Human Wildlife Conflict Monitoring: Understanding Human Wildlife Conflict Through Big Data, Benjamin Larsen, Ana Costa, Mcallister Hall, Lantz Mcginnis-Brown, Vanessa Fry

Idaho Policy Institute Reports

This research examines global methodologies for understanding community attitudes and tolerance regarding Human Wildlife Conflict. Both traditional and future-focused approaches are examined for use in the World Wildlife Fund’s 13 tiger landscapes. Traditional methodologies are resource intensive and limit the ability for longitudinal studies and timely indication of attitudinal shifts. This research uses the Safe System Approach to explore innovative ways of understanding community attitudes toward human tiger conflict. We argue that improved monitoring of conflict areas will improve conflict management in all areas. This research uses policy analysis tools to evaluate the effectiveness of various big data techniques, including …

The Altar Of National Prosperity: Extractivism And Sacrifice Zones In Argentine Patagonia, Jonathan Gomez-Pereira Jan 2020

The Altar Of National Prosperity: Extractivism And Sacrifice Zones In Argentine Patagonia, Jonathan Gomez-Pereira

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

The advances in extractive technologies in the 21st century has led to the creation of a new powerful global actor, the Multinational. These multinationals have no allegiance to a state, as earlier forms of capitalism did, rather they are ventures in the industries of agribusiness and mining that operate in countries throughout Latin America. These global actors are able to effectively dominate economies through the reprimarization of the countries that host them. Countries like Argentina have welcomed multinationals like Monsanto and Patagonia Gold into their territories, which has proven to be a detriment to the communities and environments in which …

Traces Of Mediterranean Origin Holocene Transgression In The Drainage Basin Of Riva-Çayağzı Creek Of The Black Sea (Northeastern İstanbul-Turkey), Bülent Doğan, Ahmet Karakaş, Ati̇ke Nazi̇k, İbrahi̇m Engi̇n Meri̇ç

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Riva-Çayağzı Creek (İstanbul, Black Sea) pours into the Black Sea from the coasts of Turkey. In the drainage basin of this creek, both deep and shallow drillings were undertaken, and the minimum thickness of Holocene stratigraphy was determined as 30 m. The Holocene young deposits are mainly composed of fine-grained sediments and clay, which has the most prominent thickness. The energy of water during the sedimentation process was low and stagnant in the Riva-Çayağzı Creek basin. When the marine mollusc fossils obtained from the shallow boring cores are evaluated, it can be deduced that the sea level in the …

A Procedure For Taxon Assessment Based On Morphological Variation In European Water Frogs (Pelophylax Esculentus Complex), Katarina Breka, Imre Krizmanic, Tanja Vukov, Srdjan Stamenkovic

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Methods for morphological identification of water frogs from the Pelophylax esculentus complex have changed over the decades. Still, without resort to genetic analyses, water frogs remain among the most difficult European amphibians to distinguish due to their hybrid nature. The aim of this study was to identify a reliable set of quantitative and qualitative morphological characters that objectively resolve species? identification in the Pelophylax esculentus complex and provide a rapid and robust procedure for taxon identification. Our results showed a substantial difference in morphological characteristics among taxa. The shape and size of the metatarsal tubercle along with the coloration of …

America’S Marine Highway Stakeholders: A System-Scale Analysis Of Influence In Decision Making, Amit J. Mokashi, Austin Becker, James J. Corbett Jan 2020

America’S Marine Highway Stakeholders: A System-Scale Analysis Of Influence In Decision Making, Amit J. Mokashi, Austin Becker, James J. Corbett

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

This work surveys stakeholders of America’s Marine Highway to identify their perceived influence on each other’s resource allocation decision making. The value/criticality of the resource held by the stakeholder group can be indirectly measured by the influence exerted by the group on its peers and its external stakeholders. The stakeholder map visualizes how the various stakeholder groups influence each other. Survey of the US Marine Highway stakeholders reveals peers as the most dominant influence among shippers, environmental advocates, and regulators. Results suggest that only suppliers and transportation providers exhibit distinct dominance of customer-supplier influence over that of their peers. This …

A Posthumanist Pragmatism: Rereading Tomboys, Aaron Martin, Spurthi Gubbala, Marissa J. Huth, Sarah M. Johnson, Amanda Romaya

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Gender has often dictated the roles and responsibilities that individuals are expected to fulfill. Societies in general still adhere to a strict gender binary system, and have largely been either intolerant of or, at minimum, uncomfortable with those who break from such a system. The tomboy figure has been the recipient of societal judgement for what has been interpreted to be a subversion of and deviance from traditional gender norms, and this has played out in a variety of ways. For instance, literary depictions of the tomboy—as the manifestations of the dominant cultural attitude—have captured both the aversion to as …

Property Recommendation System With Geospatial Data Analytics Andnatural Language Processing For Urban Land Use, Sean K. Riehl Jan 2020

