Mathematics Identity And Achievement Among Black Students, Lidia Gonzalez, Shawnda Chapman Brown, Juan Battle

Publications and Research

Employing data from the National Center of Educational Statistics’ (NCES) High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS) and utilizing critical race theory and intersectionality as theoretical frameworks, this article interrogates the relationship between mathematics identity and math success for a nationwide sample of Black secondary school students. More specifically, hierarchical regression modeling is employed to examine the relative impact of math identity, demographic variables, and school/parent social capital variables on the math grade point averages of this sample. The article ends with a discussion of specific steps for teaching mathematics that put the identity of those from traditionally marginalized communities at the …

Wildfire In The West: How Megafires And Storm Events Affect Stream Chemistry And Nutrient Dynamics In Semi-Arid Watersheds, Trevor William Crandall Mar 2020

Wildfire In The West: How Megafires And Storm Events Affect Stream Chemistry And Nutrient Dynamics In Semi-Arid Watersheds, Trevor William Crandall

Theses and Dissertations

Climate change is causing larger wildfires and more extreme precipitation events throughout the world. As these ecological disturbances increasingly coincide, they are altering lateral fluxes of sediment, organic matter, and nutrients. Increased lateral flux of nutrients could exacerbate eutrophication and associated harmful algal blooms, and increased sediment and organic matter flux could degrade the water supply. Here, we report the immediate stream chemistry response of watersheds in central Utah (USA) that were affected by a megafire followed by an extreme precipitation event in 2018. The wildfires burned throughout the summer of 2018 until the remnants of Hurricane Rosa released torrential …

Artificial And Natural Radionuclides In Cryoconite As Tracers Of Supraglacial Dynamics: Insights From The Morteratsch Glacier (Swiss Alps), G Baccolo, M Nastasi, C Clason, B Di Mauro, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Cryoconite, a sediment found on the surface of glaciers, is known for its ability to accumulate radionuclides. New data on cryoconite from the Morteratsch glacier (Switzerland) are presented to shed light on the mechanisms that control the distribution of radioactivity in cryoconite. Among the radionuclides detected in our samples, we have identified 108mAg, an artificial species which has never been observed in terrestrial environments before. This finding supports that cryoconite has an extraordinary ability to accumulate radioactivity. Our results also show that the radioactivity of cryoconite from a single glacier is far from uniform. Both the absolute amount of radioactivity …

Government Speech Doctrine—Legislator-Led Prayer's Saving Grace, Daniel M. Vitagliano Mar 2020

Government Speech Doctrine—Legislator-Led Prayer's Saving Grace, Daniel M. Vitagliano

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that Lund was decided incorrectly in part because the Fourth Circuit failed to analyze the type of speech at issue before assessing the constitutionality of the prayer practice. This Note is composed of four parts. Part I surveys the Supreme Court’s legislative prayer jurisprudence—Marsh and Town of Greece. Part II outlines Lund and Bormuth, and the Fourth and Sixth Circuits’ dissimilar applications of the Supreme Court’s precedent. Part III argues that courts must first classify legislative prayers as either government or private speech before assessing whether a prayer practice violates the Establishment Clause. It further argues …

The Obama's unveiled their official portraits for the National Portrait Gallery in 2018, forever changing the presidential tone by being the first portraits of Black Americans in these roles but also because they selected two Black artists to depict them, Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. As a White woman, secondary school art educator of diverse students, I witnessed this event as a significant moment in time. Discussing what was immediately visible: portraiture, compositional formats, and use of pattern, but I was unsure how to connect the layered meanings of each portrait. As a veteran teacher, I had implemented different curricula …

On Selected Subclasses Of Matroids, Tara Elizabeth Fife Mar 2020

On Selected Subclasses Of Matroids, Tara Elizabeth Fife

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matroids were introduced by Whitney to provide an abstract notion of independence.

In this work, after giving a brief survey of matroid theory, we describe structural results for various classes of matroids. A connected matroid $M$ is unbreakable if, for each of its flats $F$, the matroid $M/F$ is connected%or, equivalently, if $M^*$ has no two skew circuits. . Pfeil showed that a simple graphic matroid $M(G)$ is unbreakable exactly when $G$ is either a cycle or a complete graph. We extend this result to describe which graphs are the underlying graphs of unbreakable frame matroids. A laminar family is …

Do Public Program Benefits Crowd Out Private Transfers In Developing Countries? A Critical Review Of Recent Evidence, Plamen Nikolov, Matthew Bonci Mar 2020

Do Public Program Benefits Crowd Out Private Transfers In Developing Countries? A Critical Review Of Recent Evidence, Plamen Nikolov, Matthew Bonci

