Elevating Equity: Strategies From State-Level Clean Energy Standards In The United States, Spencer Burget Jan 2020

Elevating Equity: Strategies From State-Level Clean Energy Standards In The United States, Spencer Burget

Pitzer Senior Theses

I compare strategies for equity in state-level clean energy standards across the United States. I avoid adopting an explicit definition of equity because I do not attempt to evaluate the impacts of these policies. Rather, I analyze how different states are forging their own definitions of equity within their clean energy policy. Specifically, I present case studies of four early adopters that have championed equity in their clean energy transition. First, New Mexico offers a unique strategy for protecting displaced fossil fuel workers through power plant securitization. Next, California’s robust policy context demonstrates how to minimize the financial impact of …

Beyond Never-Never Land: Integrating Lidar And Geophysical Surveys At The Johnston Site, Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, Tennessee, Usa, Henry R. Edward, Alice P. Wright, Sarah C. Sherwood, Barrier R. Casey, Stephen B. Carmody, Christopher Van De Ven Jan 2020

Beyond Never-Never Land: Integrating Lidar And Geophysical Surveys At The Johnston Site, Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, Tennessee, Usa, Henry R. Edward, Alice P. Wright, Sarah C. Sherwood, Barrier R. Casey, Stephen B. Carmody, Christopher Van De Ven

Anthropology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Archaeologists often use near-surface geophysics or LiDAR-derived topographic imagery in their research. However, rarely are the two integrated in a way that offers a robust understanding of the complex historical palimpsests embedded within a social landscape. In this paper we present an integrated aerial and terrestrial remote sensing program at the Johnston Site, part of the larger Pinson Mounds landscape in the American MidSouth. Our work at Johnston was focused on better understanding the history of human landscape use and change so that we can begin to compare the Johnston Site with other large Middle Woodland (200 BC-AD 500) ceremonial …

‘The Oracular Tale’ And The Oracles Of The Greeks: Storytelling, Conjecture, And Oracular Ambiguity In Herodotus’ Histories And Its Historical And Cultural Context, Daniel J. Crosby Jan 2020

‘The Oracular Tale’ And The Oracles Of The Greeks: Storytelling, Conjecture, And Oracular Ambiguity In Herodotus’ Histories And Its Historical And Cultural Context, Daniel J. Crosby

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I investigate the belief in the power of prophecy in ancient Greece. More specifically, I study how the ancient Greeks used oracles, like those of the famous oracle at Delphi, to make their past, present, and future knowable. I analyze the stories about oracles from Herodotus’ Histories as well as Thucydides and the corpus of Greek inscriptions using a theory of storytelling called narratology. With this theory, I show that all stories about oracles are expressions of the same basic plot whether a narrator employs all of its typical episodes or leaves some of them implied. Further, …

"The Utmost Strength I Can Bear": Strategies And Psychological Costs Of Mothering Within Political Violence, Cindy A. Sousa, Mona El-Zuhairi, Manahil Siddiqi Jan 2020

"The Utmost Strength I Can Bear": Strategies And Psychological Costs Of Mothering Within Political Violence, Cindy A. Sousa, Mona El-Zuhairi, Manahil Siddiqi

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Though certainly not women’s only identity or set of responsibilities for women in conflict settings, political violence creates distinct challenges for mothers due to the additional burdens of care-taking in these contexts. Yet, given the paucity of research on the topic, we still are operating without a clear understanding of how political violence jeopardizes maternal well-being and care-taking practices. Drawing on feminist perspectives on mothering, in the analyses presented here, authors use content analysis to explore mothering and political violence from five focus groups with women in Palestine. Results demonstrate the considerable suffering mothers and children endure in war; the …

The Enigmatic Curvature Of Central Iberia And Its Puzzling Kinematics, Daniel Pastor-Galan, Gabriel Gutierrez-Alonso, Arlo Brandon Weil Jan 2020

The Enigmatic Curvature Of Central Iberia And Its Puzzling Kinematics, Daniel Pastor-Galan, Gabriel Gutierrez-Alonso, Arlo Brandon Weil

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The collision between Gondwana and Laurussia that formed the latest supercontinent, Pangea, occurred during Devonian to early Permian times and resulted in a largescale orogeny that today transects Europe, northwest Africa, and eastern North America. This orogen is characterized by an "S" shaped corrugated geometry in Iberia. The northern curve of the corrugation is the well-known and studied Cantabrian (or Ibero-Armorican) Orocline and is convex to the east and towards the hinterland. Largely ignored for decades, the geometry and kinematics of the southern curvature, known as the Central Iberian curve, are still ambiguous and hotly debated. Despite the paucity of …

Volunteered And Crowdsourced Geographic Information: The Openstreetmap Project, Michela Bertolotto, Gavin Mcardle, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Articles

