Transmission And Transformation Of The Eusebian Gospel Apparatus In Greek Medieval Manuscripts, Jeremiah Coogan
Transmission And Transformation Of The Eusebian Gospel Apparatus In Greek Medieval Manuscripts, Jeremiah Coogan
Jesuit School of Theology
Scholars have often assumed that the Eusebian apparatus was defunct and ignored in the Middle Ages. I argue, however, that Greek manuscripts offer evidence for readers’ ongoing use of the Eusebian apparatus. While the transmission of the Eusebian apparatus was subject to error, users maintained the functionality of the Eusebian system. Readers adapted the apparatus in order to make it a better resource for their reading of the gospels. Trans-formations of the Eusebian system are part of its reception history, illuminating how readers used Eusebius’s project. They demonstrate both the continued vitality of the appa-ratus and medieval readers’ vibrant interest …

Fireanalyst: An Effective System For Detecting Fire Geolocation And Fire Behavior In Forestsusing Mathematical Modeling, Yücel Güllüce, Rahmi̇ Nurhan Çeli̇k
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study proposes an effective new fire detection method and monitoring software for an early-warning fire detection system aimed at valuable forested areas, such as botanical parks or high conservation value forests, particularly those with boundaries. These critical forested areas need to be appropriately managed because they contain large concentrations of biological diversity, including threatened or endangered species, which are very susceptible to fire outbreaks; thus, early detection of fire and rapid response have a very important place in the fight against fire in those areas. In this proposed system, special detectors with state-of-the-art multispectral infrared technology and mathematical modeling …

Testing Glacial Isostatic Adjustment Models Of Last-Interglacial Sea Level History In The Bahamas And Bermuda, Daniel R. Muhs, Kathleen R. Simmons, R. Randall Schumann, Eugene S. Schweig, Mark P. Rowe
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Part of the spatial variation in the apparent sea-level record of the last interglacial (LIG) period is due to the diverse response of coastlines to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) processes, particularly where coastlines were close to the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the past two glacial periods. We tested modeled LIG paleo-sea levels on New Providence Island (NPI), Bahamas and Bermuda by investigating emergent coral patch reefs and oolitic/peloidal beach deposits. Corals with closed-system histories collected from patch reefs on NPI have ages of 128-118 ka and ooids/peloids from beach ridges have closed-system ages of 128-116 ka. Elevations of patch reefs …

Community Media In The United States: Fostering Pluralism And Inclusivity In Challenging Times, Michael Huntsberger
Community Media In The United States: Fostering Pluralism And Inclusivity In Challenging Times, Michael Huntsberger
Faculty Publications
For most Americans, public service media (PSM) are synonymous with National
Public Radio for radio and audio and Public Broadcasting Service for television
and video. However, these national services do not fully circumscribe the PSM
sphere in the United States. US community media are non-commercial, locally
controlled outlets that produce content intended for local audiences, most often
focused on local concerns associated with housing, education, government and the
arts. This study provides an overview of the present state of community media
in the United States. It draws on a variety of sources, including data from the
industry, and from the …

Life in Hampton Roads: Politics, Policy and COVID-19 Response
The survey included several questions that provide a window into the views of Hampton Roads citizens concerning policy choices and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic response. Overall and on most issues the public was quite divided, with divisions often falling along party lines, but President Trump and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) seemed to elicit the strongest negative and positive responses, respectively. A substantial majority approved of Governor Northam’s timing on the initial stay-at-home order, and respondents leaned toward the view that additional restrictions on public activity should …

An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones
An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A useful marker for recognizing the impact that ethnic groups make to the social and cultural characteristics of a city are the institutions and material landscapes created by those groups. In northern Kentucky, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, German immigrants and their descendants in the city of Covington established institutions such as breweries, saloons, social associations, and churches that became the heart of ethnic neighborhoods and shaped the form of the landscape. This research examines institutional and cultural landscape markers of German cultural identity in the city of Covington, Kentucky, from 1860 to 1920. Demographic and spatial data …

