Tiny House: Reflection On Participatory Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry In The Kampung Community, Elita Nuraeny, Amira Paramitha, Herlily Herlily
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
At the end of 2015, the government of Jakarta declared a river normalization program to widen both banks of the Ciliwung River and increase its channel capacity. Approximately 15 meters of inspection road was to be constructed immediately. To avoid eviction, 223 households in Kampung Anak Kali (KAKC) reduced their domestic spaces by shearing five meters off their houses, forcing them to allocate less space for daily activities, including cooking, bathing, and washing. Living in a tight space, constructing a tiny house is a necessity, not a lifestyle choice. The residents of KAKC, therefore, live in limited areas for survival, …

Impact Of Excessive Pumping On Groundwater Quality: The Arsenic Problem Of The Ganges–Meghna–Brahmaputra Delta In Southeast Asia, Rhitwik Chatterjee, Mousumi Chowdhury
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
This review of the impact of large-scale pumping on arsenic distribution reveals that groundwater-fed irrigation and domestic withdrawal impart tremendous stress on the limited groundwater resource base and disrupts the dynamic equilibrium of the groundwater system of the Ganges–Meghna–Brahmaputra (GMB) delta in Southeast Asia. Excessive groundwater extraction through pumping affects the groundwater quality in three major ways. First, excessive pumping transports atmospheric oxygen and organic-rich surface water to the subsurface. Second, it promotes arsenic build up in surface soil irrigated with arsenic-laced groundwater. Finally, it shifts groundwater replenishment zones lying at various depths near extraction points, thus, carrying dissolved arsenic …

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic cotrimoxazole treatment is recommended in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed, uninfected (HEU) infants, but the effects of this treatment on developing HEU infant gut microbiotas and resistomes are largely undefined.
METHODS: We analyzed whole-metagenome sequencing data from 163 longitudinally collected stool samples from 63 HEU infants randomized to receive (n = 34; CTX-T) or to not receive (n = 29; CTX-N) prophylactic cotrimoxazole treatment. We generated taxonomic, functional pathway, and resistance gene profiles for each sample and compared microbiome signatures between the CTX-T and CTX-N infants.
RESULTS: Metagenomic analysis did not reveal significant differences in taxonomic or functional pathway …

This research aims to assess the impact of conditional cash transfer (PKH) program on infant welfare. The poor people usually treated their babies inadequately due to of lack of resources. Government intervention by social protection program is expected to contribute to increase infant welfare. Infant welfare determines their quality of future life, and to some extent will determine the quality of human resources in a country. This research uses two micro data set which are Indonesia family life survey (IFLS) 4 and 5. The method is using econometrics with difference-in-differences (DiD) model to measure impact of the CCT program. Then, …
Two Politicizations Of U.S. Antitrust Law, Frank Pasquale, Jacqueline Green
Two Politicizations Of U.S. Antitrust Law, Frank Pasquale, Jacqueline Green
Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law
Critics have accused the Trump Department of Justice (DOJ) and Trump-appointee-chaired Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of populism, deviating from the more technocratic standards that governed agency interventions during the Bush and Obama eras. The broad brush of politicization has been applied to the administration's handling of a wide variety of topics, ranging from marijuana and media mergers, to landmark lawsuits against Google and Facebook. But a more discerning eye is necessary here. The concept of the political has both authoritarian and democratic registers. The federal Google and Facebook antitrust cases reflected the democratization of high technology antitrust. Meanwhile, troublingly authoritarian …