Property Recommendation System With Geospatial Data Analytics Andnatural Language Processing For Urban Land Use, Sean K. Riehl

ETD Archive

Recently Cuyahoga County has been tremendously improved as properties are being constructed, renovated, or altered for new land use transactions on a nearly daily basis. Most existing property recommendation systems for the area simply rely on surface-level information and user history data to produce recommendations while failing to prioritize factors according to their importance and utilizing the location based complex information efficiently. This is leading them to become stagnant and simplistic in their approach and their accuracy is worsening as there are too many factors to be considered and location based complex yet useful information such as land use aspects …

Taking A Knee To “Whiteness” In Urban Teacher Education: An Abolitionist Stance, Anne Auburn Sheaffer Jan 2020

Taking A Knee To “Whiteness” In Urban Teacher Education: An Abolitionist Stance, Anne Auburn Sheaffer

ETD Archive

In a qualitative narrative study of 11 urban teacher education faculty who teach courses that prepare teacher candidates for field immersions in metro-urban schools, I problematized “whiteness” by asking participants what it meant to them in the contexts of their work in contact zones were teacher candidates and K-12 students meet. The research was shaped as an abolitionist justice project (Tuck & Yang, 2018, p. 8) and considered how “whiteness” might be deconstructed and decentered in urban teacher education. Participants described whiteness as both fixed phenotype and historical and social construct which causes harm and which requires intervention. In scenarios …

Computational Modeling Of The Human Microbiome, Shomeek Chowdhury, Stephen S. Fong

Chemical and Life Science Engineering Publications

The impact of microorganisms on human health has long been acknowledged and studied, but recent advances in research methodologies have enabled a new systems-level perspective on the collections of microorganisms associated with humans, the human microbiome. Large-scale collaborative efforts such as the NIH Human Microbiome Project have sought to kick-start research on the human microbiome by providing foundational information on microbial composition based upon specific sites across the human body. Here, we focus on the four main anatomical sites of the human microbiome: gut, oral, skin, and vaginal, and provide information on site-specific background, experimental data, and computational modeling. Each …

Irish Agricultural Land Sales And Rental Prices, Frank Harrington Jan 2020

Irish Agricultural Land Sales And Rental Prices, Frank Harrington

Articles

There have been many commentaries on the Irish agricultural land market, but regrettably for those of us interested in it there have been limited reliable data to test our theories. Given the importance of agriculture to the Irish economy and society, it is surprising how little reliable primary data exists about the Irish agricultural land market. To help address this lack of data the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) and Teagasc are publishing a 50-year dataset of agricultural land sales and rentals to complement the SCSI member survey data.

Cultural Geography: Local News Fosters Audience Attachment To Spaces And Places In The Digital Era, Christina C. Smith Jan 2020

Cultural Geography: Local News Fosters Audience Attachment To Spaces And Places In The Digital Era, Christina C. Smith

Faculty and Staff Works

Despite the endless struggles, including circulation and revenue declines and increasing digital competition, that larger daily print newspapers have been battling for years, geographicallybounded, small-town weekly print newspapers across the United States continuously remain vital to their communities in the digital age because they remain faithful to their fundamental function as providers of reliable and relevant news to their audiences. This essay explores why these media remain relevant to their audiences in a global society. Ultimately, the researcher suggests geographically-bounded U.S. weekly print newspapers aren’t facing the same struggles as their larger brethren, the daily newspapers, and audiences across the …

U.S. Fdi And Shareholder Rights Protection In Developed And Developing Economies, Vishaal Baulkaran, Nathaniel C. Lupton Jan 2020

U.S. Fdi And Shareholder Rights Protection In Developed And Developing Economies, Vishaal Baulkaran, Nathaniel C. Lupton

Faculty Publications

We examine the impact of shareholder rights protection on U.S multinational firms’ Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). We hypothesize that the expropriation of wealth is less likely to occur in countries with strong shareholder rights and hence, these countries will attract more FDI relative to countries with weaker shareholder rights protection. We also hypothesize that this relationship will be more important for developing countries compared to developed countries. Based on an analysis of US FDI data over the period 1997-2016, we find support for our predictions. These findings emphasize the importance of institutional development for economic development, via the attraction of …

Southern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger Niger) Foraging Behavior And Population Dynamics, John Huang Jan 2020

Southern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger Niger) Foraging Behavior And Population Dynamics, John Huang

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The change in the interaction between southern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger niger) and eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) provided an opportunity to examine sublethal effects of predation as it relates to a species’ risk perception and habitat structure at two scales. The interactions allowed us to examine the evolutionary responses of the southern fox squirrel and eastern gray squirrel to predation risk reflective of their historically associated landscapes and habitat structures. Second, the succession of savanna woodlands into closed-canopy mixed forest provided an opportunity to assess the flexible behaviors of both species in response to changes …
