All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Arthropod pests and vectors constrain the livelihood opportunities of people in Africa by debilitating production of crops and livestock and through transmission of vector-borne diseases. In the absence of effective alternative management options to tackle these pests and vectors, there is extensive dependence on synthetic pesticides for their management on crop and livestock systems, with significant negative impacts on animal and human health, and the environment. Biopesticides are effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. At the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), the Arthropod Pathology Unit (APU) was established for effective biopesticide research-for-development (R4D), underpinned by …

The Zika Virus Individual Participant Data Consortium: A Global Initiative To Estimate The Effects Of Exposure To Zika Virus During Pregnancy On Adverse Fetal, Infant, And Child Health Outcomes, Yinghui Wei

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This commentary describes the creation of the Zika Virus Individual Participant Data Consortium, a global collaboration to address outstanding questions in Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemiology through conducting an individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA). The aims of the IPD-MA are to (1) estimate the absolute and relative risks of miscarriage, fetal loss, and short- and long-term sequelae of fetal exposure; (2) identify and quantify the relative importance of different sources of heterogeneity (e.g., immune profiles, concurrent flavivirus infection) for the risk of adverse fetal, infant, and child outcomes among infants exposed to ZIKV in utero; and (3) develop and validate a …

Negative Consequences Of Innovation-Igniting Urban Developments: Empirical Evidence From Three Us Cities, Ahoura Zandiatashbar, Carla Maria Kayanan Sep 2020

Negative Consequences Of Innovation-Igniting Urban Developments: Empirical Evidence From Three Us Cities, Ahoura Zandiatashbar, Carla Maria Kayanan

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

Emergent economic development policies reflect the challenges urban growth coalitions face in attracting the footloose tech-entrepreneurs of the global economy. This convergence between the focus on place and the harnessing of global capital has led to the proliferation of innovation-igniting urban developments (IIUD)—place-based economic development strategies to boost the local knowledge economy. Economic developers are using IIUD strategies to convert areas of the city into entrepreneurial “launch pads” for innovation. However, because these developments remain young, considerations to implement IIUDs lack an evidence-base to show the potential for negative consequences on the communities where they are embedded. This research addresses …

Techs And The Cities: A New Economic Development Paradigm?, Gary Sands, Pierre Filion, Laura A. Reese

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Large technology firms pose new challenges for local economic development in the 21st century. They are attractive targets for local economic developers because they have the potential of providing permanent, well-paying jobs. This article examines two mega-economic development deals. Amazon’s proposed second headquarters in Queens and Sidewalk Labs’ Quayside proposal for the Toronto waterfront pit large and prosperous Big Tech firms against local governments with healthy economies. Amazon abandoned the New York City site it had chosen, rather than open new negotiations with local officials and citizens. Sidewalk Labs withdrew from the Quayside proposal after two and a half years …

Property Value Impacts Of Commercial-Scale Solar Energy In Massachusetts And Rhode Island, Vasundhara Gaur, Corey Lang Sep 2020

Property Value Impacts Of Commercial-Scale Solar Energy In Massachusetts And Rhode Island, Vasundhara Gaur, Corey Lang

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Working Papers

While utility-scale solar energy is important for reducing dependence on fossil fuels, solar arrays use significant amounts of land (about 5 acres per MW of capacity), and may create local land use disamenities. This paper seeks to quantify the externalities from nearby solar arrays using the hedonic method. We study the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, which have high population densities and ambitious renewable energy goals. We observe over 400,000 transactions within three miles of a solar site. Using a difference-in-differences, repeat sales identification strategy, results suggest that houses within one mile depreciate 1.7% following construction of a solar …

“She’S Me”: An Exploration Of Pet Ownership From The Perspective Of People Who Are Homeless, Lana Parker, Leonie Boland, Alison Warren

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

For many people who experience homelessness, having a pet is an important part of their lives. Although the benefit and meaning of pet ownership has been well recognized in the literature, few studies have explored its meaning from the perspectives of individuals who are homeless. This qualitative study explored the meaning of pet ownership from the perspectives of three men who previously or currently owned a pet while experiencing homelessness. In line with the chosen methodology, interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), semi-structured, in- depth interviews explored the phenomena of pet ownership. This paper is based on one of three themes from …

Trainable Structure Tensors For Autonomous Baggage Threat Detection Under Extreme Occlusion, Taimur Hassan, Samet Akçay, Mohammed Bennamoun, Salman Khan, Naoufel Werghi Sep 2020

