Deepmicrobes: Taxonomic Classification For Metagenomics With Deep Learning, Paul W. Bible, Qiaoxing Liang, Yu Liu, Bin Zou, Lai Wei
Deepmicrobes: Taxonomic Classification For Metagenomics With Deep Learning, Paul W. Bible, Qiaoxing Liang, Yu Liu, Bin Zou, Lai Wei
Computer Science Faculty publications
Large-scale metagenomic assemblies have uncovered thousands of new species greatly expanding the known diversity of microbiomes in specific habitats. To investigate the roles of these uncultured species in human health or the environment, researchers need to incorporate their genome assemblies into a reference database for taxonomic classification. However, this procedure is hindered by the lack of a well-curated taxonomic tree for newly discovered species, which is required by current metagenomics tools. Here we report DeepMicrobes, a deep learning-based computational framework for taxonomic classification that allows researchers to bypass this limitation. We show the advantage of DeepMicrobes over state-of-the-art tools in …
Attitude Towards One-To-One Technology Among Student Academic Achievement In Ninth Grade Stem Classes, Brenda Patterson Ishmael
Attitude Towards One-To-One Technology Among Student Academic Achievement In Ninth Grade Stem Classes, Brenda Patterson Ishmael
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The use of technology is an essential element in the world in which we live. This study is important because schools around the world spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on one-to-one technology integration in the classroom. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if a predictive relationship exists between the attitudinal level towards one-to-one technology and student academic achievement of ninth-grade students. A bivariate regression analysis was used to determine if there was a predictive relationship between student academic achievement as measure by EOC scores Algebra 1 and Biology 1 and the attitudinal test scores measured …