Planting Date, Cultivar, Seed Treatment, And Seeding Rate Effects On Soybean Growth And Yield, Thandiwe Nleya, Matthew Schutte, David Clay, Graig Reicks, Nathan Mueller
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield is a function of many factors including genetic attributes of the cultivar, environmental conditions, and management practices. Temporally variable weather patterns in North America, especially in the northern Great Plains, have resulted in the re-examination of how spring production practices interact with the environmental conditions to influence yield. This study evaluated the impact of four plantings dates, four seeding rates, and two soybean maturity groups (MGs) using treated and untreated (control) seed on soybean growth, seed yield, and composition. The study was conducted at Volga, SD, in 2014, 2015, and 2016. The planting …

CRISPR–Cas is an anti-viral mechanism of prokaryotes that has been widely adopted for genome editing. To make CRISPR–Cas genome editing more controllable and safer to use, anti-CRISPR proteins have been recently exploited to prevent excessive/prolonged Cas nuclease cleavage. Anti-CRISPR (Acr) proteins are encoded by (pro)phages/(pro)viruses, and have the ability to inhibit their host’s CRISPR–Cas systems. We have built an online database AcrDB (http://bcb.unl.edu/AcrDB) by scanning ∼19 000 genomes of prokaryotes and viruses with AcrFinder, a recently developed AcrAca (Acr-associated regulator) operon prediction program. Proteins in Acr-Aca operons were further processed by two machine learning-based programs (AcRanker and PaCRISPR) to obtain …

Expensive Patients, Reinsurance, And The Future Of Health Care Reform, Govind Persad
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
In 2017, Americans spent over $3.4 trillion-nearly 18% of gross domestic product-on health care. This spending is unevenly distributed: Almost a quarter is spent on the costliest 1% of patients, and almost half on the costliest 5%. Most of these patients soon return to a lower percentile, but many continue or economic, analysis of existing and proposed options for sharing expensive patients' costs. Third, it bridges the disconnected literature on reinsurance, limit setting, and health care financing, identifying how proposals in these different areas intersect. to incur health care costs in the top percentiles year after year. Critical Media Effects Framework: Bridging Critical Cultrual Communication And Media Effects Through Power, Intersectionality, Context, And Agency, Srividya Ramasubramanian, Omotayo O. Banjo
Media Studies - Open-Access Faculty Scholarship
In this essay, we advance the Critical Media Effects (CME) framework as a way of bridging two major subfields of communication that seldom speak to one another: media effects scholarship and critical cultural communication. Critical Media Effects is situated within the dominant mode of social scientific theorizing within media effects scholarship and draws on four key interrelated concepts from critical cultural communication: power, intersectionality, context, and agency. Critical Media Effects advocates for greater reflexivity, rigor, and nuance in theorizing about media effects to better respond to the complexity and dynamicity of emerging global sociopolitical mediated contexts. Recommendations, salient examples, and …
Transitioning From Emergency Remote Learning To Deep Online Learning Experiences In Geography Education, Richard B. Schultz, Michael N. Demers
Transitioning From Emergency Remote Learning To Deep Online Learning Experiences In Geography Education, Richard B. Schultz, Michael N. Demers
Publications & Research
Recent events resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic precipitated a triage-like environment wherein experienced faculty were forced to convert courses rapidly to online venues. This unexpected circumstance forced educators to adopt different learning theories of which they were largely unaware. The results were predominantly unsatisfactory for both learner and educator. This paper provides perspectives to this unfortunate circumstance, describes positive and negative aspects of the experiences, presents best practices for deep online learning, and challenges geography educators to learn how instructional design for online courses can be leveraged. The goal is to provide a forum for online learning in geography education.