Trainable Structure Tensors For Autonomous Baggage Threat Detection Under Extreme Occlusion, Taimur Hassan, Samet Akçay, Mohammed Bennamoun, Salman Khan, Naoufel Werghi

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Detecting baggage threats is one of the most difficult tasks, even for expert officers. Many researchers have developed computer-aided screening systems to recognize these threats from the baggage X-ray scans. However, all of these frameworks are limited in identifying the contraband items under extreme occlusion. This paper presents a novel instance segmentation framework that utilizes trainable structure tensors to highlight the contours of the occluded and cluttered contraband items (by scanning multiple predominant orientations), while simultaneously suppressing the irrelevant baggage content. The proposed framework has been extensively tested on four publicly available X-ray datasets where it outperforms the state-of-the-art frameworks …

Understanding The Impact Of Antibiotic Perturbation On The Human Microbiome, Drew J Schwartz, Amy E Langdon, Gautam Dantas Sep 2020

Understanding The Impact Of Antibiotic Perturbation On The Human Microbiome, Drew J Schwartz, Amy E Langdon, Gautam Dantas

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The human gut microbiome is a dynamic collection of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that performs essential functions for immune development, pathogen colonization resistance, and food metabolism. Perturbation of the gut microbiome's ecological balance, commonly by antibiotics, can cause and exacerbate diseases. To predict and successfully rescue such perturbations, first, we must understand the underlying taxonomic and functional dynamics of the microbiome as it changes throughout infancy, childhood, and adulthood. We offer an overview of the healthy gut bacterial architecture over these life stages and comment on vulnerability to short and long courses of antibiotics. Second, the resilience of the …

A Synthesis Of The Effects Of Cheatgrass Invasion On Us Great Basin Carbon Storage, R. Chelsea Nagy, Emily J. Fusco, Jennifer K. Balch, John T. Finn, Adam Mahood, Jenica M. Allen, Bethany A. Bradley Sep 2020

A Synthesis Of The Effects Of Cheatgrass Invasion On Us Great Basin Carbon Storage, R. Chelsea Nagy, Emily J. Fusco, Jennifer K. Balch, John T. Finn, Adam Mahood, Jenica M. Allen, Bethany A. Bradley

Articles

  1. Non-native, invasive Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) is pervasive in sagebrush ecosystems in the Great Basin ecoregion of the western United States, competing with native plants and promoting more frequent fires. As a result, cheatgrass invasion likely alters carbon (C) storage in the region. Many studies have measured C pools in one or more common vegetation types: native sagebrush, invaded sagebrush and cheatgrass-dominated (often burned) sites, but these results have yet to be synthesized.
  2. We performed a literature review to identify studies assessing the consequences of invasion on C storage in above-ground biomass (AGB), below-ground biomass (BGB), litter, organic soil and total …

Land resources are part of nature related to the availability of water, nutrients, and food that are dynamic and play an important role in the lives of living creatures, including humans. From time to time, land use experiences changes in response to human activities that benefit their lives. This research was conducted to determine trends in land use change in North Maluku Province, Indonesia, as well as to find out the land resource balance and land carrying capacity in the province. The methods comprised a simple descriptive and quantitative analysis along with spatial analysis using GIS. The results showed that …

When analyzing economic development, we must consider both the factors that can be changed through policy and those that cannot. This report includes our model for understanding and predicting economic growth in U.S. mid-sized regional economies to analyze structural and policy-based factors among similar regional economies. Our research used a multi-stage process that involved collecting 43 variables on a variety of topics that are associated with regional growth, such as educational attainment, business composition, regional assets, and quality of life. In total, our mid-sized regional economies encompass 135 metro areas, and includes populations spanning from 352,823 to 3.9 million. We …

High Impact Practices—Encouraging Empowerment And Self-Care Through Participatory Women’S Groups And Group Antenatal Care: Supporting Women To Be At The Center Of Their Own Care As Active Participants, Tracy Mcclair

Reproductive Health

The Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). This brief focuses on one of those strategies: encouraging empowerment and self-care through participatory women’s groups and group antenatal care. Key points presented are: highly participatory, group-based interventions—such as community-based women’s groups and group antenatal and postnatal care (ANC/PNC)—provide opportunities for women to share their experiences and knowledge with others, discuss the local context for challenges and how to address them, and promote empowerment and agency; participation in these groups is associated with …
