A carbon budget for the northwest European continental shelf seas (NWES) was synthesized using available estimates for coastal, pelagic and benthic carbon stocks and flows. Key uncertainties were identified and the effect of future impacts on the carbon budget were assessed. The water of the shelf seas contains between 210 and 230 Tmol of carbon and absorbs between 1.3 and 3.3 Tmol …

The Perfect Game: An Ecological Systems Approach To The Influences Of Elite Youth And High School Baseball Socialization, Max Klein, Charles Macaulay, Joseph Cooper Mar 2020

The Perfect Game: An Ecological Systems Approach To The Influences Of Elite Youth And High School Baseball Socialization, Max Klein, Charles Macaulay, Joseph Cooper

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

The purpose of this study was to examine the elite youth and high school baseball socialization process as a whole and the role of professionalization and corporatization in this process. The unique nature of baseball’s development model in the United States (U.S.), through a dual-track feeder system (college or minor leagues) allows for a wide-range of challenges and sociological factors to influence elite youth and high school prospects. Understanding players’ experiences exposes these challenges and sociological factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four former elite youth and high school baseball players, one parent of a player, two coaches, and two …

“They Didn’T Burn Down Our Spirit”: Heritage Terrorism And The Resurgence Of Black Church Burnings In The Age Of Obama, Jajuan Shonel Johnson Mar 2020

“They Didn’T Burn Down Our Spirit”: Heritage Terrorism And The Resurgence Of Black Church Burnings In The Age Of Obama, Jajuan Shonel Johnson

Student Theses and Dissertations

The burning of Black churches motivated by racial hatred has an extensive history in America that persists. Drawing largely from primary resources, the dissertation analyzes the resurgence of Black church fires during both terms of President Barack Obama, the first Black president of the United States. The definition of heritage terrorism is applied to churches intentionally burned, particularly the arsons motivated by hatred. The study examines specific arson cases and explains the implications burnings have on the tangible and intangible heritage of communities impacted. Lastly, the study highlights the courage and resilience of communities that rebuilt in the aftermath of …

Arkansas In The African American Imaginary: A Rhetoric Of Place, Carmen Lanos Williams Mar 2020

Arkansas In The African American Imaginary: A Rhetoric Of Place, Carmen Lanos Williams

Student Theses and Dissertations

Due to the history of racism in America, African Americans have always held a conflicted relationship with it. This is true in both regional and local contexts. This study imagines the ways in which African American Arkansans are contributing to the notion of “place” in both real and imagined ways via published fiction, oral histories, and memoirs. The bildungsroman, or coming of age genre, serves to unify seeming disparate genres in the project, as all texts in the study depict growing up in Arkansas. The most comprehensive treatment of Arkansas as a place may be found in Brooks Blevins’s cultural …

Trends In Hospital Prices: Evidence From Hospital Chargemasters, Ulysse G. Mccann Iii Mar 2020

Trends In Hospital Prices: Evidence From Hospital Chargemasters, Ulysse G. Mccann Iii

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In light of recent price transparency laws, this paper examines evidence from hospital list prices, contained on “chargemasters,” with regard to price trends over time, price variation between hospitals, and price variation between categories of goods and services provided by hospitals. I use data from California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) for 32 general acute care hospitals in Los Angeles County from 2011–2019. The data shows that the average list price for hospitals in the sample rises by about 3% annually. Prices between hospitals in the sample, which are similar in geography and the population served, vary …

The Rising Risk Of Terrorism In The Philippines And Natural Resource Corruption, Blair Mills Mar 2020

The Rising Risk Of Terrorism In The Philippines And Natural Resource Corruption, Blair Mills

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

As foreign fighters, who had previously traveled to the Middle East to conduct operations under the flag of ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), return to the Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia, they are bringing their ideologies and knowledge of terrorist operations with them. In addition to tracking the growing trend of terrorist attacks being conducted in the Philippines in the name of ISIL, it is crucial to determine how these returning fighters are gathering the funds and resources necessary to carry out these attacks and establish new terrorist cells. This question of how returning terrorists …

The Role Of Supplier Performance Evaluations In Mitigating Risk: Assessing Evaluation Processes And Behaviors, Timothy G. Hawkins, Michael J. Gravier, William A. Muir Mar 2020

The Role Of Supplier Performance Evaluations In Mitigating Risk: Assessing Evaluation Processes And Behaviors, Timothy G. Hawkins, Michael J. Gravier, William A. Muir

