Saswati Bandyopadhyay
Journal Articles
Background: Jainemys pisdurensis comb. nov. is an extinct pleurodiran turtle from the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) of India, previously referred to Carteremys and Shweboemys. The holotype, an eroded skull, had been collected near the village of Pisdura, south of Nagpur, in Maharashtra State, while all referred shell material originates from coeval sediments exposed at the nearby village of Dongargaon. Initial estimates believed this turtle to either be an early representative of Podocnemididae or a basal representative of Pelomedusoides. Methods: We here figure and describe all specimens that had previously been referred to Jainemys pisdurensis comb. nov. We furthermore re-evaluate the validity …

From 'Wonderful Grandeur' To 'Awful Things': What The Antiquitiesact And National Monuments Reveal About The Statue Statutes And Confederate Monuments, Zachary A. Bray
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
It may be easy, at least for some people who do not live near Confederate monuments in public spaces, to assume that these monuments represent little more than links to a shameful and long-ago past. From this assumption one might then view these monuments as a sort of last stand; the atavistic echo of a country that was, but is no longer, cemented into the present by their monumental form though ultimately doomed to erode in the undefined future. But, unpleasant though it may be to consider or admit, the truth is that many remaining Confederate monuments embody aspects of …

The Palaeozoic sequence in the İstanbul region is made up of a continuous transgressive sedimentary series extending from Ordovician continental clastic rocks to Lower Carboniferous turbidites. The middle part of this sequence consists predominantly of carbonates ranging from shallow marine Upper Silurian limestones to latest Devonian to earliest Carboniferous deep marine limestones and shales. Here, we describe a new Upper Devonian deep marine limestone-siltstone section from the Sarıyer region in the European part of İstanbul. The 37-m thick section located in the campus of the İstanbul Technical University consists at the base of dark micritic limestones interbedded with carbonate-rich siltstones, …

A Taxonomic Revision Of Geoemydid Turtles From Siwalik-Age Of India And Pakistan, Rafaella C. Garbin, Saswati Bandyopadhyay, Walter G. Joyce
Journal Articles
Neogene (Siwalik-aged) deposits from India and Pakistan have yielded many vertebrate fossils, of which most were named during the 19th century, including numerous geoemydid turtles. In contrast to many other faunal components from the Siwaliks, geoemydids have not undergone taxonomic revision for more than a century and most fossils have therefore been believed to correspond to recent taxa. In this study, we conduct a taxonomic revision of all previously described geoemydid material from the Siwalik-age. We propose that all specimens of ‘Clemmys’ from the Siwaliks of Punjab, Pakistan should be identified as Melanochelys sivalensis comb. nov.; that Melanochelys tricarinata var. …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Ambon and Seram islands in eastern Indonesia are located in the convergence zone of three major plates, causing this area to have many geothermal manifestations on the surface. A subsurface geological study on Ambon and Seram has been conducted based on the integration of gravity and magnetic inversion modeling to determine the intrusion of igneous rock as a potential source of geothermal energy. The gravity and magnetic inversion utilized gravity and magnetic anomaly data from the World Gravity Map (WGM) and the Earth Magnetic Anomaly Grid (EMAG), as well as the CRUST 1.0 global earth crust model, as the constraints. …
Late Holocene Paleoflood Hydrology Of The Snake River In The Lower Hells Canyon, Idaho, Kent C. Allen
Late Holocene Paleoflood Hydrology Of The Snake River In The Lower Hells Canyon, Idaho, Kent C. Allen
All Master's Theses
The Snake River watershed spans a large geographic region from the Rocky Mountains to the inland Pacific Northwest, and a comprehensive paleoflood chronology on the mainstem of the river is key to identifying the frequency and magnitude of large prehistoric floods within the region. We examined and compared four sites of slackwater deposits along a 20-km reach of the Lower Hells Canyon on the Snake River, Idaho. The sites contain evidence of up to 34 paleofloods within the last 1700 years. Stratigraphic breaks, soils, and in-situ plant or archaeological materials demarcate distinct layers that represent discrete paleoflood events. Radiocarbon dates …
