Data Driven Development: Analyzing Urban Change Through Construction, Demolition, And Renovation, Nathan Ron-Ferguson
Data Driven Development: Analyzing Urban Change Through Construction, Demolition, And Renovation, Nathan Ron-Ferguson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A communitys urban form is determined by the interaction of transportation networks and adjacent land uses. This relationship has been used to understand and measure a variety of development patterns including urban sprawl with its low population density, segregated land uses, and auto-centric street network. A deeper understanding of development patterns is critical to understanding how cities change and how that change may affect the people residing in those communities. Construction, demolition, and renovation are key indicators of this change and while varying measures of each have been used to gain insight into how communities are changing, they are typically …

We are pleased to announce the publication of the latest issue of Asia Pacific Perspectives. In vol. 16, no. 2 (2020), we present the multifaceted ways in which scholars in the humanities and social sciences are looking at food and culture in the Asia Pacific. Beyond satisfying our curiosity about food trends and consumption patterns both past and present, our latest issue also considers themes important for our understanding of East Asia during the 20th and 21st centuries including global modernity, imperialism, the history of food in East Asia, the history of animal …
Development Of A Composite Sustainability Index For Roadway Intersecttion Design Alternatives In The Uae, Maryam Juma Al-Kaabi
Development Of A Composite Sustainability Index For Roadway Intersecttion Design Alternatives In The Uae, Maryam Juma Al-Kaabi
Theses
Many studies had been carried out to evaluate the sustainability of transportation systems, but little attention was given in these studies to the design of roadway intersections. The objective of this study was to define a framework to assess intersection sustainability from a road-user perspective and to develop a visual tool that helps decision-makers to support a more sustainable design of roadway intersections. Suitable sustainability indicators that would serve as elements in the built framework at the strategic and early planning level were extracted from the literature. The extracted indicators were utilized with relative weights to develop basic dimensional indices …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020 Luwei Jiang et al., published by Sciendo 2020. The burgeoning trend of globalization gives rise to the formation of the manufacturing ecosystem. This study aims to identify the critical factors of sustainable manufacturing for countries and regions across the globe finding their unique ecological niches. From the perspective of the ecological niche, we develop an evaluation system of the manufacturing niche. By using the fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, the critical factors, and its causal relationships of the manufacturing niche can be quantified and visualized. The results indicate that: (1) the evaluation system of the …
Reflective School Library Practitioners: Use Of Journaling To Strengthen Practice, Elizabeth A. Burns
Reflective School Library Practitioners: Use Of Journaling To Strengthen Practice, Elizabeth A. Burns
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Reflection is a skill educators of school librarians hope to foster in their students. Widely used in teacher preparation (Hodgins 2014), reflective journaling is a pedagogical strategy that aligns with the text-based nature of library and information studies coursework, especially as more library schools move online (Kymes and Ray 2012). This study explores use of structured dialogic journaling as a pedagogical approach to inform and shape the reflective practice of pre-service school librarians. Journals were introduced in an early school library methods course and structured using Schon’s Reflective Practitioner model (1987). Additional opportunities to engage with dialogic journals continued through …

The importance of coral reefs (CR) within marine ecosystems has become widely recognized. Although shallow CR are not as abundant in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) as in other areas such as the Caribbean, their uniqueness, singularity, isolation, and conservation status make their conservation highly important. Corals and CR, both shallow and deep, are more widely distributed throughout the GoM than previously thought, providing new venues of research but also new challenges for their sustainable management. They are widely present in the three countries circumscribing the GoM (Cuba, Mexico, and the United States). Corals are also distributed throughout different depths, …

A Comparison Of High-End Methods For Topographic Modelling Of A Coastal Dune Complex, Chen Suo, Eugene Mcgovern, Alan Gilmer, Conor Cahalane
Articles
In recent years, increasing tourism and development in the coastal dune area of the South East of Ireland have resulted in greater pressure on the environment, resulting in issues including soil erosion, flooding and habitat loss. Topographic mapping across a dune field is important for the development of targeted land management actions that maintain biodiversity and ecological functions. Developments in surveying technology, including LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and aerial surveying from Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), have enabled high-resolution and high-accuracy spatial data to be gathered quickly and relatively easily for 3D topographic modelling of a coastal dune complex. …

(Re)Visions Of The Outre-Mer: Looking At The Male Gaze In Jacques Feyder’S Le Grand Jeu (1934), Barry Nevin
Articles
Cinéma colonial is regarded by certain scholars as a highly conventionalised and commercialised film practice that grants spectators a sense of control over the potentially threatening colonial Other, and Belgian director Jacques Feyder has been subject to particularly harsh criticism in this regard. This article argues that Feyder’s Le Grand Jeu (1934), which depicts a young legionnaire’s relationship with a cabaret singer who bears an uncanny resemblance to a previous lover who jilted him in Paris, challenges dominant tendencies in portrayals of gender and colonialism in French cinema of the 1930s. Drawing on the relationship between Laura Mulvey’s theorisation of …