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

Given the level of outsourcing, supplier performance evaluation (SPE) is a critical supply chain process. SPEs are used to record supplier performance levels to inform future supplier selections, and thus mitigate the risk of adverse selection. Numerous weaknesses associated with industrial buyers' collection and use of supplier performance information call SPE effectiveness into question. The risk-related factors affecting SPE effectiveness have not been empirically explored, including misuses of the tool. This research identifies the factors affecting SPE risk mitigation effectiveness. It employs a mixed method of qualitative interviews of buyers and suppliers in order to develop a model of SPE …

Evaluation Of The Potential Geological And Socioeconomic Impacts Of The Imminent Cascadia Megathrust Earthquake, Matthew Pritchard Mar 2020

Evaluation Of The Potential Geological And Socioeconomic Impacts Of The Imminent Cascadia Megathrust Earthquake, Matthew Pritchard

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The Cascadia Subduction Zone on the northwest coast of the United States poses the threat of a devastating megathrust earthquake and subsequent tsunami damaging coastal populations. This paper synthesizes literature to analyze the geologic and socioeconomic effects of this natural disaster, as well as examines the existing warning system infrastructure, and makes recommendations to mitigate the damage. In order to assess the geologic effects of a megathrust earthquake, I investigate the tectonic history, the role of episodic tremor and slip (ETS) in stress buildup, crustal architecture of the subduction zone, and analogous subduction zones such as Chile and Japan. This …

Tending The Fire: Wildfire Risk Management At The Interface, Cody R. Evers Mar 2020

Tending The Fire: Wildfire Risk Management At The Interface, Cody R. Evers

Dissertations and Theses

Escalating loss from wildfire in the American West has made clear the need to rethink wildfire risk, including how such risks result from the unique interaction of social and natural dynamics within the wildland urban interface. Unfortunately, techniques for studying these interactions remain limited. The intent of this research is to address this gap. In each of four chapters, I examine different aspects of wildfire risk management through a coupled human-natural lens. I document how wildfire activity has shifted over three decades across forest and shrubland systems in the western US and connect these changes to the simultaneous growth in …

Money Matters: Academic Library Scholarship And Funding Initiatives For Graduate Students, Wendy Doucette, Elizabeth Kline Mar 2020

Money Matters: Academic Library Scholarship And Funding Initiatives For Graduate Students, Wendy Doucette, Elizabeth Kline

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Graduate programs in all disciplines view external funding as a benchmark of success. For students on research teams and for those seeking academic careers, faculty role models demonstrate the need for funding as an integral part of the research cycle. Closer to home, the increasing cost of graduate education requires students seek supplemental funding. This session, divided into two segments (internal and external funding), will present experiential case studies for how academic libraries can design scholarships and fellowships to serve graduate students in this often overlooked phase of their graduate education.

Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has …

Examining The Employment Profile Of Institutions Under The Mission-Driven Classification System And The Impact Of Collective Bargaining, Louis Shedd, Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel Bray Mar 2020

Examining The Employment Profile Of Institutions Under The Mission-Driven Classification System And The Impact Of Collective Bargaining, Louis Shedd, Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel Bray

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The focus of this study is an analysis of institutions, salary expenditures, employment categories (full-time professors by academic rank), and number and average pay of full-time faculty. Our new mission-driven classification system provides the framework for the analysis and specifically presents the data by both the presence or lack of a collective bargaining agreement. The goal of this paper is to illustrate differences in monetary compensation of full time faculty using the mission-driven classification system (as opposed to the Carnegie Classification) and to see the impact of the presence or lack of collective bargaining agreements. We argue that the Carnegie …

Narrateur, Narration Et Roman À Thèse Dans Sérotonine, Gerald Prince Mar 2020

Narrateur, Narration Et Roman À Thèse Dans Sérotonine, Gerald Prince

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau Mar 2020

Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The Philippines is commonly understood to occupy an anomalous position in Southeast Asian area studies. This essay explores the logic, politics, and logistics of the inclusion and exclusion of the Philippines in or from Southeast Asian studies. Perspectives on and from the Philippines can help rethink and refine concepts of “region” by emphasizing, rather than glossing over, the transregional connections and histories that link the Philippines and its localities to its neighbors, to various regions, and to the world. Area studies need not be hobbled by an intellectual parochialism that cordons off analysis at any given local, national, regional, and …

De Estatura Regular: Height And Filipino Bodily Representations During The Spanish Colonial Period (1521–1898), Gideon; University Lasco

