A Panel Data Model With Generalized Higher-Order Network Effects, Badi Baltagi, Sophia Ding, Peter Egger
A Panel Data Model With Generalized Higher-Order Network Effects, Badi Baltagi, Sophia Ding, Peter Egger
Center for Policy Research
Many data situations require the consideration of network effects among the cross-sectional units of observation. In this paper, we present a generalized panel model which accounts for two features: (i) three types of network effects on the right-hand side of the model, namely through weighted dependent variable, weighted exogenous variables, as well as weighted error components, and (ii) higher-order network effects due to ex-ante unknown network-decay functions or the presence of multiplex (or multi-layer) networks among all of those. We outline the model, the basic assumptions, and present simulation results.

Are Volunteers Competent In Positive Youth Development? Perceptions From Three Stakeholder Groups, Dustin Homan, Hannah Epley, Kirk Bloir
Are Volunteers Competent In Positive Youth Development? Perceptions From Three Stakeholder Groups, Dustin Homan, Hannah Epley, Kirk Bloir
Journal of Youth Development
Some youth organizations entrust adult volunteers with delivering programs and forging relationships with youth clientele. As a result, volunteers should be competent in certain knowledge, skills, and abilities that catalyze positive youth development processes to occur. This research expands upon the results of an initial study designed to address shortcomings of a volunteer competency framework. Our objective for this study was to assess and compare the discrepancies between importance and ability-to-perform ratings of adult volunteers across 6 competency areas from the Volunteer Research Knowledge Competency Taxonomy. Over 10,000 youth professionals, adult volunteers, and families of youth members responded to an …

West Chester University Green Legacy Project - Collections Management Plan, Office Of Sustainability
WCU Campus Sustainability Initiatives
The Green Legacy Project (GLP) was developed in 2009 to understand the value of the trees on the West Chester University campus. The overall goal of the GLP is to maintain a database of the current state of the university’s trees. This survey includes the collection of the field data of the trees (common name, Latin name, native status, Global Positioning System (GPS) location, diameter at breast height (DBH), height, ground cover, die back, and condition). These data are also analyzed using CITYgreen by American Forests as well as the i-Tree ECO model of the United States Department of Agriculture …

Purpose: Curcumin is known for its anticancer and migrastatic activity in various cancers, including breast cancer. Newer curcumin derivatives are being explored to overcome limitations of curcumin like low bioavailability, stability, and side effects due to its higher dose. In this study, the synthesis of ST09, a novel curcumin derivative, and its antiproliferative, cytotoxic, and migrastatic properties have been explored both in vitro and in vivo. Methods: After ST09 synthesis, anticancer activity was studied by performing standard cytotoxicity assays namely, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay, 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2-5-diphenyletrazolium bromide (MTT), and trypan blue exclusion assay. Annexin-FITC, cell cycle analysis using flow …

Réforme, Religion, Et Républicanism? The “Three Rs” Of Education In Nineteenth-Century France, Emma Novak , '22
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
The French Third Republic under Minister of Education Jules Ferry used public education to breach the sociopolitical divide between urban and rural France at the tail end of the nineteenth century. Ferry’s calls for secularization, centralization, and “republicanization” were countered by the Catholic Church, local governments, and rural families.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Of Navajo Nation Water Resources In The San Juan River Basin, Nm: Utilizing Traditional Navajo Ecological Knowledge, Kirena Elana Yanibaa Tsosie
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Navajo Nation consists of 110 chapters, local government subdivisions, organized into five regional agencies. Over half of the Navajo Nation chapters have traditional names in the Navajo language that describe a local water source including springs, washes, rivers, ponds, and reservoirs. Therefore, traditional Navajo names consist of Traditional Navajo Ecological Knowledge (TNEK) and can assist in documenting water sources that can be further assessed for vulnerability and sensitivity to climate change. There are 52 Navajo Nation chapters located in the San Juan River Basin and 28 chapters have water related names. Water sources associated with place names will also …

Food Deserts Of Las Vegas: An Overview With A Vertical Solution, David Sinclair
Honors College Faculty Research
National food insecurity is a persistent and growing problem, a problem that especially affects children.
This is a major problem that should be an unacceptable state of affairs: that arguably the richest and most powerful nation in human history should fail in providing such a basic need to its citizens. It is not an exaggeration to state the adults and children of Nevada are starving at an alarming rate. Clark County, Nevada, especially is not only a hot spot for hunger but is also seeing increased hunger due to the COVID pandemic and the failure of all levels of government …

