Acedia In The Local Church: Cultivating The Virtue Of Charity As A Remedy For The Vice Of Acedia, Jason Sedore Feb 2020

Acedia In The Local Church: Cultivating The Virtue Of Charity As A Remedy For The Vice Of Acedia, Jason Sedore

Doctor of Ministry

The vice of acedia is one of the greatest challenges the church is currently facing. Acedia lies at the root of indifference, apathy, idleness, and a lack of engagement in the life of a community of faith. Paradoxically, acedia also manifests as dutiful, distracted service that seeks to maintain status quo or personal preferences. Adding to the complexity further, acedia will also produce an overwhelming desire to leave one’s faith community for any other place that promises to meet one’s needs or provide a more hospitable environment for one’s growth.

The first step that must be undertaken against this forgotten …

Incorporating Wildlife Connectivity Into Forest Plan Revision Under The United States Forest Service's 2012 Planning Rule, Matthew A. Williamson, Tyler G. Creech, Gunnar Carnwath, Beverly Dixon, Virginia Kelly Feb 2020

Incorporating Wildlife Connectivity Into Forest Plan Revision Under The United States Forest Service's 2012 Planning Rule, Matthew A. Williamson, Tyler G. Creech, Gunnar Carnwath, Beverly Dixon, Virginia Kelly

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

The United States Forest Service promulgated new planning regulations under the National Forest Management Act in 2012 (i.e., the Planning Rule). These new regulations include the first requirements in U.S. public land management history for National Forests to evaluate, protect, and/or restore ecological connectivity as they revise their land management plans. Data and resource limitations make single-species, functional connectivity analyses for the myriad species that occur within the 78 million ha the Forest Service manages implausible. We describe an approach that relies on freely available data and generic species, virtual species whose profile consists of ecological requirements designed to reflect …

Integrated Spatial Analysis For Human-Wildlife Coexistence In The American West, Matthew A. Williamson, Abigail Sage Feb 2020

Integrated Spatial Analysis For Human-Wildlife Coexistence In The American West, Matthew A. Williamson, Abigail Sage

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

The future of conservation and human–wildlife relationships in the American West is at a defining moment. The region consists of a mosaic of land-cover types, with large amounts of public land under varying degrees of protection, use, and ownership. This public land provides the foundation for high levels of connectivity and habitat for healthy populations of wildlife, including those with large resource requirements such as large and wide-ranging mammals (Barnes et al 2016). However, space for wildlife is under threat in the West. Energy development projects, urban and ex-urban sprawl, increasing road traffic and density, and amenity-driven human migration are …

Filling The Organ Donor Pool By Giving Priority, Matthew D. Meng, Roberta N. Clarke Feb 2020

Filling The Organ Donor Pool By Giving Priority, Matthew D. Meng, Roberta N. Clarke

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Context: Many of the alternatives for procuring donor organs are considered either ineffective, unethical, or illegal. One possibility that may not face such challenges is a priority system whereby individuals who register as an organ donor are given priority to receive an organ over those who have not registered. However, providing extrinsic rewards can sometimes paradoxically reduce the target behavior, especially for those who are more altruistically motivated.

Methods: Two behavioral experiments were employed and data were analyzed using regressions as well as examining open-ended responses.

Findings: The results suggest that giving priority to receive an organ to those who …

The cryosphere - all forms of frozen water on Earth- plays a fundamental role in its climate system. Seasonal snow, mountain glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice reflect much of the incoming shortwave radiation at high latitudes and in mountainous terrain back to space, helping to regulate the surface temperature of the planet. Accelerating concentrations of greenhouse gases (Solomon et al. 2009) are responsible for late twentieth and early twenty-first century tropospheric warming; this warming in turn drives large-scale changes in the cryosphere, with global implications that include changes in hemispheric circulation (Francis and Vavrus 2012), sea level rise (Gardner …

Understanding Rural Attitudes Toward The Environment And Conservation In America, Robert Bonnie, Emily Pechar Diamond, Elizabeth Rowe Feb 2020

Understanding Rural Attitudes Toward The Environment And Conservation In America, Robert Bonnie, Emily Pechar Diamond, Elizabeth Rowe

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Rural Americans matter—a lot—to the fate of U.S. environmental policy. Not only do farmers, ranchers, and forest owners manage huge portions of American lands and watersheds, but rural voters also have an outsized impact on national policy. While rural Americans express support for natural resource conservation, they and their elected officials often voice less support for existing federal environmental policies and laws. Congressional action on a variety of environmental issues has been impeded by opposition from rural stakeholders.