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle seeks to contribute to the “history of height” in the Philippines by looking at Filipino bodily representations and height differences during the Spanish colonial period. From Pigafetta’s account onward, European chroniclers typically described Indios (natives) as having average, varied, or unremarkable height. However, during the nineteenth century a new discourse emerged: that of a short-statured Filipino. Likely the consequence of actual physical changes and nascent racial ideologies on the part of Spaniards, this view would set the stage for Filipinos to be typologizedas “short”—and for shortness to be problematized as a sign of racial and social inferiority.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • …

« Ceindre La Terre » : Sur Quelques Tours Du Monde, Jean-François Duclos Mar 2020

« Ceindre La Terre » : Sur Quelques Tours Du Monde, Jean-François Duclos

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

Forgetting The Mine Wars: Erasing Insurrection In West Virginia History, Samuel Heywood Mar 2020

Forgetting The Mine Wars: Erasing Insurrection In West Virginia History, Samuel Heywood

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the concerted effort in the West Virginia school system to forget a massive labor movement in the early 20th century. Business leaders and government leaders turned to the classroom to try and control the memory of future generations to ensure a positive perception of the coal industry and avoid any more violent confrontations. After a brief summary of the Mine Wars for context, this thesis uses textbooks to analyze how the authors omitted the conflict and instead used patriotic propaganda to create loyal citizens. Although the Mine Wars have since been included in state history textbooks, …

Earliest African Evidence Of Carcass Processing And Consumption In Cave At 700 Ka, Casablanca, Morocco, Camille Daujeard, Christophe Falguères, Qingfeng Shao

KIP Articles

To date, in Africa, evidence for animal processing and consumption in caves routinely used as living spaces is only documented in the late Middle Pleistocene of the North and South of the continent and postdates the Middle Pleistocene in East Africa. Here we report the earliest evidence in a North-African cave (Grotte des Rhinocéros at Casablanca, Morocco) of cut, percussion and human gnawing marks on faunal remains directly associated with lithic knapping activities in the same space and in a well-documented stratified context. Ages for this Acheulean site are provided by the dating of herbivorous teeth to 690–720 ka and …

Signal-Herding In Cryptocurrencies, D Philippas, N Philippas, P Tziogkidis, H Rjiba Mar 2020

Signal-Herding In Cryptocurrencies, D Philippas, N Philippas, P Tziogkidis, H Rjiba

Plymouth Business School

The paper examines the influence of informative signals derived from exogenous factors on herding intensity in the cryptocurrency market. We propose a novel approach whereby extracted signals are endogenized in investors’ decision-making. The signals may induce investors to converge towards (depart from) the market consensus, contributing to herding amplification (dampening). The findings reveal substantial asymmetries with respect to the intensity of herding stemming from exogenous influences. We conclude that the evidenced diversity is indicative of the value that investors attach to the information embedded in the different external signals they receive.

Dynamic Of Soil Mesofauna Of Fixed Sand Dunes On The Songnen Grasslands, Northeastern China, Xiuqin Yin, Zhenhai Wang, Dandan Zhang

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasslands cover vast land areas in semi-arid and semi-humid regions. Sand dunes, most of which are fixed sand dunes, form a large portion of grasslands. Vegetation on fixed sand dunes is an important part of grassland ecosystem productivity, and topographic position is one of the important factors resulting in the differences among vegetation, soil, etc. (Sakai and Ohsawa, 1994; Nagamatsu and Miura, 1997).

An important component of soil fauna ecology is to analyze the distribution of soil fauna and its influencing factors. On the small scale, the ozone factors become the dominant factor affecting the soil fauna (Frouz et al., …

The Inluence Of Traditional Police Culture On The Activities Of School Resource OCers, Benjamin W. Fisher, F. Chris Curran, Samantha Viano, John Skinner Mar 2020

The Inluence Of Traditional Police Culture On The Activities Of School Resource OCers, Benjamin W. Fisher, F. Chris Curran, Samantha Viano, John Skinner

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"School resource officers (SROs) have become increasingly prevalent in U.S. public schools, yet critics suggest that there is an inherent incompatibility between the cultures of police and education. However, research has not examined the extent to which some of the potentially incompatible elements of police culture exist among SROs. This study examines three elements of traditional police culture that are likely to be particularly incompatible with school settings— suspicion, danger anticipation, and unpredictability. Given SROs’ involvement in roles such as teaching and informal counseling that extend beyond the typical duties of police officers, it is unclear whether these elements of …