INTRODUCTION: Accurate costing is key for programme planning and policy implementation. Since 2011, there have been major changes in eligibility criteria and treatment regimens with price reductions in ART drugs, programmatic changes resulting in clinical task-shifting and decentralization of ART delivery to peripheral health centres making existing evidence on ART care costs in Zambia out-of-date. As decision makers consider further changes in ART service delivery, it is important to understand the current drivers of costs for ART care. This study provides updates on costs of ART services for HIV-positive patients in Zambia.
METHODS: We evaluated costs, assessed from the health …
Americans Collecting Natural History, Herbert A. Pollard Iv
Americans Collecting Natural History, Herbert A. Pollard Iv
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the first decades of the nineteenth century, Americans established institutions of science that called upon the public to donate materials and further the study of natural history. This thesis examines how resident scholars recruited sailors, merchants, and amateur naturalists to collect objects and accounts of natural history in South America. In turn, we find that the kinds of education and professional training that young doctors received in antebellum Philadelphia gave naval surgeons like William S. W. Ruschenberger the skills and temperament to collect objects that were otherwise considered sacred or taboo. Finally, as medical education in urban Philadelphia divided …
Through The Scholastic Looking Glass: The Pedagogical Potential Of Textual Deformation For Poetic Studies, Taylor Dietrich
Through The Scholastic Looking Glass: The Pedagogical Potential Of Textual Deformation For Poetic Studies, Taylor Dietrich
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the pedagogical usefulness of the antithetical reading model of textual deformation for the study of poetic works. No formal pedagogical plan exists for the education of students in poetic studies through textual deformance. This thesis does not go as far as structuring one in its entirety. Rather, it surveys the digital humanities landscape, showing a collective affinity within a number of textual studies approaches that advocate for textual deformance as useful for interrogating texts, and aligns the overlapping symmetries within those working methodologies with pedagogical imperatives like those embedded in Ryan Cordell’s Kaleidoscopic Pedagogy Laboratory—the intent being …
The Language Of Exploitation: A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of How Employers Use Bilingualism In New York City Job Ads, Guadalupe R. Hernandez
The Language Of Exploitation: A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of How Employers Use Bilingualism In New York City Job Ads, Guadalupe R. Hernandez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Abstract
In this globalizing world, bilingualism is increasingly being treated as a commodity, another skill to put on a resume that will increase one’s chances of landing a lucrative job. However, in the case of Spanish, which is wrapped up in prevailing anti-immigrant and anti-Latinx sentiments and thus increasingly devalued, this is hardly the case: People who speak Spanish rarely receive additional compensation for possessing such language skills. Prior research has been conducted on resumes and interviews as sites of discrimination in the job market, but this study turns to the beginning of process, job advertisements. Specifically, it draws on …
Overcoming The Conflict Of Jurisdiction In Cybercrime, Abdelmonem Mohamed Magdy Khalifa
Overcoming The Conflict Of Jurisdiction In Cybercrime, Abdelmonem Mohamed Magdy Khalifa
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the different approaches to managing the conflict of criminal jurisdiction over cybercrime with the aim of comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. It argues that the most effective solution to this dilemma is to determine certain factors to be considered and evaluated by a body established for such a purpose or by the concerned states themselves in order to decide which country will take the exclusive competence over the cybercrime in accordance with the facts of each individual case and taking into account the characteristics of cybercrime. Establishment of these factors should reflect the interests …
Mustaqillat: Navigating Women's Mobilities In Post-2011 Egypt, Ghadeer Ahmed Eldamaty
Mustaqillat: Navigating Women's Mobilities In Post-2011 Egypt, Ghadeer Ahmed Eldamaty
Theses and Dissertations
Following the Egyptian revolution of January, the 25th, 2011, the term women's independence, istiqlal ijtma'ay, has been widely used by young Egyptian women. A mustaqilla (independent woman) identifies herself as a woman who is socio-economically independent from her family, lives on her own, and works to support herself. This thesis is concerned with the emergence of independent women, mustaqillat, as a social phenomenon, and questions how the phenomenon of istiqlal is constructed. What are its socio-economic dimensions, and associated meanings? Based on an ethnographic fieldwork with a group of Egyptian women who identify themselves as mustaqillat, this thesis focuses on …
Slave Hounds And Abolition In The Americas, Tyler D. Parry, Charlton W. Yingling
Slave Hounds And Abolition In The Americas, Tyler D. Parry, Charlton W. Yingling
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The lash and shackles remain two primary symbols of material degradation fixed in the historical memory of slavery in the Americas. Yet as recounted by states, abolitionists, travellers, and most importantly slaves themselves, perhaps the most terrifying and effective tool for disciplining black bodies and dominating their space was the dog. This article draws upon archival research and the published materials of former slaves, novelists, slave owners, abolitionists, Atlantic travelers, and police reports to link the systems of slave hunting in Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, and the US South throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Slave hounds were skillfully honed biopower …
Review Of Women In Texas History, By Angela Boswell, Linda English
Review Of Women In Texas History, By Angela Boswell, Linda English
History Faculty Publications
Angela Boswell’s Women in Texas History is a narrative account of Texas history told through the experiences of women, spanning from the prehistoric period to Senator Wendy Davis’s marathon filibuster for reproductive rights on the floor of the Texas legislature in 2013. Throughout the book, Boswell’s gendered focus intersects with racial, ethnic, and class categories of analysis, providing an ambitious and highly inclusive examination of the state’s history. [End Page 130] On this approach, Boswell notes that “this book pays special attention to the differences in the lived experiences of Native Americans, Tejanas, African Americans, Anglos, Germans, and Asians. Outlandish People: Gypsies, Race, And Fantasies Of National Identity In Early Modern England, Sydnee Wagner
Outlandish People: Gypsies, Race, And Fantasies Of National Identity In Early Modern England, Sydnee Wagner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since the arrival of Romani people in England in the 16th century, the figure of the Gypsy has been a staple of English literature and culture. My dissertation, Outlandish People: Gypsies, Race, and Fantasies of National Identity in Early Modern England, argues that representations of Gypsies, from Shakespeare’s Othello and Antony and Cleopatra to Ben Jonson’s The Gypsies Metamorphosed, served as a foil for English writers to create a distinctly white early modern English subject. By investigating the racialization of the Gypsy, this project considers technologies of race that lie within the parameters of England itself. Though the English …
Asians Applying For Postsecondary Success: Students, Schools, And Socioeconomic Status, Avery M.D. Davis
Asians Applying For Postsecondary Success: Students, Schools, And Socioeconomic Status, Avery M.D. Davis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Higher education recruitment rates are rapidly declining as schools are stymied by dynamic demographic shifts and a competitive ecosystem. Despite the constant realities of this challenge for tertiary institutions, the complexities of the interplay for demographics, student motivation, parental influences, and school environments during the postsecondary education application process is often overlooked. This thesis analyses how these four domains impact Asian American students within the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS) in terms of the number of postsecondary schools to which they apply? This study examines a sample (N = 662) of the ELS by employing multivariate regression analysis on the number …