Advancements in technology over the last two decades have changed how spatial data are created and used. In particular, in the last decade, volunteered geographic information (VGI), i.e., the crowdsourcing of geographic information, has revolutionized the spatial domain by shifting the map-making process from the hands of experts to those of any willing contributor. Started in 2004, OpenStreetMap (OSM) is the pinnacle of VGI due to the large number of volunteers involved and the volume of spatial data generated. While the original objective of OSM was to create a free map of the world, its uses have shown how the …

Breaking The Silence: Why International Organizations Should Acknowledge Customary International Law Obligations To Provide Effective Remedies, Kristina Daugirdas, Sachi Shuricht Jan 2020

Breaking The Silence: Why International Organizations Should Acknowledge Customary International Law Obligations To Provide Effective Remedies, Kristina Daugirdas, Sachi Shuricht

Book Chapters

To date, international organizations have remained largely silent about their obligations under customary international law. This chapter urges international organizations to change course, and to expressly acknowledge customary international law obligations to provide effective remedies. Notably, international organizations’ obligations to afford effective remedies need not precisely mirror States’ obligations to do so. Instead, international organizations may be governed by particular customary international law rules. By publicly acknowledging obligations to afford effective remedies, international organizations can influence the development of such particular rules. In addition, by acknowledging obligations to afford effective remedies—and by actually providing effective remedies—international organizations can rebut arguments …

After Forty Years Of Antitrust Revision And Apple V. Pepper, What Now Illinois Brick?, Jeffrey L. Harrison Jan 2020

After Forty Years Of Antitrust Revision And Apple V. Pepper, What Now Illinois Brick?, Jeffrey L. Harrison

UF Law Faculty Publications

Nineteen seventy-seven was a paradigm-shifting year in antitrust law. Decisions by the Supreme Court greatly limited the type of parties who could successfully bring antitrust actions and what types of activities would violate the antitrust laws. First, in January of that year, the Court, in Brunswick v. Pueblo Bowl-O-Mat, ruled that to mount a case the plaintiff had to have suffered an antitrust injury. In other words, even if the antitrust laws were violated, the party raising the issue had to have suffered the type of harm the laws were designed to avoid. Then in a fourteen day span the …

The Political Economy Of Corporate Law And Governance: American And Korean Rules Under Different Endogenous Conditions And Forms Of Capitalism, Robert J. Rhee Jan 2020

The Political Economy Of Corporate Law And Governance: American And Korean Rules Under Different Endogenous Conditions And Forms Of Capitalism, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

Advanced economies operate under different forms of capitalism and social order. Corporate law is fixed only insofar as a country’s political economy and social organization are static. This article explains why an advanced economy may choose inefficient rules. Korean rules are the product of past industrial development policies and current social-political-economic conditions; endogenous conditions align corporate law with nationalistic sentiments and the public interest. The cost of this policy is diminution of firm value. The benefit is the erection of a plausible distinction between rule- and fact-based control of key corporate groups. This system maintains de facto national control of …

What Happened To Grandma’S House: The Real Property Implications Of Dying Intestate, Danaya C. Wright Jan 2020

What Happened To Grandma’S House: The Real Property Implications Of Dying Intestate, Danaya C. Wright

UF Law Faculty Publications

Studies have shown that intergenerational wealth transmission significantly affects wealth concentration and the growing wealth gap. Of the two million households that received an inheritance or a substantial inter vivos gift each year, roughly half are small, under $50,000, while transfers of $1 million or more account for only 2% of the transfers. Yet, those 2% of inheritances over $1 million comprise 40% of total wealth transferred. As scholars continue to examine the role of inheritance in the alarming wealth gap, few are focusing on how the laws of intestacy might exacerbate the gap by leading to greater wealth loss …

Children’S Equality Rights: Every Child’S Right To Develop To Their Full Capacity, Nancy E. Dowd Jan 2020

Children’S Equality Rights: Every Child’S Right To Develop To Their Full Capacity, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

Children are born equal. Yet as early as eighteen months, hierarchies emerge among children. These hierarchies are not random but fall into patterns by race, gender and class. They are not caused nor voluntarily chosen by children or their parents. The hierarchies grow, persist, and are made worse by systems and policies created by the state, perpetuating the position of the privileged and continuing the disadvantage of the subordinated. Children’s equal right to develop to their capacity is severely undermined by policies and structures that hamper and block the development of some by creating barriers and challenges or failing to …

Assessing Inequitable Urban Heat Islands And Air Pollution Disparities With Low-Cost Sensors In Richmond, Virginia, Andre M. Eanes, Todd R. Lookingbill, Jeremy S. Hoffman, Kelly C. Saverino, Stephen S. Fong

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Air pollution and the urban heat island effect are consistently linked to numerous respiratory and heat-related illnesses. Additionally, these stressors disproportionately impact low-income and historically marginalized communities due to their proximity to emissions sources, lack of access to green space, and exposure to other adverse environmental conditions. Here, we use relatively low-cost stationary sensors to analyze PM2.5 and temperature data throughout the city of Richmond, Virginia, on the ten hottest days of 2019. For both hourly means within the ten hottest days of 2019 and daily means for the entire record for the year, the temperature was found to …