Why do rural voters and their representatives often oppose environmental regulations? What accounts for this apparent rural/urban divide on attitudes toward environmental …

Establishing An Information System For Documenting Valuable Buildings By Using Gis In Egypt, Mona Mahrous Abdel Wahed

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

Valuable heritage buildings are the history of nations, and history forms the identities of these nations. Many of these buildings are exposed to deterioration, destruction and distortion. Therefore, it is essential to protect and maintain these buildings to protect history. Effective documentation of valuable buildings is necessary to guide and assist stakeholders in making decisions regarding valuable buildings. Documentation requires robust and scientific methods. Therefore, it is important to utilize new technology in general and geographic information system GIS in particular in documenting valuable buildings. GIS has the potential to contribute and deal with valuable buildings at various stages and …

Conundrum Or Paradox: Deconstructing The Spurious Case Of Water Scarcity In The Himalayan Region Through An Institutional Economics Narrative, Rinan Shah, Shrinivas Badiger Feb 2020

Conundrum Or Paradox: Deconstructing The Spurious Case Of Water Scarcity In The Himalayan Region Through An Institutional Economics Narrative, Rinan Shah, Shrinivas Badiger

Open Access archive

Water scarcity in mountain regions such as the Himalaya has been studied with a pre-existing notion of scarcity justified by decades of communities’ suffering from physical water shortages combined by difficulties of access. The Eastern Himalayan Region (EHR) of India receives significantly high amounts of annual precipitation. Studies have nonetheless shown that this region faces a strange dissonance: an acute water scarcity in a supposedly ‘water-rich’ region. The main objective of this paper is to decipher various drivers of water scarcity by locating the contemporary history of water institutions within the development trajectory of the Darjeeling region, particularly Darjeeling Municipal …

Plants and their corresponding botanical preparations have been used for centuries due to their remarkable potential in both the treatment and prevention of oxidative stress-related disorders. Aging and aging-related diseases, like cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders, which have increased exponentially, are intrinsically related with redox imbalance and oxidative stress. Hundreds of biologically active constituents are present in each whole plant matrix, providing promissory bioactive effects for human beings. Indeed, the worldwide population has devoted increased attention and preference for the use of medicinal plants for healthy aging and longevity promotion. In fact, plant-derived bioactives present a broad spectrum …

Long-Term Variations Of Air Quality Influenced By Surface Ozone In A Coastal Site In India: Association With Synoptic Meteorological Conditions With Model Simulations, C. T. Resmi, T. Nishanth, M. K. Satheesh Kumar, M. Balachandramohan

Open Access archive

Atmospheric ozone (O3) in the surface level plays a central role in determining air quality and atmospheric oxidizing capacity. In this paper, we review our comprehensive results of simultaneous measurements of surface ozone (O3) and its precursor gas (NOx) and weather parameters that were carried out continuously for a span of six years (January 2013-December 2018) at a typical rural coastal site, Kannur (11.9° N, 75.4° E) in South India. Surface O3 concentration reached its maximum during daytime hours and minimum during the night time. The influence of solar radiation and water content on variations of O3 are discussed. A …

The Rise And Fall Of A Parallel-Walled Structure: Assessing The Site Sequence At Pachamta, Teresa Raczek, Prabodh Shirvalkar, Esha Prasad, Lalit Pandey Feb 2020

The Rise And Fall Of A Parallel-Walled Structure: Assessing The Site Sequence At Pachamta, Teresa Raczek, Prabodh Shirvalkar, Esha Prasad, Lalit Pandey

Faculty Articles

In this article, we investigate the chronology of a large parallel-walled mudbrick structure at the site of Pachamta in Rajasthan, India. Pachamta is larger than the contemporaneous Harappan site of Kalibangan and part of a society collectively known as the Ahar Culture. Recent excavations at Pachamta provided an opportunity to elaborate on the available dates for this society and to investigate the chronology of an enigmatic parallel-walled structure. The chronology and function of such prominent structures remains murky, although scholars have suggested that these buildings served as public storage because they resemble the granary at Harappa. Through excavation, our team …

Breaking The Silence: Why International Organizations Should Acknowledge Customary International Law Obligations To Provide Effective Remedies, Kristina Daugirdas, Sachi Schuricht Feb 2020

Breaking The Silence: Why International Organizations Should Acknowledge Customary International Law Obligations To Provide Effective Remedies, Kristina Daugirdas, Sachi Schuricht

Law & Economics Working Papers

To date, international organizations have remained largely silent about their obligations under customary international law. This chapter urges international organizations to change course, and to expressly acknowledge customary international law obligations to provide effective remedies. Notably, international organizations’ obligations to afford effective remedies need not precisely mirror States’ obligations to do so. Instead, international organizations may be governed by particular customary international law rules. By publicly acknowledging obligations to afford effective remedies, international organizations can influence the development of such particular rules. In addition, by acknowledging obligations to afford effective remedies — and by actually providing effective remedies — international …

Saving The Vicuña: The Political, Biophysical, And Cultural History Of Wild Animal Conservation In Peru, 1964–2000, Emily Wakild

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines national efforts to protect wildlife in the twentieth century. Its focus is the vicuña, a small llama-like species native to the Andes, which nearly went extinct due to the high economic value of its wool. Instead, the Peruvian national government—despite significant regime shifts—intervened to put in place and then perpetuate a series of conservation measures, including trade restrictions and a territorial reserve, that protected the population and allowed it to rebound. Using a combination of cultural, economic, political, and biological methods to understand the animals and people concerned about them, this article argues that conservation reoriented relationships …