Shock, Stimulus, And Upheaval: The Great Recession, The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act, And Mayoral Coalitions In Brooklyn, Ny 2009–2013, Charles Linsmeier
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Abstract: In 2009, the United States, and much of the world, experienced the largest economic decline since the Great Depression of the early 20th Century. New York City, the financial capital of the United States, was not immune. In early 2009, the federal government passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) shepherding a substantial infusion of federal funds to states and municipalities to stimulate local economies and stem the tide of potential job losses. At the same time, New York City was experiencing an historic mayoral election - the potential third term of Mayor Michael Bloomberg - …
The Argentines Of Paris: Theatrical Networks And Assemblages, Stefano Boselli
The Argentines Of Paris: Theatrical Networks And Assemblages, Stefano Boselli
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This work investigates key theatre productions written or directed by Argentines who left Buenos Aires, for personal, artistic, and/or political reasons, and established themselves in Paris. Case studies refer to the lives, visual art, theatre companies, official appointments, and global networks that contributed to their creations between the 1960s and 1990s. Although others are mentioned briefly, the main focus remains on a cluster of theatre practitioners who more frequently connected with each other around playwright, performer, and graphic artist Copi (nom de plume of Raúl Damonte Botana). These included director Jorge Lavelli; director and performer Jérôme Savary; director and visual …
The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Middle-Late Miocene Apes: Implications For Early Human Evolution, Kelsey D. Pugh
The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Middle-Late Miocene Apes: Implications For Early Human Evolution, Kelsey D. Pugh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The living great apes, humans, and their fossil relatives (family Hominidae) are among the most intensively studied mammalian groups, yet many aspects of their shared evolutionary history are not well understood. Phylogenetic relationships of fossil great apes are poorly resolved and the positions of many fossil taxa relative to crown ape clades are debated. Moreover, the relationships of Sahelanthropus, Orrorin, and Ardipithecus to hominins are disputed, with some authors suggesting that alternative positions within Hominidae are more likely. Analyzing the position of these taxa within the broader context of the Miocene ape fossil record is thus necessary to …

A Heavy Rain Has Fallen Upon My People: Sindhi Sufi Poetry Performance, Emotion, And Islamic Knowledge In Kachchh, Gujarat, Brian E. Bond
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a study of the use and contestation of Sindhi-language Sufi poetry performance as a means of Islamic knowledge transmission and ethical self-formation in rural Muslim communities in Kachchh, a border district in the western Indian state of Gujarat adjacent to Sindh, Pakistan. Drawing on eighteen months of ethnographic research with Muslim performers and enthusiasts of Sindhi poetry between 2014-2018, I first examine an ecology of performative and interpretive practices revolving around the musico-poetic repertoire of the poet-saint Shāh ʿAbdul Lat̤īf Bhiṭā’ī (1689-1752 CE). I argue that the pedagogical efficacy of Sufi poetry performance is undergirded by its …
Mathematical Possibilities In Modernism: Can Literature Be A System?, Arka Chattopadhyay
Mathematical Possibilities In Modernism: Can Literature Be A System?, Arka Chattopadhyay
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
From Aristotle’s Poetics, literature and logic have been companions in approaching the hypothetical realm of the ‘what if.’ In this paper, I focus on the combinatorial possibilities of logic to see how mathematics becomes an important tool for the Modernist text’s aesthetic appeal to anti-representational and self-enclosed systemic autonomy. Is mathematical discourse autonomous vis-à-vis external reality? Can literary Modernism achieve textual autonomy that goes against realistic verisimilitude by following mathematical discourse? Though literary texts often negotiate formal systems with sophisticated governing logics, can literature itself become a logico-mathematical system? I trace the dialectic of form and system in the …
Why Our Hand Is Not The Whole Deck: Embrace, Acceptance, Or Use Of Limitations, Robert S.D. Thomas
Why Our Hand Is Not The Whole Deck: Embrace, Acceptance, Or Use Of Limitations, Robert S.D. Thomas
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
I investigate with examples limitations that mathematicians accept in research: aesthetic, scientific, and practical, in particular, on what bases such choices are made. Discussion is partly in terms of the ideal agents that Philip Kitcher and Brian Rotman used to analyse mathematical writing.