Automating The Boring Stuff: A Deep Learning And Computer Vision Workflow For Coral Reef Habitat Mapping, Jordan Patrick Pierce Jan 2020

Automating The Boring Stuff: A Deep Learning And Computer Vision Workflow For Coral Reef Habitat Mapping, Jordan Patrick Pierce

Master's Theses and Capstones

High-resolution underwater imagery provides a detailed view of coral reefs and facilitates insight into important ecological metrics concerning their health. In recent years, anthropogenic stressors, including those related to climate change, have altered the community composition of coral reef habitats around the world. Currently the most common method of quantifying the composition of these communities is through benthic quadrat surveys and image analysis. This requires manual annotation of images that is a time-consuming task that does not scale well for large studies. Patch-based image classification using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can automate this task and provide sparse labels, but they …

Stickiness As Methodological Condition, Cala Coats Jan 2020

Stickiness As Methodological Condition, Cala Coats

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Stickiness is introduced as a cultural concept, affective condition, and performative practice. The author suggests a process of methodological conditioning rooted in responsiveness and attunement in response to shared vulnerability embedded in precarity. Drawing from Felix Guattari’s ethico-aesthetic paradigm, new materialisms, and affect theory, the author invites readers to engage with a narrative score as an aesthetic pedagogical exercise. The score and additional provocations act as creative material for connective and collective performances tracing and creating encounters across time and space.

Bringing Relevance Back To Consumer Bankruptcy, Nathalie Martin

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

This Paper was presented at the Seventeenth Annual Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal Symposium in February of 2020. Less than a month later, all or most travel had ceased and many of us began the process of social distancing and restructuring our lives in the face of the coronavirus. No one could have predicted this event and its effects on the world are both profound and unknown. The virus has uncovered or at least highlighted vast inequalities in our entire economic system, including consumer credit systems. While some of us lament not being able to see our friends or teach live …

Part 4: Youth Mental Health In Virginia, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

Over the last decade, an increasing number of young people reported being anxious or depressed. And now, the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated closing schools, curtailing extracurricular activities and limiting social contacts for many of Virginia’s youth. In this chapter, we explore the state of youth mental health in the Commonwealth and gauge how our younger residents are faring during the pandemic. We find that there is an increasing need for youth mental health services and discuss what can be done to help those who could benefit the most.

What Impedes The Success Of Late Mover It Clusters Despite Economically Favorable Environments? A Case Study Of An Indian It Cluster, Harini Mittal, Punit Saurabh, Devang Rohit, Kathak Mehta

Publications and Research

The Information Technology (IT) industry in India, is one of the major contributors to the country’s growth story. It is organized in a few strong and dominant clusters across the country. Recent research focuses on the emergence, growth and success of the seven big IT clusters that account for 96.55  of total software exports from the country. Unlike the six successful late mover clusters, there are several other late mover IT clusters that have not experienced similar growth. Why do some of the late mover IT clusters in India succeed while others fail to take off despite favorable economic conditions? …

A Feel For The Space: Engagement With The Built Environment Of Treatment Spaces Among Individuals In Recovery, James Richey Jan 2020

A Feel For The Space: Engagement With The Built Environment Of Treatment Spaces Among Individuals In Recovery, James Richey

Public Health Theses

Background

Treatment spaces for substance use disorders (SUD) are diverse with respect to treatment modality and population served. However, there is a lack of literature describing the design of treatment spaces and treatment engagement. This project aims to identify how the built environment of SUD treatment spaces play a role in treatment acceptability, retention, and outcomes.

Methods

We conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with individuals in outpatient SUD treatment in southern Connecticut. These interviews explored individuals’ experience with the built environment of treatment spaces and facilities, including architectural and design-related features (e.g., functionality, spatial arrangement), and how space influences adherence to …

Protecting The Protector: Mapping The Key Terrain That Supports The Continuous Monitoring Mission Of A Cloud Cybersecurity Service Provider, Chris Bush

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Key terrain is a concept that is relevant to warfare, military strategy, and tactics. A good general maps out terrain to identify key areas to protect in support of a mission (i.e., a bridge allowing for mobility of supplies and reinforcements). Effective ways to map terrain in Cyberspace (KT-C) has been an area of interest for researchers in Cybersecurity ever since the Department of Defense designated Cyberspace as a warfighting domain. The mapping of KT-C for a mission is accomplished by putting forth efforts to understand and document a mission's dependence on Cyberspace and cyber assets. A cloud Cybersecurity Service …

The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

David Orr, in an article on ecological intelligence reminds us that the modern world was shaped by people who did not understand that our social and economic systems could not coexist with the rest of the biological or natural systems on Earth (Orr, 1994). My research is rooted in Orr’s argument and discovering ways to shift this degrading paradigm. With my belief in the power of education in empowering youth and my background in environmental and climate change studies, I see a future in great need of people who holistically understand the functions of all types of systems and can …