Economics Faculty Scholarship

Precipitated by rapid globalization, rising inequality, population growth, and longevity gains, social protection programs have been on the rise in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the last three decades. However, the introduction of public benefits could displace informal mechanisms for risk-protection, which are especially prevalent in LMICs. If the displacement of private transfers is considerably large, the expansion of social protection programs could even lead to social welfare loss. In this paper, we critically survey the recent empirical literature on crowd-out effects in response to public policies, specifically in the context of LMICs. We review and synthesize patterns from …

A Conceptual Map Of Invasion Biology: Integrating Hypotheses Into A Consensus Network, Laura A. Meyerson, Et Al Mar 2020

A Conceptual Map Of Invasion Biology: Integrating Hypotheses Into A Consensus Network, Laura A. Meyerson, Et Al

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Background and aims

Since its emergence in the mid‐20th century, invasion biology has matured into a productive research field addressing questions of fundamental and applied importance. Not only has the number of empirical studies increased through time, but also has the number of competing, overlapping and, in some cases, contradictory hypotheses about biological invasions. To make these contradictions and redundancies explicit, and to gain insight into the field’s current theoretical structure, we developed and applied a Delphi approach to create a consensus network of 39 existing invasion hypotheses.

Results

The resulting network was analysed with a link‐clustering algorithm that revealed …

Rapid Simulation And Volume Rendering Of Electromagnetic Environment Based On Geographic Coordinate System, Yuguo Wu, Beibei Han Mar 2020

Rapid Simulation And Volume Rendering Of Electromagnetic Environment Based On Geographic Coordinate System, Yuguo Wu, Beibei Han

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Considering the earth's curvature, the spherical regular grid model is used to organize the electromagnetic field data. In order to reduce computational complexity of ITM model, the terrain reuse is proposed to improve the efficiency of the simulation. The Multithread and the terrain reuse are combined to improve the efficiency of the multi-radiation source. Considering that the traditional ray casting algorithm which takes the cube model as the bounding box cannot draw spherical regular grid data directly, a ray casting algorithm which uses the dome model as the bounding box is proposed. Experiments show that even considering the influence …

Genomics And Population History Of Black-Headed Bulbul (Brachypodius Atriceps) Color Morphs, Subir B. Shakya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Intraspecific polymorphism in birds, especially color polymorphism, is an area of active research in evolutionary biology. In this dissertation, I applied WGS to uncover the potential genetic underpinnings of color polymorphism in the Black-headed Bulbul (Brachypodius atriceps) of Southeast Asia. This species was selected because of the heterogeneous dispersion of two morphs across its range: a yellow form predominating on mainland Asia and the Greater Sunda Islands and a gray morph on two islands—Bawean and Maratua.

I approached this project from three angles. First, I reconstructed the phylogeny of the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae, to examine patterns of coloration …

Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas Mar 2020

Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas

Research in the Capitol

From “multi-” to “hyper-” spectral, remote sensing capacities have improved tremendously in how we measure Earth’s unique signatures. Unfortunately, shadow detection and correction remain an issue in most images, especially those with high spatial resolution. Shadows result when direct sun light is obstructed and the spectral reflectance values for pixels in those regions decrease. Many successful approaches exist to correct this blue skew to shorter wavelengths, but it can be daunting to truly assess which approach to employ since each require different levels of priori knowledge. This research attempts to generate and cross-validate shadow masks using popular GIS software. The goal …

Understanding parasite diversity and distribution is essential in managing the potential impact of para- sitic diseases in animals and people. Imperfect diagnostic methods, however, may conceal cryptic species. Here, we report the discovery and phylogeography of a previously unrecognized species of Trichinella in wolverine (Gulo gulo) from northwestern Canada that was indistinguishable from T. nativa using the stan- dard multiplex PCR assay based on the expansion segment 5 (ESV) of ribosomal DNA. The novel genotype, designated as T13, was discovered when sequencing the mitochondrial genome. Phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial genome and of 15 concatenated single-copy orthologs of nuclear DNA …

Changing Geographies Of Flood Mitigation Policies: A Case Study Of Central, Louisiana, Ria Mukerji Mar 2020

Changing Geographies Of Flood Mitigation Policies: A Case Study Of Central, Louisiana, Ria Mukerji

LSU Master's Theses

In 2016, the Baton Rouge region experienced what would come to be record-setting precipitation levels. The 1,000 year rainfall event dumped almost triple the amount of water on Louisiana than was seen during Hurricane Katrina (some areas received over 10 inches of rain in a matter of hours), with rain persisting from August 12th until the 17th. Previously a part of Baton Rouge, Central is a relatively new development that expanded into the 100 year floodplain in 2005. This thesis will present the changing geographies of flood mitigation policies since a major flood in 1983 to the …