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
In teaching algebra, extra-mathematical word problems can bridge the gap between questions about abstract numbers and questions about everyday life. Thus, more than other aspects of elementary algebra, we would expect word problems to have changed in the recent past. This paper documents the findings of a collective research project that examined the content of such word problems over the past century. Alongside amusing and provocative examples, this paper shows how students can participate in exploratory research with primary sources from the history of mathematics.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Giving credit to where it is due is common across cultures. In research, researchers widely express their gratitude to those who would have contributed to their studies in one way or the other under the acknowledgements section. In most cases, the selection of who to acknowledge remains the prerogative of the author. The purpose of this study was to review acknowledgements in Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) with a special focus on the acknowledgement accorded to the library and librarians at the North-West University in South Africa. This was done in order to determine the perceived value of librarians as …

Mainstreaming Creativity: Creative Writing Enters General Education’S Advanced Writing Requirement, John Paul Tassoni
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This essay describes twenty-first century general education reforms that create opportunities for creative writing studies proponents to negotiate a central role for the field in the core curriculum. This essay draws on existent research in creative writing pedagogy to make a case for “Introduction to Creative Writing” as part of the advanced writing requirements appearing now in liberal education plans. The essay also draws from scholarship and anecdotes describing new directions in general education at the author’s own school as well as colleges and universities nationwide to identify trends that can curtail or facilitate CW’s status as mainstream curricular business.
Forward To Enhancing Informal Transportation Stations In Crowded Cities, Mary Felix, Mostafa Elhefnawi
Forward To Enhancing Informal Transportation Stations In Crowded Cities, Mary Felix, Mostafa Elhefnawi
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
By observing the planning of developing countries, it is clear that there are several factors that affect the movements and behaviors of transportation. One of these behaviors is the appearance of informal transportation modes, which move along certain paths to fulfil citizens’ needs. The phenomenon of informal transportation modes appears due to a lack of formal transportation modes existing, or a weakness in planning that does not consider the users’ needs or community behavior. This paper focuses on the location of informal transportation stops, which affect transportation movements and traffic jams, by observing and documenting the location and facilities of …
The Impact Of Changes In Beirut Urban Patterns On The Microclimate: A Review Of Urban Policy And Building Regulations, Hiba Mohsen, Rokia Raslan, Ibtihal Y. El-Bastawissi
The Impact Of Changes In Beirut Urban Patterns On The Microclimate: A Review Of Urban Policy And Building Regulations, Hiba Mohsen, Rokia Raslan, Ibtihal Y. El-Bastawissi
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Previous studies conducted on Beirut have historically overlooked research in the field of urban microclimate. A better understanding of how Beirut urban development, including zoning and building regulations, has affected the current urban thermal climate is crucial in order to analyse how different factors have led to the structure of the city, including the quality of urban space and the degradation of its natural environment. Within the context of limited government capability to set out strategies for sustainable urban development, this paper examines the historical evolution of the Lebanese building regulations specifically in Beirut and investigates the impact of changes …

International trade depends on networking, interaction and in-person meetings which stimulate cross-border travels. The countries are seeking policies to encourage inbound mobility to support bilateral trade, tourism, and foreign direct investments. Some nations have been implementing liberal visa regimes as an important part of facilitating policies in view of security concerns. Turkey has been among the nations introducing liberal visa policies to support trade in the last decade and recorded significant increases in the volumes of exports. In this paper, we employed machine learning methodologies, Support vector machines (SVM) and Neural networks (NN), to investigate the facilitating impact of liberal …

Hm 26: The Hattendorf Prize Lectures, Volume 1: 2011–2019, Evan Wilson
Historical Monographs
Let this volume serve three purposes. First, it is an example of naval history done well. All the essays were written by distinguished scholars, and they demonstrate the best of the field. They look beyond operations, integrating sea power into larger frameworks; they revel in complexity, rejecting simple explanations; and most of all, they ask the right questions. The lectures also demonstrate the enduring relevance of sea power theory. Mahan is not enough, but—thanks in part to the prize laureates—no one is suggesting that he is. Understanding the parameters of the historical debates, as well as their limitations, is essential …

Irregular Migrations In Southeast Asia: Challenges For Protection And Migration, Salawati Mat Basir
Indonesian Journal of International Law
The region of Southeast Asia is extremely diverse in terms of culture, language, ethnicity, economic development, forms of government and degrees of political freedom. Migration of all types has played and continues to play a crucial role in the political economy of the region and is central to the contemporary economies of all of the states within it. In terms of protection and migration policy analyses, Southeast Asia is often folded into the larger ‘regions’ of Asia, the Asia-Pacific, or a hybrid sub-region consisting of East and Southeast Asia, depending on the type of migration, and the policy issues under …