Soccer And Sectarianism: Derry City F.C. And Irish Nationalism, Sectarian Tension, And The Catholic Community, 1970-1985, Nick Hirschel-Burns , '21
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This paper explores the role of Derry City F.C. in the sectarian conflict of The Troubles in Northern Ireland from 1970 to 1985. The experiences of Derry City as a soccer team were deeply intertwined with the pervasive sectarianism of Northern Ireland; through its sporting ventures, Derry City provided space to dream of a better future for Catholic nationalists in Northern Ireland.

The authoritarian nationalist government of Francisco Franco aggressively pushed the idea that Spain was a unified nation and culture. However, Spanish culture has always been varied, and possesses a great deal of influence from peoples considered to be deeply and fundamentally different – in particular, North African, Arab, and Muslim cultures. This influence has a long history, though Spanish nationalists in particular were inclined to present it as a brief foreign incursion that was ended by the Reconquista, which restored Spain back to its natural state.
Similarly, the nationalist government itself possessed a significant variety of political thought, with a …

The Chinese government promotes the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a global strategy for regional integration and infrastructure investment. With a projected US$1 trillion commitment from Chinese financial institutions, and at least 138 countries participating, the BRI is attracting intense debate. Yet most analysis to date focuses on broad drivers, risks, and opportunities, largely considered to be emanating from a coherent policy imposed by Beijing. In this special issue, we instead examine the BRI as a relational, contested process - a bundle of intertwined discourses, policies, and projects that sometimes align but are sometimes contradictory. We move beyond policy-level, …

Coordinated River Infrastructure Decisions Improve Net Social-Ecological Benefits, Samuel G. Roy, Adam Daigneault, Joseph Zydlewski, Allison Truhlar, Sean Smith, Shaleen Jain, David Hart
New Hampshire EPSCoR
We explore the social, ecological, economic, and technical dimensions of sustainable river infrastructure development and the potential benefits of coordinating decisions such as dam removal and stream crossing improvement. Dam removal is common practice for restoring river habitat connectivity and ecosystem health. However, stream crossings such as culverts are often 15 times more abundant than dams and may pose similar ecological impacts. Using multi-objective optimization for a model system of 6100 dams and culverts in Maine, USA, we demonstrate substantial benefit-cost improvements provided by coordinating habitat connectivity decisions. Benefit-cost efficiency improves by two orders of magnitude when coordinating more decisions …

Employee Churn In After-School Care: Manager Influences On Retention And Turnover, Michele Wilkens
Journal of Youth Development
This study examined field employee turnover at a national after-school program provider to assess the knowledge, skills, motivation, and organizational influences of those with the greatest impact on employee retention—area managers who oversee after-school programs and their frontline staff. Clark and Estes’ (2008) gap analysis served as the general conceptual framework for the study. A convergent parallel mixed methods case study was conducted using historical document analysis, surveys, interviews, and observations. Analysis revealed high employee retention (74%) as well as high turnover (62%), which can coexist when most staff are retained, but a smaller segment repeatedly churns over the same …

Race, Antiracism, And Youth Development: From Awareness To Sustained Action, Corliss Wilson Outley, Dale Blyth
Journal of Youth Development
After yet more vivid examples of how Black people are far too often treated unjustly in America and the enormous response worldwide, it is high time to recognize racism in our field and promote a strong and sustained commitment to antiracist approaches to research, publishing, practice, and policy in the youth development field. This essay begins to make the case for such efforts and calls for sustained action in many areas. These are things we can and must do as a field that supports the positive development of all youth.

