Covid-19 And The Environment: Reflections On The Pandemic In Asia, Hao Huang Sep 2020

Covid-19 And The Environment: Reflections On The Pandemic In Asia, Hao Huang

EnviroLab Asia

The idea of planetary health as a form of scholarly analysis and scientific investigation has particular relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic and to Asia, where the outbreak of the novel coronavirus was first reported. Over the past three decades, the continent’s rapid urbanization and industrialization have played a significant role in the region’s economic growth, increase in per capita income and the concentration of wealth, and the creation of some of the world’s fast-growing cities. These profound benefits have come with some serious consequences, however, and planetary-health experts have stressed that one of them has been the sharp uptick in …

Here For A Reason: 1969 To 2019 - Fifty Years Of Ethnic Studies At Cal Poly, Grace Yeh, Catherine Trujillo

Creative Works

This project commemorates 50 years of Ethnic Studies student activism and the program’s development. In 1968, students protested across the nation and at Cal Poly against institutionalized racism and educational inequities, leading to the establishment of the first Ethnic Studies programs. Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies Department was created in Fall 1969 as a culmination of these students’ efforts to recruit and retain students and faculty of color and to transform the curriculum to serve the community. The department disappeared in the 1980s but, again, through student organizing and movement building, was reborn 25 years ago in 1994. This catalog represents …

The Quest For Greener Pastures: Evaluating The Livelihoods Impacts Of Providing Vegetation Condition Maps To Pastoralists In Eastern Africa, Elia Machado, Helene Purcell, Andrew M. Simons, Stephanie Swinehart

Publications and Research

The survival of millions of pastoral households in Eastern Africa has become increasingly at risk. Due to mounting socioeconomic and climatic stressors, pastoral households are faced with making migration decisions under increasing uncertainty about resource availability and limited coping strategies. We assess the potential of providing vegetation condition maps to support the migration decision of pastoralists in Ethiopia and Tanzania and the effect of map usage on their herd condition and size. The maps were generated from remotely sensed data using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a proxy for vegetation condition and overlain with pastoralists’ preferred grazing areas. …

Dissemination And Visualization Of Hydro-Climate Data In Sub-Saharan Africa For Analysis Of Climatic Parameters, Divyadharshini Karthikeyan, Aparna S. Varde, Clement Alo Sep 2020

Dissemination And Visualization Of Hydro-Climate Data In Sub-Saharan Africa For Analysis Of Climatic Parameters, Divyadharshini Karthikeyan, Aparna S. Varde, Clement Alo

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Precipitation can have adverse effects on the climate ecosystem. Too much can impose concerns such as flooding and landslides, resulting in damaged property, agricultural losses, and loss of life. Too little, and drought becomes an issue, inducing wildfires, poor air quality, agricultural losses, and health degradation. While much work has been performed on historical and projected analysis of heavy precipitation, few interactive visualizations exist for end-users to better understand local impacts. The goal of this project is to create a visualization tool that easily demonstrates how precipitation extremes have changed and might change in the future for Sub-Saharan Africa. This …

Executive Summary

Since Agate Springs Ranch was founded by James H. Cook in 1887, exquisite examples of transitional Miocene mammalian fauna have been found along this stretch of the Niobrara River valley. Collectively these paleontological discoveries, along with the existing archeological and historical Native American collection, were the basis for establishing Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO) as a unit of the National Park System (NPS). The fossil remains from the Harrison and Anderson Ranch formations span a short, but important, time period within the Miocene Epoch. AGFO has provided science with an intimate look into North American mammalian evolution …

Both degradation kinetics well fit Michaelis-Menten model. The Michaelis constant (Km) and maximum rate of reaction (Vmax) were 0.82% melanoidin and 0.0045% melanoidin h-1 for the degradation by the purified laccase and 0.71% melanoidin and 0.0037% melanoidin h-1 for the degradation by the crude laccase. Turnover number (Kcat) of purified and crude laccases were 0.00023 …

Mpirically Derived Equation From Simple Heat Index For Calculating Wet Bulb Globe Temperature: A Case Study Of Thailand, Wutthichai Paengkaew, Atsamon Limsakul, Rittirong Junggoth, Somsak Pitaksanurat Sep 2020

Mpirically Derived Equation From Simple Heat Index For Calculating Wet Bulb Globe Temperature: A Case Study Of Thailand, Wutthichai Paengkaew, Atsamon Limsakul, Rittirong Junggoth, Somsak Pitaksanurat

Applied Environmental Research

The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index is a standard for assessing environmental heat stress, but the requirement of expensive instrument with specialized maintenance is limited its use. This study aims to develop the empirical equation to estimate the WBGT from Heat Index (HI) calculated from portable temperature and humidity recorder (THR), based on the data collected at seven sites covering all regions of Thailand. Comparative analysis shows that the HI values calculated from THR (HITHR) are consistent well with those measured from the thermal environmental monitor (HIQT36) as evidenced by a highly positive correlation between them (r=0.97; p<0.01; n=4,303). These results suggest high reliability of the portable THR and its acceptance to be used instead of the standard QT36 device. Based on a simple linear regression developed to estimate WBGT from the HITHR, it was found that the model accounts for at least 90% of the variance of the observed WBGT (dependent variable). In addition, validation of the model with the statistical methods shows relatively small errors of the estimated WBGT values in comparisonto the observed values. With this evidence, the developed empirical regression equation can be used to estimate WBGT with high accuracy and confidence. Simple and easier to use for the practitioners who are involved in public health works at community level, a heat monitoring tool kit consisting of a THR, WBGT chart and recommended actions were further developed based on the results obtained. This tool kit is a low-cost and simple device which can be used by various community-level stakeholders to prevent and reduce heat injuries and deaths of risk groups, especially the elderly. This tool is necessary in light of anthropogenic-induced warming and Thailand's aging society.

A Biogeochemical-Economic Model For The Valuation Of Cover Crops Ecosystem Services Under Climate Change, Karen M. Moran-Rivera Sep 2020

A Biogeochemical-Economic Model For The Valuation Of Cover Crops Ecosystem Services Under Climate Change, Karen M. Moran-Rivera

Master's Theses and Capstones

Cover crop (CC) adoption is a promising conservation practice that provides multiple ecosystem services, such as reduced nitrate pollution and increased soil health. These CC ecosystem services have been demonstrated in the biogeochemistry literature. However, widespread adoption of CC in the Midwestern U.S. is still low, in part because there continues to be a debate about whether adopting CC is privately optimal for farmers and how climate change might affect the private incentives to adopt. Economic analyses of CC adoption are complicated by the difficulty to account for the economic benefits of CC ecosystem services, in a changing climate.