Consumers' Declining Power In The Fintech Auto Loan Market, Pamela Foohey
Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law
Automobiles have become part of America’s infrastructure. For most people, having access to a car is crucial to their livelihoods and they will take on significant amounts of debt to purchase vehicles. Auto debt is unlike any other consumer debt, both in its structure, which allows creditors to easily seize collateral, and in its lack of regulation. The unique and lucrative nature of auto debt has not gone unnoticed by lenders or by companies leveraging fintech to offer people new ways to purchase cars and car loans. This Article assesses the evolving marketplace for auto sales, leasing, and loans to …
Super-Diversity Inside And Outside Of Congregations In Elmhurst, Queens, Richard Cimino, Hans Tokke
Super-Diversity Inside And Outside Of Congregations In Elmhurst, Queens, Richard Cimino, Hans Tokke
Publications and Research
This chapter looks at the role congregations play in a “superdiverse” neighborhood, characterized by recent immigration and strong ethic and religious pluralism. We are particularly interested in how diversity shapes a neighborhood’s religious ecology and how congregations and other groups relate to their neighborhood; how do they respond to this diversity in their ministries to their own congregants and to those outside their walls, and how do they interact with other faith communities? Further, to what degree do individuals follow the ideal of pluralism as they live their lives within their own enclave? We find that bonding rather than bridging …

The Impact Of Perceived Accessibility To Mrt Service And Perceived Neighborhood Safety On Quality Of Life: A Study In Malaysia, Sharon Lim, Wai-Chun Wong, Zhen-Xi Wu, Chee-Seng Tan
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Quality of life (QoL) has long been studied by researchers. As a part of the Malaysian government’s efforts to improve citizens’ QoL, in 2017, a new mass rapid transit (MRT) service was launched in Selangor. Although past studies support that access to public transportation service increases QoL, no study has directly examined the relationship between accessibility to the new MRT service and QoL. Thus, a cross-sectional study was designed to test the effects of perceived accessibility to the new MRT service and perceived safety on QoL. Two hundred and fourteen MRT users were recruited using convenience and online snowball sampling …
A Silicon Valley Life: A Silicon Valley Love Story, Sharon Simonson
A Silicon Valley Life: A Silicon Valley Love Story, Sharon Simonson
Master's Theses
In the last three decades, Silicon Valley has become one of the world’s most watched and imitated communities. Daily news reporters, long-form journalists, cinema and television-programming producers have crafted a public image, but it represents nothing of the lives of hundreds of thousands of Valley residents. These fabrications obscure and diminish our complex human profile and reduce our uniquely beautiful geography to a place to generate financial profits, with all the damaging disregard such attitudes foster. The essays of A Silicon Valley Life: A Silicon Valley Love Story seek to show our true self: our rich mix of people drawn …

Prevalence Of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder And Association With Nutrition Status In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Emily Yelencich
Master's Theses
There is a large body of research on the relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and diet; however, few conclusive, generalizable recommendations have been determined. Regardless, IBD patients often alter their normal dietary intake, which is concerning considering the prevalence of malnutrition in the IBD population. Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding disorder that was recently added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and its prevalence and impact on the nutritional status of IBD patients has not previously been described. In this study ARFID risk was measured using the Nine-Item ARFID Screen and in the …

Assessing Airborne Radar To Map Glacier Elevations In Alpine Terrain Including Estimated Glacier Volume Change, Bryce Allen Glenn
Dissertations and Theses
Alpine glaciers and perennial snowfields (G&PS) are important hydrologically and ecologically, providing meltwater during the hottest and driest summer periods. Climate warming shrinks these natural reservoirs while temporarily providing increased streamflow. To assess regional changes in glacier volume, from which contribution to streamflow can be estimated, I used NASA's Airborne Glacier and Ice Surface Topography Interferometer (GLISTIN). This instrument mapped the surface topography of alpine glaciers; differencing these elevations from historic elevations derived from topographic maps, volume change is calculated. GLISTIN was flown over the glacier-populated mountain ranges of the western U.S. Of the 3289 glaciers and perennial snowfields with …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
An indispensable desideratum in collaborative spaces is to foster dynamic, barrier-free environments where professionals from different backgrounds can find common ground for collaborative projects. However, although such goals cannot be met without proficient and effective communication, research on the use of language as the most important means of information exchange in collaborative spaces is still needed. Our contribution in this chapter consists in exploring the linguistic interactions among coworkers of such spaces. We propose a multidisciplinary approach integrating insights from the organizational literature on communication and research methods in theoretical linguistics. The sociolinguistic analysis of two coworking spaces reveals essential …