Staying current on literature related to antimicrobial stewardship can be challenging given the ever-increasing number of published articles. The Southeastern Research Group Endeavor (SERGE-45) identified antimicrobial stewardship-related peer-reviewed literature that detailed an actionable intervention for 2019. The top 13 publications were selected using a modified Delphi technique. These manuscripts were reviewed to highlight the actionable intervention used by antimicrobial stewardship programs to provide key stewardship literature for teaching and training and to identify potential intervention opportunities within one's institution.
Re: The Pretrial Risk Assessment-How New Jersey's Bail Overhaul Is Shaping Bail Reform Across The Country, Andrea Coppola
Re: The Pretrial Risk Assessment-How New Jersey's Bail Overhaul Is Shaping Bail Reform Across The Country, Andrea Coppola
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that cash bail systems disproportionately affect low-income and minority defendants, leading to unnecessary pretrial detention. It advocates for the adoption of risk-based algorithms, such as New Jersey's Public Safety Assessment (PSA), to determine pretrial release, promoting fairness and efficiency. The PSA uses nine factors, excluding socioeconomic elements, to assess flight risk and public safety. The note also highlights Alaska's tailored approach, demonstrating the effectiveness of such tools when adapted to specific state needs. It concludes that widespread adoption of these algorithms, with proper safeguards, could reduce incarceration rates and enhance justice system equity.

This research evaluates opportunities for retrofitting residential streets with alterative designs with the overall goal of improving their function, reducing their negative impacts and reducing maintenance costs. This is accomplished through three main research tasks. First, we conduct a comprehensive review of the street design literature with a focus on studies that report how alterative or unique designs that are relevant to the residential street context affect travel behavior, traffic flow, safety, crime and environmental impacts. We then survey residential streets in several study neighborhoods to measure typical design features and cross sections. With this information we then evaluate which …

COVID-19 accentuates the case for a global, rather than an international, development paradigm. The novel disease is a prime example of a development challenge for all countries, through the failure of public health as a global public good. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the falsity of any assumption that the global North has all the expertise and solutions to tackle global challenges, and has further highlighted the need for multi-directional learning and transformation in all countries towards a more sustainable and equitable world. We illustrate our argument for a global development paradigm by examining the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic …

Managing the wildland-urban interface (WUI) is a widely-recognized land use problem plagued by a fractured geography of land parcels, management jurisdictions, and governance mandates and objectives. People who work in this field have suggested a variety of approaches to managing this interface, from informal governance to contracting to insurance. To date, however, none of these scholars has fully embraced the dynamism, uncertainty, and complexity of the WUI—that is, its status as a complex adaptive system. In focusing almost exclusively on the management of this interface to control wildfire, this scholarship largely ignores the fact that rampant wildfire is itself the …

The fact that Donald Trump became President in 2016, despite losing the popular vote by a substantial margin, has brought renewed attention to the Electoral College system. In "Forging the American Nation," Shlomo Slonim provides an illuminating account of the process that led to this bizarre method of determining the outcome of presidential elections. But Professor Slonim's book also provides insights into the origins of many other structural features of our constitutional system that are of questionable value in a modern democracy, such as elections by state for the Senate, the Senate's exclusive exercise of legislative authority for treaties and …

Ukiyo-e Prints Course | Exhibition Catalogs
"Marching through the Floating World is a book that accompanies a student curated virtual exhibition of the same title. This exhibition is dedicated to images of processions in ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
Ukiyo-e or “pictures of the floating world” was a vibrant style of urban art that flourished in Japan in the 17th- 19th century, predominantly in the form of mass-produced woodcuts. Steeped in everyday pleasurable pastimes of townspeople, ukiyo-e prints reflected contemporary culture to its fullest, whether fact or fiction, often the two amalgamated in a witty way.
Processions constituted a noticeable theme in ukiyo-e prints as they were an …

Masks are an effective tool in combatting the spread of COVID-19, but some people still resist wearing them and mask-wearing behavior has not been experimentally studied in the United States. To understand the demographics of mask wearers and resistors, and the impact of mandates on mask-wearing behavior, we observed shoppers (n = 9935) entering retail stores during periods of June, July, and August 2020. Approximately 41% of the June sample wore a mask. At that time, the odds of an individual wearing a mask increased significantly with age and was also 1.5x greater for females than males. Additionally, the …

Minecrafting Bar Mitzvah: Two Rabbis Negotiating And Cultivating Learner-Driven Inclusion Through New Media., Owen Gottlieb
Articles
In 2013, a boy with special needs used the video game Minecraft to deliver the sermon at his bar mitzvah at a Reform synagogue, an apparently unique ritual phenomenon to this day. Using a narrative inquiry approach, this article examines two rabbis’ negotiations with new media, leading up to, during, and upon reflection after the event. The article explores acceptance, innovation, and validation of new media in religious practice, drawing on Campbell’s (2010) framework for negotiation of new media in religious communities. Clergy biography, philosophy, and institutional context all impact the negotiations with new media. By providing context of a …