Hyracoidea From The Middle Miocene Hominoid Locality Of Paşalar (Nw Turkey), Martin Pickford, Serdar Mayda, Berna Alpagut, Fatma Arzu Demi̇rel, Ayşegül Şarbak, Tümel Tanju Kaya
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Previously available samples of Hyracoidea from Paşalar (MN 6, Middle Miocene), Turkey, have indicated the presence of Pliohyracidae at the site, but the material was too scanty for confident identification. The single upper molar, an upper molar ectoloph fragment and an ascending ramal fragment were too uninformative for determining the taxonomic identity of the fossils, although several names have been proposed in the literature. Additional fossils collected from Paşalar include upper and lower premolars, which help to tie down the affinities of this hyracoid. They are attributed to the genus Prohyrax, but were not named specifically, even though they are …

When Did The Drainage System Of The Kızılırmak River Form In Cappadocia (Anatolia,Turkey)? A Revised Geological And Geomorphological Stratigraphy, Uğur Doğan, Çeti̇n Şenkul
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Kızılırmak is the longest river in Turkey, extending from the western part of eastern Anatolia to the Black Sea, and crossing the orogenic Central Anatolian Plateau (CAP) and Black Sea Mountains. This study focuses on the formation period of the drainage system of the Kızılırmak River in the Cappadocia region, which is situated in the middle of the CAP. The Upper Pliocene-Quaternary geological and geomorphological stratigraphy of the Cappadocia region was revised with new findings and those of previous studies. In this study, the oldest terrace (Sünnetli Tepe Terrace, T0) of the Kızılırmak River was identified 214 m above …
A State Divided: The Reality Of Education In Maine, Gabrielle Raymond
A State Divided: The Reality Of Education In Maine, Gabrielle Raymond
Honors Program Theses
In Maine there is a lack of a comprehensive policy that allows and facilitates an equal education for all students no matter where they go to school. In order to research what is driving this inequality a specific policy was selected to use as the case study. The policy selected was proficiency-based learning. This policy was enacted in 2012 which makes it the most recent comprehensive education policy passed in Maine. In addition, this policy mandated similar concepts as past policy, so it was able to illustrate the trends in Maine’s education policy. In order to understand what effects education …

Latinx – African American Relations: Understanding The Perceptions Of Faculty, Administrators And Students In Two College Campuses, Nadarajan Sethuraju, Luis A. Posas
Sociology Department Publications
This study examines the relationship between Latinxs and African Americans in two mid-size colleges located in the southwestern region of the United States. An empirical study was conducted including students, faculty, and administrators using a survey as the main methodological technique. Guided by the group position model advocated by Herber Blumer, this study found evidence for the prevalence of intra-group associations and group competition for access to resources. In this regard, the study documents the existing perception that African Americans have better access to resources in the two college campuses which supports the zero-sum hypothesis favoring members of this group. …
Israelite And Judean Society And Economy, Roger Nam
Israelite And Judean Society And Economy, Roger Nam
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This article examines the economic worlds that correspond to the timeline of the historical books of the Hebrew Bible from the conquest to the return from exile. During this period, Israel and Judah transformed from small subsistence-based tribal economies to more centralized organization, at least partially due to external military threats. Both the northern kingdom and eventually the southern kingdom fell to the Assyrian and Babylonian empires respectively, and the forced migrations instigated socially dis-embedded economies in the exile and repatriation. Even though these ancient economic modalities are largely assumed and unstated, critical analysis of the historical books requires a …

Musings On The Birth Of The Savior Jesus Christ, Kristine Wardle Frederickson
Musings On The Birth Of The Savior Jesus Christ, Kristine Wardle Frederickson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In this essay, Kristine Wardle Frederickson muses about “the babe born in Bethlehem,” and who he was — and is — in consideration of those who nurtured, loved, and welcomed the infant Jehovah to Earth. Certain women played critical roles in preparing him for his infinite and eternal Atonement, and that preparation began long before Jesus came to Earth. Four women stand out as devoted mentors, disciples, and witnesses of Jesus Christ’s mission, and of his sublime perfection even on that first Christmas day: Heavenly Mother, Mary, Elisabeth, and Anna. At Christmastime, their witnesses are worthy of deep contemplation as …

Alma Chapter I (1–3) [Book Header] When Mormon introduces a new book, he provides a synoptic header: The account of Alma, who was the son of Alma, the first and chief judge over the people of Nephi, and also the high priest over the Church. An account of the reign of the judges, and the wars and contentions among the people. And also an account of a war between the Nephites and the Lamanites, according to the record of Alma, the first and chief judge.