Teacher Identity And The Core: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Relationship Between Teacher Identity And Lesson Planning In The Common Core Era, Casie Ruth Wise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
With reports of teacher shortages across many states, the discussion in education turns to how to retain high-quality teachers. The duration that teachers remain in classroom positions is decreasing, and the high turnover rate has a direct impact on student performance. Socially and politically teachers are scrutinized for declining test scores which mostly recently led to a major reform shift known as Common Core. The continued scrutiny and micromanagement through reform changes have a substantial impact on the professionalization of teaching and the professional identity of teachers themselves. Through a pragmatic lens, narrative inquiry was used to better understand how …
Childhood As A Philosophical Means To A Political End: Liberalism, Stability, And The Deficiency Model Of Childhood, Jonathan Wurtz
Childhood As A Philosophical Means To A Political End: Liberalism, Stability, And The Deficiency Model Of Childhood, Jonathan Wurtz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls tells us that an important element of any political theory of justice is its capacity to generate its own support. That is to say that the principles of justice theorized by political philosophers, when adopted by a society, ought to inspire individuals to act in accordance with them. A theory of justice whose principles does not generate its own support would be, in this sense, unstable and as a result, rejected by rational liberal standards. In this dissertation, I criticize the stability of Rawlsian liberal theory by first showing its reliance on the …

The Spatial Ecology And Genetics Of Copperhead Snakes (Agkistrodon Contortrix) In An Urban Forest, Malle F. Carrasco-Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
As global population increases and metropolitan areas grow, natural habitats are progressively fragmented, isolated, and modified. Species residing in urban areas face novel challenges compared to conspecifics in undisturbed habitats. Animals in and around urban areas often modify behavior and space use to reduce anthropogenic disturbance. Further, populations may be isolated from other suitable habitats, potentially reducing opportunities to mate with non-related individuals. Although the consequences of urbanization have been extensively studied in birds and mammals, less is known about limited mobility animals, such as reptiles. Reptiles, specifically snakes are particularly vulnerable in urban areas because of their decreasing populations, …

Predicting The Adoption Of Connected Autonomous Vehicles By Transportation Organizations Using Peer Effects, Jesse Simpson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation presents and tests a methodology for predicting the adoption rate of Connected Autonomous Trucks (CATs) in transportation organizations using peer effects. There are a number of different factors that must be considered when developing innovation adoption models for organizations. This dissertation briefly describes each of the relevant variables and combines them into a discrete choice model for predicting the adoption rate of CATs by transportation organizations. The model incorporates new peer effect modeling techniques to simulate competition and the informal communication network. A stated-preference survey is conducted, and information from 400 freight transportation organizations is gathered. The survey …

Alaska National Parks And Indigenous Peoples: Collaboration For A Protected Future, Siobhan Mctiernan
Alaska National Parks And Indigenous Peoples: Collaboration For A Protected Future, Siobhan Mctiernan
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This research examines the relationships between National Parks and Indigenous communities across the state of Alaska. National Parks as a government agency can be perceived in a negative way; but in Alaska, while there are issues and limitations, parks are going beyond policy guidelines to work with communities and help build a resilient future for both the parks and the local people. This work dives into the National Parks policies and practices, projects resulting from engagement of community stakeholders, perceptions of engagement, community capitals, and sustainable development. In particular, the study investigates how these policies, practices, and interactions ultimately contribute …
Festivals As A Sustainable Development Tool: Case Study Of Teriberka, Russia, Maria Monakhova
Festivals As A Sustainable Development Tool: Case Study Of Teriberka, Russia, Maria Monakhova
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Sustainable development refers to positive economic, social, and environment changes brought both locally and globally, creating a better world for individuals and future generations. Sustainable development in the Arctic shares the same approach, yet the smallness and remoteness of the Arctic regions often present a challenge to its implementation (Larsen & Huskey, 2015). I believe that the remarkable beauty, culture, history, and geography of these territories may generate positive returns for sustainable development through the organization of festivals. This paper examines the Teriberka festival taking place in a small same-name village in the Russian Arctic. The questions raised are what …

Utilization Of Machine Learning Algorithms To Support Retail Chain Store Location Decisions, Petr Grin
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Businesses use GIS software to build spatial business models to have possibility to analyze customers, competitors or markets not only in terms of finance, but also in terms of their behavior in space. Specifically, geomarketing methods are used to maximize profit when searching for places to open new factories, shops, restaurants, or expand chain of cafes. The main geomarketing approach is to identify the optimal location based on socio-economic data, as well as on the criteria that are necessary for this type of business (suitability model).
Traditionally the Maxent model, a type of an ecological niche model (ENM), is used …
A Ground Based Investigation Of Snow Metamorphism Using An Energy Flux Model And Hyperspectral Imaging Across Cropland, Grassland And Barren Surface In Northeast Iowa, Ayan Sasmal
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Snow is unstable under natural environmental conditions; it undergoes metamorphism that can be measurable with an energy flux model. The demand for snow research is increasing due to its importance for maintaining Earth’s energy balance and hydrological applications. Snow metamorphism is a process of transformation of snow particles with an expense of surface free energy. Very few studies have been completed on snow metamorphism in grassland, cropland and barren surfaces that needs farther investigation. In this study, an attempt was made to measure winter snow metamorphism with physical based model and detecting snow metamorphism by using hyperspectral imaging spectroradiameter in …