Legal Complications Of Repatriation At The British Museum, Hannah R. Godwin
Legal Complications Of Repatriation At The British Museum, Hannah R. Godwin
Washington International Law Journal
The British Museum has been the target of criticism around the world for its failure to repatriate controversial cultural property to their respective countries of origin. In 1753, a private collector left his collection to Great Britain if it agreed to build a public museum and designate a Board of Trustees whose duty was to protect the collection for the public. Statutorily incorporating the collector’s intent, Parliament passed legislation binding the Board of Trustees to abide by certain principles, including preserving the collection and prohibiting disposal of objects, except in very few circumstances. As such, the Museum is administrated through …
A Distant Reading Of Khamphun Bunthawi’S Luk Isan (A Child Of The Northeast) As World Literature, Ram Prasansak
A Distant Reading Of Khamphun Bunthawi’S Luk Isan (A Child Of The Northeast) As World Literature, Ram Prasansak
Journal of Letters
This article offers a distant reading of Khamphun Bunthawi’s Luk Isan (A Child of the Northeast) as world literature. By attending to its production, circulation, translation, and reception in an interlocking literary system, it shows that the novel borrows the bildungsroman form from an American children’s novel. This borrowing underlines the role of translated literature and editors in establishing a profoundly unequal relationship between the Western core and peripheral literatures. This article also examines the English translation of Luk Isan. It argues that while the translation creates an intertext that aids Anglophone audiences in comprehending the novel’s foreignness, it …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The museum as an institution devoted to cultural preservation began to utilize social media as a medium of communication to the public. Some museums around the world since the early 2000s have used social media to create a new face or rebrand in giving an update to the public. Generally, the term for museums that utilize technology in practice, is called Museum 2.0. In this research, researchers aimed to explore Instagram content as a medium of historical education through qualitative content analysis. The formulation of the problem in this research is to know how the contents of the National Museum …
Salt Marsh Elevation Limit Determined After Subsidence From Hydrologic Change And Hydrocarbon Extraction, R. Eugene Turner, Yu Mo
Salt Marsh Elevation Limit Determined After Subsidence From Hydrologic Change And Hydrocarbon Extraction, R. Eugene Turner, Yu Mo
Faculty Publications
Levee construction aboveground and hydrocarbon removal from belowground in coastal wetlands can create hydrologic changes that increase plant stress through flooding. But the significance of the subsidence they cause individually or in combination is contested. This study untangled them to demonstrate elevational limits of salt marshes by studying dredged and natural waterways in two salt marshes in Louisiana, USA. The areas had a homogenous plant cover before drilling for oil and gas extraction peaked in the 1960s, and now are a mixed network of natural waterways and dredged canals used to drill wells with an average drill date of 1965.8 …

Introduction
Obesity disproportionately affects rural communities, and Appalachia has some of the highest obesity rates in the nation. Successful policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) interventions to reduce obesity must reflect the circumstances of the population. We used a health equity lens to identify barriers and facilitators for healthy food access in Martin County, Kentucky, to design interventions responsive to social, cultural, and historical contexts.
Methods
We conducted 5 focus groups in Martin County, Kentucky, in fall 2019 to obtain perspectives on the local food system and gauge acceptability of PSE interventions. We used grounded theory to identify perceived barriers and …

Environmental And Spatial Factors Affecting Surface Water Quality In A Himalayan Watershed, Central Nepal, Janardan Mainali, Heejun Chang
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Various spatial interrelationships among sampling stations are not well explored in the spatial modeling of water quality literature. This research explores the relationship between water quality and various social, demographic, and topographic factors in an urbanizing watershed of Nepal with a comparison of different connectivity matrices to conceptualize spatial interrelationships. We collected electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen data from surface water bodies using a handheld probe and used the data to establish relationships with land use, topography, and population density-based explanatory variables at both watershed and 100-m buffer scales. The linear regression model was compared with different eigenvector-based spatial filtering …
